I recently had the wonderful experience of discovering that I can't have my name spelled right on my own driver's license. This is a huge and frustrating problem. I can't even live up to the legislation that requires my name to be spelled the same way on my legal documents. Head inside this blog post to learn why the Feds don't like spaces.

Instructions: Keep your eyes fixed on the small white mark in the center. At first, the ring is stationary and it's easy to tell that the dots are changing. A few seconds later, the ring begins to rotate and the dots suddenly appear to stop changing. (Or, more precisely, they appear to change much less than when the dots are motionless.)

But play the movie again, this time looking directly at one of the dots and following it as the ring rotates. You will see that, in fact, the dots had been changing at the same rate the whole time, even during the rotation—you just didn't notice it. This failure to detect that moving objects are changing is silencing.

This effect of visual silencing was described in:

Well. I love BBCA and the many shows that they air. However, when they mess with one of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who, I have to get a bit upset. I've been watching the first episode with the 11th Doctor, and they've edited out many of the awesome and funny bits. The worst was when they left out "Silence will Fall." Ugh. </rant>
