The Enigma that is Suarez

There is no doubt that Suarez is a very controversial person but up until yesterday, myself and most fans have made excuses for him

When he handled the ball on the goal-line against Ghana at the 2010 World Cup, my reaction was that anybody with a competitive spirit would have done the same. In fact if i was a coach i might have encouraged my players to do the same in the same set of circumstances

When he bit Ottman Bakkal, the defense was that he was provoked during a melee and even though that went a bit too far, people do crazy things when provoked

When he was said to racially abuse Evra, i defended him by saying that he was misconstrued. He used the word "negrito" which Evra mistook for Negro

When he refused to shake Evra's hand, i defended him by saying that he probably was still hurting after a hate campaign against him on an issue he probably felt he was innocent

When he handled the ball prior to scoring against Manfield, i defended by saying that he did not intend to deceive the referee as evidenced by his muted celebrations.

When he is accused of being a serial diver, i defend him by saying that he is not the only one that dives. Christian Bale, Ashley Young all dive but they are usually given a free pass by the media

Yesterday though, i don't know what excuse to give. He had no reason to do what he did. Ivanovic did not slap him or punch him, there was no verbal altercation. There was a tussle for the ball between the two players and if anything Suarez was the more aggressive culprit. Why he suddenly decided to exhibit this kind of cannibalistic and vampiristic behavior is unknown to me.

Liverpool is in a lose-lose situation here. If he stays, he is likely going to miss at least the first 3 games next season(He was given 7 in Holland for a similar offence. I can't see him getting less in a stricter EPL environment). That would mean another likely poor start to a season that could derail our top 4 aspirations
The more pressing problem is that there is not telling what he would do again. He could cost us another 7 games next season and it could come at a time when we need him most(remember he missed 8 games last season due to suspension).
Let's not also forget that the Liverpool name and brand is being dragged through the mud as all these shenanigans continue to happen.

The flip side is that Suarez is an extremely talented player who can single handedly win games for you. He is one of the top 5 best strikers(if not players)in the world. He has an uncanny penetrative ability that is only matched or surpassed by a few players right now and he will be very difficult to replace given all the fact that we don't have Champions league football to offer.

I don't envy Brendan Rodgers right now. He has a difficult decision to make especially with the temptation to think that with £40million for Suarez coupled with other likely sales and £20millon from FSG he might be able to revamp the squad and overall, the squad might be better off.

I don't necessarily share that view, but it is one that is worth considering___

If this is true it would be great news. Changing 3 defenders and possibly a goalkeeper in the off season is not a good recipe for success in the following season as too many players would be making lots of adjustments and that could lead to a slow start to next season, something we can ill afford again

Great question Should he come back?, place your comments below

Mine is as follows

Most people want this deal to happen, and it is not hard to see why. He will immediately add experience, class and a cool head. The major obstacle however is not his transfer price or wages, the major problem is tactical.

Brendan Rodgers typically plays a 3 man midfield. A defensive midfielder that breaks up play and servers as a destroyer, a central midfielder that acts as the metronome of the side. He controls the tempo of the game, orchestrates play and generally tends to direct the game. The 3 midfielder is the attacking one. He links the midfield with the attack, and makes penetrating runs into the box. Alonso is a perfect fit for the central midfield role despite his age. Herein however lies the problem. He links the midfield with the attack, and makes penetrating runs into the box. Alonso is a perfect fit for the central midfield role despite his age. Herein however lies the problem. Steven Gerrard already occupies that role after adjusting his play to suit that role given his age and his body. If Alonso where to come in either of 3 things will happen and neither is particularly desirable.

The first is that Steven Gerrard moves to the attacking midfield role that he thrived in under Rafa. However, his decline in age and the emphasis on patience by Rodgers for that role means that Gerrard is no more suited to that role. Moreover, playing in that role may drastically cut short his playing career as it is more demanding to the body

The second option will be to play Alonso as a destroyer, and that is a worse option for me. He can offer much more than breaking up play. An attribute that most of his coaches realize. Benitez played Mascherano alongside him, Mourinho plays Khedira alongside him, Del Bosque plays Busquets alongside him.

The third option is that he alternates with Gerrard but given his pedigree, class and wages of both players i doubt any of them would love to sit on the bench.

The final word is this. Alonso is a sexy option but given th wages he will be asking for, the fact that there are more pressing needs at other parts of the team. Liverpool will be better served using their limited monetary resources to strengthen other parts of the team___

I have been one of the staunchest supporters of Brendan Rodgers and rightly so because we are beginning to show signs of having an identity and the team seems to be coming together, but on Saturday against Southampton, he made a huge tactical error. He essentially played a 4-2-4 formation away from home against a side that defeated Man city and is fighting for their lives.

What infuriates me most is that he should have seen this coming.Just last week against Tottenham, we lost the midfield battle. It was until Joe Allen was brought in for Coutinho before calm was restored to the midfield and we won. I know it is attractive to play Suarez-Sturridge-Downing-Coutinho together and i also know that he wants to play Suarez in a free role behind Sturridge. It is easy to blame Joe Allen(and he did make some wayward passes), but he was swamped and to show that Joe Allen was not totally culpable, when Lucas came in it did not solve much he was also harried into make sloppy passes and he was also swamped.

Going forward, Brendan has to make 2 sacrifices(with our current team) when we are playing away from home or against tough opposition. Downing should be sacrificed for Henderson who takes up a central midfield role(thus the attacking trio becomes Sturridge-Suarez-Coutinho). Secondly one of Suarez or Sturridge will have to be shunted to the wings when we want to keep our shape and then move inwards when attacking to give our fullbacks especially Johnson to bomb up and down the wings.

If we continue to play what is essentially a 4-2-4, we would hammer hapless teams like Wigan but we would struggle against tactically sound teams.___

The problem with the Sahin transfer was that of positioning, In a 3 man midfield, Sahin was not tough enough to play in a defensive midfield role, he was never going to displace Gerrard in the 2nd midfield role, hence the decision of Rodgers to try him out as an attacking midfielder. Unfortunately, Sahin did not want to be a part of that experiment which led to his departure.

I was looking at the remaining fixtures that the teams chasing European spots have and i noticed that Tottenham still have to play Man City,Chelsea,Everton and Stoke away, immediately i felt pangs of hope, but i quickly shot them down, this article is right we are not ready for the Champions league.

For us to get into the Champions league we would need to win at least 8 of our remaining 9 games and that's a very big ask. The good news is that we are definitely moving in the right direction. The team and style of play is shaping up very nicely, and we are very close to having a first 11 that can match Tottenham and Arsenal in the pursuit of Champions League places next season(assuming neither of them buys Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo).

The board will need to back Rodgers in the next transfer market to cement the potential of this team. We need at least 4 quality players(2 central defenders, 1 attacking midfielder,1 right wing player) and 2 squad players(a defender that can play both center and left back, and also a defensive midfielder) to really compete and of course we must convince Suarez to give us at least one more season.

If we can do that i see no reason why this team can not be challenging for the league in 3 years.___

Originally, i had decided not to say anything about Liverpool's season until after it is officially over, but this article will push me to.
I will categorise current Liverpool players into 3 broad categories.

1. Players who are genuinely world class or have shown that they have the potential to be: In this category i will place the following players; Gerrard, Surez, Sturridge, Coutinho,Lucas,Johnson, Sterling(Debatable but lets wait and see),Kelly(May need to be shifted to central defence to achieve his true potential),

2. Players who are either squad players, or will be squad players at best: Jones,Henderson,Shelvey,Carragher,Coates,Wisdom,Enrique,Borini,Assaidi,Suso

3. Players who are either meant to be World Class and are not or are generally overrated: Reina,Agger,Skrtel,Allen

For Liverpool to challenge for fourth place we need more players in category 1 and less in 2 and 3. Every team must have squad players no doubt about that, but we have enough of them. For us to move forward, we need to ensure that we keep hold of everybody in 1, get rid of anybody in 2 or 3 who we can get money good for, reinvest in players who are either currently in 1 or have proven potential to be in 1. It's not easy given the fact that Champions league football is looking distant, but i am hoping that Rodgers is up to the task.___

What Coutinho needs to do to  realise his potential

Coutinho's transfer has finally been completed and there is a lot of excitement about this signing given his obvious talent. There is a word of caution though, Brazilians especially the attacking ones don't tend to succeed in the premiership due to cultural changes, language barriers, the physical style of play, media pressure and lack of effort. So how can Liverpool and Coutinho himself buck the trend. There are 3 key areas that must be attended to before Coutinho can realise his potential

1. Physicality: The EPL is a physical league and even though the likes of Silva and Mata have thrived in spite of it, Coutinho would need to add some bulk up especially if he is going to be playing in the center of midfield eventually. He had already started that process in Inter and i am sure he will harden up. He also has history with niggly injuries which the Liverpool physios would have to watch

2. Mentality: Coutinho would need to develop a killer instinct, the will to win at all costs. He has been found guilty of inconsistency and drifting out of games. In a club like Liverpool where a lot would be expected of him in time, he may not be able to have that luxury. He needs to know that hardwork is a precursor to success. Brazilian tend to be lazy in training, and Coutinho must not fall into that trap.

3. Understanding: Coutinho needs to understand not only the English culture and language but also understand Liverpool's evolving style of play and how he will be beneficial to the system.

Brendan Rodgers has a lot of work to do on him, but one of the major reasons i clamoured for this transfer is the high ceiling that this chap has. If he applies himself, i see no reason why he can not be a world class player in a few yearsCollapse this post___

It seems like Liverpool scouts now work for Southampton. Once a player is linked strongly with Liverpool, Southampton bids more and steals a march on us. This will make it the 3rd time(after Gaston Ramirez and Forren) because i don't see Liverpool paying more than £8 million pounds for him. Our only hope is if Coutinho says no to Southampton and insists on Liverpool which is unlikely given the statements he made a few days ago. I really want us to get him, so lets hope a miracle happens before the end of the transfer season and as for Southampton, i hope they get relegated.

The classic debate between a Welfare state or the Capitalist state

Yesterday, Phil Mickelson suggested that due to high and growing taxation, he might consider leaving California, maybe even consider moving to Canada (who does that?)  So, like Gerard Depardieu, who is now a Russian citizen due to 75% taxation in France, Mickelson is being ridiculed, primarily in Fortune magazine guest writers.

My take, is that if celebrities are coming out publicly regarding over-taxation, this signals a pretty interesting shift that might grow into wave of America's tax base leaving, either for Texas, or *gasp* Canada.

Is America going to respond by articles like this, calling Phil a "whiner", and "lucky" to have what he has earned, or will the nation figure out that for every Phil Mickelson thinking of leaving the country, there might be hundreds or thousands already making similar plans?

Whatever happens, I'm getting popcorn. ___The classic debate between a Welfare state or the Capitalist state

I am very excited about this transfer. I have followed Coutinho for a few years now and i can say that he is a very talented footballer, definitely more talented than Thomas Ince. Skillful, fast and with a very good technique he can be a very good signing for LFC. The drawbacks however are that he is lightweight and a little inconsistent. If he can overcome these 2 weaknesses and settle down quickly, he would definitely be a massive hit.

I hate it when people lie to save their skins. I hope a petition is filed for her removal. If not, then i am waiting for her to say she wants to run for office.

I haven't bothered to mention the whole sad Aaron Swartz saga, because it's been covered elsewhere.

But having the involved US attorney then basically lie about it all in a very public statement is something that I find particularly offensive. Compare these two statements - one from July 2011, one from yesterday, and tell me Carmen Ortiz isn't lying..

Yesterday (as reported by the Wall Street Journal and elsewhere):

"At no time did this office ever seek – or ever tell Mr. Swartz’s attorneys that it intended to seek – maximum penalties under the law."

And July 2011 (as posted by justice.gov itself):

"SWARTZ faces up to 35 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, restitution, forfeiture and a fine of up to $1 million"

Maybe that official and very public PR thing wasn't "telling Mr. Swartz’s attorneys", right?  Because in private, Ms Ortiz was probably talking about how she wanted to pay Aaron for his services, and just hug him. Right?  Anybody?

Ms Ortiz, just admit you were an ass-hat, and apologize. Instead of this kind of crap. Weasel-wording and misleading about your actions is not making your office look any better.

Here are the sources, so that people can compare them for themselves.

This interview with Maverick's center Chris Kaman spells out why it's going to be difficult to get gun control regulations. The NRA and gun advocates are framing this discussion.Gun owners and advocates are being told that their guns are being taken away and that simply not true.

What's Wrong With Facebook Search
The real problem with Facebook Graph Search has to do with the implicit assumptions Facebook is making about what must happen in order for the search to work and results to be relevant.
Assumptions:
1. The place, product, brand, doctor, service, or whatever it is you hope to find, exists as a Facebook business or brand page.
2. That page must be promoted or somehow discovered by people in your network.
3. Your friends have to have truthfully "liked" that business/brand page on Facebook.
4. You trust your friends' opinions and recommendations.

Number 4 sums up the problem i have with Facebook Graph Search. I don't trust my friend's recommendations. I prefer to go to Google, do my research and make an informed decision.

Ana Marie Cox sums up pretty much most of what i feel about the gun control debate. I support most of the proposals brought forward by Obama(especially on  universal background checks), but i fear it won't do much to stop homicides if it passes through Congress(which is unlikely). I feel much more effort should be geared towards ensuring that those that are mentally ill get the proper care in time to ensure that they do not kill themselves or go on a killing spree

I am always surprised when people denounce the use of torture and yet they are expecting results. You don't just expect to ask an ideological terrorist to tell you where Osama is or to give you information and he will start blabbing. He has to be pushed to the limits he can divulge anything.
I don't like torture, but i am pragmatic enough to realise that in most cases it is unavoidable

Very sad story, a classical case of legal overreach. Not excusing bad behaviour, but common sense should prevail

Very commendable, reminds me of a case in Nigeria where a bank mistakenly transferred about $56 million dollars to a young students account. The boy alerted the bank without touching any penny

Airport cleaner turns in lost iPad with $13,000 in case, gives away reward

A cleaning service worker at a Florida airport found an iPad – with $13,000 stuffed in its case – and turned it in. He then gave away the small reward he got from the owner to two people in need.

Apple needed to make this move. They are feeling pressure to be more innovative especially given that they are only one company going up against a legion of Android licensees.
The question is will they be willing to take a leap of faith on some of these projects like Google did?

In 2005, Mujica married Lucía Topolansky, a fellow Tupamaro member and current senator, after many years of co-habitation. They have no children and live on an austere farm in the outskirts of Montevideo where they cultivate flowers as an economic activity. His humble lifestyle is reflected by his choice of an aging Volkswagen Beetle as transport, his only asset. His wife owns the farm they live on. The Economist describes him as "a roly-poly former guerrilla who grows flowers on a small farm and swears by vegetarianism". He also donates 87% of his state salary to charitable causes.[26] In 2012 he donated 90% of his state salary to charitable causes. He does not believe in God.

Materialism has now become a norm. We want to acquire and forget about others. And to imagine this guy does not even believe in God

Hats off to the Uruguayan President..

I know that there is always the tendency to look back, reminisce and say that quality has dropped. In the case of music however, i believe it is true. People sing now to make money and not to pass across a message. The sad part is that it permeates almost every genre.
