Ray Ortega2,229The term podcast has a specific meaning and if you have a show (audio or video) that you post to an RSS feed, congrats you have a podcast. But what do you call it? If not a podcast then what? A show, internet broadcast, netcast, or something else. And more importantly, why?Does the term "podcast" affect the medium's growth either good or bad? Does it even matter what we call it? Join us in the chat, live at 10pm EDT/GMT-4 and share your thoughts.Guests for this Round will include +David Jackson +Daniel J. Lewis +Richard Cleveland +Steve Lee myself (Ray Ortega), +Dustin Hartzler, +Rob Greenlee  and more TBD.Podcasters' Roundtable - Round 12 - What do you call your Podcast?2013-05-03 04:00:0039
Ray Ortega2,229What defines success in podcasting? Is it subscribers, downloads, website traffic, money or something else? Join +Pat Flynn  from the Smart Passive Income blog and podcast along with +Daniel J. Lewis  +David Jackson  and myself (Ray Ortega) to discuss the concept of success as it applies to podcasting.Pat was a very successful blogger (numbers, money, recognition, etc.) before he ever started a podcast. We'll find out how starting a podcast has increased his own measures of success and learn how each podcaster on the Roundtable defines success in podcasting differently.Google should adjust your invitation to fit your timezone. If not, this will begin at 11:55pm Eastern Standard Time, U.S. Podcasters' Roundtable - Round 10 - Podcasting "Success" with Pat Flynn2013-03-09 05:55:0042

Jack McDonald Burnett741This is a personal circle of mine, of aspiring authors, brand-newly published authors, and new-ishly published authors who still remember us little people.  This isn't a plus one, comment, reshare and tell everybody how handsome I am and I'll add you  to the circle "circle share," just a great collection of people dealing with similar challenges and similar opportunities.  I'd love to add you to it, if you're a soon-to-be or new author, and I'd love for you to add everybody in it, too if you're inclined.  Really great, fun, interesting writers.Note that if you're reading this on the Android app you won't be able to "see" the circle or add people from it.  Only works on the full G+ website.2014-03-30 03:42:25107012

Gary McLaren1,175New Engagers Circle on Google+Over the past few weeks as I have become more active here on G+ I have been extremely grateful for all the comments, +1s and shares from the people I've met here. After all, the "magic" of G+ is in the engagement - conversing and interacting with people on topics of mutual interest.Today I want to share with you a circle of wonderful people that have been engaging with me. Many of these people, like me, are writers and authors. They're a great bunch and I guess many of them are the type of people you might be looking to connect with too. So check them out. Go say "Hi". Add them to your circles if you like. Or share the circle with others. I'm not in this circle... this is all about them not me. So please consider sharing it with others to create even more connections. Hat tip to +martin shervington for the inspiration to do this. Cheers, Gary.  P.S. I'm sorry if I somehow missed you off this circle... if I did it was accidental! But if this idea goes over well, I'll be doing it again. 2013-02-19 23:38:59153666

NuroSlam „Ralph Sevy“ FreeMan2,737Been cleaning up my circles and have decided to share my own circle. I call it the circle of peeps. These here folks are good honest people, who take little no BS. All have a love and desire for true freedom and are working to that end. IF you decide to add them, know this, more then likely, more then a few are going to piss you the hell off one way or the other at sometime. If they do, GOOD, it means you are not thinking straight. As to my peeps that are NOT in this circle, you know who you are, let me know, it makes my circle management easier. If you get notified of this post, you know the drill.EDIT: I will repost the updated one much later as i do some more circle managment2012-10-12 17:06:2349916

Shaun Whelden5,005My Top 10% of FollowersI just reached 5000 followers today!  Every time I hit a thousand marker, I celebrate by sharing a circle of my top 1% of followers.  Since 5000 is such a significant marker, I've decided to share not just one.... but three circles!  I will be sharing my top 10% of followers, my top 1% of followers and my top 0.1% of followers. To minimize butthurtedness, and maximize time efficiency, I am letting Google+ choose these circles for me.  My procedure is this:On a computer (because you can't manage circles on a mobile device), I go to Circles.  Then I click the "Have you in circles" button towards the top.  I sort the results by relevance.  Then I go through and remove a handful of people that are personal friends of mine who joined G+ a long time ago and never bothered to log in again.Something weird that I noticed:  the people towards the top of the list after I sorted it by relevance did not change from one sort to the next.  But people lower down on the list changed dramatically from one second to the next.  Very strange.  Also, for some weird reason, a brand page +Famous Footwear that I just added yesterday, and which just added me back today, is in my top 500.  One of my best friends, +Leonard Harris, did not make the top 500 list even though we regularly interact on each others' posts.  So the algorithm that Google uses to determine relevance is somewhat perplexing.  I mean, a lot of the people on this list clearly belong here..... but some are a total mystery.  And some people who should have made the list did not.Lastly, please note that my Top 500 Followers is a different list from my To 500 People I'm Following.  Think about it.  The lists are similar, but not identical.  This list is my Top 500 Followers as of today (8/14/2012) #sharedcircles   #circleshare   #circles  #circle2012-08-15 00:01:3650113210

Amy McLeod1,986Ok, I have recently expanded my articulate and engaged circle with circles other people have given out of people that are interested in or actively participating in the Occupy movement. I'm not guaranteeing everyone I'm sharing here, as 900 odd people is a bit much to go through. These are people who would normaly be all over the political spectrum, but all interested in the the problems with out of control finance and it's corruption of goverment, they will certainly hold many views totally contrary to yours on many issues, but on this issue they are the 99%. I can't even guarantee that everyone in this circle is what I've stated above, I just took on trust the circles that have been shared to me and added them to people I had circled as articulate and engaged before Occupy took off, some of them may even be incomprehensible and disinterested, feel free to sort through them yourself if you have time, but I'd urge you not to exclude anyone just because their views are the polar opposite of yours on other issues. 99% is more important than any other divide and on this one thing both left and right should be united.First 500 are here.Amy McLeod shared a circle with you.2011-10-19 15:12:51500301

Bug

+Chris Lacy, I just installed version 3.0.2. The invisible covers bug is still there. Whenever I turn a folder into a cover, the folder/icon just disappears. I can still tap/swipe on it and move it around if I remember where it is, but it's invisible. This is on my Nexus 5 (Android 5.0) and Nexus 7 2013 (5.0.1).

FEATURE REQUEST

The double/triple tap to lock device feature of both versions of Action Launcher does not play well with Smart Lock on Lollipop. Unlike pressing the power button, it locks the device even when a trusted place/face/device would keep the device unlocked. It would be great if the double/triple tap would behave like the power button when Smart Lock is active and just turn the screen off.

Self-publishing, largely due to Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform, is doing the same thing for authors.

We’re entering a new era in history: the space between “starving artist” and “rich and famous” is beginning to collapse. YouTube has signed up over a million partners (people who agree to run ads over their videos to make money from their content). The “creative class” is no longer emerging: it’s here, now.___Self-publishing, largely due to Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform, is doing the same thing for authors.

Widget Feature Requests

1. I'd like to be able to more easily check off items in the widget, such as swiping or tapping a check box to complete items in a shopping list as I pick them up at the store. Right now it takes two taps in different places on the widget to complete a task/item. One tap or swipe would be better.

2. More important to me: I very much want to be able to customize the appearance of the widget. At the very least, the addition of semi-transparent light and dark themes would be helpful. Even better would be to let users completely customize the widget background with a full color picker and transparency slider as well as choose the text color (e.g., black and white). I use Muzei Live Wallpaper to display beautiful backgrounds that I don't want completely obscured by an opaque widget.

But this is one of the reasons why Marvel is doing such great business these days. They're not fighting the fans, not trying to control the crowd. The company is accepting the reality of the Internet—that a leak can't really be contained—and giving fans what they want."

Here's a recording of the 2014 Prometheus Award ceremony held by the Libertarian Futurist Society.

The winners of the Best Libertarian Novel Award — Cory Doctorow (Homeland) and Ramez Naam (Nexus) — each give a brief speech.

Lois McMaster Bujold, winner of the Hall of Fame Award for her novel Falling Free, and Leslie Fish, winner of the Special Award for her filk songs, sent remarks to be read to the audience.

Video of the Prometheus Award Ceremony from LonCon the World Science Fiction Convention (8/14-18) is now available. Cory Doctorow and Ramez Naam (co-winners of the award for Best Novel) gave gracious acceptance speeches. Lois McMaster Bujold (Classic Award) and Leslie Fish (Special Award) sent remarks that were also read.

The video quality is not awesome, but the speeches are short and well worth hearing.___Here's a recording of the 2014 Prometheus Award ceremony held by the Libertarian Futurist Society.

This week, Johnny Truant and Sean Platt of Fiction Unboxed share with us lessons learned as they wrote a 100,000-word book in 30 days, live, in front of an audience, showing everything, and starting from nothing.

"You should be able to tell by looking at the Table of Contents whether you have the second edition. There’s way, way, way more stuff in the update. In short, if the first chapter proper is called “Challenges Facing The Publishing Industry” you have the 1st edition. If it’s called “Appetite for Disruption” you have the new 2nd edition."

I didn't have any trouble, but if the update isn't successful for you, check out this post on ways to fix the problem:

"Much is made among liberty-lovers of the divide between utilitarian and deontological approaches to liberty. Roderick Long, however, suggests a third way. He proposes a “eudaimonist” or “virtue ethics” approach, which in the tradition of Aristotle theorizes rights as interpersonal normative principles. How to Win Friends and Influence People (While Sharing Social Content)

More than 70 years ago, the American writer and lecturer Dale Carnegie published a transcendent book on people skills entitled “How to Win Friends and Influence People.”

To this day, Mr. Carnegie’s many nuggets of wisdom ring largely true, because more than anything else they speak to human nature.

In the modern age of the Internet and social content sharing, we can still look to age-old truths in deciphering a code to grow an audience (win friends) and successfully market online content via social media (influence people).

Here are ten of these truths:

Why do you think fantasy fiction has been so popular?

"Why do so many fantasies involve young sons of widows who grow up to kill the monster, defeat the king, marry the princess and rule the kingdom happily ever after? Some point out that these stories are very old; this is true, but it’s just begging the question. A story appeals to audiences because it speaks to them emotionally. Why does this story appeal to modern audiences or ancient ones? It appeals to them because it’s a symbolic representation of the struggle for autonomy that everybody engages in. The kingdom isn’t necessarily a kingdom; it’s just a life where you get to decide what happens."
