Jack McDonald Burnett741This is a personal circle of mine, of aspiring authors, brand-newly published authors, and new-ishly published authors who still remember us little people.  This isn't a plus one, comment, reshare and tell everybody how handsome I am and I'll add you  to the circle "circle share," just a great collection of people dealing with similar challenges and similar opportunities.  I'd love to add you to it, if you're a soon-to-be or new author, and I'd love for you to add everybody in it, too if you're inclined.  Really great, fun, interesting writers.Note that if you're reading this on the Android app you won't be able to "see" the circle or add people from it.  Only works on the full G+ website.2014-03-30 03:42:25107012CC G+

Gary McLaren1,175New Engagers Circle on Google+Over the past few weeks as I have become more active here on G+ I have been extremely grateful for all the comments, +1s and shares from the people I've met here. After all, the "magic" of G+ is in the engagement - conversing and interacting with people on topics of mutual interest.Today I want to share with you a circle of wonderful people that have been engaging with me. Many of these people, like me, are writers and authors. They're a great bunch and I guess many of them are the type of people you might be looking to connect with too. So check them out. Go say "Hi". Add them to your circles if you like. Or share the circle with others. I'm not in this circle... this is all about them not me. So please consider sharing it with others to create even more connections. Hat tip to +martin shervington for the inspiration to do this. Cheers, Gary.  P.S. I'm sorry if I somehow missed you off this circle... if I did it was accidental! But if this idea goes over well, I'll be doing it again. 2013-02-19 23:38:59153666CC G+

NuroSlam „Ralph Sevy“ FreeMan2,737Been cleaning up my circles and have decided to share my own circle. I call it the circle of peeps. These here folks are good honest people, who take little no BS. All have a love and desire for true freedom and are working to that end. IF you decide to add them, know this, more then likely, more then a few are going to piss you the hell off one way or the other at sometime. If they do, GOOD, it means you are not thinking straight. As to my peeps that are NOT in this circle, you know who you are, let me know, it makes my circle management easier. If you get notified of this post, you know the drill.EDIT: I will repost the updated one much later as i do some more circle managment2012-10-12 17:06:2349916CC G+

Shaun Whelden5,005My Top 10% of FollowersI just reached 5000 followers today!  Every time I hit a thousand marker, I celebrate by sharing a circle of my top 1% of followers.  Since 5000 is such a significant marker, I've decided to share not just one.... but three circles!  I will be sharing my top 10% of followers, my top 1% of followers and my top 0.1% of followers. To minimize butthurtedness, and maximize time efficiency, I am letting Google+ choose these circles for me.  My procedure is this:On a computer (because you can't manage circles on a mobile device), I go to Circles.  Then I click the "Have you in circles" button towards the top.  I sort the results by relevance.  Then I go through and remove a handful of people that are personal friends of mine who joined G+ a long time ago and never bothered to log in again.Something weird that I noticed:  the people towards the top of the list after I sorted it by relevance did not change from one sort to the next.  But people lower down on the list changed dramatically from one second to the next.  Very strange.  Also, for some weird reason, a brand page +Famous Footwear that I just added yesterday, and which just added me back today, is in my top 500.  One of my best friends, +Leonard Harris, did not make the top 500 list even though we regularly interact on each others' posts.  So the algorithm that Google uses to determine relevance is somewhat perplexing.  I mean, a lot of the people on this list clearly belong here..... but some are a total mystery.  And some people who should have made the list did not.Lastly, please note that my Top 500 Followers is a different list from my To 500 People I'm Following.  Think about it.  The lists are similar, but not identical.  This list is my Top 500 Followers as of today (8/14/2012) #sharedcircles   #circleshare   #circles  #circle2012-08-15 00:01:3650114010CC G+

Amy McLeod1,986Ok, I have recently expanded my articulate and engaged circle with circles other people have given out of people that are interested in or actively participating in the Occupy movement. I'm not guaranteeing everyone I'm sharing here, as 900 odd people is a bit much to go through. These are people who would normaly be all over the political spectrum, but all interested in the the problems with out of control finance and it's corruption of goverment, they will certainly hold many views totally contrary to yours on many issues, but on this issue they are the 99%. I can't even guarantee that everyone in this circle is what I've stated above, I just took on trust the circles that have been shared to me and added them to people I had circled as articulate and engaged before Occupy took off, some of them may even be incomprehensible and disinterested, feel free to sort through them yourself if you have time, but I'd urge you not to exclude anyone just because their views are the polar opposite of yours on other issues. 99% is more important than any other divide and on this one thing both left and right should be united.First 500 are here.Amy McLeod shared a circle with you.2011-10-19 15:12:51500301CC G+

The state is the judge in its own case. What did John Locke say about that now? Oh right. Men being the judges in their own case is one of the so-called inconveniences of the "state of nature" for which the state is supposed to be the remedy. So much for that.

Paolo Bacigalupi's Pump Six and Other Stories is on sale for $1.99 today on Kindle.

Whatever you think of his politics, I've found him to be an excellent writer and, at least in the short stories I've read, a good example of how to get across your political views without being heavy-handed. This book is worth checking out, especially if you're a writer.

Here's my review of Paolo's story, "The Calorie Man," which is in this collection:

Mary Poppins Quits with Kristen Bell

Mary Poppins quits because she's only being paid minimum wage. Yes, the reasoning is as bad as you think. At about 0:38 seconds in she starts complaining about all the money taken out of her paycheck in taxes — federal and state income tax, Medicare, Social Security — and remarks how it reduces her below the poverty line. But does she blame the state and federal government? NO!

This is what regulation does and is for — to stifle new competition and preserve the status quo. The state prefers to work with a few large established players and hates the perceived instability of the market.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I don't think it's necessary to concoct elaborate conspiracies in order to think the state is evil and unnecessary.

But this line is by Hunter S. Thompson is epic and awe-inducing:

"American journalism I think has been cowed and intimidated by the massive flag-sucking, this patriotic orgy that the White House keeps whipping up."

That's right. He said "massive flag-sucking." Such perfect imagery. Much wow.

Our very own Demian Farnworth made it on this list three times -- the highest being number 7. Our CFO CFO Sean Jackson made it, too, grabbing no. 16.

By the way, this makes for a great reading list. Have at it:

Wow, Ronda Rousey absolutely destroyed Alexis Davis, touted as her toughest challenger to date, in a 16-second #ufc175  title fight last night.

Here's pretty much the whole fight in a single gif.

Noooo! They discovered that period we inserted! It's all over now, all of our illusions and deceptions have been exposed to the light! The entire corpus of libertarian philosophy, historic, and economic analysis has been thrown down once and for all!

Not a joke! Not an imaginary story! Not from the Onion!

Well, what do you know, SFWA, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, endorsed the anti-Amazon Preston letter without consulting its membership.

And this only a week after asking its members to comment on whether and how self-published authors should be allowed to join the guild. I asked rhetorically then why self-published authors should join — what benefit is there? SFWA's answer seems to be none.

Interesting. This is a personality test that purports to measure not how you see yourself but how others see you.

I got The Maverick Leader.

A maverick leader is pioneering, irreverent, and entrepreneurial. According to the test, my primary advantages are innovation and power, i.e., I am creative and I lead with authority.

Seven years ago, Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone. Since then, the #Smartphone  age was born (technically). Whether iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone, this was a majorly pivotal date.

SFWA Policy on Self-Publishing: Comments Welcome

It looks like SFWA, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, have finally realized the error of their ways and are asking how self-published authors can be included in the guild.

"The SFWA Board of Directors is asking members to share their opinions of self-publishing over the summer. The Board has asked the members to consider not just whether or not to make it possible for writers to join on the basis of self-published works but also the issues that would have to be addressed, such as confirming income, sales, and other publishing information from self-published writers."

To +Joseph Salerno's  post, I would add that there's no reason why the "originator of ideas" need be a scholar, much less an academic scholar.

Moreover, the Internet has radically flattened and decentralized the dissemination of ideas to an incredible extent few, if any, could have conceived in Hayek's day.
