Liberty.me784From the Imperium-controlled aetherlanes to a tech noir restitution agency in the Free Zone and from a steampunk, 1894 China with clockwork automatons to a post-1984 Orwellian dystopia with mandatory goodpharm, Defiant, She Advanced presents ten science fiction stories of defiance and daring. Split evenly between strong female and male leads, these heroes fight losing battles on principle alone, discover lies hidden deep inside themselves, execute daring rescues and fight for love and liberty in a society where human dignity is cheaper than obsolete swarmbots. These original, never-before-published works are from veteran authors, including William F. Wu, as well as emerging talents. Join authors George Donnelly, Wendy McElroy, and JP Medved for a rousing discussion of the anthology, science fiction, and liberty in literature!Book Launch: Defiant, She Advanced2015-01-13 03:00:0010
Christopher Cantwell34,990At midnight, the United States Federal Government will run out of cash. It's agents have taken to the airwaves to tell us how horrible a place the world will become, without our national parks and other "non-essential" personnel, but we're pretty sure we can do without them. So let's celebrate the beginning of the end, for our enemy, the State! "As politicians and main stream media outlets scramble to convince Americans that the sky is indeed falling, others are making hors d'oeuvres, chilling champagne, and preparing playlists. Ray Ortega2,459The term podcast has a specific meaning and if you have a show (audio or video) that you post to an RSS feed, congrats you have a podcast. But what do you call it? If not a podcast then what? A show, internet broadcast, netcast, or something else. And more importantly, why? Does the term "podcast" affect the medium's growth either good or bad? Does it even matter what we call it? Join us in the chat, live at 10pm EDT/GMT-4 and share your thoughts. Guests for this Round will include +David Jackson +Daniel J. Is it subscribers, downloads, website traffic, money or something else?  Join +Pat Flynn  from the Smart Passive Income blog and podcast along with +Daniel J. EVERYONE is better off
Life expectancy of World Population - 1800, 1950, 2012
WOW!
By 1950, 50% of the planet had a greater life expectancy than anyone in 1800.
Today? The entire planet has a greater life expectancy than anyone in 1800, and over half have a greater life expectancy than anyone just 62 years ago.

What's so fascinating to me is to see the "equality" from 1800, then the sharp division between the haves and have nots in 1950, and how it's now flattening out again - with everyone doing better.

So...take a step back from your daily troubles, get a longer larger perspective and realize how GREAT we are really doing as a species!

You'd think this wouldn't need saying...

The problem with government regulation

The problem with government regulation is not that it's wrong to have a third party act as a neutral arbitrator, watchdog, or guarantor of safety, quality and effectiveness.  All of those things are absolutely necessary.  To have a business that regulates itself is a conflict of interest.

No, the problem is that the state has a monopoly on the regulation of commerce. And that doesn't work for several reasons. One is because that also is a conflict of interest, for the same reason that having a private business regulate itself is a conflict of interest.

Who will regulate the regulators themselves? There is no transitive closure to that question.

"If an agency is the ultimate judge in every case of conflict, then it is also judge in all conflicts involving itself. Consequently, instead of merely preventing and resolving conflict, a monopolist of ultimate decision making will also cause and provoke conflict in order to settle it to his own advantage. That is, if one can only appeal to the state for justice, justice will be perverted in the favor of the state, constitutions and supreme courts notwithstanding." ~ Hans-Hermann Hoppe

Another reason is because a monopoly watchdog is a single point of failure, and a single high-value target for corruption.

"If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?" ~ Bastiat

The problem with the state -- which is organized power that claims and violently enforces a monopoly on the use of coercive force and the provision of governmental services -- is the same problem that arises with any hierarchically-organized power structure. And it's the same problem that arises when any person or group has a monopoly. And it's the same problem that arises when any human attains power. We have met the enemy, and he is us--human beings:

"If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself." ~ James Madison

You cannot solve the problem of wrongful use of power by creating hierarchical power structures that concentrate power at the top of the hierarchy. Even if one initially installs people of perfect integrity in such positions of power, they will not remain in office forever. Eventually, those who would seek to corrupt the system to their advantage will succeed. And they are likely to be the rich and powerful:

"When under the pretext of fraternity, the legal code imposes mutual sacrifices on the citizens, human nature is not thereby abrogated. Everyone will then direct his efforts toward contributing little to, and taking much from, the common fund of sacrifices. Now, is it the most unfortunate who gains from this struggle? Certainly not, but rather the most influential and calculating." -- Frederic Bastiat

And finally, a monopoly regulator is effectively a central planner. And central planning does not work, because it cannot solve the Economic Calculation Problem: => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_calculation_problem___You'd think this wouldn't need saying...

The newest update to #Timely seems to make use of the Android alarm api needed for Timely alarms to show up in Chronus's next alarm feature. I still don't see Timely as an option for the tap action though.

Timely #1.3
- Select your own sounds
- Upcoming alarm notification
- Option to ask for the challenge to snooze
- Google Now support for timers and reuses alarms
- Android 5.0 adaptions:
- Colored notifications
- Colored status and action bar
- Colored Overview headers
- support for new alarm API to show the alarm icon
- Numerous fixes for crashes and visual glitches

Lyrics

Kill for gain or shoot to maim
But we don't need a reason
The Golden Goose is on the loose
And never out of season
Blackened pride still burns inside
This shell of bloody treason
Here's my gun for a barrel of fun
For the love of living death

The killer's breed or the Demon's seed,
The glamour, the fortune, the pain,
Go to war again, blood is freedom's stain
Don't you pray for my soul anymore?

2 minutes to midnight,
The hands that threaten doom.
2 minutes to midnight,
To kill the unborn in the womb.

The blind men shout "Let the creatures out
We'll show the unbelievers."
The napalm screams of human flames
Of a prime time Belsen feast ... yeah!
As the reasons for the carnage cut their meat and lick the gravy
We oil the jaws of the war machine and feed it with our babies.

The killer's breed or the Demon's seed,
The glamour, the fortune, the pain,
Go to war again, blood is freedom's stain
Don't you pray for my soul anymore.

2 minutes to midnight,
The hands that threaten doom.
2 minutes to midnight,
To kill the unborn in the womb.

The body bags and little rags of children torn in two
And the jellied brains of those who remain to put the finger right on you
As the madmen play on words and make us all dance to their song
To the tune of starving millions to make a better kind of gun.

The killer's breed or the Demon's seed,
The glamour, the fortune, the pain,
Go to war again, blood is freedom's stain
Don't you pray for my soul anymore.

2 minutes to midnight,
The hands that threaten doom.

Self-publishing, largely due to Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform, is doing the same thing for authors.

We’re entering a new era in history: the space between “starving artist” and “rich and famous” is beginning to collapse. YouTube has signed up over a million partners (people who agree to run ads over their videos to make money from their content). The “creative class” is no longer emerging: it’s here, now.___Self-publishing, largely due to Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform, is doing the same thing for authors.

"Within about two hours of the leaked version hitting the web, Marvel went ahead and posted the official version. So much for carefully stage-managed corporate PR, eh? But this is one of the reasons why Marvel is doing such great business these days. They're not fighting the fans, not trying to control the crowd. The company is accepting the reality of the Internet—that a leak can't really be contained—and giving fans what they want."

Here's a recording of the 2014 Prometheus Award ceremony held by the Libertarian Futurist Society.

The winners of the Best Libertarian Novel Award — Cory Doctorow (Homeland) and Ramez Naam (Nexus) — each give a brief speech.

Lois McMaster Bujold, winner of the Hall of Fame Award for her novel Falling Free, and Leslie Fish, winner of the Special Award for her filk songs, sent remarks to be read to the audience.

Video of the Prometheus Award Ceremony from LonCon the World Science Fiction Convention (8/14-18) is now available. Cory Doctorow and Ramez Naam (co-winners of the award for Best Novel) gave gracious acceptance speeches. Lois McMaster Bujold (Classic Award) and Leslie Fish (Special Award) sent remarks that were also read.

The video quality is not awesome, but the speeches are short and well worth hearing.___Here's a recording of the 2014 Prometheus Award ceremony held by the Libertarian Futurist Society.
