Kyle Beck66So, I know a lot of my friends who have joined +Google+ wonder "What's the point? I have a Facebook." Well that comparison was flawed from the beginning, although many people made it while trying to describe G+. There are similarities, but one of my favorite features in G+ has been the ability to share Circles with others. In fact I'm not sure I would see the point if I hadn't been shared this very circle by +Robert Scoble (IIRC) early on in my G+ membership. It has proven an invaluable source of up-to-the-minute Tech News over the past year and really showed me how G+ is very different from FB.See, when you visit FB the information you receive is solely from your family and real-life acquaintances. This can be great for keeping up with people you don't see regularly, etc., but it is very hard to reach out to new people who share your interests through FB. Not so on G+. You can create and share groups of friends and pages (Circles) to organize your social interests. In effect, this creates dynamic communities where you can choose who you interact with.Anyways, I hope you will consider adding this Circle, packed full of Tech Enthusiasts. If you don't really use G+ or wonder what the point is, that goes double for you!2012-06-30 00:28:364881003

I'm sharing this since I am seeing lots of new people coming over and I'm sure they are looking for some great people to circle here. Unfortunately I can't share everyone that I have in this circle (I have 575 in this circle on my screen, but Google+ only lets me share 500 with you). Lots of interesting tech bloggers and journalists here. Hope you enjoy. This is the circle that starts my morning every day.Speaking of Tech News, I'm off to +VMware. Amy McLeod1,986Ok, I have recently expanded my articulate and engaged circle with circles other people have given out of people that are interested in or actively participating in the Occupy movement. I'm not guaranteeing everyone I'm sharing here, as 900 odd people is a bit much to go through. These are people who would normaly be all over the political spectrum, but all interested in the the problems with out of control finance and it's corruption of goverment, they will certainly hold many views totally contrary to yours on many issues, but on this issue they are the 99%. I can't even guarantee that everyone in this circle is what I've stated above, I just took on trust the circles that have been shared to me and added them to people I had circled as articulate and engaged before Occupy took off, some of them may even be incomprehensible and disinterested, feel free to sort through them yourself if you have time, but I'd urge you not to exclude anyone just because their views are the polar opposite of yours on other issues. 99% is more important than any other divide and on this one thing both left and right should be united.First 500 are here.Amy McLeod shared a circle with you.2011-10-19 15:12:51500301

Robert Scoble152,040This is the best circle for Apple tech news tomorrowThis will be the best circle to watch for info on Apple tomorrow (it's of 250 of the best tech journalists/bloggers/thought leaders on Google+). I will be in front of my three big screens pulling in the best data from around the Web. I'll be watching Twitter, Facebook, Google+ all at the same time. Plus, I'll be live on +Shira Lazar's show starting at 10 a.m. tomorrow with live reports.Anyway, if you want to see how the tech press covers this, follow this circle (make sure you put these in a new circle of your own so you can delete them if they get too noisy for you).I'm watching thousands more, too, and will share anything good. You will be flooded tomorrow with Apple news. Do you personally get more discussion on Google+ or Twitter?
Over on https://twitter.com/Jay_zo I seem to get much more back and forth from a smaller number of followers (2400) vs. here (13000). Do you see the same?

Trying to figure out if anyone's found early success w/ content marketing

I do platform and community at a seed-stage VC, NextView Ventures, up in Boston. I recently spent a couple weeks hearing from our portfolio founders about how content marketing is intriguing but execution (especially quickly and effectively) is difficult or unclear.

Just wondering if anyone here has found success and how.

We created this blueprint as a result of my conversations (linked below) which includes specific steps, hacks, and interviews with various startups...but I'm curious to know beyond our portfolio what the sentiment is -- thanks!

Questions about startup content marketing

I'd be curious to know who has/hasn't found success with content and why. I do platform and community for a seed-stage VC, NextView Ventures, up in Boston, and I just spent the last couple weeks talking to our portfolio on the subject.

We then created a step by step blueprint to execute content marketing, which you can find linked below.

What I'd be curious in learning from this group is (A) whether this sort of thing helps and (B) whether you personally have found any success through a particular tactic or approach to CM.

Content Marketing Visual Blueprint + Hacks
(No form to fill out, by the way!)

My firm, NextView Ventures, and I recently published this guide meant to be used as a blueprint to keep at your side as you execute (not an ebook to read cover to cover). It's particularly great for startups but can be used for really any company looking to execute better/fast.

Also included are some startup interviews with those who have found success, as well as several hacks you can use to create content or market that content in sneaky ways that succeed.

Hope you enjoy!

What does "remarkable" content mean anyway? A dive into the term on behalf of marketers everywhere

“And maybe that’s worth it, in order to create for a living.”

This thought ended a post-work conversation on the constant need to explain and defend the creative process to others. Those in creative professions can likely relate to the quote, spoken by Tyler, a designer friend of mine.

Now, the fact that he’s a designer isn’t actually a requirement for our friendship. But given the subject of this post, it makes sense that you know he’s a designer. That’s the power of adjectives, you see: They’re subtle but powerful conveyers of meaning and clarity.

But as anyone with a boss knows all too well, some adjectives can just plain frustrate and annoy you. And few are more rampant in the business world today than the word which launched Tyler and my post-work discussion: “remarkable.” Particularly when it precedes the word “content.”

As in, “Jensen, we need a robust, synergistic strategy to create remarkable content and grow up-and-to-the-right quarter-over-quarter!”

(Facepalm.) Thank you, newspaper editor from Spider-Man.

But assume for a moment you had to listen.

Rather than many of our knee-jerk reactions to this request (which, I’m guessing, also involves a knee and a jerk), let’s assume we actually had to create remarkable content, whatever that means.

So, um … what does that mean?

For starters, remarkable can’t mean average.

We all get that. That statement alone isn’t very helpful. But what if you visualized what average looked like?

Why "write for your audience" has become dangerous advice

As a writer who found his way into content marketing, I always felt the phrase "write for your audience" was a bit overblown. Said another way, this common advice runs something like this:

"It's not about you; it's about them."

Huh? Really? I like content marketing exactly because I get to insert my perspective and create something that has emotional and intellectual meaning...for my audience, for sure, but also for me.

I mean, think about it -- have you ever written anything really, truly awesome that wasn’t at least a little bit for you? Where you didn't have at least one burst of momentum or energy or that weird period of creative spark you can only describe as briefly blacking out? (Some of you know what I mean.)

Why "Sorry for Marketing"?

Since (re)launching my blog and renaming it a few weeks ago, I've gotten three consistent responses when I ask for feedback:

1. Who the hell are you, and why are you emailing me?

2. Looks cool. Like the name. But what's it all about?

3. Seriously, how did you get my email?

Lucky for you, That One Guy Who Asked Me, I wrote a quick explanation about the weird name and what you can expect if you're reading. Click the link below to read on.

WhatsApp/Facebook acquisition news and age-ism?

I'm watching lots of the Whatsapp/Facebook acquisition talk unfold. There seem to be two camps:

(1) People rolling their eyes and implying all of this is stupid and saying, "What's the point of Whatsapp, and why the heck use it?"

(2) People who are excited and optimistic about where the worlds of business and startups and communication are heading.

Almost to a man and woman, the former average age is probably 40-45; the latter, maybe 25-30. This isn't bias, this is observation.

Is either side right or wrong? I don't know. But I'd rather look at the world through a positive, hopeful lens than a negative one.

What about you?

Is that just the echo chamber at work or is that how every community feels?

You can test them, create a formula for them, and generally boil them down to science over sentiment.

Assignments aren’t scary.

As editor Gabriel Snyder says, headlines are “naked little creatures that have to go out into the world and stand and fight on their own." You can test them, create a formula for them, and generally boil them down to science over sentiment.

Assignments aren’t scary.

Everyone who’s ever gone to school, listened to their parents, or had a boss/coach/camp counselor/girlfriend/boyfriend/child/pet has carried out something more or less ordered of them.

Grammar’s not scary.

I just used an Oxford comma in the previous paragraph. I know what an Oxford comma is, for crying out loud. And even if I didn’t, you could teach me grammar rules, either by definition or by sight, sound, and feel. (Hey, there’s another Oxford comma. You’re learning now, too. Sorry, that’s my fault.)

Even creativity isn’t scary.

It’s not hard to create something. Better said, it’s not hard to create anything. If it doesn’t have to be good, or coherent, or purposeful, then I’d wager most folks could create something.

Paragraphs.

Paragraphs are scary.

Paragraphs are really freaking scary.

With paragraphs, you need to suddenly enter the uncharted, undocumented, overly cluttered, and under-explored reaches of your mind and your emotions. You’re tasked with taking that headline which so adeptly got you clicks…that assignment, which was so swiftly delivered to you with a goal in mind…that grammar and creativity, which somehow work in tandem to create a thing that also sounds like a decently well-structured thing…you’re tasked with taking all of that, and bringing it to life. And it’s all based on the thoughts you have, whether you start and finish without any external help or you take external thoughts and information and filter them through your mind to produce…something.

If you want that something to be great, then it has to resonate in the mind and heart of those who will encounter your paragraphs. And you won’t ever meet those people, for the most part. But you still better create paragraphs that resonate with them.

Oh, and it better be good the next time too, and the next time, and then break for the weekend, but the time after that? Yep, it’s gotta be good.

No pressure.

We all take risks in our jobs and in our lives. You take a risk when you write code that creates an app that nobody has ever downloaded before. Will it work? You take a risk when you ask that girl out for the first time. Will she say yes?

But for a writer or a creator, whether for business or for fun, our lives revolve around the daily risks we take. Each thing we do is a little risk, with the periodic “might-need-to-change-my-pants" risk thrown in there (surprise!), and each risk takes just a little bit out of us.

That’s because, if we’re doing it right, we’re giving of ourselves. It’s not cheesy or cliche, it’s the Damn Truth (you know it’s true when it’s capitalized). Your investment in your work and the way you twist a concept or some gathered information into words is entirely based on YOU. Your experiences of the world, your humor or lack thereof, your energy or attitude that day — all of this provides the lens through which your paragraphs flow. No two writers would write the same assignment the same exact way. That’s because no one is the same. (There’s a reason you can never get an A+ on a college essay - you can always do something differently, or better, or more aligned with the reader.)

So it’s all up to you.

And that’s scary!

Luckily, risks are what move things forward, whether in personal things or professional. And you, my fellow writer, take risks. Every day. Better than most.

Anyone can do headlines. Anyone can field assignments. Anyone can learn grammar, feign creativity, and produce “stuff."

But you? You operate where it’s risky: in the paragraphs, where things truly resonate.

And the more risks you take, the more you focus on creating wonderful paragraphs, the more your work resonates deeply with an audience, the more you’ll prevail.___

We’ve installed a Gmail app on your phone that you’re gonna check nervously between meetings, on your commute, at home when your fiancee is talking to you, in the bathroom, and generally every moment of gap time you have in your day. Creativity Held for Ransom by Daily Routine [KIDNAPPING NOTE]

We’ve installed a Gmail app on your phone that you’re gonna check nervously between meetings, on your commute, at home when your fiancee is talking to you, in the bathroom, and generally every moment of gap time you have in your day. Gap time otherwise spent allowing your mind to wander. Gap time otherwise spent allowing your deeper thoughts to come out. Gap time otherwise spent connecting the dots between disparate events and experiences and drawing valuable conclusions and creating remarkable new concepts for content.

Oh, and don’t forget to check email when you’re physically in front of a computer too. Yeah. Do that.

2) Attend the meetings. That’s right: alllllll the meetings.

You’re gonna sit in on lots of meetings. Some of them, you’ll find pointless. Some of them, you’ll find are counterproductive. Some of them, you’ll find enjoyable and start thinking positively about meetings — UNTIL YOU REALIZE IT JUST ADDED A USELESS PROJECT TO YOUR DAY! Mwahahaha!

Go on - attend the meetings. You know you want to. You could be missing something really, really important…

3) Check off your to-do list items. That’s right: alllllll the items.

You’re gonna compile a to-do list full of mundane tasks. Then you’re gonna cross off each task, one by one, until your to-do list is empty. And you’re gonna feel great about each item you cross off, despite none of these tasks moving the needle on your major projects or goals.

That’s right, Jay: you’re gonna feel great about doing mundane work and about generally lacking in creativity all day.

4) Get a coffee before you dig into your next big creative project. That’s right: alllllll the—well, okay, that’s probably not realistic. I mean, we’re kidnappers, not dreamers here! Where were we? Oh yes — get a cup of coffee before you start being creative.

You’re gonna finish your to-do list, and you’re gonna face a solid hour or two of creative time. But you’re gonna get up, adjust some items on your desk, and go walk to get a coffee. “But why?” you ask? “I don’t actually NEED a coffee,” you say?

You don’t have a choice. You will do this because we are holding your Creativity hostage, and when you return, you will realize you have precious little time left in your open window before the next meeting.

You will be caught in an endless circle of all these things! And when you do this, we will return your precious Creativity to you! Do this, or else!

Sincerely,

Email, Meetings, and Distractions

The Daily Routine Gang

PS: It’s already too late. We’ve killed off your Creativity!

Don’t let your routine kill your Creativity. Take back your day. Structure it carefully, stick to it even when you feel it’s not working, and just generally ignore email, push back on meetings, and make it your life’s work to avoid distractions and create stuff the world loves.
