Do you personally get more discussion on Google+ or Twitter?
Over on https://twitter.com/Jay_zo I seem to get much more back and forth from a smaller number of followers (2400) vs. here (13000). Do you see the same?

Here's what really grinds my gears about marketing today

(Yes, it's Peter Griffin time)

Everyone in the industry loves to tell you that the key and the approach to modern marketing is to create great content. Then they spend weeks of their lives helping you understand how to come up with a content strategy, a distribution plan, a way to measure ROI, a list of tools you need, and so on.

What's missing?

CREATING the content

Who is equipped to create amazing, audience-building, business-growing content day in and day out? Yes, there are many people in this world who can do so, but are we talking to each other? Teaching each other? Helping those who don't possess those skills? Helping push each other to improve?

If you think about it, content marketing boils down to four general stages: planning, production,... more »

If you think about it, content marketing boils down to four general stages: planning, production, distribution, and measurement. Every activity we can perform can fit into one of those buckets. And there are resources and tools out the arse to help you with the first, the third, and the fourth stage.

In an era where content marketing is maturing -- when you can't be first because others already were, and you can't be loud and churn-and-burn, because that doesn't work -- we need to be better about production.

We need to master the craft of content creators.

If you agree, check out the article below, or sign up for The Daily Content at bit.ly/dailycontent (1 example + 1 lesson to help marketers master the craft of creating content).

Cheers to a brighter future--scratch that, PRESENT--for marketing. ___

Introducing the Daily Content Inspiration email for content marketers

First and only time I'll post/shill this, but I'm running a small daily newsletter for people interested in the craft of creating content online (particularly if you do so in a business or for client businesses) -- blogging, podcasting, design, video, slideshares, and more. Not the marketing component -- the actual production work.

My goal is for this to be incredibly useful w/o requiring much time to consume, so I send 1 piece plus 1 lesson you can learn from the content.

A great post fraught with meaning for entrepreneurs.

This is one of my favorite blog posts on which I've ever worked, however loosely. If you're not in the startup world, you should know that this is an industry that promotes hyperbole and selling the dream. And while founders need to sell the vision all the time, there is a darker side created if/when someone doesn't speak up during tough times.

In Tech Startup Land, everyone claims they're doing great all the time. In reality, lots of entrepreneurs go through their struggles, whether professionally or personally, but they feel so against voicing it since "everyone is killing it" that they further compound their issues. (It's an extreme example, but a not uncommon one, to hear about a founder struggling with depression and/or anxiety.)

Visit a startup’s website, and you’ll eventually drift towards a few standard links, from About to Team to Contact. But among those options, appearing on almost every site, is one link that simply doesn’t belong with the rest: “Blog.”

Don’t misunderstand, it’s not the fact that a startup’s blog exists that’s so troubling. Instead, it’s why it usually exists and why it gets lumped together with all those other basic navigation links — namely, because many startups launch blogs simply because they’re “supposed to.” As a result, most sit idly, gathering digital dust, perhaps getting the occasional company news article, but never gaining any traffic and never becoming what blogs really should be for startups: critical marketing assets.

So the question needs to be asked: Should seed-stage startups even blog in the first place?

Trying to figure out if anyone's found early success w/ content marketing

I do platform and community at a seed-stage VC, NextView Ventures, up in Boston. I recently spent a couple weeks hearing from our portfolio founders about how content marketing is intriguing but execution (especially quickly and effectively) is difficult or unclear.

Just wondering if anyone here has found success and how.

We created this blueprint as a result of my conversations (linked below) which includes specific steps, hacks, and interviews with various startups...but I'm curious to know beyond our portfolio what the sentiment is -- thanks!

Questions about startup content marketing

I'd be curious to know who has/hasn't found success with content and why. I do platform and community for a seed-stage VC, NextView Ventures, up in Boston, and I just spent the last couple weeks talking to our portfolio on the subject.

We then created a step by step blueprint to execute content marketing, which you can find linked below.

What I'd be curious in learning from this group is (A) whether this sort of thing helps and (B) whether you personally have found any success through a particular tactic or approach to CM.

Content Marketing Visual Blueprint + Hacks
(No form to fill out, by the way!)

My firm, NextView Ventures, and I recently published this guide meant to be used as a blueprint to keep at your side as you execute (not an ebook to read cover to cover). It's particularly great for startups but can be used for really any company looking to execute better/fast.

Also included are some startup interviews with those who have found success, as well as several hacks you can use to create content or market that content in sneaky ways that succeed.

What does "remarkable" content mean anyway? A dive into the term on behalf of marketers everywhere

“And maybe that’s worth it, in order to create for a living.”

This thought ended a post-work conversation on the constant need to explain and defend the creative process to others. Those in creative professions can likely relate to the quote, spoken by Tyler, a designer friend of mine.

Now, the fact that he’s a designer isn’t actually a requirement for our friendship. But given the subject of this post, it makes sense that you know he’s a designer. That’s the power of adjectives, you see: They’re subtle but powerful conveyers of meaning and clarity.

But as anyone with a boss knows all too well, some adjectives can just plain frustrate and annoy you. And few are more rampant in the business world today than the word which launched Tyler and my post-work discussion: “remarkable.” Particularly when it precedes the word “content.”

As in, “Jensen, we need a robust, synergistic strategy to create remarkable content and grow up-and-to-the-right quarter-over-quarter!”

(Facepalm.) Thank you, newspaper editor from Spider-Man.

But assume for a moment you had to listen.

Rather than many of our knee-jerk reactions to this request (which, I’m guessing, also involves a knee and a jerk), let’s assume we actually had to create remarkable content, whatever that means.

So, um … what does that mean?

For starters, remarkable can’t mean average.

We all get that. That statement alone isn’t very helpful. But what if you visualized what average looked like?

Why "write for your audience" has become dangerous advice

As a writer who found his way into content marketing, I always felt the phrase "write for your audience" was a bit overblown. Said another way, this common advice runs something like this:

"It's not about you; it's about them."

Huh? Really? I like content marketing exactly because I get to insert my perspective and create something that has emotional and intellectual meaning...for my audience, for sure, but also for me.

I mean, think about it -- have you ever written anything really, truly awesome that wasn’t at least a little bit for you? Where you didn't have at least one burst of momentum or energy or that weird period of creative spark you can only describe as briefly blacking out? (Some of you know what I mean.)

I attended this study abroad program years ago. It's a GREAT program. This is an unfortunate event, but if enough people share this, there's a chance someone can help the police.  Thanks in advance.

Do you personally get more discussion on Google+ or Twitter?
Over on https://twitter.com/Jay_zo I seem to get much more back and forth from a smaller number of followers (2400) vs. here (13000). Do you see the same?

WhatsApp/Facebook acquisition news and age-ism?

I'm watching lots of the Whatsapp/Facebook acquisition talk unfold. There seem to be two camps:

(1) People rolling their eyes and implying all of this is stupid and saying, "What's the point of Whatsapp, and why the heck use it?"

(2) People who are excited and optimistic about where the worlds of business and startups and communication are heading.

Almost to a man and woman, the former average age is probably 40-45; the latter, maybe 25-30. This isn't bias, this is observation.

Is either side right or wrong? I don't know. But I'd rather look at the world through a positive, hopeful lens than a negative one.

What about you?

What business or creative people should I follow?

My feed is getting stale and stagnant! (I'm fine with "me" answers - I need to know who is active right now after a year away from G+!)

What's the difference between writing for a company blog vs. media site? Passion.

Or at least that's what this article argues. I'd be interested to hear from others about whether you agree.

Content Brainstorming Hack + Quick Video (Anyone else fall into this system?)

Because I create content for +HubSpot, I find myself taking one core concept (like, let's say, how to brainstorm) and needing to slice that up into a few different pieces and angles, intended perhaps for a few different audiences.

In my head, I always pictured it like this.

Does anyone find value in Google+ Communities?

I joined several about content marketing but (maybe unsurprisingly) it's all people posting their own stuff to get views.

Is that just the echo chamber at work or is that how every community feels?

Do you think people who work for Comcast, when asked where they work, habitually state the company name followed by, "Sorry..." ? (Seriously, why does this company insist on treating its customers like garbage? And how backwards is that in 2014????)

My wife watches The Bachelor on TV. Unless I'm in my bedroom, I can't NOT see the TV. Ergo, I watch....the....um....Memo to 15-yr-old Jay: we watch less sports but we get the girl (Also, we never dunk. Sorry dude.)
