New Website!

If you follow me on Twitter then you may of heard of my frustrations with Wordpress and that I was slowly moving everything over to Squarespace for peace of mind. The hours I've wasted on Wordpress are too many, time where I could have spent doing more interesting and important things instead of staring blankly at code.

So here it is, my new site that also brings together my portraiture and pet photography.

http://kirknorbury.co.uk/

I'm still updating a few things so please forgive me if a font or colour looks weird.

Towards The Cuillin Hills - Isle Of Skye

There's something very magical about Skye and after my first visit there last week I can see myself visiting this beautiful Isle time and time again in the near future. I've already started the slow process of organising, processing and editing the 1500 images I took during our time exploring. I can already see quite a few images that I'm really proud of! :)

This image was taken down at the shoreline of the small village of Elgol which lies south of the Isle with a gorgeous view looking towards the Cuillin Hills. I love how moody the shot is, it was pretty sunny for most of the day but in the afternoon there was some heavy storm clouds heading south that really changed the atmosphere of the landscape.

I'm currently updating my website so you can prints of my work but if you're interested in buying a print of... more »

Lindisfarne Castle - Holy Island

I've just finally finished editing all the shots I took in Northumberland the other week. Here's one of Lindisfarne Castle taken while walking up to the castle, it was a sunny day with lots of clouds so a great opportunity to use my 10 stop filter to get a bit of motion in the clouds. I'd love to go again but stay throughout the night to get some night sky images with the castle.

I love this spot, It's a great location for long exposures especially when the tide is in. Hopefully next time I go there will be a lovely sunset.

I've been pretty busy lately, writing articles, meetings, planning talks etc but it's always nice to visit local spots in-between. I've been to Dalcairnie Falls many times but it's always good to find new shots that you hadn't seen before.

Further down from the main falls I found this smaller waterfall that proved to be quite difficult to get to as the area was overgrown and very slippy due to the rainfall from the night before. After an awkward 10 minutes of slipping and sliding down through the mud I made it down to the bottom so I could get a nice low-angle shot of the water.

Loch Coruisk - Isle of Skye

If you ever go to the south of Skye I would recommend taking the boat trip from Elgol to Loch Coruisk which sits on the south side of the Cuillin Hills. The walking around the area is amazing with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, I think next time I go would love to spend the whole day there or camp.

Make sure to check out my latest Wex Photographic article featuring my favourite spots on the Isle of Skye: http://www.wexphotographic.com/blog/a-photographers-guide-to-the-isle-of-skye

Dunstanburgh Castle - Northumberland

Just got back from a couple days away in Northumberland with my family, it was great to visit some locations that I've always wanted to take a camera to like Dunstanburgh castle and Lindisfarne as they've always been on my list. Out of all the shots of the castle I took that afternoon this was my favourite as I really like how I captured the motion in the water as it crashed against the rocks.

Updated Website

Over the last couple days I've been integrating some new features, designs and pages onto my photography website including a print store. There's still more that I want to add to it including my images from the Isle of Skye which I'm hoping to have finished editing in the next couple of days so make sure to keep checking it over the next couple of months.

For now here's an image taken on the River Sligachan when the clouds were coming in.

Neist Point Lighthouse - Isle of Skye

One place that I really wanted to visit during our trip was the famous lighthouse you see on all the postcards down on Neist Point which is on the most westerly tip of Skye. The weather was typically Skye during this day, glorious sun-shine one minute, pissing down the next!

After Rach and I walked around the lighthouse and cliff edges we started to head back towards the car but I couldn't leave without walking along the top cliff edge to get a shot of looking down at the lighthouse. It was extremely windy up there, so much so that I couldn't use my 10 stop filter without getting a blurry image no matter how hard I hung onto my tripod!

I'm still working my way through my images from Skye and also writing a new article for Wex Photographic at the same time so I thought I'd post a new image from the other day taken at Troon, Ayrshire.

I love going back to this location and trying new things, different compositions, different weather just to see if I can make something new that's more interesting. This is definitely my favourite shot so far from this location so far.

I do miss the snow at the moment as I'm not one for the heat. I would take -10 any day rather than summer heat! This shot was taken on the Rannoch Moor back in January, I'll actually be driving through here on Saturday so it'll great to see how much it's changed since then.

On Saturday we'll be going to the Isle of Skye for a week, I cannot wait! I just hope the weather is on our side. :)

Element

We all have our elements, places in which we thrive and feel at home with our craft. For me, it's the Scottish Highlands. A place filled with majestic beauty and stunning landscapes, a place I can go to time and time again and never get bored of it. This is me in my element...

Todays glorious sunshine makes me miss the cold as if you know me, you know that I'm not too keen on heatwaves as I prefer to be freezing cold rather than roasting hot! This shot was taken on the banks of loch Lomond in January when the clouds were coming in low over the hills. I really like the negative space in the image and emptiness that it creates.

Checked out my new website yet?: www.kirknorbury.co.uk

New Vlog Video - 2013 Trip To Iceland

I'm going to start creating more vlogs on my YouTube channel, show what happens behind the scenes and my daily life as a photographer. In my second episode I take you back to 2013 when I visited Iceland. The footage was sitting on my hard drive gathering dust and I've always wanted to put it on there on youtube, so here it is!

Bluebells

I love photographing Bluebells but they can be a little difficult to find at times in Scotland. Most of the time I just stumble upon them when I'm not looking for them which is always a nice surprise. These were photographed on Friday while I was running a photography workshop along the Ayrshire coast and we found a small patch of them near one of the cliff edges.

Sometimes I really enjoy sticking an ND filter on the front of my lens, shoot long exposures and see what images I can create while waving my camera around like a madman! This was taken at Loch Lomond in January while there was snow everywhere.

I really need to get myself up to the Highlands again sometime soon, I had such an amazing trip last time that I want to explore the area even more. This shot was taken at Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond, I used a 10 stop filter to smoothen out the water which made the boat a little blurry but I actually like it this way.

My new website is now live so make sure to check it out!

I don't tend to edit my night sky images into black & white but when I converted this image it just looked so much better. Due to the full moon high in the sky the stars weren't as bright as they usually are so this shot looks like it could have been taken in the middle of the day, something I love about shooting during a full moon.

I love walking around Turnberry lighthouse at night, it's a great location for photographing the night sky due to the low amount of light pollution in the area but there's enough light to aluminate the lighthouse.

The other day Rachael and I made the trip over to North Queensferry to spend the day at Deep Sea World aquarium, it's a great place to visit especially if you have kids. But we couldn't go without spending a little bit of time at the shoreline to photograph the Forth Bridge!

Ardrossan beach is one my newest favourite locations along the Ayrshire coast, Arran is a lot closer and there are some great shots to be had in this area. I have to always check the tide times for this area as the landscape dramatically changes from low to high tide. This shot was taken as the tide was going out which for me is my favourite time to be there.

I've been playing around with different focal lengths recently, this shot was taken at 85mm as I needed a focal length that could get the shipwreck remains to look bigger in the frame as I couldn't get any closer. A wide-angle lens would just make it look too small in the frame.
I need to go back there during low tide to see if I can get a different perspective of the remains.

Turnberry Lighthouse

Straight off the press! This is a brand new image I took last night of the Milky Way down at Turnberry Lighthouse on the Ayrshire coast. I've been planning this shot for the last couple of weeks, keeping an eye on the weather, location of the Milky Way in reference to where I'll be and the moon phase. I don't have a lens that would document the scene the way that I wanted so creating a panorama seemed to be the best way to go about it.

Stitching together 6 vertical images allowed me to control the composition and include as much of the Milky Way as I could, the resulting image weighs in at 169 Megapixels and the TIFF file is just over 3GB's!

Prints of this shot are now available so if you're interested please send me a message or an email through my website.

I've only posted a couple images from our trip to Glen Etive in January so here's another one. I felt this shot looked so much better in black & white than it did in colour.

A beautiful golden sky over the Highlands

This was taken at the car park that looks over Loch Tulla, we had finished for the day and I wanted to see if I could get a couple more shots as the light was disappearing.
