Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/2)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca  #sharedcircles #circles #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:30:374321214692CC G+

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 04.19
Today is the birthday of the French impressionist painter Eva Gonzalès, who was born on April 19th in 1849.  She was taught to paint by Manet as his only formal student.

Considering the lack of freedom at the time for women, that alone is a verification of the talent she must have shown at an early age. Unfortunately, also a sign of the times, she was remembered more as his model than as his student.

After so much of controversial subjects as religion, mythology and weird symbolism, let's end the week with no big story, just her view of the Beach at Dieppe, where she evacuated during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871.

Have a weekend and holiday as serene as this lovely landscape and tread lightly

One thousand years ago, on Good Friday 1014, the Battle of Clontarf was fought just outside Dublin
The Battle of Clontarf pitched the forces of the Munster over-king Brian Boru and his allies against the armies of north Leinster, Dublin, and Viking mercenaries and allies from across the sea. Brian has been seen as a paragon of Christian leadership, who struggled against all odds to rid Ireland of the perils of conquest by pagan Vikings. He won the battle, but made the ultimate sacrifice in losing his life while praying for victory.
Like all good stories, this stereotypical account of the battle is a blend of fact and fiction. Clontarf was undoubtedly a significant event. Nevertheless, the celebration of this event in literature, over the centuries, is a fascinating topic in its own right.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 04.18
We interrupt the series about Easter with a work by Gustav Moreau, the French Symbolist painter who died on April 18th in 1898.  Moreau was trained in the academic style, but soon rejected its formalism, and influenced by his love of old masters, as well as the Pre-Raphaelites, developed a style that would greatly influence the emergence of Symbolism.

He had an incredible volume of output, creating over 8000 paintings, drawings and watercolors during his lifetime.
It seems that he was an opium addict and he definitely had an incredible imagination, which comes out in the many, many details of his works. Moreau's favorite subjects take the viewer from ancient history through the East and through the more lurid Biblical tales.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 04.17
We continue with art related to Easter, this time with the Last Supper by Ernst Fuchs, one of the founding members of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Fuchs was born on February 13th in 1930 and continues to work until this day.

This work is located in the Church of St. Egid in Klagenfurt, near my new home and I visited it last week. Unfortunately, there are no decent images available on the internet, so please make due with my photographs.

St. Egid is a lovely Church, and is home not only to this large painting, but also a whole Chapel done by Fuchs.  This honor is due to the close friendship that Fuchs developed with the Carinthian Theologian Dr. Karl Matthäus Woschitz, whose home Parrish is St. Egid. It was also an essay by Dr. Woschitz, which helped me appreciate this work.

Today we depart again from the normal subject of these posts, by looking at a Fastentuch made (or at least designed) by Konrad of Friesach in 1458.  It's located in the Basilica of Gurk, in Carinthia, and with 81 square meters, it is the largest Fastentuch in Austria.

So what actually is a Fastentuch? Well, it's origins are said to go back to the Jewish Temple Curtains, and it a cloth, or veil, that is used during Lent to cover visual depictions of Christ, usually a Crucifix at the altar of a Church.  It's latin name is 'vellum quadragesima' or Veil of 40 Days, and is usually used between Ash Wednesday and Holy Saturday.

The purpose of the cloth or veil is to separate the community from the Altar and the Reliquary, so they can no longer watch the Liturgy but only hear it. In a way thisad... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 04.14
... will not be forthcoming today, and here's why:

After spending two wonderful days with my daughter in Vienna, I was on my way home to Carinthia, when, still within the city limits, all four lanes of traffic on the highway came to a dead halt. At first it was stop and go, then we stood for almost an hour - all four lanes. I could see a helicopter about a kilometer ahead, first circling and then disappearing from view, most likely to land.

We finally started moving again, very slowly and passed the site of a tragic accident. A car had gotten smashed between two trucks, one in front and one behind. It had been squeezed so much that at first I did not even notice it.  This incredible scene had me preoccupied for most of my drive, which took five hours instead of the usual 3.5.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 04.13
Today is Palm Sunday, which is the beginning of Holy Week for Christian believers.  Palm Sunday commemorates the Entrance into Jerusalem of Jesus Christ.

This fresco from the Monastary Decani in Kosovo, which was established in 1327, is one of many depictions of the event in early Christianity.  Though there are still some few contemporary artists who take up the theme, on the whole it fell out of favor sometime during the Baroque period.

And yet, there are some intriguing symbols or allusions to be found. These center on the tragic irony that a man who is received with acclaim and cheers entering the city, will leave it to be executed only a few days later after having been betrayed, humiliated and tortured. One has to ask, how did such a thing come to pass?

We see a hint of this question as animpo... more »

On the many shades of grey on scales of both neuroses and light-vs-dark, we take a fairly large step towards pathology and darkness by celebrating the Birthday of Alfred Kubin, the incredible Austrian draughtsman and painter, who was born on April 10th in 1877. Compared to Kubin, yesterday's Rossetti was a model of serene sanity.

But Kubin had every reason to be traumatized: only meeting his father at the age of two, watching his mother die at 10, then his aunt (and step-mother) died in childbirth a year later, seduced (I want to say raped) by a pregnant woman at 11, attempting suicide at 19, etc.  Freud would have had a field day.

It is no wonder that his art, heavily influenced by the German Symbolist Max Klinger, was the expression of a confused and tortured soul. His works, mostly pen-and-inkdr... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 04.09
Today's artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who died on April 9th in 1882, is a perfect counterpoint to yesterday's Picasso. While Picasso was a vibrant, lusty and energetic, larger than life personality, Rossetti was the embodiment of the typical neurotic, Victorian artist (both as poet and painter).

But there are also similarities, both were crucial to the founding of a new style, Picasso to Cubism and Rossetti to the Pre-Raphaelites (he was one of the three founding members of the Brotherhood).  Each produced works that simply cannot be confused with anyone else's, and both had numerous and complicated relationships with women.

This painting by Rossetti, the Beata Beatrix is his homage to his wife, Elizabeth Siddal, who was probably one of, if not the first 'superstar' models.  She was&#... more »

Today is another (relatively) easy day: we remember Picasso, probably the giant of art in the 20th century, who died on April 8th in 1973.

There is even less I can say about Picasso than there was for Van Gogh. I will leave you to form your own opinion of his works. Just one thing:

As I was putting this collection together, it once again came to mind what a fascinating mind he had. To think that over the span of more than 70 years, this artist managed to balance repetition of subjects and style, while at the same time providing not only major innovations in art (cubism, etc.), but also creating variations of his subjects that it never gets boring is truly amazing.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 04.07
At the risk of repeating myself, today we once again celebrate the English female artist Vanessa Bell, who died on April 7th in 1961.  Bell was, like her sister of Virgina Woolf, a member of the avant-garde Bloomsbury group in the early part of the 20th century.

Also like her sister, Bell defied conventions and eschewed elaborate details in her works. Instead, like here, in her Studland Beach, she focused on simplified shapes, heavy outlines, and suggestions rather than exact descriptions. The whole image has a slightly melancholy air, one of remembrance and departures. And, like Woolf's novels, it throws the viewer (reader) back upon one's self, needing to make one's own meaning through associations and memories of personal experience.

This is where many viewers may think "I (my child) couldh... more »

Though not conducive to 'Getting Things Done' Sunday naps are a wonderful thing. But now it's time to pay homage to one of the three great Old Masters of the Renaissance, Raphael, who was born on April 6th in 1483. While not as innovative as the other two (Michelangelo and Da Vinci), Raphael was nevertheless an unqualified success in his own time, only in the 20th century have voices begun to disqualify his greatness for not having been innovative enough. But even more than the two others, I love his work and the gentility of his paintings.

Here is one of his very early works, The Three Graces, done between (depending on whom you ask) 1502 and 1505, in which the typical Raphael-Face was not yet developed, but which still shows the marvelous talent of this magnificent artist. It is said that the inspirationf... more »

Preparations for Easter
One of the many fascinating aspects of moving from an international city out into the country is becoming acquainted with the local customs and traditions. Now that winter and is over, we are finally at a point where we go on regular discovery tours, whether by car or by bicycle

Yeah, picture this: me on a bicycle, and I haven't even injured myself yet! I was admitedly concerned, seeing as how my last foray into sportsmanlike activities in February ended with a broken tailbone.

But I digress. One of the traditions in Kärnten, or at least this part of it, is the "Easter Tree", which are usually indoor decorations: twigs of either Pussy Willow, Forsythia or other bushes are put into a vase and decorated with easter eggs. The eggs are actually only the shells, which have been dyed and painted by hand. These are often small... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 04.05

Today's artist is the Italian Baroque painter Francesco Solimena, who is believed to have died on April 5th in 1747.  Solimena was actually ordained, but never practiced his priesthood, having been patronized early in his career as an artist. He worked for the most part in Naples and southern Italy and was, on the whole a fairly 'conventional' artist, sticking to the formulas and trends of his time.

Which does not mean that he did not produce imposing and beautiful works, as this interesting painting of St. John the Babtist proves. And yes, I know, we just had St. John as a child, but here he is a bit older and what an interesting depiction this is.  Though I've spent at least an hour scouring the net, I can't seem to find any explanation for the pose or the painting - if you have somein... more »

OK, enough with the weird and the demons, for those of you still here, you deserve a break, so here is St. John the Babtist as a Child by Bartolome Esteban Murillo, who died on April 3rd in 1682. Murillo was a painter of the Spanish Baroque and painted mostly religious subjects such as this one.

One other subject that seemed to fascinate him was children, he painted many of them, often very naturalistic scenes of beggars, or street-kids, which provided an interesting contrast to his idealized religious paintings.

That's all I have today, have a good one and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 04.02

There is a story about a conductor, who, not happy with the less than lukewarm response to a piece of modern music turned to his audience and said: "I'm afraid our rendition was not good enough to convey the wonders and quality of this piece. We will therefore repeat the performance." ... and he did ... to standing ovations once it was done.

I have no idea why this popped into my head looking at yesterday's post, but it did.
So.
In my arrogance, and because today is his birthday, I offer another piece by Max Ernst, this time his Temptation of St. Anthony. This painting was made in 1947 as an entry in a competition, to which 12 of the 'Apostles of Modern Art' were invited to participate. Ernst's entry won against Dali's spindly Elephants (among others) and he received a... more »

Today we remember one of the 20th century's most fascinating artists, Max Ernst, who died on April 1st in 1976, just one day before his 85th birthday.

Most of the artworks of the last month have been 'easy' ones in the sense that they were either accessible on a purely aesthetic level, or they clearly told a story, even if it was an unfamiliar one. That changes with today's work by Ernst, the early work called Dada-Gauguin, which was completed in 1920.

Like much of his work, this painting is not easy to appreciate. It hovers on the brink between Dada and Surrealism, is full of Freudian (i.e. sexual) imagery and can seem disturbing. The forms are simplified, the figures almost like cut-outs, seeming like a parody; mocking the purity and simplicity of Gauguin's Tahitian subjects.

Another week begins and we start with Jules Pascin, who was born on March 31st in 1885. Today we would call Pascin a person of multi-cultural background, or a true candidate for 'diversity'.

Born in Bulgaria into a family of Sephardic-Jewish background, his mother was of Italian-Serbian, his father of Spanish-Sephardic background, originally from Ruse, Bulgaria, he was educated in Vienna and Munich, traveled in the US during WW I and became a US citizen, but spent most of his adult life in Paris, where he was known as 'the Prince of Montparnasse'. So, while he is officially deemed to be an 'American Expressionist', we could also call him an Bulgarian or even French artist.

Like Toulouse-Lautrec, his main subjects were taken from his surroundings, friends and prostitutes. His affinityf... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 03.30
Today is the birthday of one of my favorite artists, Vincent van Gogh, who was born on March 30th in 1853.

There are over 7 million entries under his name to be found on Google, and over one million with the word "biography" added.  There is nothing that I could conceivably add to the mountains of information available about Van Gogh, whose untimely death at the age of only 37 deprived the world of such a magnificent artist.

What can one even try to say about an artist who created psychological masterpieces like the Potato Eaters, grandiose visions of the cosmos such as Starry Night, and could make views of  Tree Roots or a Patch of Grass so fascinating?

I won't even try.

Just one tip, as you go through these paintings, you may want to pay attention to what this man can dowit... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 03.28

Today we move from the Baroque and Rococo to Romanticism of the late 19th Century and also to America. We remember Albert Pinkham Ryder, the visionary American artist who died on March 28th in 1917.

Here is his Flying Dutchman, painted sometime before 1887, which is a great example of his work because, like most of his work we can see:
- the coloring, particularly the predominance of yellow (usually moonlight)
- the application of paint, very thick, often in sloppy layers, has caused darkening of the colors as well as cracking and disintegration of the surface
- he ignored the details and made no discernible effort towards 'realism', concentrating instead, on the element important to his interpretation of the subject
and finally:

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 03.27
On this slightly gloomy Thursday it seems appropriate to balance the mood by looking at a painting with humor, the Alexander and Campaspe in the Studio of Apelles by the Venetian painter Giambattista Tiepolo, who died on March 27th in 1770.  Tiepolo is regarded as the great Italian painter of the 18th century, and when one looks at his works it is easy to see why.

Tiepolo produced a large number of works, traveling throughout Italy and Germany to fulfill his commissions. Though much of his art is religious, altarpieces, devotional paintings, etc., he is best remembered for his secular works, and here for his historical, allegorical, mythological works, both on canvas and in the numerous fresco cycles he produced in various palaces.

His patrons were wealthy politicians and aristocrats, who saw art not onlyas... more »

After so much goodness yesterday, I need a visual palette cleanser. So here is Venus Ordering Arms from Vulcan for Aeneas, by Jean II Restout, a French painter who was born on March 26th in 1692.

Restout was part of a veritable dynasty of painters, the Restout Family, which boasted eight artists in three generations. Jean II painted mostly altar pieces, but also a number of canvases with mythological scenes such as this one.

Regular readers will know to expect regular posts about myths, and Venus is a favorite, although she is usually shown in conjunction with Mars.  Here she is in Vulcan's forge, ordering Arms for her son Aeneas, who, as second cousin once removed from the Trojan king Priam, was fighting for the Trojans.

Aeneas is mainly known as the hero of Virgil's Aeneid, which tells thes... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 03.25
We return to the subject of women, but today not with one painting, but with a whole album. In the sixth century, March 25th was calculated to be the date of the the Annunciation of the Virgin Birth by the Roman Church Historian Dionysius Exiguus. Now this had a number of historically interesting consequences on the Calendar, but let's focus on the Annunciation.

The selection in this album is only a small excerpt of the myriad paintings of the Annunciation. The earliest image I found was actually not a painting, but a ceramic from the 6th century. And still the subject fascinates artists. During the Renaissance it was almost a duty for any self respecting artist to paint at least one Annunciation, many painted multiple versions.

The number of paintings, scenes in illuminations, tapestries, murals, frescoes, altar... more »

.... and Happy Monday to all.  Today you get to follow the mysterious twisting paths of my mind: our artist is the French Orientalist Théodore Frère, who died on May 24th in 1888. Why him? Because I like this painting, the Caravan Crossing the Desert.

Somehow, this procession made me think of Mondays, maybe it's the idea of a line of people, moving along in a landscape of haze, slowly, without any great enthusiasm or reluctance, moving on relentlessly, just because.

That reminded me of two things, first of all of all the commuters especially on Mondays, most with the same lack of enthusiasm, moving mindlessly and automatically in the haze. For some reason that led me to Shakespeare's great soliloquy from Macbeth:

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day today,... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 03.23

Today we have another painter who painted mostly women, Alphonse Osbert, the French Symbolist painter born on March 23rd in 1857. Though Osbert and yesterday's American Impressionist Miller may even have crossed paths in Paris, their 'take' on paintings and especially on the subject of women could not be more different.

Miller shows us women as real, physical and even sensuous beings, in all manner of daily activities and poses.  Osbert, influenced by both his Symbolist friend Puvis and the 'high priest of pointillism' Seurat, produces quite different works.

This painting, the Muse at Sunrise, is a good example. The brushwork and application of paint is very much in the style of pointillism (or 'scientific'), even though the colors are, as in all of Osbert's work mutedan... more »

Yesterday we had a painter who produced many (homoerotic) male nudes, today we have an American Impressionist, born on March 22nd in 1875, who painted almost exclusively women.  *Richard Edward Miller,* or Richard Emil Miller, was born and raised in St. Louis.

He moved to Paris to continue studying art at the Academie Julian, and became part of the 'Giverny Group', which spent summers in Giverny at or around the estate of Claude Monet. in 1909 Miller was asked to participate in the eighth Biennale in Venice, where his work was well received. An unintended consequence of this show was that because his name was incorrectly given as Richard Emile Miller, he is, to this day known under both versions of the name.

After so much 'sweetness and light', today we turn to heavier subjects with Polytes, son of Priam observing the Greeks. This work is by he French artist Hyppolite Flandrin, who died on March 21st in 1864.

Flandrin was a favorite student of Ingres, which can be seen in the classical compositions and execution of his paintings.  While Flandrin is remembered most for his religious works, like Ingres, he used classical themes and narratives as an 'excuse' for showing the nude Human body.  However, where Ingres preferred the female body, Flandrin's classical scenes all focus on nude young males.
The subject here is Polytes, the son of Priam, who was 'King' of Troy and had many, many children. It was Priam's son Paris who began the Trojan war by abducting Helena. Here we see Polytestak... more »

Halfway through the research for the artist for today, I took a good look at the GoogleDoodle and changed my mind. So, Sir Edward Poynter will have to wait for another day, because: Today, we celebrate not an artist, but a universal event, The Beginning of Spring, with the painting Primavera, by Sandro Botticelli.

Botticelli painted Primavera for Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco, a cousin of Lorenzo Medici, presumably in celebration of Pierfrancesco's marriage in 1482 - in any case, the painting was hung in the bedroom of Pierfrancesco's palace. The original title of the painting is unknown, it was Giorgio Vasari, who said the painting was 'about spring', 70 years after its conception.

The work is large, over 2x3 meters, more the size of a tapestry than of a painting and is Tempera on a woodp... more »

Today we need something lighter, so let's remember Dirk Hals, the Dutch painter born on March 19th in 1591. He was the younger brother of Frans Hals, the well known painter of portraits.

Perhaps wisely, Dirk chose not to compete with his brother in the area of portraits, and focused on genre painting, mostly indoor scenes of feasts and groups of people enjoying themselves. But he also painted a number of scenes in gardens, of which this,  the Fete Champetre is one.

Ordinarily, we would see a simple garden part, with food, music good company and a good amount of flirting. We see a typical 'garden of love' scene, such as was very popular in the middle ages. We can also see it as an allegory of the senses, all of which are represented in the painting.

But, there's also another messageher... more »

On this Tuesday we remember the Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler, who was born in Bern on March 18th in 1853.  I wrote a bit about Hodler and his life last year in a post with one of his landscapes here: http://goo.gl/o7vODB.

But today let's have a look at one of his other, both more controversial and typical works: The Day.  This is one of a number of mural like paintings that Hodler created in the 1890's. These paintings showed rhythmically arranged groups of human figures, with no discernible 'story' or subject, but instead expressing ideas or ideals. These are not works of realism, but neither are they simple allegories.

In The Day we can see the application of Hodler's ideas of parallelism, which was so important to many of his larger works. The principle of repetition, which we can seehe... more »

Today is the Hindu Festival of Holi, also known as the festival of colours or the festival of love.  Holi celebrates the return of spring after winter, the triumph of good over evil and is a day of joyful, playful celebration, very often including colouring others with coloured water of dry powders.  There are some spectacular photos all over the web showing scenes from the festivals, which are no longer limited to India and Nepal, but take place all over the world.

Franz Marc's Fighting Forms shown here, recapture some of the tension and sheer energy that I associate with Holi.  There is nothing restrained, civilized or 'couth' about this painting, it is what today we call 'in your face', which is a part of what Holi is as well.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Rosa Bonheur, a French female (!) artist born on March 16th (or 22nd?) in 1822. She was arguably the most successful female artist of the 19th century, exhibiting at the Salon in Paris for the first time at the age of 19.

Bonheur not only painted but also sculpted, mostly animals. She subscribed to the Realist school and had her own menagerie of animals, though she would also visit slaughterhouses to study their anatomy. While her work is always anatomically true, it never has any sentimentality - defying any (past or present) pre-conceptions about female artists.

This work, Changing Meadows, made in 1863 is not one of her more famous ones, but it is one that I particularly like. It shows a flat boat, filled with sheep who are being transported across a body of water from one... more »

Today is the Ides of March, a day many may recognize as the day that Caesar was murdered in 44BC.  Originally, the Ides of March was just one of many 'Ides' - each month of the Roman Calendar had a day called Ides around the middle of the month.

The term 'Ides of March' became famous after Shakespeare used it in his play Julius Caesar. In the first act, second scene, a soothsayer cautions Caesar to 'Beware the Ides of March', but is bundled off by Caesar's guards.  So, while some say that the Ides of March is just like any other day, if you look, you can find lists of events that occured on a March 15th that will include horrendous things such as the stabbing of Caesar in 44 BC, the abdication of Czar Nicholas II in 1917, and (gasp) the cancellation of the Ed Sullivan Show by CBS in197... more »

It's a sunny Friday and that is as good a reason as any to enjoy another landscape, this time Bentheim Castle by Jacob van Ruisdael, the Dutch Baroque painter who was buried on March 14th in 1682.  Ruisdael was born into a family of painters, both his father Isaac and his uncle Salomon, under both of whom he studied, were landscape painters.

Ruisdael himself took their lessons a number of steps further and became the principal Dutch landscape painter of the 17th century.  His dramatic style, sweeping vistas and often turbulent skies with small human figures were to have great influence on the "Romantic" landscape painters such as Caspar David Friedrich in the following 18th century.

Though trained in the classical style, Ruisdael came to portray nature not so much as an external&qu... more »

Wow! Yesterday's painting must be an all time favorite, one that will be difficult to top, so I won't try. Today's work, Hammersmith's Roof Garden, by William Glackens is quite different. This is not so much a 'pretty image', its value is more in its context.

The American painter William Glackens was born on March 13th in 1870. He is remembered as one of the "Eight" painters and a contributor to the Ashcan school of painting.  These artists painted mostly scenes of urban realism, most often of either middle class or lower class people and activities.

Hammersmith's Roof Garden is one such painting. The first major work by Glackens, it was completed in 1901, and shows an interior scene of the Roof Garden that Oscar Hammersmith had built on his Olympia Theater in New YorkCi... more »
