Mia Voss35,933It's a New Year! Let's jumpstart it with a Weekend Edition of @109324423871490315778 Power Chat.  Check out this amazing lineup of panel guests who will fill us in on what they think is the latest & greatest for 2015: @115620878851836664537 - Author, Speaker, Analyst. _I travel a lot. I surf the web even more. Over the last four years I've spent time in fifteen countries and three continents making airports and hotel rooms more of a constant, for me, than home. I also spend more hours, each day, online than most people would consider to be healthy. The one stability in all this is Google+ where I can be found, time allowing, on most days. It has become my anchor._ _In my posts, interviews and podcasts I add pieces to the puzzle. I explain how each one fits in a bigger picture. How that bigger picture then makes sense. Sensemaking changes everything._ _Before I got here, I used to be a corporate rat who used to be a journalist, before I jumped ship into full-time writing, speaking and blogging._ @115137076899523837053 - One of my favorite teenagers & aspiring DIY host. I rely on Kiragan to help me keep up with the cool kids!   Kiragan is an eighth grader and an aspiring You Tuber.  You can find her watching a season a day of Netflix when she is not playing basketball four days a week.  In the future she hopes to own her own business because she loves people and being her own boss. Her Instagram is the bomb.com and you should follow her!  http://instagram.com/kiragan_07 https://twitter.com/kiragan_07 YouTube: Kiragan Mercer @103158283130494425954: Rachel is pursuing concurrent Master's degrees in urban planning and information science at the University of Michigan, with the aspiration to design human-computer interactions at the urban scale. Specifically, Rachel is interested in designing how people will interact with emerging technologies -- such as drones, autonomous cars, and pervasive computing -- within the city, with an eye towards making sure these technologies promote positive human interactions and greater community engagement. She has previously worked at the Brookings Institution and the World Resources Institute, and holds BAs in English and environmental humanities from Stony Brook University.  @106628164966864339997 - @112784356967153325101 Zack Jones is a college dropout entrepreneur that is shooting to change the way we define housing. When he decided to quit his academic career and his day job to pursue a new path as a business owner, he had no idea where his tiny idea was going to take him. Fast forward three years to now and Zack has brought his idea off the napkin and into the most demanding phase of a new business, the startup. Aside from being obsessed with tiny houses, Zack is passionate about creating learning pathways that are uniquely tailored to each individual persons needs and excited to chat about how starting tiny is a promising first step to something so much larger! The Codebreakers286@117270149460674807194 tackle the latest incarnation(s) of  the *_Princess Paradigm_* this *Wednesday, Dec. 10th at 10a Mountain / 9a Pacific / 12p Eastern.*  As with many Disney films, Frozen is the story of princesses who live in a world dramatically different from ours. They face hard times, but survive them with pluck and good humor....and the inevitably perfect hair ;-) The emblematic song _"Let It Go"_ has gotten close to a cumulative _1 billion_ YouTube views (over several versions) and let's not even mention the multitude of merchandise that is coming out "just in time for the holidays." *Clearly, there's something here that resonates with tons of people.* _But what is it?_ Does our desire for happily ever after, rainbows and unicorns, and pretty pink castles help things go viral? Is this because women are making most of the buying decisions, or because today's parents have a hard time saying "no" in general? Is it harmless and fun, or has the fight for equality between the sexes been undermined by this tradition? *Join us as we discuss the Princess Paradigm and what makes it a viral force to reckon with in our culture.* Mobile:  YouTube:  Google+:  Meet the #CodeBreakers : (In alphabetical order)   @102000982871890720967  Super Power -> Communication @113426828273677356184   Super Powers-> Strategist, Visibility Control, Protector of Lawns @110414588049062912447  Super Power -> Humor, Wordsmith   @112697555988864915254  Super Power -> Engagement, Funnies and Gamification  @101146817884405744944  Super Power -> Psychology and Psychometrics  @116135963476096063106     Super Power -> Philosophical and Sociological Analysis  @104641199698156385999  Super Power -> Engagement, Creativity, and Misspelling  G+: http://goo.gl/G6Nrj5  @113690073826160821557  Super Power -> Data Analysis  @104683923092143784953  Super-Powers -> Perception, Vision-creation +*Michael Sutton* Super Power -> Entrepreneurship   @114630301405242981651  Super Power -> Rule-breaking!  @104267556228949747305  Super Power -> The Number Whisperer #PandemicCode  Are we "Frozen" in the Princess Paradigm?2014-12-10 18:00:0033
martin shervington1,144,980You know I spend most of my time on Google+, right? Well, increasingly I've been valuing the role of using Twitter alongside - the cross platform connections make a huge difference to building relationships. So, I thought you all may like to dig a little deeper and there is no one better to ask in than @108947920975167979671 on this one as he is just bringing out a new edition to his book. He has a solid business view of social as well. So, hope to see you on Wednesday; and we will be taking questions so please ask away! About the book: The book was initially created to solve a problem. The most common question am I asked is, "Can you help me understand Twitter?"  That is just not something that can be addressed over a cup of coffee! So I wrote this book, first to help my students, but it caught on has loyal fans all around the world.  The Tao of Twitter teaches you the practical MINDSET for success, not just a bunch of theoretical or technical suggestions. If you follow the strategy in the book, I know it can work for you because I have seen it impact hundreds of lives. The Tao of Twitter is beyond a book. It's a movement. Welcome to a global community that is unleashing the power of this amazing communication platform to connect to the world and drive new business benefits in wonderful and unexpected ways! The Tao of Twitter! SEOWiSE957*Framing and Agenda Setting: Defining how we see the world* This is an episode of _The Paradigm Shift_ you won't want to miss. _Why?_ Because framing defines the way we see our world. It defines the way we further communicate and the way we do business. *Note: If you decide to share this or comment in other platforms...* Please use the hashtag #Paradigmshiftweb . That way we can track it (paradigm shift alone has been used way too much for us to keep track). *Agenda setting and framing* I will explain how the two are inextricably intertwined and really why they are so crucial to understanding the rest of communication. Though generally spoken of in terms of political communication and the news, it needs to be understood that we cannot communicate without framing and agenda setting. *In terms of business* I'm sure you can already see how this is applicable to doing business today, but @115620878851836664537 will take it one step further and explain how framing and semantics are intertwined, and how _that_ changes the way we do business. If we better understand the frames in which we live and the frames in which others view the world, can we be more successful in the digital age? Further, are we less likely to get stuck in our own agenda or worse, an agenda set by others? Tune in Thursday July 17th for what I think will be an incredible discussion! *Warning:* I have already been asked to extend this particular episode so David and I agreed that this conversation may go for 45 minutes rather than the originally planned half hour. *Start loading in your thoughts and questions now!* Thank you @115091224082668507135 for the awesome graphics!Framing: Whose Semantic Frame Are You Living In?2014-07-17 18:00:0058

SEOWiSE957*The Paradigm Shift* _The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web_ *New:* We're trying to track activity so if you share this event anywhere else please add #paradigmshift ! I am thrilled to announce my newest show with @115620878851836664537. Through our interactions on his brilliant @110793088683846123648, David and I have developed clear connections between communication concepts I regularly use in Communication Studies and the new Semantic Web that businesses are learning to function in. *The show break down* _In a half hour David and I will..._ I will briefly explain a communication concept. For our first show we are starting really basic. *I will explain the two-step flow of communication:* Its history, the basic model and components within that model, and how we generally study it within communication. David will then take the concept of the two-step flow of communication and apply it to his expertise: Business today. *David will explain how the two-step flow of communication functions within the semantic web and why its important for businesses to consider.* Finally, we will address any questions that you all raise for us, so bring your thinking caps! A big thank you to @115091224082668507135 for the banner! The Paradigm Shift - The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web2014-06-19 18:00:0087

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,223,393We're live on Google Hangouts! Watch the digital teach-in here: http://youtu.be/yb1sYK8aGGI Submit questions via Twitter using the hashtag #404Day   On April 4th, EFF is partnering with the Center for Civic Media at MIT and the National Coalition Against Censorship to bring attention to the long-standing problem of Internet censorship in public libraries and schools for 404 Day. Join us on Friday, April 4th from 12pm-1pm PST for a digital teach-in with some of the top researchers and librarians working to analyze and push back against the use of Internet filters on library computers. Mark your calendars, and check back soon for more information about how you can tune-in. Speakers: Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Deputy Director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. Chris Peterson, a research affiliate at the Center for Civic Media at the MIT Media Lab. Sarah Houghton, Director for the San Rafael Public Library in Northern California. Moderator: April Glaser, activist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation We also invite librarians and concerned bloggers across the country to blog about Internet filtering in libraries on 404 Day to raise awareness and share stories of free speech infringing censorship in schools and libraries. Want to blog about it? Write an email to april@eff.org to let us know. About Children's Internet Protection Act & Censorship in Libraries Over 10 years ago, Congress passed the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), a bill that brought new levels of Internet censorship to libraries across the country. The law is supposed to encourage public libraries and schools to filter child pornography and obscene or “harmful to minors” images from the library’s Internet connection in exchange for continued federal funding. Unfortunately, aggressive interpretations of this law have resulted in extensive and unnecessary censorship in our cherished public libraries, often because libraries go beyond the legal requirements of CIPA when implementing content filters. As a result, students and library patrons across the country are routinely and unnecessarily blocked from accessing constitutionally protected websites.404 Day: A Day of Action Against Censorship in Libraries2014-04-04 21:00:0067

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,223,393We invite you to join us for a live Google Hangout on Tuesday October 1st at 2 PM Pacific / 5 PM Eastern to learn more about the TPP's copyright provisions and their impact on users, their effect on U.S. copyright law, and how we can work together to protect our access to knowledge, digital rights, and internet freedom. There will also be time for Q & A. Even though we successfully killed SOPA and ACTA, special interests groups continue to pour millions of lobbying dollars to push policies that would further restrict our rights to knowledge. Unable to pass such measures through our legislative process, they’re using secretive, non-democratic tactics to fold harsher copyright restrictions and enforcement measures into a larger trade agreement. The latest and biggest threat on this front is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a multinational trade agreement being negotiated between the United States and 11 other Asia-Pacific countries. Speakers: * Lori Wallach: Director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch * Krista Cox, Staff attorney at Knowledge Ecology International (KEI) * Maira Sutton, Global Policy Analyst at EFF * Parker Higgins, Activist at EFFTPP, Copyright, and Users' Rights: Google Hangout with EFF, KEI, and Public Citizen2013-10-01 23:00:00105

Susanne Ramharter89,550Am Freitag, dem 16.8. kommt +Michael Lee Johnson nach Wien. Michael unternimmt soeben dabei wildes (wahnsinniges?)

Reinventors Network830,112Here's a really hard problem that Larry Lessig is not sure how to solve: "Let's assume we've got a fundamentally corrupt government, in the precise sense that the dependence upon "funders" corrupts the intended dependence upon "the people alone," and that too many within that system are too deeply connected to it to push for its change. That means any effective movement for change has got to come from the outside. How would a grassroots movement in the Internet Age create the pressure such a change would require? How would the people who brought the Internet to scale tackle this problem?" Joining Larry in his effort is a veritable who's who of internet know-how, the folks who have built & scaled networks for change: internet pioneer Tim O'Reilly, Change.org Founder Ben Rattray, Moveon.org Executive Director Anna Galland, VC Brad Burnham, Executive Producer of TED Media June Cohen, Bram Cohen, creator of BitTorrent, and Markos Moulitsas, Founder of Daily Kos. Reinvent Money in Politics2013-07-11 20:00:00191

My Korean mother is pretty good at cooking - she once owned a pop-up noodle shop in Busan, South Korea.  My American mother keeps it basic.  It's shown me that passion for cooking is really something you're born with - even if you have no idea what's on the ingredient list. My food will be easy, cheap to make, and fun to eat... it will also have a twist of the Midwest, since I tend to pass on anything too fishy. We'll be cooking easy and inexpensive Korean food!                                     ************************** On Sunday's show, Michelle will be making *Mandu Two Ways* - (*Mandoo*) She’ll be making fried dumplings and dumpling soup.  It’s the perfect Korean comfort food to start off the wintry New Year!  Here is the recipe: http://bit.ly/S7hvOn *Watch Michelle LIVE on this Event's page, on +Larry Fournillier's Profile Page* or on www.hangoutnetworks.com  #hoa   #hangoutsonair   #michellelikoreankitchen   #koreanrecipes  Michelle Li's Korean Kitchen - Mandu : Episode 01 - 6:00PM(EST)2013-01-07 00:30:0058

Mick Fealty14,324All across the world, systems are crashing. In banking we've seen debt slicing and long haul internal systems like that of RBS/NatWest/Ulster Bank literally falling apart. In Europe post war notions of solidarity are being stretched to bursting as sovereign nations argue over the degree to which fiscal sovereignty can be shared.   Further afield the Arab nations continue in popular tumult after several generations of acquiescence under varying degrees of autocracy. Yet like Greece, Spain and Portugal to the north - each just one or two generations ahead - the Arab world is finding that democracy does not come in a shiny, ready wrapped box. Even in more settled democracies, once venerable institutions are finding huge problems keeping up with the speed at which their citizens can communicate, not through them but around them.   Why not join our panel this Friday for #DigitalLunch  at the usual time, where we will attempt to serve starters about 1pm and finish before the hour is out? #DigitalLunch: Crashing systems2012-09-28 14:00:007

Good Morning Google+
while reading about a marvelous exhibition called Organic Matters at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, (see here: http://goo.gl/B8j24T) I came across the work of Ysabel May, a Canadian born artist who now lives and works in Texas.

Originally, my attention was caught by this work, The Reflection, which is on view at the exhibition, because it reminded me of the painstaking detail so often shown in the works of old masters. For a moment, I actually thought it might be an oil painting from the 17th or 18th century. But a closer look showed that this work actually has a few surreal aspects.

The reflections, for which the work is named, are not only at the bottom, where we would expect to see them, but also at the top of the work, where they simply make no sense. While the floral wreath at the bottom of the work reminds me of... more »

Bros on horseback, oh my!
The region in which I live sports a number of wonderful, curvy, mountainous roads that are beloved by motorcyclists. Having been what we call a 'motorbike-bride' for most of my life, I understand the pull of these roads completely.

Seeing the bikers, in their helmets and dress has often reminded me of the knights of old. Both are not recognizable in their uniforms, are on very powerful, often destructive, forms of transportation, and have a bit of 'bad boy' aura.

So imagine my delight at finding this article, which is not only a quick read, but also quotes one of my all-time favorite authors: Mark Twain:
"You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus"
which is so stunningly true not just about history.

I got myself into trouble here with some quotes .....
I re-shared a post with some quotes, the attributions of which were probably not quite correct, and was reprimanded in the comments.
Because that was such a success, I found some (fictitious!!!) quotes by artists about their works at +Hyperallergic  here: http://goo.gl/o0QNSb, and had to share this one.
Bonus points to anyone who can describe what this actually means!

Have fun and tread lightly (especially in the comments)

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art:
Last night we had a truly wonderful display of the Perseis meteor showers. Because these showers usually occur around August 10th, which is the Name-day of St. Laurentius, the showers are often referred to as the "Tears of Laurentius".  St. Laurentius was treasurer for the Church of Rome in the 3rd century, under Pope Sixtus II and in the reign of the Emperor Valerian.  In 257, Valerian began a wave of persecution against Christians, including the beheading of Sixtus II.

It is still not really clear whether Valerian acted thusly from purely religious motivation - he did believe that it was important to keep up worship of the old Gods. It is still not really clear whether Valerian acted thusly from purely religious motivation - he did believe that it was important to keep up worship of the old Gods. However, financial reasons probably played a role as well. It is said that after the death of Sixtus II, Valerian ordered Laurentius to hand over the treasure of the Church of Rome. Laurentius instead distributed the treasure among the populace and then gathered the poor, sick and needy, which he presented as the 'true treasure of the Church'.

Valerian was having none of it and had Laurentius roasted alive on an iron grill on August 10 in 258. Thus the connection to fiery showers and the 'tears of Laurentius'.

The showers and the story reminded me of this image, called Representation of Strange Occurrences seen in connection with two comets in 1456 in an illuminated manuscript called the Lucerne Chronicle by Diebold Schilling.  The image is a combination of gore and (to us) humor, and, seen in our day, is rather whimsical and quaint.

Have some whimsy in your day, and tread lightly

The reflections, for which the work is named, are not only at the bottom, where we would expect to see them, but also at the top of the work, where they simply make no sense. While the floral wreath at the bottom of the work reminds me of some of the works of Rachel Ruysch, one of the premier female artists of the 17th century, a closer look shows that LeMay's work is actually not realistic at all.

Neither is it a painting, but an amazing piece of digital art.  Ysabel LeMay works with photography and digital editing, often working with images cropped from many, many photos, and re-assembles these into truly fascinating works. All of her works have elements of nature in them, some more obviously surreal and 'made up' than others. But even her most life-like, floral compositions never descend into the mundane or trivial sentimentality.

In sum, they are a joy to behold and a challenge for the brain as well.

Let your own brain be challenged today and do, tread lightly

Happy Birthday to HH the Dalai Lama
This extraordinary man has been both hero and role model to me for many years now. That he can still talk about compassion, when he knows exactly how the people of Tibet are made to suffer under Chinese occupation, is simply humbling.
I was blessed to see him in Vienna a number of years ago, and, though I was in a cheap seat far from the stage, his personality filled the hall pervasively.
May he live many, many more years.
May his spirit of joy and compassion touch many more people.
and ... may the Tibetan people soon be free of occupation and suppression.

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, Animated: History’s Greatest Parable Exploring the Nature of Reality | Brain Pickings

'...“Reality,” wrote Philip K. Dick, “is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.” And yet how are we to be sure that what we observe actually is? After all, so much of what we experience as reality is the product of our remarkably flawed perception.

Some 2,400 years earlier, Plato explored this very question in his famous Allegory of the Cave — perhaps history’s most masterful figurative inquiry into the meaning of life and the nature of reality — found in Book VII of his Republic (free download; public library).

Indeed.  You can skip to the last paragraph, it says all there is to say:
"If your job is to serve your community — every member of it — then that’s what you do. You can’t as a firefighter decide you’re not going to put out a blaze in an atheist’s home. You can’t as a postal worker decide you’re not going to deliver mail to a transgender person’s apartment. And you should not be permitted, as a county clerk, to decide your private feelings overrule your official duties. Your obligations are spelled out in your job description. They include issuing marriage licenses. If that’s a problem, then I guess it’s time to look for another job, huh?"

Good Morning Google+
Art is a form of communication. Whether the artist's intention is to commemorate an event, teach a lesson through a story, honor an institution or just express personal feelings, there is always communication involved.

All images, whether paintings, drawings, or photographs, are made to communicate something. Often times, those works that carry a definite 'message' come off as heavy handed, or quickly descend into pathos and Kitsch. (for an extreme case: think sad eyed religious figures on black velvet)

It is rare to find paintings that address the coming Climate Change (and yes, it is coming) in such a way that the quality of the work itself does not get smothered by the message. Today's artist, Mary Iverson, manages this feat quite wonderfully in her paintings.

It is rare to find paintings that address the coming Climate Change (and yes, it is coming) in such a way that the quality of the work itself does not get smothered by the message. Today's artist, Mary Iverson, manages this feat quite wonderfully in her paintings.

Regardless of the messages, these works are in and of themselves, as aesthetic visual images, intriguing objects. The perspective guidelines lead the eyes, drawing our attention to various parts of the paintings we might otherwise overlook. The playful variation of detail and blocky areas make one curious: why detail here, and not there?

All in all, these are powerful paintings, both from an aesthetic point of view and from their messages.

Have a wonderful day, and tread lightly

The most moving thing I've read in a long time

Beaches - by +R. Harlan Smith
Once upon the good old days on Miller Beach

When school was out with nothing more to learn or teach,

The most moving thing I've read in a long time

Beaches - by +R. Harlan Smith
Once upon the good old days on Miller Beach

When school was out with nothing more to learn or teach,

You played along the shore with all your pretty friends

Regardless of a world where space and time descends.

Such seasons fade as night persists to day, although

I still recall your small transistor radio.

Abandoned to the joys sweet summer’s green age brings,

You tanned and talked of boys and other teenage things,

Then blending noisy Rock and Roll commotions

With glistening skin and fragrant tanning lotions,

You freed them to the breeze across the sunny sand

To me, your small transistor radio in your hand.

We lived in worlds of yours and mine too far apart.

At best, you stayed a secret of my dreaming heart,

But as the world of time and space went passing by,

We lived our lives to complicate or simplify.

A million miles from here, a million years ago,

Yet still I hear your faint transistor radio.

I sailed away toward the Mediterranean seas

Where rows of olives grow to scent the morning breeze,

And there a vast and placid azure mirror lies

In calming smooth repose, between Athenian skies,

Afar from frigid Indiana sand and snow,

Away from you and your transistor radio.

Along some cold and jagged weather ragged reach

Of stormy Winslow Homer watercolor beach

The gale blew windward strong to meet my bow with rain,

I beg don’t get me wrong I’m not one to complain,

I wept. Don’t ask me why, it was so long ago,

The memory of you and your transistor radio.

Now, here upon this dry and ancient desert plain

I rock and think of you and watch the monsoon rain.

No way to navigate this old Sonoran sea,

No Miller Beach, no sweetly scented melody,

I have my little cat, my pipe, and coffee near,

Transistor music ever gently haunts my ear.

And even though my table waits with cups for two,

There is no you, my love. Oh, God, there is no you.

Imagine the 'Ethical Options' for self-driving cars
+Yonatan Zunger does an excellent job of formulating ideas and questions that have been bouncing around in my head for quite a while. Now I don't have to worry about actually formulating them, just read his post, it's excellent!

#ethics   #treadlightly   #technology   #selfdrivingcars

Ever since seeing this article a few days ago, it's been bugging me. We know that self-driving cars will have to solve real-life "trolley problems:" those favorite hypotheticals of Philosophy 101 classes wherein you have to make a choice between saving, say, one person's life or five, or saving five people's lives by pushing another person off a bridge, or things like that. And ethicists (and even more so, the media) have spent a lot of time talking about how impossible it will be to ever trust computers with such decisions, and why, therefore, autonomous machines are frightening.

What bugs me about this is that we make these kinds of decisions all the time. There are plenty of concrete, real-world cases that actually happen: do you swerve into a tree rather than hit a pedestrian? (That's greatly increasing the risk to your life -- and your passengers' -- to save another person)

I think that part of the reason that we're so nervous about computerizing these ethical decisions is not so much that they're hard, as that doing this would require us to be very explicit about how we want these decisions made -- and people tend to talk around that very explicit decision, because when they do, it tends to reveal that their actual preferences aren't the same as the ones they want their neighbors to think they have.

For example: I suspect that most people, if driving alone in a vehicle, will go to fairly significant lengths to avoid hitting a pedestrian, including putting themselves at risk by hitting a tree or running into a ditch. I suspect that if the pedestrian is pushing a stroller with a baby, they'll feel even more strongly this way. But as soon as you have passengers in the car, things change: what if it's your spouse? Your children? What if you don't particularly like your spouse?

Or we can phrase it in the way that the headline below does: "Will your self-driving car be programmed to kill you if it means saving more strangers?" This phrasing is deliberately chosen to trigger a revulsion, and if I phrase it instead the way I did above -- in terms of running into a tree to avoid a pedestrian -- your answer might be different. The phrasing in the headline, on the other hand, seems to tap into a fear of loss of autonomy, which I often hear around other parts of discussions of the future of cars. Here's a place where a decision which you normally make -- based on secret factors which only you, in your heart, know, and which nobody else will ever know for sure -- is instead going to be made by someone else, and not necessarily to your advantage. We all suspect that it would sometimes make that decision in a way that, if we were making it secret (and with the plausible deniability that comes from it being hard to operate a car during an emergency), we might make quite differently.

Oddly, if you think about how we would feel about such decisions being made by a human taxi driver, people's reactions seem different, even though there's the same loss of autonomy, and now instead of a rule you can understand, you're subject to the driver's secret decisions.

I suspect that the truth is this:

Most people would go to more lengths than they expect to save a life that they in some way cared about.

Most people would go to more lengths than they are willing to admit to save their own life: their actual balance, in the clinch, between protecting themselves and protecting others isn't the one they say it is. And most people secretly suspect that this is true, which is why the notion of the car "being programmed to kill you" in order to save other people's lives -- taking away that last chance to change your mind -- is frightening.

Most people's calculus about the lives in question is actually fairly complex, and may vary from day to day. But people's immediate conscious thoughts -- who they're happy with, who they're mad at -- may not accurately reflect what they would end up doing.

And so what's frightening about this isn't that the decision would be made by a third party, but that even if we ourselves individually made the decision, setting the knobs and dials of our car's Ethics-O-Meter every morning, we would be forcing ourselves to explicitly state what we really wanted to happen, and commit ourselves, staking our own lives and those of others on it. The opportunity to have a private calculus of life and death would go away.

As a side note, for cars this is less actually relevant, because there are actually very few cases in which you would have to choose between hitting a pedestrian and crashing into a tree which didn't come from driver inattention or other unsafe driving behaviors leading to loss of vehicle control -- precisely the sorts of things which self-driving cars don't have. So these mortal cases would be vanishingly rarer than they are in our daily lives, which is precisely where the advantage of self-driving cars comes from.

For robotic weapons such as armed drones, of course, these questions happen all the time. But in that case, we have a simple ethical answer as well: if you program a drone to kill everyone matching a certain pattern in a certain area, and it does so, then the moral fault lies with the person who launched it; the device may be more complex (and trigger our subconscious identification of it as being a "sort-of animate entity," as our minds tend to do), but ultimately it's no more a moral or ethical decision agent than a spear that we've thrown at someone, once it's left our hand and is on its mortal flight.

With the cars, the choice of the programming of ethics is the point at which these decisions are made. This programming may be erroneous, or it may fail in circumstances beyond those which were originally foreseen (and what planning for life and death doesn't?), but ultimately, ethical programming is just like any other kind of programming: you tell it you want X, and it will deliver X for you. If X was not what you really wanted, that's because you were dishonest with the computer.

The real challenge is this: if we agree on a standard ethical programming for cars, we have to agree and deal with the fact that we don't all want the same thing. If we each program our own car's ethical bounds, then we each have that individual responsibility. And in either case, these cars give us the practical requirement to be completely explicit and precise about what we do, and don't, want to happen when faced with a real-life trolley problem.___Imagine the 'Ethical Options' for self-driving cars

Good news from Afghanistan
Getting Men to stand up for the rights of Women is a wonderful step towards gaining equality. Edit: in response to critics and comments:

Obviously, this is not your typical Empower poor Women project. Unlike other campaigns, it addresses the issue of men's mindsets, which is central to any sustainable change in the place of women in a society.
Furthermore, it acknowledges and takes into consideration two important factors:
1) a change in the status and empowerment of women affects men at just as much. One cannot change the status and options of one half of the population without causing major disruption to the living circumstances of the other half. So, to go beyond the symbolic nature of a few token women in positions of power, a change in the mindset of the whole population must occur.

2) this is one of the first internationally supported campaigns that does not simply try to impose its views of the rights of women onto a culture, but actually works with the culture (most often dominated by men), to effect change. Respecting the historically evolved views of the male population towards women, however bizarre they may seem to outsiders, is an integral aspect of getting those views to change.

Yes, it is not a short-term solution, it will not show results as quickly as getting a few women to be visible as shopkeepers or daring politicians, but ultimately, I am convinced that this is the better way.

Check out the website of the campaign here: http://www.heforshe.org/

Does #distractinglysexy  provide valid retribution, or just a cheap laugh?
I stumbled on this video this morning and my first, spontaneous reaction was laughter and a sense of righteousness in the response to such comments, made by  no less than a Nobel Laureate.  Women have it tough enough to gain acceptance for making contributions (in any field) that are just as  intelligent and worthwhile as any man's.

So yes, there is a large element of righteous anger shown both in the video and in the #distractinglysexy  campaign on twitter.

And then, there is the other aspect. The one that shows how in our day of social media and global networks - which provide almost immediate world-wide dissemination of ideas and information - the reputation of a man can be all but destroyed.

And then, there is the other aspect. The one that shows how in our day of social media and global networks - which provide almost immediate world-wide dissemination of ideas and information - the reputation of a man can be all but destroyed.

Tim Hunt is a biologist and Nobel Prize winner (see here: http://goo.gl/6rheOM), who taught at University College in London - yes, he was forced to resign from his position as honorary professor. He has since also resigned (or been sacked) from other posts he held, such as the Royal Society and the European Research Council.

In his own words:
“I am extremely sorry for the remarks made during the recent Women in Science lunch at the world conference of science journalists in Seoul, Korea,..
_ I accept that my attempts at a self-deprecating joke were ill-judged and not in the least bit funny. I am mortified to have upset my hosts, which was the very last thing I intended. I also fully accept that the sentiments as interpreted have no place in modern science and deeply apologize to all those good friends who fear I have undermined their efforts to put these stereotypes behind us._
In my own career I have always tried to treat my colleagues with respect and kindness, whoever they are, and am proud to have developed and mentored the careers of many excellent young scientists who will be tackling tomorrow’s biological problems long after I have left the scene. I would like to ask that people accept my apology as heartfelt and judge me on my record"

Suddenly, the twitter posts and the video no longer seem so funny. Certainly, the remarks were rather stupid. But I honestly believe him when he says that they were an attempt at humor, and more about himself than his general attitude toward women.

To be so humiliatingly shamed and lose all respect for his life's work is a horrible consequence for a few unreflected, throw-away comments, hot even meant seriously. Would that the same shit-storm forced many politicians or CEO's, who say and do much worse things, out of their positions where they do much worse damage.

Please do tread lightly in your own dealings with the reputation of others.

Nepal may be safe, but they still need help
Things have become quiet about Nepal. After the media deluge in May, one rarely hears about the after-effects of the devastating quake anymore. But that doesn't mean that all is well.

As you can imagine, it has been an unusually busy time for ETC. Our Nepal-based staff has been working very hard to begin helping earthquake victims - this, despite the fact that our staff members themselves experienced major damage to their own homes and significant disruption to their own lives.

The most pressing need as expressed by quake victims in our project area in Dolakha District has been adequate shelter to weather the summer monsoon season. Nearly 100% of homes in that area were destroyed or damaged to the point of being unsafe to inhabit, and the makeshift tents and lean-to shelters that people initially put up would not be able to withstand strong wind and heavy rain. ETC is therefore partnering with Project Ek and Shikshya Foundation Nepal to provide building materials and training for villagers to erect tunnel-style shelters that will get them through the monsoon season (see photo, immediately below). The materials can later be re-purposed as part of rebuilt permanent homes, beginning in the fall.

I was able to visit both ETC's offices in Kathmandu and see their work first hand and know that whatever I donate to them will truly go to their efforts in helping the children and women of Nepal.

So, if you feel like donating, but are not certain about the organizations behind various fund-raising, this is an organization I can not only recommend, but will vouch for with my own reputation.

Good Morning Google+
Just like the last week, today has been hot and sunny, which reminded me of Edward Henry Potthast.
By pure coincidence, today is his birthday, as he was born on this day in 1857.

Since it's too hot for new big thoughts, see the post below for more about him, or read this one: https://goo.gl/v60W9D.

And, no matter the temperature, do tread lightly.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 06.10
Today is the birthday of Henry Potthast, the American Impressionist painter born on June 10th in 1857.

This is one of his Beach Scenes, for which he is best known. These were all produced based on the concept of realism (normal people, no idealism), and in the Impressionistic manner, which he became familiar with when traveling in Europe. Potthast based these works on scenes he found around New York City in the summers and produced them during the last 20 years of his life.

Since I'm busy today I must leave it at that, have a wonderful warm day and tread lightly

sorry about the first picture without text. Here's the thing:
int the last few months, I've noticed spam showing up in my inbox supposedly sent by myself. Today I got another one from something called Clear Vision, but with my own eMail address as sender.

Pressing the stopsign (spam?) on the android app brought up the image of my own Google+ profile, but with the name "Clear Vision". Imagine my surprise.

So there is obviously the possibility that someone is accessing data on my profile that is not public, and using it to circumvent spam filters.

This is a serious breach in privacy - can you please get a statement about this from +Google+? How can I prevent this?

Thanks!

Future Wind-Parks could look like this
Imagine harnessing wind energy without the noise and the danger to birds, both major issues when trying to establish such a park in many areas, both in the US and in Europe.
If the Vortex Bladeless technology manages to live up to its promise, it will be worth a few dollars in helping to crowdfund the project.

A Credo about Ideas
This is a true Must-Read from +Neil Gaiman .
It is the clearest, most straight-forward summary of my own attitude about ideas that I've seen yet.

I believe that, instead (or, if you must, along with) various pledges of allegiance, prayers etc. this is something that every school class should be forced (yes, I said forced) to repeat every morning.

And it would not hurt if the adults did so as well.

So do tread lightly with ideas, whether they are your own or others'

Good Morning Google+ 06.02
(well, it's morning somewhere! ;-)
While reading about the upcoming auction of one of Manet's most well-known paintings, the Le Bar aux Folies-Bergere, dated 1881, I had to think about the incredible differences, and similarities to his Olympia, dated about 20 years earlier in 1863 (see here for the image: https://goo.gl/1cenVL).

The style has become much more relaxed, the paint is applied loosely, and it is one of his typical every-day scenes and not a somewhat salacious peek into the boudoir of a courtesan.  And yet, I find a similarity in the aloofness in both faces, the two women are each wrapped up in themselves and their own worlds.

Both the painter and the viewer seem to be intruders on a private scene.

To highlight this imminent threat to our way of life, we’ve teamed up with award-winning agency Don’t Panic and artists KennardPhillipps. Fire consumes three classic American landscapes, leaving in their place a dystopian vision of the future, a combination of the original paintings and imagery from real-life oil spills and disasters.

The famous artworks torched by Shell include ‘Christina’s World’ by Andrew Wyeth, ‘Pearblossom Highway’ by David Hockney and ‘An Arctic Summer: Boring Through the Pack in Melville Bay’ by William Bradford.

The collaboration between KennardPhillipps, Don’t Panic and Greenpeace working with classical artworks has several nice precedents. In 2013 Greenpeace attempted to install a large painting of Shell’s drilling rig, the Kulluk, run aground in the Arctic at the National Gallery during a Shell corporate event. The previous year, Don’t Panic’s television show ‘The Revolution Will Be Televised’ managed to install a print of Peter Kennard’s famous artwork ‘Haywain With Cruise Missile’ into the same National Gallery around the time of a corporate event held for Italian arms manufacturer Finmeccanica.

We won't stand aside while Shell risks everything we hold dear. It's time for ordinary people around the world to join together to protect the Arctic from Shell.

Good Morning Google+ 05.31
Two years ago, it was a cool and rainy May morning, just as it is today. So maybe it's ok to repost the story I wrote then about a wonderful painting by Tintoretto, who died on May 31st in 1594.

Enjoy your Sunday and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+
It is unusually cold and rainy this morning, so in protest, I am calling #funfriday  . To help get into the mood, today's painting is The origin of the Milky Way by Tintoretto, the Venetian mannerist painter who died on May 31st in 1594.

Let's start at the beginning: the term "Milky Way" is based on the Greek galaxias (adj.), in galaxias kyklos, literally "milky circle," and is closely related to Greek Mythology.  The almighty Zeus (Jupiter), known for his incessant womanizing, had fathered the child Heralcles (Hercules) with the mortal woman Alcmene. He loved this child and, in order to bestow immortality on it, he held the boy to feed at the breast of his sleeping wife Hera (Juno). Understandably, this woke Hera (Heracles looks like he already had teeth), who, startled at both the pain and the insult, jerked away and sprinkled milk into the firmament. The drops of milk became stars, thus creating the "Milky Way" - you have to love these myths!

Tintoretto shows the scene here in his usual style. Zeus is floating in the sky to the bed of Hera, which incidentally also floats in the sky - see the clouds underneath it at the bottom left. Underneath Zeus is one of his symbols, an eagle, holding his thunderbolt, after all, Zeus needs both hands to hold the child. On the right the peacocks tell us that this is Hera, and the four floating putti hold a net, bow and arrow as well as what looks like a chain, all symbols of the ties that love brings with it.

But what makes this a typical Tintoretto painting are the dynamic composition and the dramatic poses of the figures, first and foremost that of Hera. Her body is twisted, at once leaning on her bed and reaching out in the opposite direction, the use of foreshortening and definition of her muscles giving the impression that she is virtually exploding from her place of rest.  Tintoretto's use of light and shadows, which would in his later work dominate over his love of brilliant colors, creates a sense of plasticity and space.

Just the thing to relieve a dull day.

May your day be dynamic and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art:
Today we remember the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, who died on May 30th in 1640. Here is his Feast of Venus Verticordia, which is located in our own Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

This painting, like many of his works, is huge, more than 2 meters by 3 meters. At first glance, one is tempted to dismiss it as one of those old, overloaded Baroque works. However, there is more here than just a lot of fleshy, half naked bodies, which no longer adhere to our current aesthetic standards.

If one knows how to 'read' the symbols, there is quite a story being told:

Venus was revered not only as the Goddess of love, but also of fertility and here, as Venus Verticordia, the Changer of Hearts. Signs of fertility abound, there are the many fruits, particularly apples, which are a symbol of Venus, as... more »

If one knows how to 'read' the symbols, there is quite a story being told:

Venus was revered not only as the Goddess of love, but also of fertility and here, as Venus Verticordia, the Changer of Hearts. Signs of fertility abound, there are the many fruits, particularly apples, which are a symbol of Venus, as well as grapes, representing Bacchus, and grain for Ceres. Together these point to a proverb by Terence: "love grows cold without food and drink".

Just look at the women; there are definite differences among them. There are the decently dressed matrons, who help bathe and dress Venus, then the rushing brides, bringing dolls, symbols for progeny, for blessing by the Goddess, and the courtesans, who frolic with the satyrs. Very differentiated and all referencing various aspects of Venus.

And finally, my favorites, the putti (!). The painting just seems to overflow with them, both boys and girls (a rarity), where the boys have wings, but the girls do not. Yes, it's not fair, but at least they are included. Both sexes point not only to great fertility, but in their play and frolicking, they also show the joy of life.

May you find joy in life today and tread lightly

Heart, Brain and Courage
Yesterday, I coached a workshop and one of the participants, a truly lovely lady, reminded me once again of this scene in The Wizard of OZ.

In our Brand Me time, one is often confronted with people who seem to be very sure of themselves, convinced of their opinions and abilities. Self-confidence, whether justified by facts and reality or not, is what we meet every day.
As Bertrand Russel said:
"The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt."

But every so often, you meet someone who, suffering the (self-)doubt of the intelligent, just makes you yearn to give them a certificate, a medal, or some other visible sign of their self worth, something that will let them see themselves just a little like you do, as a gem amids the pebbles on the beach.

I get new paintings shown every day, and today's artist is Adriaen van de Veene, a painter of the Dutch Golden Age.  It reminded me of my favorite painting by Van de Veene, Fishing for Souls, which was the topic of the post below almost two years ago.

Being the irreverent creature I am, I had to wonder if today's battles for dominance in the internet are not a bit similar.  After all, just like with religions, the adherents of our modern contenders are every bit as passionate and convinced of their truths as were the combatants of the religious wars.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 11.12
Another day, another Dutch painter, but this time a work completely different from yesterday's titillating Titans.  Today we remember Adriaen Peitersz van de Venne, who died on November 12th in 1662 with his painting Fishing for Souls from 1614.

This painting, completely Baroque in its content and composition, as described by +R. Harlan Smith below, is an allegory, based on Christ's words to his disciples, "I will make you fishers of men."  However, it's aim is less the spiritual aspect of that quote and more a slightly satirical, political statement about the competition for followers and 'souls' between the various factions of religious communities in Holland at the time.

It is fairly easy to see where Van de Venne's sympathies lie: on the left, we see soberly dressed Dutch men in orderly groups surely involved in serious and pious discourse.  In the foreground is a boat, again with soberly dressed men, fully in control of their boat, attracting souls with prayers and teachings and then pulling them in with a net.

In contrast, the boat behind them is in danger of capsizing, there is little order and or control, instead of prayers the Catholics are using incense and a strange type of creche with the Baby Jesus (?) to attract souls, aided by the band of musicians in the boat behind them.  We can see even Pope holding on to a piece of the net, more a hindrance than a help.  Even the Flemish crowd on the bank at the right is not quite as sober, those in the front with rosaries and then the pomp and circumstance of Church processions in the background.

What I find interesting is the rainbow in the background, which touches both sides of the riverbank equally. Is this a way of pointing out the common thread in both forms of Christianity? Whatever it is, it takes a bit of the sting out of the scene, which would otherwise smack a bit much of Bruegel.

Have a rainbow in your life today and tread lightly

oh, by the way: where are the women?

Additional Information provided by +R. Harlan Smith :

Adrieane Pietersz van de Venne  1589-1662 Dutch Golden Age Baroque painter and engraver of genre scenes, portraits, and allegories.
Adrieane Pietersz van de Venne, I'll call him Adrieane, painted, for the most part during the Baroque period, which you may recall began in Rome, Italy around the turn of the 17th century. You may recall the Baroque style was typically a lively style of painting, featuring brilliant coloring with an exaggeration of motion with a sense of drama. These features stand out particularly because the preceding trend of painting, Mannerism, was rather droll in its palette and altogether lacking in drama, or action.
Adrieane's work offered a wonderful documentation of life during his time with scenes of recreation on a large scale, and other more dramatic scenes with only two or three figures such as his "Poverty", a wretched looking man carrying a raggedy old woman, and his "Al te bot" (trans. altogether too stupid), the depiction of two men holding a woman's head to a circular grind stone to sharpen her wit.
What's interesting about Adrieane is he also worked with Grizaille.
Who knows what is Grizaille? Raise your hands.
I see no hands.
Grizaille comes from the French word "griz", meaning the color grey. A grizaille is simply a painting done in one color (monochromatic). Other colors can be used*;* when brown is used the work is aptly called "brunaille" (brun - French, brown); or green is called verdaille (verd - French, green). A grizaille may be done for its own sake, which is common, or as an underpainting for applying layers of color over it (glazing). A grizaille may also be used as a foundation rendering for an engraving.
You will see several examples of grizaille among the works of Adrieane Pietersz van de Venne.

For the most part, there are only victims. During the war, I lived in the State of New York, the state with the second highest casualty rate. I remember the older brothers of friends being drafted, our protests, and the constant tension.

But seeing the Vietnamese people, proud of their independence, people just like everyone else, well, it brought home once again the fact that there are simply no absolute truths when it comes to the relations between humans, whether on an individual basis or between cultures or nations.

But, lest we get too maudlin here and I must go off to drown myself in the next big puddle: enjoy the music, let the sullen, whining guitar of Jimmy Page take you to a happier place, and tread lightly

Oh the irony! Not sure whether this deserves a belly-laugh or a face-palm

Republicans - you know - those people always talking about the Bible and morals etc. to justify their very misanthropic political goals? Well suddenly, because the Pope is supporting positions that do not fit into their world views, NOW they want religion to stay out of politics.

I'm not even going to waste one minute to find examples of their hypocrisy, if you really need proof, well, teh Google is your friend.

But you know, for the first time in many years, the direction this Pope is taking the Catholic Church is looking better and better.

For your Saturday enjoyment, see what can be done with flowers. The idea to make an art exhibition using flowers is unique, and judging by the pictures, very successful.

Not only are the compositions stunning and a bit haunting, but I wonder if the slow deterioration of the flowers will be part of the exhibit, giving it metaphysical aspects if one chooses to see them?

Enjoy your own flowers today and tread lightly
