How do we bring affordable internet to everyone?
Maybe finding an answer starts with looking somewhere new, like up.  And trying something different, like balloons.  That's right, balloons.  Because it turns out, that if you use balloons, it's faster and easier and cheaper to give everyone the internet than it is to give some people the internet.

An incredible project we've been working on at Google[x]:

WIRED has some great coverage:

My Adventure Teaching with Glass

As a Glass Explorer, my goal is to transform the way I teach science, making every moment a teachable moment. With the help of +CERN and +Project Glass, I've begun pursuing my goal in the most spectacular way - teaching a class of physics students from halfway around the world while touring the Large Hadron Collider. I'm so excited to share this incredible adventure with you.

Hi Everyone!

A few months ago we told you about the Mirror API. It's how you develop Glassware, which is what we're calling Glass services. We know a lot of you are eager to learn more about it, and I have some great news. Today we're releasing the API documentation and a bunch of example code, so even though the API is in a limited developer preview, you can start dreaming with us.

We look forward to hearing your feedback about this look into the Mirror API.

A few weeks ago at SXSW in Austin, TX, I gave developers a sneak peek at the Google Mirror API, which is what they'll use to build services for Glass.  With the presentation, we set out to help developers and entrepreneurs start imagining what they could do on Glass.

The Mirror API is a cloud platform that uses OAuth 2.0 and REST as an architecture for delivering a new class of experiences to people using Glass.  We walked through the basic building blocks of the API: timeline cards, menu options, share contacts, and subscriptions.  We then demonstrated some early uses of the Mirror API on Glass that were built by Evernote, The New York Times, Path, and our own Gmail team.

Developing for this type of device is a little different because you’re wearing it and it’s a very intimate experience.  So we also gave would-be Glass developers some recommended guidelines:

The results are in

A few weeks ago we revealed that we were seeking Explorers to help us shape the future of Glass. To do that, we asked people across Google+ and Twitter to tell us what they would do #ifihadglass . We could never have imagined such an enthusiastic response! There were so many creative, diverse, and (sometimes) crazy applications. We’ve certainly learned a lot through this whole process and it’s inspiring to hear how much passion there is for Glass.

Now for the really exciting bit... we know you’ve all been waiting patiently, which is why we’re pleased to announce that the results are in. Over the next few days we’ll be sending out invitations to our Explorer Program through Google+ and Twitter. So, keep a lookout for tweets and G+ posts from @projectglass and +Project Glass  to see if you’ve been invited.

We also want to call outthat we receiv... more »

If you haven't heard yet, we just launched one of the most forward-looking developer products: the Google Drive Realtime API.  This API allows your application to build realtime collaboration on Google infrastructure with essentially no overhead.  This is huge.  The ability to add operational transforms into your application in a performant way with an established data model allows you to make game-changing updates to your app.  Don't think like a chat client, think like Google Docs: multiple cursors from multiple people in the same file at the same time editing the same words!

Check out the blog post below and our documentation for more, but if there's one thing you should be doing today it's checking out this API and building a test application.

This photo comparison of two recent events in the Vatican is mindblowing:
http://photoblog.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/14/17312316-witnessing-papal-history-changes-with-digital-age

All of those people are watching the screens in front of them, instead of paying attention to the live event. Even if we feel a need to document our experiences, surely we shouldn't be giving up the experience itself?

I hope +Project Glass will provide a better way. Let's get everyone back to living their lives.

Seeking Glass Explorers: goo.gl/PbKWr

Last year we showed Glass to the world for the first time - we jumped out of airships, crashed New York Fashion Week and even took a ride on the subway. It’s been an exhilarating journey so far and there’s a lot more to come, but we can’t go it alone. We’re developing new technology that is designed to be unobtrusive and liberating, and so far we’ve only scratched the surface of the true potential of Glass.

Now we want you to get involved and that’s why today we’re expanding our Glass Explorer Program. We’re looking for bold, creative individuals who want to join us and be a part of shaping the future of Glass. Glass is still in the early stages, so we expect there will be some twists and turns along the way. While we can’t promise everything will be perfect, we can promise it will be exciting.

We’d love tomake everyone a Glas... more »

A couple weeks ago, we held two hackathons for a small group of lucky developers from among those who signed up for the Glass Explorer Program at Google I/O 2012.  We called these events the Glass Foundry.  In San Francisco and New York, the selected Glass Explorers were able to spend two days with Glass and the API we’ve developed.  They formed teams and built over 80 new ways to use Glass.  Everyone who demoed received a special edition glass bar identifying them as a “Pioneer” of this next generation of computing.  Eight hard-working teams won the grand prize: Google will pick up the cost of their Glass Explorer Edition.

The Glass Foundry was a great opportunity to get our engineers working next to developers on Glass and the API.  We discovered that we all shared a passion for the future of wearable technology, and the feedback we received is already helping us improve theplatform.  ... more »

Introducing our Developer Relations team for +Project Glass: +Timothy Jordan +Jenny Murphy +Alain Vongsouvanh +Ossama Alami

2013 is here, and that means we're getting Glass ready for developers with the Google Mirror API. It's a cloud API that uses RESTful web services, so you should feel right at home if you've already developed for YouTube, Drive, or Google+. And, you can use any programming language that you prefer. We recently shared this information in a Glass Developer Update to our Glass Explorers, who signed up to test Glass during #IO2012.

We're inviting some of the Glass Explorers to a hackathon to help us test the API and give us feedback. It's still early and so the documentation isn't publicly available yet.  But stay tuned for more updates this year. We know you're eager for information and we can't wait to see what you will build.

What is the equinox?  The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, the winter solstice is the shortest.  The fall equinox occurs midway between the two when day and night are roughly equal (12 hours each).  This happened on September 22nd.

I kinda knew all that, but this photo shows you.  It's a composite of the sun's travel across the sky on each of those days (both solstices and an equinox).  The top track is the longest day, with the most sun.  The bottom is the shortest day, and the middle is the equinox.  Cool, huh!?

Thanks Tunç Tezel of Bursa, Turkey for the cool photo!

Click this link and say goodbye to any productivity you thought you had left before lunch.

Also, I want this to be made into a video game.  Like, right away.

"It's beautiful out here.  It's so beautiful it hurts my feelings"

Really looking forward to seeing this movie.  It's so important to remember that art, just like happiness, has no rules.

Remember this video?  Perhaps a little heavy handed, but I love the slow moments and pauses--it does indeed strike a cord.

When's the last time you saw something wild, outside of a cage, and beautiful?

An airbag on your head.  This company calls it the invisible helmet--essentially a collar that can sense a bike accident and deploy an airbag to protect your noggin.  Would you wear one?

There is a tradition at +Silicon Valley Roller Girls (SVRG) games: at the end of a game, the entire audience rises from their seats and lines the edge of the track.  When the winning team is announced, the players circle the track and high five everyone (including the opposing team).  It's really cool, but rarely tense.

Last night it was full of tension as the score was so close that everyone waited on the oval for 10 minutes as the officials checked all the figures.  The un-official score became final and the 7 point difference put SVRG in motion around the track slapping hands and beaming smiles.

It was an thrilling end to a dramatic game that saw three lead changes in the first three jams and packs so tight the jammers frequently resembled divers plunging forward, trying to splash through a surface of opposing jerseys.

That is all to say, it was a very fun nightof ... more »

Hello Internet.

Every site is a circle on the map, and its size is determined by website traffic, the larger the amount of traffic, the bigger the circle. Users’ switching between websites forms links, and the stronger the link, the closer the websites tend to arrange themselves to each other.

I've often dreamt of one day taking an epic road trip steeped in natural and human history. If I were to do that today, this would be the trailer to take along.

Who is your storytelling hero?

I've often dreamed of telling stories the way Spalding Gray did.  His style was so passionate and engaging because his whole self worked as a single instrument for the story.

Now that's a big hash tag! #ZeppMe

I'm at Airship Ventures learning all sorts of really cool things about modern zeppelin flight. Its name is Eureka and it always has someone looking after it (24 hours a day). It has rear propellers that allow it to take off and land with as few as five ground crew. It has two balloons inside the big balloon...

...also it's really big and cool and flies!
