Electronic Frontier Foundation has been at 9 events

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,221,451A lot has happened on the Trans-Pacific Partnership front these past couple months. There was another major leak of a recent draft of the TPP’s Intellectual Property chapter that confirmed that many of the most extreme copyright provisions are still there, and in some cases, have even gotten worse. It also showed that it included some new harmful language on “trade secrets” that could be used to crack down on journalists. The TPP could be finalized in the coming months, and things are moving fast. That’s why we’d like to invite you to a public, online teach-in to hear representatives from several digital rights groups based in TPP countries share their analysis of the latest leaked text, as well as to lay out the current state of play of the negotiations. We’ll make sure there’s time at the end for users to ask us questions. When the time comes, we’ll need to be ready to fight this agreement on a global front. So please join us and get informed about the TPP's threats to digital rights.Fight Secret Copyright Deals: A Global TPP Teach-In2014-11-19 21:00:0070
Electronic Frontier Foundation2,221,451We're taking this day to educate people about the threats of digital rights management (DRM) and the current policy challenges we face around DRM. Join us for a live video discussion at 10:00 AM PDT / 1:00 PM EDT to learn more about these fights and join us in a conversation about what we can do to take back our rights to control the digital media and devices that we own. EFF's Intellectual Property Director, Mitch Stoltz, Staff IP Attorney, Danny O'Brien, and Global Policy Analyst, Maira Sutton, will be featured on this live discussion. To find out more, visit: https://www.eff.org/event/international-day-against-drmInternational Day Against DRM2014-05-06 19:00:0048

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,221,451We're live on Google Hangouts! Watch the digital teach-in here: http://youtu.be/yb1sYK8aGGI Submit questions via Twitter using the hashtag #404Day   On April 4th, EFF is partnering with the Center for Civic Media at MIT and the National Coalition Against Censorship to bring attention to the long-standing problem of Internet censorship in public libraries and schools for 404 Day. Join us on Friday, April 4th from 12pm-1pm PST for a digital teach-in with some of the top researchers and librarians working to analyze and push back against the use of Internet filters on library computers. Mark your calendars, and check back soon for more information about how you can tune-in. Speakers: Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Deputy Director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. Chris Peterson, a research affiliate at the Center for Civic Media at the MIT Media Lab. Sarah Houghton, Director for the San Rafael Public Library in Northern California. Moderator: April Glaser, activist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation We also invite librarians and concerned bloggers across the country to blog about Internet filtering in libraries on 404 Day to raise awareness and share stories of free speech infringing censorship in schools and libraries. Want to blog about it? Write an email to april@eff.org to let us know. About Children's Internet Protection Act & Censorship in Libraries Over 10 years ago, Congress passed the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), a bill that brought new levels of Internet censorship to libraries across the country. The law is supposed to encourage public libraries and schools to filter child pornography and obscene or “harmful to minors” images from the library’s Internet connection in exchange for continued federal funding. Unfortunately, aggressive interpretations of this law have resulted in extensive and unnecessary censorship in our cherished public libraries, often because libraries go beyond the legal requirements of CIPA when implementing content filters. As a result, students and library patrons across the country are routinely and unnecessarily blocked from accessing constitutionally protected websites.404 Day: A Day of Action Against Censorship in Libraries2014-04-04 21:00:0067
Electronic Frontier Foundation2,221,451We invite you to join us for a live Google Hangout on Tuesday October 1st at 2 PM Pacific / 5 PM Eastern to learn more about the TPP's copyright provisions and their impact on users, their effect on U.S. copyright law, and how we can work together to protect our access to knowledge, digital rights, and internet freedom. There will also be time for Q & A. Even though we successfully killed SOPA and ACTA, special interests groups continue to pour millions of lobbying dollars to push policies that would further restrict our rights to knowledge. Unable to pass such measures through our legislative process, they’re using secretive, non-democratic tactics to fold harsher copyright restrictions and enforcement measures into a larger trade agreement. The latest and biggest threat on this front is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a multinational trade agreement being negotiated between the United States and 11 other Asia-Pacific countries. Speakers: * Lori Wallach: Director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch * Krista Cox, Staff attorney at Knowledge Ecology International (KEI) * Maira Sutton, Global Policy Analyst at EFF * Parker Higgins, Activist at EFFTPP, Copyright, and Users' Rights: Google Hangout with EFF, KEI, and Public Citizen2013-10-01 23:00:00105
Electronic Frontier Foundation2,221,451It's that time of year when people start making plans for DEFCON.  If you are a woman and you've been thinking about submitting a talk, panel, or workshop, you are invited to join EFF staff members Marcia Hofmann, Eva Galperin, and Kellie Brownell on Wednesday, April 17th in our new Eddy Street.  We hope attendees will brainstorm DEFCON submission ideas, bounce ideas off each other, find out who is working on similar topics, collaborate on proposals, and join forces with other attendees to create a panel or a workshop. Join us in person at: 815 Eddy St. San Francisco, CA 94109 Or online: See above We will provide beverages, light refreshments, and plenty of help and support for submitting your presentation idea.  If you have any questions about the event, please email kellie@eff.org.EFF evening for women who want to speak at DEF CON2013-04-18 03:00:0034
Electronic Frontier Foundation2,221,451Join EFF staff technologist Dan Auerbach and other experts from the field of law and technology for a live-streamed panel discussion on the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act's (CFAA) broad reach and chilling effects. Inspired by the recent tragic death of activist Aaron Swartz, who faced intense prosecution under the CFAA, this event will explore the law's problems and the road to reform. It will be streamed live online here: https://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/events/innovation-or-exploitation Innovation or Exploitation? The Limits of Computer Trespass Law Tuesday, February 19, 2013, 7:30pm Speakers: Dan Auerbach, Electronic Frontier Foundation Ed Felten, Princeton University Jennifer Granick, Stanford University Brewster Kahle, Internet Archive Jonathan Mayer, Stanford University Alex Stamos, Artemis Internet This panel is co-hosted by Stanford's Center for Internet and Society, Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation, and Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy.Innovation or Exploitation? Electronic Frontier Foundation2,221,451On October 16, join EFF and technology users around the Internet in celebrating women in science, technology, engineering, and math. Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration that gives us an opportunity to publicize the contributions women make to technology and technology policy. Defending rights online means more than just standing up for abstract principles. It means supporting the users and developers who want to make technology better, and women play an essential role. Please join us -- it's easy! Just blog, tweet, post on G+, and tell your friends. You can write about women in technology who have inspired or influenced you, or you can write about technology issues that particularly affect women. If you're on Twitter, use the hashtag #findingada . EFF is proud to participate in Ada Lovelace Day. We'll be blogging, tweeting, and re-posting some of our favorite articles on our blog and social media accounts. We're especially interested in posts that connect civil liberties, technology, and women. If you write something, send a link to kellie@eff.org Learn more: http://findingada.com/ https://twitter.com/findingada https://twitter.com/effAda Lovelace Day2012-10-16 19:00:00142
Electronic Frontier Foundation2,221,451Happening now! Watch/participate via https://twitter.com/efflive. You can see the tweets even if you don't have a Twitter account. And if you are on Twitter, join the conversation with hashtag #Dodd. MPAA Chairman Chris Dodd's is giving a talk about "Creative Content and the Cloud" at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club -- and EFF's activism team will be on hand to cover the event through our live Twitter account,@EFFLive. We're going to provide a steady stream of humorous and thoughtful commentary throughout Dodd's speech, so please join us online or in San Francisco. Chris Dodd pushed hard to pass the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), a bill that would given content holders new tools to censor the Internet in the name of stopping "piracy."  Dodd has also said that he is "confident" negotiations for a SOPA revival are taking place. While it's tempting to write off that confidence as the result of watching one too many zombie movies, it should be no surprise that the MPAA is pushing for a new backroom deal. That's why EFF and other Internet freedom advocates are committed to fighting for an uncensored web. Follow our live coverage on Twitter @EFFLive or buy tickets to attend in person: https://doddandnewsom.eventbrite.com/ EFF Livetweets Chris Dodd's Speech in San Francisco2012-10-03 03:00:0059

Following a ruling last year by the Supreme Court, most courts have embraced efficiency in invalidating abstract patents. But the Eastern District of Texas, the country's most popular court for patent trolls, has not. A recent Kafkaesque order illustrates the costs this imposes on those fighting back against trolls.
