The Approaching Storm
I'm not sure if I like this shot but I do really like the aggressive clouds as they came closer towards me and yes it started to pour down with rain around 15 minutes after I took this shot.

First Shots With The Nikon D800
When I came home to find that my new Nikon D800 and 14-24mm had arrived I couldn't just sit there and look at the box, I wanted to get outside with it! Batteries charged I headed to the pier in Ayr which is very close to where I live and hoped I could get a couple shots. A heavy storm had just passed through so there were some dramatic and ominous clouds in air which added a bit of drama to the images.
Using the Lucroit filter holder and Hitech filters I was able to control my exposure as using filters with the 14-24mm can be quite difficult but not with this holder!
Nikon D800, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8, 1.3 seconds @ f/22, ISO 100, Hitech 0.9 Hard Edge Filter.

Lighthouse - 16 x 9 Photo Series
While out playing with some new filters yesterday I decided I wanted to do a new photo series of images that fit a style that I've never tried before. Having the ability to use a 10-Stop Hitech filter I can try different techniques by shooting very long exposures which can make for some very interesting effects.
The series will be called 16 x 9 and as you can tell by the name all the images will have an aspect ratio of 16 x 9 but they will also be in black & white with very long exposures from around 2 minutes and longer.
Here is the first shot of the series taken last night at my local harbour in Ayr, there is a small lighthouse at the end of the pier and I felt it would make sure a great image having the clouds fly by above.
Nikon D3 @ 24mm, Hitech 10-Stop Filter, 5 minute exposure @ f/22, ISO 100, -1/3 EV

Looking To Arran
A few things to announce today. I have redesigned my website by introducing a new logo and colour theme as I felt my last theme didn't work that well. I think it looks ten times better than before and I'm really pleased with it.
I've been asked to write an article for *Outdoor Photography magazine which is a huge honour and I hope I can write something that you'll all enjoy!
I'm also proud to announce that I've been sponsored by Coordinate Gear they make some amazing backpacks for photographers so you should check them out! I'll be helping test new products making sure they fit the photographers needs. I'll also be reviewing there bags so you can see them work in the field and understand the product more.
Keep an eye on here and my website for updates. www.kirknorburyphoto.com :)

Mono Rocks
As you may tell I've changed my borders slightly that I export my images with, a lot of fiddling around in Lightroom to get them to work at different pixel sizes but I've now finished (thank god!). So here's a shot from inside the Galloway Forest of one of the many Burns that run through the forest.

Black Grouse Project: Part II
Here is my second blog post on my work with the Black Grouse of the Galloway Hills. This was my best shot of the 2 days out there, the morning light lit up the blackcock and the snowy hill beautifully.

Two Little Grebes
Doonfoot, Scotland
I like having distracting elements in my photography, things that may camouflage the subject from view and make for an interesting composition. Due to overhanging branches on the bank of the River Doon these two Little Grebes were using them for cover to keep out of sight, I think this type of shot helps show the habitat that they live in.

It's 11pm and I've just finished reviewing and submitting my images for this years Wildlife Photographer Of The Year competition, this year is definitely my strongest submission yet! Fingers crossed I get into the final.
In other news I've nearly finished editing my garden bird shots I took the other week. This one is of a Blue Tit hanging on for dear life while it snowed.

Amur Leopard
New Blog Post: My girlfriend and I decided to spend Valentines Day at Edinburgh Zoo as we had been putting it off for awhile due to bad weather and we wanted to make the most out of going there. One of the main reasons we were going was to see the Giant Pandas as we never see one again and saying Rachael “really likes them” is putting it mildly! But what I didn't expect was to fall in love with one of the rarest Big Cats in the world!...

Polmaddy Burn
Galloway Forest
Purchase This Image As A Print: http://bit.ly/Y8dV28
As well as testing out the clothing for Stealth Gear I'm also reviewing there Cokin P filter system. When photographing landscapes I always try have at least one filter in front of my lens but I've never been able to use them properly as I could never afford high-quality filters. So using these filters I'm able to try new techniques that I've not done before.
This shot was taken deep in the Galloway Forest while I was trying to find somewhere to photograph the distant mountain range, the light was fading quickly and then I came across this Burn which had some really nice textures on the rocks. I used a Circular Polarizer and a ND2 filter to get a long exposure.

Nuthatch
Galloway Forest
I spent the last few days in the Galloway Forest, the weather wasn't really on my side and I didn't have much luck photographing wildlife. On one of the days it snowed all day but it didn't seem to stick anywhere except up on the hills so I used this opportunity to photograph the garden birds at my parents house.
This Nuthatch turned up for about 5 minutes before disappearing again but I was able to get a few shots of him on this fence post which was nice.

The Three Kings
Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland
With the recent success of my starscape photographs in the papers I thought I would edit a few shots taken back in December.
The moon light can have some dramatic effects on the landscape when in the right phase/position. It confuses the mind and makes you believe this shot was taken in the day-time but were actually taken at 12am.
The Three Kings or most commonly known as Orion's Belt can be seen in the top left of the image incase you were wondering about the image title.

Lonely Stag
The Highlands
My editing skills are vastly improving, looking back at images I took over a year ago I can't understand why I didn't even try to process them but at that time I probably couldn't see the potential of shots like I do now. This is very different to what I usually do but you have to love a high-key shot! :)

This week I was able to pick up my local newspaper: The Ayrshire Post and turn a few pages to find a really nice 2 page spread about me and my work. Ayrshire is an amazing area for wildlife, 70% of the images on my Facebook page taken in the last year were taken 10-30 minutes from where I live in Ayr!
Every town has its hidden gems of natural beauty, they just need to discovered, documented and shared with the world!
I'd just like to thank the Ayrshire Post for including my work in their newspaper :)

Back-Lit Whooper Swan
WWT Martin Mere, Lancashire
Today has had its ups and downs but I want to end the week on an up as overall I've had a very productive week, with new business opportunities and also a lot of work with a few photography magazines which has been great. Also, my work was published in the local paper which was really nice to see.
Have a great weekend everyone! :)

Calming Of The Senses
Doonfoot, Scotland
One of my New Year resolutions was to spend more time doing landscape photography as I felt I didn't do enough last year. So I spent 6 hours at my local beach photographing the setting sun and trying to see if I could still do it.
Gear Used: Nikon D3, Nikon 24-120mm, Light Craft Workshop Fader Filter and A Cokin Grad ND.

Star Trail Over Greenan Castle

A displaying male Goldeneye photographed on the River Doon near Ayr. I wished for better light but it never came and the water was a little choppy so at times he'd disappear behind a wave.

Red-Breasted Merganser
Ayr, Scotland
On Monday I decided to go to my local river to finish my Mute Swan family project which I had been working on for the last 9 months. The River Doon has an abundance of wildlife to offer but every time I go there is always something new to photograph.
This time I was greeted by a single male Red-Breasted Merganser, not only had I not photographed one of these before but it was also the first time I had seen one.

Red Squirrel
Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland
Lately I've been doing more business than photography, something I definitely don't want to get used to! But to progress as a professional I need to get my work out there to a larger audience due to the ever increasing competition but I enjoy the competition as it helps push my creativity further to try and stand out from the crowd.
Anyway, here's one of my Red Squirrels that I photographed just before Christmas. I'd love to go back and see these guys in the next few weeks as I really enjoyed photographing their behaviour.

Barn Owl
Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland
I recently had to go through my Barn Owl images for a client, so I re-edited a few of them and found a few images that I hadn't even touched.
This was one of the untouched shots taken in July 2011 while I was up in Scotland for a week and I focused mainly on this Barn Owl as I knew she was hunting in this field everyday and she was also successful on 90% of her hunts which was great to witness.
