American Museum of Natural History379,593There are about a million near-Earth asteroids that are large enough to substantially damage or destroy a major city. With current space technology, scientists know how to deflect the majority of hazardous near-Earth objects. But prevention is only possible if nations work together on detection and deflection. Learn about the risks and the steps that are needed to avoid these potential natural disasters from a group of astronauts and cosmonauts who recently helped develop recommendations to the United Nations for defending Earth from asteroid impact. Neil deGrasse Tyson hosts the discussion, which will be streamed live at amnh.org/live beginning at 11 am EST on October 25.  Watch here: http://bit.ly/15XV1np The discussion takes place the same week the United Nations General Assembly adopts measures creating an international decision-making mechanism for planetary asteroid defense. Participants include: Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium Thomas Jones, former NASA astronaut, senior research scientist at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, and Association of Space Explorers (ASE) Near Earth Objects Committee member Russell Schweickart, former NASA astronaut, ASE co-founder and Near Earth Objects Committee member, and co-founder and chairman emeritus of the B612 Foundation Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, former Romanian astronaut, ASE co-founder and Near Earth Objects Committee member, and vice president of the European International Institute for Risk, Security, and Communication Management Soichi Noguchi, engineer and JAXA astronaut, and ASE Near Earth Objects Committee member Edward Lu, former NASA astronaut, ASE Near Earth Objects Committee member, and co-founder, chairman, and CEO of the B612 Foundation This panel discussion is cohosted by the Museum and the ASE, the professional society of astronauts and cosmonauts.Live Stream: Defending Earth from Asteroids with Neil Tyson2013-10-25 11:00:0020

CERN293,686Join us for our sixth Hangout with CERN on Thursday 06 December at 17:00 CET, broadcast live on CERN's Google+ and YouTube pages. Previously, we have introduced you to the LHC's major experiments, given you an update on the search for the Standard Model #Higgs  boson, and discussed the wonders of #antimatter  with some of the experts who work on it at CERN. This Hangout takes us well into the past, as we delve into the very early Universe. The LHC can recreate these early-Universe conditions in the lab by colliding heavy ions together. But why do we collide these different particle species? What is in store for the heavy-ion collisions after the end-of-year break? What is this mysterious quark-gluon plasma? Experts from the LHC's heavy-ion specialist, +ALICE Experiment, will answer your questions about these and many more related topics! The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon cargo spacecraft are scheduled to lift off at 8:35 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7 from at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.  Bolden and Musk will talk about the flight, which will be the first of 12 contracted for NASA by SpaceX to resupply the space station. The SpaceX flights under the Commercial Resupply Services contract will restore an American capability to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to the orbiting laboratory -- a feat not achievable since the retirement of the space shuttle.  Followers on Twitter may ask a question in advance of or during the event using the hashtag #askNASA . On Google+, leave a comment in the thread on this event page with questions marked with #askNASA  on the morning of the event. To join the hangout, visit the NASA's Google+ page at 1 p.m. EDT on Friday, Oct. 5:  http://plus.google.com/+NASA The Dragon will be filled with about 1,000 pounds of supplies. This includes critical materials to support the 166 investigations planned for the station's Expedition 33 crew, including 63 new investigations. The Dragon will return about 734 pounds of scientific materials, including results from human research, biotechnology, materials and educational experiments, as well as about 504 pounds of space station hardware.  For information about the space station, research in low Earth orbit, NASA's commercial space programs and the future of American spaceflight, visit:  http://www.nasa.gov/exploration For more information about SpaceX, visit: http://www.spacex.comDiscuss the First Contracted Cargo Resupply Flight to the Space Station with NASA & SpaceX2012-10-05 19:00:00605

Hubble Space Telescope7,297,889A new, improved portrait of Hubble’s deepest-ever view of the universe, called the eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, looks far away and back in time to reveal faint galaxies at one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see.  This is the culmination of 10 years of observing a patch of sky that contains thousands of far-flung galaxies. The full-color XDF image shows previously unseen galaxies as they looked in the early universe, billions of years ago. Astronomers continue studying this area of sky with Hubble. Extensive ongoing observing programs, led by Harry Teplitz and Richard Ellis at the California Institute of Technology, will allow astronomers to study the deep-field galaxies with Hubble to even greater depths in ultraviolet and infrared light prior to the launch of JWST. These new results will provide even more extraordinary views of this region of the sky and will be shared with the public in the coming months.                                Want to know more? You can participate in an online webinar and hear three key astronomers of the XDF observing team describe how they assembled the landmark observation. They will illustrate and explain what Hubble’s powerful new view tells us about the evolving universe.   Viewers can send in questions for our panel of experts to discuss. The webinar will be broadcast at 1 p.m. Thursday Sept 27. Join us here for this Google Event, or watch and leave questions at the HubbleSite YouTube Channel. (http://www.youtube.com/hubblesitechannel). You can also ask your questions in advance here in comments, and we'll pass them on to our panel. The panelists will be: Garth Illingworth, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is the principal investigator of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field 2009 (HUDF09) Project.   Pascal Oesch, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a co-investigator with the HUDF09 Project.   Dan Magee, programmer/data analyst at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a co-investigator with the HUDF09 Project. Inspired by Sunday morning political TV shows.

Culture of fear (or climate of fear) is the concept that people may incite fear in the general public to achieve political goals.

Dr. Barry Glassner's 2000 book "The Culture of Fear: Why Americans are Afraid of the Wrong Things" documented meticulously that as a society, our perceptions are very often contrary or completely out of proportion to facts and the truth—from fears of air travel and razor blades in Halloween candy, to killer germs, child abductions, road rage, and crime.

OK.
So it's not really a Chinese curse.

But the times they are interesting in a  US -Russian proxy war in the middle east with S.A. & Iran with Syria, Iraq, Yemen etc. in play plus Asian markets collapsing which is has a domino effect on western markets, plus stirrings of a 21st century US civil war between useful idiots of the one percent vs everybody else.

Since we're only 452 days away from the 20th anniversary of one my favorite movies HEAT, I set it to one of the soundtrack songs, an incredible piece of music by Elliot Goldenthal. The cityscapes of HEAT inspired me to make movies long ago, so it was a special treat looking down on LA from some similar angles to the classic Michael Mann film. I finished the edit with a few city captures from previous shoots and here's the result! Motion control shots DynamicPerception.com Stage Zero and others using 5K QT Panning.

Journalism: The oldest profession?

"  There is no excusing this behavior. A newspaper editor cannot be allowed to stamp on the most basic rules of journalism and pay no price. He should be shunned by my colleagues, cut off by professional organizations and told to pound sand by anyone working for him who has integrity.  "

I'm not sure I'd call this 'good' news but , as usual, the Republicans are just talking shit.

"  Exaggerated prognostications by Republicans that this small Russian force of just 4,000 troops is supplanting 70 years of American dominance in the Arab and wider Islamic world are what the Russians call dezinformatsiia (disinformation) and agitprop (agitation-propaganda).   "

"  What better for corporate news. You pretend there isn’t a candidate in the race addressing growing economic inequality or the woes of the working class. You put all the spotlight on someone who insults and even incites against Mexican-Americans, African-Americans and Muslim-Americans. It is a tried and true tactic of the American business class to keep the workers and middle class divided by playing up minor ethnic issues.  "

Snacking
In response to +Paul Howard 's post ( https://plus.google.com/u/0/+PaulHoward/posts/cPnZzQXX5Uu ) about friendly Chipmunks especially if there's food involved. I assumed someone else in the neighborhood had already habituated this little Guy (Gal?) but maybe chippies are just really friendly and laid back, especially for a free meal.
