There is no doubt that Death Valley National Park is one of my favorite locations in the lower 48 states. With such varied terrain and geologic formations, it truly is a photographers paradise.

This image was taken a few miles into the Mesquite Sand Dunes early one morning with +David Plowchalk. The soft light of the sun brought a pleasant warm look to the rows of sand waves cascading up this dune.

The Greatest Face I've Ever Seen

I was walking slowly, casually, my camera in my left hand down at my waist.  My eyes moved back and forth, scanning the faces in the crowd.  Searching for an exciting subject.  Someone interesting, or beautiful, or full of character.. Someone.. the opposite of boring. 

And then I stopped.  

I smiled.  

And I may have actually whispered out loud, "that is the greatest face I've ever seen".

Too good to be real.  But he is.

Here's a tip maybe even a couple- get 100% comfortable with using your DSLR in Aperture Priority, master manual focus, then get yourself a film SLR and single 35mm prime, ideally at least f/2. Shoot B&W prints, learn to 'see' a subject in B&W. You'll learn more from that experence than from the same time spent on your DSLR.

I've just spent the afternoon telling students at a workshop how they should make the special effort to GET UP EARLY or STAY UP LATE for the light... here's an example that may or may not support that - a summer, mediterranean shot taken at midday. I often wonder what the colour and light might have been like an hour before sunset. Or at dawn. But I was here and the horses were there at midday. And sometimes that's all the choice you get.

Pope Paolo - Paolo is the caretaker of the Friari Church in Venice. Here he is feeling a little guilty about posing in papal pose on one of the church's olive wood altar thrones. I took his confession straight afterwards, he seemed happier. Leica R4s + Vario Elmar 28-70mm; Fuji Provia 100.
