P&G Lays Off Over 6K and Increases Ad Budget
Bottom line: Don't build your strategy around 3rd parties (like Facebook). That's an outpost. Build around OWNED media, then use outposts to spread valuable content and start conversations.

Lack of Sleep in the Workplace Has the Same Effects as Being Drunk
Harvard Business Review argues today that a giant movement needs to take place - and fast. We talk a lot about nutrition and exercise, but sleep deserves to be a third pillar that's just as important and relevant to our lives.
Eye-opening: the chart (previewed in the snippet) which reveals your workplace effectiveness - or lack thereof - when you're deprived of sleep as compared to when you're drunk.
In short: my decisions made after a scotch or 3 = my decisions made after a terrible night's sleep or 3.

John Cleese's video on making your life more creative continues to inspire
Around 3:30, he rails against what we all believe to be productivity (checking things off a list; tackling trivial things that are urgent). This video and subsequent breakdown by +Brain Pickings resonates simply because John Cleese keeps it so simple. His approach is so obvious that it's nearly impossible for us to adopt this, because we all stray SO far from simplicity in our daily work lives.
LOVE this video!

How Marketing Legend Guy Kawasaki Manages His Social Presence
Thrilled to have +Guy Kawasaki guest post on the +HubSpot blog today.
What's awesome about this post is the exact playbook Guy uses to be prolific each and every day. Another major takeaway: nobody every replies to comments except Guy through his accounts, which isn't always the case for really busy people with tons of reach.

Why I'm Joining +HubSpot's Content Team
This blog post talks a lot about fear, but it’s really about opportunity, hunger, and career path. I’ll explain…
As a writer, few things in this world rattle you to the bone worse than a blank screen, cursor blinking at you, mocking your paralysis. I’ve set out personally and professionally to obliterate this fear in my writing, a desire borne out of a love for quality content and improving people’s lives through creation. But regardless, this post almost had me. The need to meticulously convey exactly why I’m joining HubSpot drove me to draft paragraph after paragraph, delete the first one, rework the second, start all over, and scrap it all in the end…only to start again.
But here we are: I’m joining HubSpot, and I couldn’t be more excited to be their Content Team Manager.
I’ve been incredibly lucky ear... more »

Content Creators! Question about building a better content ecosystem online...
I have a relevant if random question for you. I'm doing some light market research involving bloggers and digital content creators, specifically those who create for fun or on the side (not as their core jobs).
I'm looking to send out a 60-second survey sometime in the next week or two and am compiling a list of creators. Two things:
1. Would it be okay if I emailed this survey to you?
2. Are there others you'd recommend that'd be interested in helping out? Looking specifically those who create content in a quality way (i.e. they aren't your typical BuzzFeed list-builders).
Let me know. Thanks!
PS: The grand reveal...
The reason I'm doing this is for me personally - no other company - to survey the... more »

The Content Spectrum, Stage 3: Distribution - How to USE Content You've Created
In an earlier post (http://goo.gl/j7GYF), I introduced the Content Spectrum: four simple phases in your content operations that can help you make sense of the loose, frightening project of owning “content” for your business. Its goals are simple: be efficient, be thoughtful, and keep your and your company’s goals in mind the entire time.
Details on the first two steps, Planning and Production, can be found in separate posts here (http://goo.gl/9fKKC) and here (http://goo.gl/Dpqwg), respectively.
In this post, I’m introducing the basics of Distribution, which is an enormous topic (you can basically call it marketing). Therefore, I’ll tee up just a few of the must-know concepts that I’ve seen firsthand, and I encourage you to explore other marketing- and content-focused blogs for mo... more »

Dumb Ways to Die - an EXCELLENT Example of Content Marketing
There's "content marketing" (blogging and writing a lot of crap for SEO purposes), then there's this: actual, awesome, shareable, lovable content created by and for a brand.
Here's the premise of why this works and scales as a strategy: start with purely consumer-focused ideas that they'd be interested in, and find ways to make your brand a part of that ecosystem. Don't lead with product and sell-sell-sell.
Give it a story, make it affect your consumer in a positive, emotional way, and you'll inevitably win them over.
PLUS...this is awesome ;)

A Simple, Efficient Way to Think About Content at Your Company
Originally written for Boston Content, a community for content industry pros. www.BosContent.com
Congratulations: your company (and you, of course) officially “get” the need to create online content regularly. Your management team understands that businesses today are faced with a real opportunity to lead the conversation about their industry, products, brands and customers. They can be thought leaders, entertainment outlets, and media channels that add value to their target audiences - all by creating and distributing digital content.
Your business gets all that. So, um…what now?
How, exactly, is a company supposed to handle its content operations? Grasping the idea of generating online content is one thing; successfully executing is entirely another matter.

A human point and a statistical point re: gun control, so we can all (Republicans, Dems, moderates, WHOEVER) think before we speak.
Disclaimer: I'm providing some thought-starters. I don't really care to argue with you 2 days after my home state and the US was left shocked and mourning. Be mature, be sensitive, be human.
1. LANGUAGE
Media members write this way to be objective as reporters (and they should):
"9,000 were killed by guns last year in the US" (actual stat).
It's not hard for even the most sensitive and empathetic person to separate their thoughts and feelings from that statement, right?
Nine-thousand is a number. It's a stat. It's 9,000 THINGS...those things are void of distinct meaning in our brains. That's what words do - they put thoughts, pictures, and narratives in our ... more »

Clayton For Google BOLD :)
After applying for and attending Google's AdCamp last June, I have set my sights on the Google BOLD Internship Program for this summer. On December 1st, I successfully submitted my application for the program with the below resume (http://goo.gl/BFXN3). I know I have what it takes to be successful at Google, and I hope that I am able to show that this summer.
The BOLD Internship Program (http://goo.gl/Fks4M) is an 11-week internship in a non-technical role. For me, this role would most likely be in Advertising Sales and User Operations, Marketing, or Communications. BOLD will be a great way to challenge myself and expand my knowledge through my work as well as through workshops, seminars, mentors, and speakers.
Please, feel free to review and share my resume to show your support for me.
Tip: The resolution is better if you... more »

Is Creativity the Most Overlooked Requirement in Content Creation?
(Originally posted to Boston Content - the Boston-area industry resource group and community for content creation professionals. www.boscontent.com )
“No one wants to admit it, but sometimes a baby is ugly.”
This was one of the greatest quotes from an Adweek panel held earlier this year. The point being made was that, as brands evolve into media shops and create content regularly, it’s important to recognize that - maybe, just maybe - branded content flops for a very simple reason: it was bad content. There’s no deep analysis or lofty marketing buzzword needed here. Sometimes the answer is simple: the content created by a company (and really, that means a person or people at the company) just lacked creativity and wasn’t good enough to matter to consumers. And if so many overlook that simple fact and try t... more »
