Foggy morning sunrise on Signal Mountain, over the Snake River, and located within the Grand Teton National Park. Dead ghostly trees along the shoreline near and far.

Grose Ventre Ranch Sunset

Fall colors near the Grand Teton National Park. A horse grazing during the sunset while the suns rays shine on the trees warm foliage. I'm perched high on a hill, sittin', enjoying a million dollar view.

Processed to the Cowboy Junkies - Horse in the Country, and the rest of the black eyed man album...

First photo I've processed on my new super computer. I had to wear seat belt. ( I always wear a helmet, ;)   )

Golden leaves on the forest floor

Hiking around String Lake in Grand Teton NP there were many golden leaves littering the forest floor. This is a hand held shot with a Nikon D800E at f/4 200mm.

The Green Pool

A long single exposure, 15 minutes or so. A beautiful coast line located in Door County, Wisconsin. Lake Michigan had some rough surf which created a blurry refraction in the pool below. Nailing the exposure is key. The closest shelf is 10" from the camera, with the surf below a few feet away. What I like about this image is the sense of multi-dimensions from a 2d image. The soft pastel sky, icing on the cake, well, I hope it is for you as well... if you really want to get cheesy, google "Still Life" lyrics by Iron Maiden...

Crystal Creek Cascades

I could post a long winded story with feelings, creative vision, desires, intentions, and complete recipe on how to execute your dreams and passion into imagery like this... but, it's best said personally over a glass of single malt 15 year scotch, the passion gets lost in cyber... and ultimately, the best images are created when the photographer takes a position of "nobody really cares", I'm not saying that, but there might be some truth to that...

I don't post much of people photography but... a couple of great kids, a tree swing, green fourth of July grass, in rural Indiana. I think it's about as #americana as it gets ya'll.

Pewit's Nest #1

Floating autumn leaves and reflection of trees in the water. Hidden amongst the farm and prairie fields of Central Wisconsin is a bit of a peculiar anomaly. There lies a 40’ deep natural gorge that looks as though it belongs in the Pacific Northwest. Steep mossy sides with slow moving pools littered with fall foliage. The currents create rhythmic eddy’s within the scenic canyon. A fall day such as this brings an amazing palette of colors below the warm canopy. Baraboo, Wisconsin

Icy Sunset On Wisconsin River by Matt Anderson

Cold temperatures, icy shoreline, flowing river, and amazing colors by a sunset on a rural location of the Wisconsin river between Mazomanie Popular Nude Beach and Sauk City. I kept the warm magenta cast which, may or may not suit your tastes. Six images (Dynamic Range) x 2 (top bottom pano stitch with slight crop) for 12 images. D800E @ 14mm. This file was one of the toughest images to compress for web size to date. While I was shooting, the ice completely cracked under me. It shot out like a bullet horizontally cracking a good 100 yards up and down the shoreline at equal distance. Within minutes the whole shelf sank a couple of inches. Pretty freaky to have happen, was very cool. I couldn't believe the speed the tension created traveling so fast across the icy shelf. The old timer secret is to keep some 50 penny nails in your pocket. So... more »

Winter Tree #10

A lone tree blanketed in fog and surrounded by a forests edge on both sides. Taken yesterday afternoon, the warm temperatures and snow melt have brought about some dense fog. We're lucky to get one or two days in a season with these wonderful conditions and decent snow covering the landscape. I passed this rural tree only a couple of weeks ago, and remembered it would be a perfect spot if the conditions were right.

Blustered (It's a word)

Some of the best, I mean nastiest conditions, I've shot in (period)
Sensational blizzard with substantial winds.
The frustrating part was keeping snow off the lens. (and keeping still)

Nikon D800E
70-200mm f/2.8 AFS VRII

Winter Tree Notes:
For you photographers, simply don't clip the highlights, but toe the line of overexposure very close. In post processing open the 1/4 tones, deepen the darkest shadows for contrast, and pick a WB that is slightly warmer than neutral. If you open up the lens for more light, the snow fall will blur the details in front and behind the tree, creating a blur separation of bokeh, isolating the plane of intent. Oh, and hold still, and enjoy the discomfort, it's worth it... ;)

Monet's Giverny by Matt Anderson, & Happy New Year!!!

A field of fall colors, wild flowers, and colorful shrubs within the Grand Teton National Park. I was videoing a moose in very low light. This was a quick still grab. Incorrect camera settings, lack of a steady hand, and wrong exposure yielded this resulting image. Although, what is wrong and incorrect in photography anyway ? I thought this image looked a lot like #monet garden paintings at Giverny.

*I did clone out a cow moose. I found the photo much more compelling without the blurry moose I was previously videoing.

"Burning Bush"

While Hiking thru the amazing Waimea Canyon, on the Island of Kauai, I was treated to this incredible site. The light was sweeping across this tree in a catch-light ghosting manner. What great light to stumble upon! The incline for which I set up the tripod was quite dangerous (to me). Just behind the tree was a 1500' shear drop. One of the more nerve racking shots I've ever taken, as the camera and I slowly slid towards the ledge. The sun was at a point in the sky where the shear cliffs behind the tree were in shadow, isolating the plateau area where I stood. The hi-res file has such amazing fine details. The print file is 1.4 Gigabytes.

*Some technical processing notes:
The tree is lit with a reflective orange clay in the foreground. The background is a lush green mountain side shaded by the sun. I shot with a Hasselblad H3D-39 with a strong red... more »

Ox Bow Bend during the peak of Fall colors. Located in the Grand Teton National Park on the Snake River. I was lucky enough to get a vantage point that isn't very common ;) . A kind tourist let me climb up top his rather mammoth RV and re-position it for the perfect view. Our teamwork framed the mountains betwixt the near foreground sage brush along the shoreline and the far grove of aspens for an exemplary (I hope) layering of warm and cool elements. I stayed in a cabin near mormon row (popular barns) for days. It wasn't until the fourth day when the smoke from the many fires in the area finally dissipated, and the obscured pinnacles of wonder appeared. What a site to behold! Truly breathtaking in to behold in person.

I take a handful of wildlife images throughout the year. I never post them because most are done by much better - seasoned artisans in this particular subject matter. A few images have stood out in my own personal culling this past year, and, I figured, what the hell... Maybe someone else might like the imagery. Geese are easy subjects in my particular locale, I'm guessing everywhere ;) . But, fleeting light, snow blown trees, and a reflective backdrop, all together, I hope, create an X-factor that might pose as interesting in the flood of images that is created each and every second of every day in an ever increasing pool of imagery - created by an exponentially growing mass of photographic artists.

To skip the long winded bull $hit forgo the next paragraph...

I took the long way home along the local rural river this evening. I was treated to a beautiful glow of last light along... more »

Winter Tree #6

This weekend we had our first substantial snowfall of the year. A gnarly twisted oak obscured in a snowy cloak. Cold and Dark, the Wisconsin Rivers rapid flow creates isolated eddies along the shoreline edge. The golden riven bed sand striated in rippled patterns contrasting the elliptical orbits above. Don't go digging in the riverbed below....

Beaver Moon on the Rock River

Full Beaver Moon – November This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon. This is located on the Rock River near Fulton, Wisconsin.

Taken with a Nikon D800E with a 50mm f/1.4 G lens. I tried using my 24mm, but the framing was to vast and the moon, too small. The 85mm to tight. 70-200mm to easy, I prefer to shoot with prime lenses whenever possible. No that prime lenses, as of late, are any better, but typically less obtrusive, more deliberate, and somehow more romantic in use, IMHO. I love the 50mm 1.4 G. It's my walk around lens. Always has been with both Canon and Nikon systems. Kinda like the 80mm on aH... more »

Photo Editing 101:  how to edit a big batch of photos and survive the tidal wave of data (+ avoid the headaches):  http://bit.ly/TV0YcF

Here's a primer on using the star method...

1* – Pace: Full Speed.  Main Criteria: Is it garbage? Before you even think about starting your first pass through your shoot, do yourself a favor: let the software build all of it’s previews and caches.  I know it can be hard to wait for this process, you feel like you’re wasting time, but trust me, it’s worth the wait.  Why?  Because the first pass through your big shoot should fast.  I mean FAST.

You’re not trying to pick the winners, you’re not even trying to pick the contenders.  Here’s a metaphor for you.  They let 20,000 people qualify for the Boston Marathon.  All you have to do in this first pass is pick the people who definitely won’t finish.  The guy inthe Santa suit, the lady dr... more »

Les Trois Tempêtes (The Three Tempests) by Matt Anderson

An intense storm rushed over the Grand Teton Range: "les Trois Tétons" (the three breasts) by early French Explorers. No really, Wikipedia said so!

Shining through the dissipating storm clouds emerged, God beams bathing the range in glorious light.

Ox Bow View by Matt Anderson

Camera Porn. Nikon #D800E with a 14-24mm Wide Angle Lens with a #Lucroit Filter Holder System Mounted on a #RRS #PCL-1 #BH-55. This is the setup for nearly all my wide angle imagery. I'm posting this because sometimes it's interesting to see the setup others are using. I use a wide-thick leather wrist strap, I don't like the long neck strap. If it's possible to use a filter to control DR (when multiple exposures are necessary without) I try to use. Less computer time compositing is nice.

Yours truly ( I'm on left, with some friends) at #Yellowstone Upper / Lower Falls viewing platform, after descending 1 million steep steps to this vantage. My 40lb #fstop #tilopa backpack was quite burdensome on the race back up. We spent the day casually touring the parks icons. By the way, love that backpack!

Weird thing is, we ran so hard back up the enormous grade, a few of us could taste blood on our palette.

Fall leaves have changed their color
Winter's on its way
I hear the wicked cold winds call me
They say, don't fly away
Drink the warm wines, Feel the heat from a fire's blaze
You take a long walk in those lonely Winter days
Winter's cold winds call me
Gonna leave it all behind
Drink the warm wines, Feel the heat from a fire's blaze
Gonna leave it all behind

Maple leaves during a rain shower in late fall located by Matt Anderson. Beautiful red and orange maple leaves sprinkled with rain drops during a drizzle in Wisconsin. I got soaked photographing so many potential compositions. When you're under the canopy with such decorative and colorful shapes, you kinda get lost, almost hypnotized by natures magnificent beauty.

Pewits Nest #4

Fallen leaves littering the floor of this Midwest glen. The unpretentious stream cascades down carrying away the seasonal adornments.

Wow, that last description sounded like a stoned Bob Ross (google it, you'll love what you find)
