"Thomas Moulton Barn - Clarity test"
© Jeff R. Clow
The good folks at Topaz Labs asked me to test a pre-release version of Topaz Clarity - the latest plug in their lineup. This is the result - my original shot from the Moulton barn in Jackson Hole, Wyoming....processed solely with Topaz Clarity as a plug in for Photoshop CS6.
It works really well. The nuances of color and light just POP from the monitor as you begin to utilize the multitude of sliders within the Clarity program. And even more impressive is the fact that the plug in doesn't produce any halos or artifacts in the finished result. In the past, other programs did and that was their downfall. Topaz Labs has figured out how to overcome that hurdle.
Clarity is being released later this week and you can download a free trial at the Topaz Labs website. From my perspective, it is a breakthrough plug ... more »

Shadows in the Valley

This scene stopped me in my tracks during a recent visit to the Professor Valley near Moab, Utah....the sun and clouds above were casting their light and shadows across the landscape and creating a virtual palette of color on the rocks and the mountains.

Underwater Smile

Underwater shooting is unpredictable.....the air bubbles, the light, the lens flare. But my granddaughter was a real trooper and we finally were able to get a fun shot of her underwater.

Sunset Glow

Along the Potash Road just a few miles west of Moab, Utah. I took a group of fellow photographers here and they were all looking for an open shot of the reflected view.....while I personally liked the branches in the foreground. I thought they framed the scene nicely.
Would you have used the branches .... or avoided them?

The Towering Figure in my Life
© Jeff R. Clow
Thank goodness that I had - and still have - a towering figure in my life that served as the quintessential role model for me. I salute her - and mothers everywhere - today.
Here's something I wrote about her a few years ago that still rings so true to this very second:
As I have aged, I have become more acutely aware of the impact my Mother has had on my development as a man. Simply said - I am the man I am today because of her.
Strong statement, huh? Surely a man is a combination of a lot of inputs over the course of his life. School, friends, events, successes and failures all create the man - don't they?
The simple fact in my case is that the foundation my Mother built below me during my formative years has supported everything that was later erected upon that firm ground. And I ... more »

Incredible sights like this on both sides of the road. If you look closely, you can see a very small car in the distance .... this will give you some idea of how big these mountains are in real life.

100 Anniversary Celebration Auction - the Thomas A. Moulton barn in Jackson Hole Wyoming
I am very pleased to be part of the Centennial Celebration of this iconic barn that has come to symbolize the Old West. The Moulton family is gathering in Grand Teton National Park this July to celebrate the barn's 100th birthday and to lead continuing efforts with the Park Service to keep the barn restored for the next hundred years.
A print of the photo you see here - "Morning at Moulton Barn" by yours truly - will be auctioned off by the organizers during the celebration to raise additional funds for the restoration efforts. If you'd like to be involved with this historic event, more information can be found at:

Nesting Tri-Colored Herons
© Jeff R. Clow
One of the interesting things about a rookery is that wild birds will congregate at some unusual places....and even more remarkable that they choose a small wooded area on the University of Texas SW Medical Center campus near downtown Dallas.
Here is a pair of nesting tri-colored herons. At this wooded rookery, they are the rare exception to the hundreds of great white egret and snowy egret nests spread over a relatively small area and surrounded by tall buildings on all sides.
If you are near the DFW Metroplex, it sure is worth a drive to see. As of this morning, I saw anhingas, cattle egrets, snowy egrets and great white egrets along with black crown night heron and these tri-colors. All in a setting where you can walk around the edge and get a real taste of life in "bird city".
(The rookery is fr... more »

The Rockpile View
© Jeff R. Clow
One of the things I hope you all are doing is keeping your old files and revisiting them when you acquire new processing software.
This is a blended three frame shot from atop the Rockpile in Banff National Park. It shows the magical blue waters of Morraine Lake that are colored by the glacial silt.
When I first took these frames a couple of years ago, I didn't have the same processing ability that I now have and I was astonished to see how the newer software rendered the scene to an image much more closer aligned with what I remember seeing through the viewfinder....

Clear Canadian Lake
© Jeff R. Clow
This is Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park - less well known that some of the other stellar lakes in the Lake Louise area - but an incredible place to visit.
And yes, the water is really as amazingly clear as you can see here. And it has a true emerald hue due to glacial silt...
I'm going back in September with my friend +Hans Wobbe to lead a photo tour to some great spots in the Canadian Rockies ..... drop me a note if you'd like to join us.

One of my favorite spots during our recently completed Dirt Cheap Photo Tour of the area around Moab, Utah is the Professor Valley....which looks very similar to Monument Valley in Arizona. There is a reason over 50 Western films were shot in this area - it certainly has the rugged appeal of the Old West.
