The Needle

I've previously posted this image in black and white but do to a recent inquiry revisited the color version and thought it was worth a share.  This is a composite image of Seattle's Space Needle as seen from +Nicole S. Young's former Seattle apartment set against a comped in sky from my front yard that I blurred in Photoshop.  I used +onOne Software's Perfect Mask to pull the Space Needle from the original sky and Layers to blend the two images.

All of the Panthers Gathered

I'm so stoked about the new vertical photo enhancement here on G+ I thought I'd share another image from Panther Creek.  From the creek bed you can't see all these falls together so I figured I'd take a little climb up the hillside.  I was pleasantly surprised with the view and here it is.

It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.
- Alan Cohen

Be courageous my friends! Don't whine, embrace the change.

Panther's Milk

The overall view of Panther Creek Falls is awesome.  And I mean that in the "full of awe" way, not the popular 80's slang that still hangs around today.  When you stand on the overlook and take your first glimpse at the expanse of the falls you are taken in by its beauty and grandeur. Saturday morning I spent a lot of time trying to get an over all view of the multi-tiered falls that I was happy with and I think I got the shot which I'll share another time as it's a story to itself.

This shot was taken at the end of the morning as +David Staggs and I were standing around talking about photography.  I was fighting the mist on my filter and was a bit tired so I decided to step back a ways and do a couple shots with a longer lens to capture some of the detail in the falls.  When I looked at this shout I couldn't help but seemilk.... more »

Lower Panther

Yesterday morning I met up with +David Staggs at Panther Creek Falls for a morning shoot.  David contacted me earlier in the week asking for some tips about shooting the area. He is from Colorado and was coming to town for the weekend to do some shooting.  What kind of host would I be if I didn't join him? So I did.  The whole week we had cloudless skies, but this morning we were fortunate enough to have a light cloud layer that provided for some nice even light.

This shot is of the lower portion of the falls, you can see the main falls in the background in the upper left.  Getting down to shoot this is not for the faint of heart as there isn't much of a trail and the ground isn't always as stable as it appears and the whole thing starts with a climb down a short cliff face.  But the journey is totally worth it as the view is outstanding.

Photawesomeness!

My favorite thing about Google+ is all the rad people I've got the chance to meet and call friends.  One in particular has been +Nicole S. Young!  She is an amazing friend and one of the best photographers I've had the pleasure of shooting with.  I'm super sad she's leaving the Portland area but am glad to have got to know her over the past year or so.  Last year I had the distinct pleasure of performing her and +Brian Matiash's marriage ceremony here at a local restaurant.  They both have been the best of friends and although there will be some distance between us I'm sure that our friendship will remain.

Here's a shot of Nicole from this past weekend during our shoot up near Rowena, OR in the Columbia River Gorge.

One thing that Nicole brings to the table, besides her amazing photography, is her breadth of knowledgeshe ... more »

My Mom

#HeresToTheMoms

All my life my mom has been my biggest fan.  Nobody has encouraged me in my art and photography like my mom.  As a child I remember seeing all of my drawings, paintings, and pictures hanging on the cabinets of our kitchen and hearing my mom tell everyone who would listen who created them.  I never thought much of it at the time but as I look back I can hear the pride in her voice as she spoke about me to her friends.  I still don’t think I’m as good as she says but I do love the encouragement she gives.

I am one of six kids and have always had a special relationship with my mom.  As a kid I suffered from severe allergies, eczema and asthma and was at the doctor almost as much as I wasn’t.  My mom was always there to take care of me and to make sure that I had the best care available.  And because of this my siblings tease thatI was always m... more »

An Old Tired Bathroom

I'm finally home after a week of travel and I feel like this old worn down bathroom.  I love to travel and see new places and meet new people but it sure does take its toll on this old man.  The bummer is that this morning I had to drive my wife to the airport for her trip this  week.  I look forward to things getting back to normal soon.

Points to the Sky

Today I'll be wrapping my time up in Florida and will be driving to Georgia later today.  I've had a great time and got to see +Cameron Siguenza again and meet +Gilmar Smith and +Mike Blank in person.  I know Gilmar is sad that she didn't get to see me rock Sublime's Santeria on stage at the karaoke place but maybe next time.

So why did I post a photo of Zabriskie Point in Death Valley while I'm in Florida?  Well, it's because the one geological fact of Florida that has struck me thus far is its utter flatness, I think the highest hill I've driven over was five feet high.  Although it's flat, I will say the stark weather changes each day have been interesting.  My first day here the rains welcomed me as I dragged my bags into the hotel.  I was soaking wet in mere seconds.  And as an Oregonian, to say that the rainhere is impr... more »

Lagos' Lodge

This is a shot of +Ricardo Lagos from our trip to Death Valley this past winter. Ricardo was kind enough to put his camera down for a few seconds and peek out from this shack for a couple shots.  In honor of him I put this into B/W which I think highlights the textures of the shack and landscapes well.

This shack sits at an abandoned mine at the end of a road that truly tested our rental car.  We made it most of the way before having to hoof it the rest.  It's fun to get out and explore some of these lesser known places and to wonder what life was like for those that worked here.

Behind the Falls

I was going through my LR catalog tonight and found an avi file from a recent shoot in the Columbia River Gorge at Ponytail Falls.  I don't remember taking this and may not have taken it intentionally.  But, it's kind of a fun little clip.  You can see and hear what it sounds like standing in the cavern behind the falls.

Painting Tulips

When your the first one at the tulip field in the morning what do you do?  Well, all my experience so far tells me that you light paint.  So this morning, day 2 of shooting with +Nicole S. Young at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm,  I was again the first one there so I pulled out the flashlight and started to play.  You can see that during this shot a couple other people arrived and drove straight through my shot.  As much as I wish it was, that isn't a laser fence, it's the tail lights of the new arrivals.

In this image I blended in a shot of the sky, from a few minutes after the light painting, with the light painted shot of the tulips and tractor using Perfect Mask and added some color to the sky using Perfect Effects from +onOne Software's Perfect Suite 7.  The final touches were done in LR4.

Shhh... Let's Have Some Quiet Time

Last night I was sitting at the computer just goofing off, I had some music playing, and my wife turned to me and asked "do you always have some kind of noise on?"

Ouch!

For the most part, yes I do.  I sit at my desk at work and have talk radio or music playing.  The radio is always on in my car.  Music plays as I edit photos.  The only time that I don't have "noise" is when I'm out shooting and I guess while I'm sleeping.  Maybe it's something I need to change.  Maybe some silence would do me good.  But then again, if it's quiet I have to live in my own head and that is a scary place.

This is from one of my quiet places.  This is the trail that leads to Ponytail Falls in the Columbia River Gorge.  I'd really like to spend more time here, exploring,shooting,... more »

Ponytail Falls

A fresh haircut is refreshing, I just got mine done at Sport Clips where I ordered up the MVP 'cause it makes me feel special.  You get the cut, wash, scalp massage and hot towels.  Cropping a picture is like giving the shot a haircut.  You trim here and there to get just what you want.

This image the way I shot it was okay but it needed a bit of a trim.  I normally don't have a hard time with cropping but this shot had some cowlicks that were a bugger to trim around.  In the end I decided that some of the cowlicks just had to stay and be part of the shot because if I got rid of them I would have had to cut some of the locks that make me love this scene.

Recreating Twiggy - Not my photo.

This is a proud dad moment.  My daughter it taking photography classes at her high school and her current assignment is to do portraits.  She decided that she would recreate some classic portraits as part of this assignment.  One of those she recreated was a classic picture of the model Twiggy. She did it as a selfy.  I posted a behind the scenes on Instagram the night I was helping her with it and some people asked to see the final product so here it is.  She used my old Canon point and shoot camera that triggered a Nikon flash in a soft box to her right which was triggered by the on camera flash.  There was a work lamp set up behind her to the left which lit the backdrop.

At 15 she's doing some really fun and creative work - I see great things in her future.

Ponytail Falls

Ever wonder what the backside of a falls looks like?  Then go to Ponytail Falls above Horsetail Falls in the Columbia River Gorge and see for yourself.  You can walk under the cliff that this falls flows over and get the full view of it's backside.  This is the trail that +Karen Hutton, +Joe Dolister, +Nicole S. Young, Kodak and I walked yesterday to see this waterfall.  It was a great day of food, fun, fellowship and photography.

Curves and Crags

The light of morning does the desert wonders.  If the desert was a woman it may have mixed feelings about the morning light.  On one hand the morning light does a wondrous job of accentuating its lovely curves, but on the other hand its angled light also brings out its ripples, crags and unsightly hairs in all their glory.

Happy Friday everybody ;-)

There's a pilot out there who may never know he graffiti'd the sky during my shot.  I almost cloned it out but decided to leave it because, well, it was there.  On Friday my son and I left my wife and daughter behind to knit and read while we watched the sunset at Haystack Rock.  Okay, he didn't watch it, he ran around the beach looking for a place to pee play while I shot pictures.  I'm thankful that my family is patient with me and this photography thing, they are the best!

When Alex and I got to this spot it was swarming with people and lots of other photographers.  The tide was low so you could walk out to the rock and explore the tide pools which were teaming with starfish.  All the while thousands of seabirds were feasting on the rocks.  So I pulled out my ND filters and set the tripod (yes, I remembered my tripod shoe) for some longexposu... more »

Trillium

I don't do much in the way of flower photography but since it's the beginning of Spring and April 1st I figured I'd put one up.  Also, I don't have any baseball shots to share, so this is what you get. I did, however, in honor of the Angels first game today, change my profile picture back to me in my Angel jersey ;-)  *Go Angels!*  Top of the 8th and they're tied with the Reds - in case you weren't paying attention.

Happy Easter

I hope you and yours are having a beautiful day.  I chose to make this a quiet day of reflection, house cleaning and of course processing.  I have a bit of a backlog of images to go through and spent some time today looking through them.  This is one from a few mornings ago when I got up early and headed downtown to capture the sunrise.  Much to my dismay I forgot my tripod shoe (which only came off the camera for some cleaning) and ended up having to hand hold all morning.  So the long exposures I had planned on doing were out and bracketed shots where in.  Thankfully there were some convenient concrete blocks and light posts available.  Nothing like improvising on the fly, right?

This is a seven exposure HDR shot processed in Photomatix Pro and touched up in LR4.  I just purchased Photomatix after using Photoshop's built in HDR Pro for the past year ortwo.  I... more »

Good Morning Portland

It looks like it might be a beautiful sunrise today downtown Portland. I may or may not capture it. As thorough as I typically am with bringing everything I need for a shoot I sometimes blunder. Today is one of those days. I have my camera, my lenses, and my tripod, but what I don't have is the shoe that connects my camera to the tripod. UHG! Time to improvise.

+Brian Matiash. Meet Google.

Ever since its launch, +Google+ has always been my favorite place to share imagery and to be inspired by the creativity of this community. It truly is a wondrous place for photographers to learn, grow, and network. That’s why I’m so excited to announce that I have joined the Google+ team as Community Manager for Google+ Photos.

You see, while photography is the thread that weaves through everything I’m made up of, it is the social aspect of sharing, teaching, and inspiring that fuels everything I do. My aim is to help show the world why Google+ and its community of photographers and photography lovers are some of the best on the Internet, throughout the world.

I now have the opportunity to inspire creativity and community within this global population of talented people who are looking to share a piece of themselves... onephoto a... more »

It'll Blind You

Someone once told me to never shoot straight into the sun.  Well, I don't like rules too much.  At f22 I think the sun looks glorious.  And really, all the fun things it does while bouncing around inside your lens, who could resist?

G+ for iPhone

Took a break from work to play with the new G+ for iPhone that includes Snapseed integration. This was a shot from the other evening along Waterfront Park here in Portland. I added a little retro filter and made some small adjustments.

Portland Spring

Every year the cherry blossoms are a major attraction at the Japanese Memorial along the waterfront downtown Portland.  It is a big sign that winter is behind us and that the sun will be coming.  Thursday after work I met up with +Brian Matiash to capture the trees in bloom while they last.  Between the wind and the rain, the flowers don't stand a chance to last as long as they could.  In the background is the Steel Bridge, my favorite of the bridges that Portland is famous for.

Branching Out

After a lazy morning of sitting around the house reading I joined up with +Nicole S. Young and +Brian Matiash  to shoot some waterfalls.  We ventured to the Washington side of the Gorge to see Steep Creek Falls for the first time.  We were not disappointed.  This was a fantastic location with plenty of shooting ops.  The three of us spent a little time shooting the actual falls before venturing out to the surrounding area to find other things to shoot.

I found this tree at the bank of the creek and must have shot it from four other angles before settling on this as the one I wanted.  I was drawn the moss that covered the base, it contrasted against the white bark so nicely.  With the creek rushing behind it I thought a long exposure with a short depth of field would work just fine.  Here’s what I came back with.

Happy Monday everyone, I hopethe St. Pa... more »

Raising a Woman

I've had a number of jobs in my life, some that I've loved and some that I've hated, some that have been hard and some easy.  The hardest job that I've had that I've loved the most is being a dad.  Especially to this young lady.  This year she'll turn sixteen and it feels like yesterday that we were watching Dora the Explorer together.  The saying that "time flies" definitely applies to raising children.

Last weekend we were down at my parents house to celebrate my dads birthday.  Their kitchen window was glowing with light so I asked the girly, who loves to have her picture taken, to stand int the light so I could play for a bit.  I loved how the light fell across her face and how her hair glowed (and yes it's blue). I processed this shot mostly in LR but ran it through PS for some small touches.

Home Is Where The Heart Is

Our first night in Death Valley we drove out to do some light painting at this abandoned mine site where the living quarters are still standing.  The night sky was brilliant and the site was the perfect spot to play with the lights.  While +Brian Matiash painted the outside of the home I was on the inside painting with the red light.  +Amy Heiden and +Ricardo Lagos were behind us working on their own projects.

This is a single exposure edited 100% in Lightroom.

Play Time

Sometimes it's just time to play.  Tonight was one of those nights.  The sun was going down and there wasn't a cloud to be seen so I knew sunset was going to be meh.  When I got home I grabbed my lights, told my daughter to put on her rock face, and then headed out to the woods behind my house for a little impromptu shoot.

This shot was created by using a slow shutter speed, two lights and a little camera movement during the open shutter.  The model is my rockstar daughter and the shoes were provided by Converse .  The post processing was made simple with the addition of a little North Shore, an +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom  preset by the one and only +Nicole S. Young available at http://store.nicolesy.com/products-page/

Driftwood Graveyard

Saturday was a really good day, but it didn't start that way.  I had plans to drive out to the coast to shoot some waterfalls and those plans changed the closer I got to the coast.  It wasn't raining when I left the house but by the time I got to the parking lot for the first waterfall it was raining really hard.  I decided to skip the falls and head down to Oswald West State Park to do some reminiscing about my childhood days when the family used to camp there.  Today the campground has been closed and it's only open to day use but the beauty of that spot is still the same.

At the parking lot I gathered my gear and hit the trail.  About 100 feet in the rain stopped.  The closer I got to the beach the more light I could see in the sky and once I hit the beach I could actually see blue patches in the sky.  Some say "if you don'tlike th... more »

Had a fun night at The Professor's (+Kelly-Shane Fuller) house for an impromptu film developing session. The students present were +Lars Gustafson, +Christopher Germano, my daughter and I.

Here, Brianna is rolling her film onto the tricky-thingamabob while Chris is in the final stage of processing and Lars is on a coffee break ;). Soon I hope to be able to show you the results of our pinhole experiment.

PS - thanks a ton +Kelly-Shane Fuller!

KODAK!

Today I got to meet up with +Sheilia Millier who is the lucky person who gets to watch Kodak while +Brian Matiash and +Nicole S. Young tromp through the land down under.  Enjoy your time Bricolesy, Kodak is in really good hands and is growing like a weed.

My daughter and I took some pictures of him while we played at the park today and I thought I'd share them because really this may be the cutest dog on the planet (sorry Owen).

I should mention that the cover photo on this album was actually taken by my daughter. So photo credit to Brianna ;)

Haystack Sunset

On Sunday when I got to Cannon Beach there wasn't any color showing in the horizon despite it being sunset.  So to make the best of the situation I put on my trusty Lee Filter Holder and slid in a 1.5 ND filter to do some long exposures.  The tide was coming in so I set up in the wet part of the sand, hooked up my remote trigger and ran from the incoming waves like a kid.  Fortunately my tripod is heavy and took the waves like a champ.  I had a number of concerned onlookers ask me if I was concerned about my camera... psssh... without risk there is no reward.  This shot was the wave I was waiting for, a nice long wave with lots of bubbles.  I new I'd get the nice streaking as the wave receded.  "But Brian, this photo has color?" you ask... yes, yes it does.  The final image had a nice blue tone to it, so with a little tweak of the white balance anda run t... more »

The Big Blue Marble

It's been said that Earth looks like a big blue marble from space.  Well through my 10.5mm fisheye it also looks like a blue marble from Cannon Beach.

This weekend I sat on my but a lot and did little to nothing.  So yesterday  afternoon I woke from an unnecessary nap and felt the urge to do something - so I grabbed my camera gear and jumped in the Jeep for a drive out to see Haystack Rock at sunset.  Well sunset was a bit of a disappointment so I played around with some long exposures.  It was a good way to end the weekend.

Basking In The Sun

Here's another shot from the Racetrack in Death Valley.  One of the lone Sailing Stones sits in its own path casting long shadows as the sun bids us farewell with it's beautiful rays filling the sky one last time for the day.

I've found Widmer's KGB on the shelves.  This was a highlight from an Oregon Brewer's Festival a couple years ago and then was their W' series for that year.  If you've not had it and like Russian Imperials, it's a must.

Dune

Last night I got to play a bit more in +onOne Software's Perfect Black & White.  Recently it seems as though I haven't had much time to just sit and play on the computer.  For this image I took a single dune from my recent trip to Death Valley and masked in a LE sky from my cloud collection as a contrast to the stillness of the dune.

Have a great weekend everybody and I hope you get the chance to go out and have some fun.  I know I'm going to.  Oh, and go Niners! (that's for my dad and sister)

Racing Along

Sunset at the Racetrack was no day at the races.  These suckers don't even move.  Ha. There is part of me that hopes nobody ever figures out how these rocks move along the floor of this playa.  The mystery adds so much to the interest of this area in Death Valley.

1.8 Billion Pixels

1 Million TB of video per day

No you did not misread those numbers.

As a photographer the technology shown in this video is fascinating but as a citizen it is a bit creepy. The evolution of surveillance technology is mind blowing.  I'm thinking PreCrime Unit is next.

"LOOK!" says +Amy Heiden "Mountain goats!!!"

Three doors fly open, cameras come up and I start calling out to my new friends "baa... Baaa.... BAAAAA!!!"

I know it's not the sharpest photo but I was just excited to see these guys running around.  My camera was set for landscape work, not an action scene so I did my best on the fly.  All the while calling out to them in their own language.  That is until it looked like they were going to charge.  I swear they were coming for us.  I wasn't looking forward to taking one of those horns in the ass.   But then they saw +Ricardo Lagos and ran away.  Phew, sore ass avoided!
