So, the 420 gathering happened in Denver today, estimated 10,000 people.
Gunfire, and two were wounded. One in the ankle the other in the leg. I think to myself - "How do you fire a round in a crowd of 10,000 and not kill at least two people?"
(Speculation) Some would-be gangsta got baked and reached into his pocket and shot himself in the ankle, and a bystander got hit with the round off the ground.

Clawed drone grabs prey on the fly just like an eagle
[...]Inspired by the way a bald eagle swoops down to seize a fish from the water with its claws, Justin Thomas and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia have developed a fast-acting, talon-like gripper for a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).[...]

Comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) and a possible Mars Impact

C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) is an Oort cloud comet discovered on 3 January 2013 by Robert H. McNaught at Siding Spring Observatory using a 0.5-meter (20 in) Schmidt telescope, at Magnitude 18.6. Precovery images of the comet by the Catalina Sky Survey from 8 December 2012 were quickly found. At the time of discovery the comet was 7.2 AU from the Sun.

Mars impact risk:
A possible impact of the newly discoverd coemt C/2013 A1 (Sidiing Spring) with Mars.

At the time, although an impact was possible the nominal orbit was pretty far from Mars. Now after some more observations and refinement of the orbit, the orbital track has moved in a bit.

With an observation arc of 74 days, there is a small possibility that the comet could impact Mars on 19 October 2014, This is much closer than the previous 0.006 AU, but... more »

Real time tracking and discussion of the asteroid pass in a hangout

Even NASA doubts their ability to accurately track the object due to it's speed, a Moon's width each second at closest approach.
+Slooh Space Camera is hosting 3 shows today covering the asteroid. Astronomer +Paul Cox will devote himself to manually commanding the scope to have any chance of tracking it. I think he will pull it off!
Also hosting in the hangout is one of the best astronomers and science writers I have ever had the privilege of learning from, +Bob Berman .
These guys put on a great show, and you can ask the professionals your questions!

Moon, Venus, Jupiter and the Milky Way Galaxy seen over ESO’s Very Large Telescope from Earth

In the night sky over ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) observatory at Paranal, the +Moon shines along with two bright companions : already aloft in the heavens and glowing in the centre of the image is +Venus, Earth’s closest planetary neighbour, and, to its right, the giant, though more distant planet, +Jupiter. Such apparent celestial near misses — although the heavenly bodies are actually tens to hundreds of millions of kilometres apart — are called conjunctions.

Still other sights delight this night view at Paranal : the radiant, reddish plane of the +Milky Way, smouldering on the horizon, and an 8.2-metre VLT Unit Telescope, along with a 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescope, standing firmly on the ground.

About 3 feet wide cut from 3/16ths plate, the scale texture accomplished with the edge of a 4 inch angle grinder, colored with airbrushed transparent shades of green to allow the steel's texture to play with the light.

Live Show: Debunking the End of the World:
On the +Slooh Space Camera homepage (slooh.com) at
18:40PST ¦  21:40EST  ¦  02:40UTC (other times here: http://goo.gl/8BJcL).

We've got a great live astro show lined up in a couple of hours - free to everyone!

We're attempting to take all the scaremongering and tabloid hokum about the "End of the World" and, instead of just dismissing all the claims and "theories" out there, we're trying to explain, usually with the aid of direct astronomical observation, why these things aren't true - and why we're all going to be waking up on Saturday morning!

Tonight's show will have live images of comet C/2012 K5 (LINEAR) , which is putting on a great show at the moment from Slooh's Canary Islands Observatory.  We'll also have live H-Alpha images of the Sun from+Matt F... more »
