In Search of a Soulmate
Working in a 3 foot wide format just lends itself to linear subjects and my Bird on a Wire series just called out to me this week. I had tinkered with this canvas for 2 years, it was an albatross around my neck and spent many a night under the bed, but this week, I just felt the birds needed a home and it fit here. This is one of those joyful pieces, makes me smile, makes others smile. Those does the artist heart good.

Impressions of Proust Art Journal Page
I am not well read in Proust but was inspired today by this page with an article about his impact as a writer. Made me at least intrigued enough to want to explore is writings a bit more, and the act of journaling within this context was quite illuminating for my own self. Nice end result to an art journal page.

I came home after teaching class and decided to do some quick bottle sketches using my Lorina Limonade bottles that I fill with colored water. These sketches where to try out the combination of Neocolor II's, Valspar Satin Paint Samples, and Chartpak Ad Markers. Totally love that combination. #artjournal #mixedmedia

The Illusion of Beauty
To work with a figurative piece that captures the essence of emotion, with a whimsical palette, but emits a much stronger influence on the viewer was a challenge, and I am totally pleased with where this began and ended. "The Illusion of Beauty" 4 feet by 4 feet. You can read about the process on my blog as well. http://ardithsart.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-illusion-of-beauty-painting.html

What happened to my stream?
Why am I only seeing the same handful of folks in my stream if I am viewing my "All" stream and have its setting set to "all?" It's as if I am following only about 20 folks?

Half way through my altered book and am totally loving this journey. This book has given me insight into artists from the 60's, allowed me the space to test out new techniques, and totally transformed my daily sketch practice. Can't imagine working through a series any other way. The album here shows the pages and works in progress and the link here is the finished pages on my website. Each image has a link to the blog post describing the process if their was one. Hope you might take a peek if you are an art journal fan. https://ardith-goodwin.squarespace.com/art-journal-sketchbook/

Half Way Finished With My Altered Book
I am in total love with the mixed media process of altering this book. Rather than sketch and practice on canvas, I opted to try new techniques and sketch practices within the framework of using an old, art book from 1962 called "The Perspectives on the Arts." The journey so far has been amazing and I look forward to completing this artistic path. Part of the images are assignments from the online class I am taking by Juliana Coles and the other pages are of my own volition. I can't stress enough how impactful keeping an art journal is on my practice and would encourage all artists to try it! You can view all of my completed pages here: http://ardithgoodwin.com/art-journal-sketchbook/
and each image has a link to the blog post that shows the work in progress images as well.

Layers of What If Art Journal Page
Oh, this page was like walking through wet mortar, but nonetheless, I trudged on and am pleased with the outcome and the lesson. As I journey through this journal, not only am I discovering art elements that are changing how I go about my paintings but I am learning quite a bit about the internal self as well. Not a bad trade off for slinging some paint, graphite, and collage bits. You can view the entire journal here: https://ardith-goodwin.squarespace.com/art-journal-sketchbook/

Fish Fodder Art Journal Page
Yesterday I sketched the fish I caught onto a page that was a previous, hideous sketch that went awry. My goal was to see how the Crayola markers compared with the Prismacolor markers with washes, line, and saturation....as well as get a semblance of the fish. I wasn't going for pretty...just a study. The study turned out quite valuable. http://ardithsart.blogspot.com/2013/06/fish-fodder-art-journal-page.html

My Art Journal Pages
Finally, have many of my art journal pages under one roof! These pages are created for many different reasons. Most of them are from my altered book, "The Perspectives on the Arts" which is a 1962 copy of the published book showcasing the different Dadaists and art trends during that time. I have also included my watercolor sketchbook and Field Notes Journal pages. http://ardithgoodwin.com/art-journal-sketchbook/

The Dog Lover Art Journal Page
Although today is Caturday, this guy is not a fan, lol. This page was a study in using left over paint, sketching with oil pastels, and matching quotes with mood. I am a cat lover, this guy, not so much. http://ardithgoodwin.com/art-journal-sketchbook/

I was amazed to find out how great the wash affect was when using a cheap Crayola black marker. I will never look at the Crayola aisle the same way again, ;) Here is my sketch of my Nikon in a blind contour, 2 min, and 5 min sketch using only that marker.

My Latest Art Journal Page
This one was inspired by Klee and Kandinsky. I sketched my neighbor's little cottage and fence, then collage one on my prints to create the house. I glazed acrylics next, and began to add text through collage and pens. I then sketched the faces to embrace the message of the piece. I am so loving this book!

Hannah Hoch a Pioneer in Photomantage
I was not aware of the female Dadaist, Hannah Hoch, and her influence in the photomontage world of fine art until I stopped to create this art journal page today. The spread was about Hausmann and Hoch, their connection, and their contribution to the Dada movement in Berlin. I chose to celebrate the idea of strong women, my own connections with them, and her juxtaposition of disregarding society's concept of beauty and turning it on its head compared to the idea of beauty and grace. Art journaling is so much more than painting pages, for me, it is a window into the world of my own art development, and I love it.

Happy Memorial Day!
Happy Memorial Day friends! Here is one of my older pieces, in honor of a fallen soldier, Michael Dahl, several years ago. I spend today with much gratitude for all who serve and honor those we have lost serving our country. If you are outside the U.S., today is Memorial Day for us.

Totally Weird Art Journal Page
This actually started out as a sketch of my backyard which entailed a table, tree, figure, chair, fence, swing, foliage, and text, I kid you not. Through an entire mess of mud, I happened upon this perspective when I inadvertently turned the page sideways. The pool and diving platform was right there....crazy odd. You can see the drastic change if you click through to my blog or view the album. I still have a hard time believing that two very distinct images occurred on the same page, just different viewpoints. Love it when art turns me on my head.

Need Some Insight From You If You Are Active In Communities Here
I have a great community here on Google+ but have noticed a trend, especially in the arts/photog communities of members joining, visiting, posting a pic, and running with no insight or dialogue whatsoever. I call these 'Drive By Posts" and they are driving me nuts. What I am curious about is the why....
1. Is this a learned behavior based on what the majority of communities experience....is this the norm?
2. Are members really so busy/uninterested in group guidelines that they choose not to read them or is it a lack of knowing where to find them?
3. I wouldn't dare walk into an arts community, place one of my paintings down on a chair, and walk out. In essence, that is what they are doing. Is there are lack of connection due to the digital environment online....really?
4. ... more »

How are you dealing with Drive By Posts and Encouraging Engagement in Your Communities?
I am quite curious if any of you moderators have found a way to dissuade 'drive by' posts and encourage engagement in your communities. I realize part of it is education on the moderators part, to let the new members know how each community works, but it seems that users on the whole tend to ignore posting guidelins and have become accustomed to post and run strategies. Any tips on how to improve/change that?

Updated Our About Section And Posting Guidelines
Hey friends! I have updated our About Section with links to the posting guidelines and tips for posting pics as well. Let me know if we need to add or change any. Pretty much the only issue on my end that I am seeing are members or new members doing a lot of 'drive by' posting. I realize, especially if you are new to our group, you are not aware or used to how we post, but please, please, please, read the guidelines and give us some information about your artwork so that we can discuss it with you. We wish to be as excited about your artwork as you are, but we can't be if all one does is post a pic/link and run.
There are so many art communities on Google+ that serve that purpose, this isn't one of them. I will begin to start removing posts that are basic drive by posts but would much rather not have to. For our a... more »

Mixed Media Art Journal Challenge
Do you keep an art journal or sketchbook? For years I kept a sketchbook, did my collage a day, but this year I opted to really focus on creating mixed media art journals. I also joined "Field Notes" and online class by Juliana Coles which has been a huge force in pushing my daily sketch practice. I would love for our community to share some art journal pages, if you keep one, and if you don't, the challenge for the week would be to start one, even if it is simply sketching. Can you set a goal and sketch for 7 days? 5-min to 10 min a sketch? I shall sit back, as I work on my own, and be sending you (((((I know they can))))) vibes all week. If you are apt for online classes I highly recommend her class as well, totally one of the best classes I have ever taken! #artjournal

ARTISTS! If you're sharing your work on Google+ there's one important new "feature" you're going to want to disable immediately! Auto Enhance.
You know those colors you slaved over for hours to get just right? Google+ thinks it can do better, and if you don't turn it off it will boost up the saturation and blow out the contrast, forcing you to go back to every image individually to undo it.
Or, you can nip it in the bud right now. Go to the left to make the pop up menu appear, hit settings, and uncheck the box I've highlighted below.

Join the New To Google+? Team
For some of us, we love Google+ a great deal and are anxious to see it succeed. We have sent out invites, only to find that our friends, family, and co-workers join but don’t find their first experience here successful and leave after the first day. I want them to enjoy Google+ with me and am actively trying to make their first visit here one that shows the brilliance of G+. Although Google has in place many help features, we believe that there are steps we can take as a user base to help those new members feel at home from day one as well. We also realize that the Google+ Community Managers are pretty swamped and can't always engage in one on one conversations to answer questions, (although +Natalie Villalobos does a pretty sweet job!) That is where we, the users can help.
Here is how you can help:

Google+ Changes
As you probably have figured out there are tons of new changes to Google+, including community changes. It will take me a day or two to update our About page here, but this is where I will 'land' our guidelines and such. I am actually excited about the changes, but with everything, there will always be a learning curve. In the meantime, if you use the hasthtag #mixedmediatechniques or #mixedmedia in your personal posts, they can be picked up in a separate stream now much more easily! Hope your creativity was productive today!

Say hello to the new Google+!
A quick tour of what you're about to (or just) see(ing)
It baffles me how quickly and unilaterally Google is rolling out massive updates to its social network. With each new update, Google+ helps you find and interact with more and more content. This update is no different. Frankly, it's putting facebook to serious shame. Announced at Google IO today, I made a simple slideshow so you can check out the new experience you're about to have here!

The Influence of Rosemarie Beck
Until this week I was not familiar with Rosemarie Beck's figurative work, but since I read the interview she gave in 62 as part of my art journal page development I have become quite enamored with her and hope to learn more. To celebrate the finding of a gem, I chose to practice a few quick, gestural studies and write a bit about drawing from the inspiration of Nicolaide as well. This, along with the prepping of a bunch of art journal pages, made for a glorious day! http://ardithsart.blogspot.com/2013/05/page-prepping-and-rosemarie-beck-art.html

We are a friendly group of artists here and welcome anyone wishing to share and learn about mixed media techniques. Here are some suggested guidelines for sharing in our community. When you visit, please don't just share a pic and run, we desire and value feedback in this community. May it always stay so.
