And while I don't think I've ever been long-term clinically depressed, I do completely understand the frustration of perky people constantly telling you total bullshit on how to make your problem better.  You get the same sorts of things with infertility problems.  Everyone you meet has one of the same few varieties of misinformed advice and/or urban legend-ish story, and even though you never ask for any of it, you'll get it shoveled at you and then you're supposed to be grateful for it.

The correct response to someone going through something bad is never unsolicited advice or a story you heard.  The correct response is much more likely to be, "I'm sorry you're going through that. How can I help?"  And then doing that. Maybe ... more »
