Conservative Advice To GOP: Don't Legislate, Focus On Scandals
http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics/2013/05/17/184824660/advice-to-gop-dont-legislate-focus-on-scandals
Heritage Action, the political activist offshoot of the conservative Heritage Foundation, has some advice for House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor: focus on the scandals plaguing the Obama administration and stay away from legislation that could "highlight major schisms" within the House Republican Conference.
In a letter this week to the leaders, Heritage Action CEO Michael Needham says "outrage over Benghazi" and the IRS targeting of Tea Party groups has "rightly focused the nation's attention squarely on the actions of the Obama administration." The letter goes on to say the House must continue holding oversight hearings, "but it would be... more »

A photo exhibit called "The Neighbors" features images of residents of a glass-walled luxury apartment building in Manhattan who had no idea they were being photographed from across the street. They never consented to being subjects for the works of art that are now on display _ and for sale _ in a gallery. Read more here: http://apne.ws/12g8i63

Ha! My score sucked! My mouse kept getting stuck. Would have been higher. Excuses excuses. I like Arknoid better anyway. :)

Last night we ate our wedding cake top - which was really just the leftovers from our 1650 +Baked by Melissa cupcakes we had at the wedding. +Adam Berson put a note on them telling me that we weren't allowed to eat them until 5/12/2013. It was worth the wait. They were yummy.

Yesterday I went to a class at a gym in Hoboken called "Work It Out" (or WIO). The name of the class was "Next Stop Skinny". The description of the class is this:
Next Stop Skinny™
All aboard! Next stop Skinny U, where you learn how amazing it feels to tone every inch of your body. No muscle is left behind in this 55-minute total body circuit class where each station works a different spot and blasts of cardio keep you chugging. Be prepared to lose some baggage.
This was by far the hardest workout class I've ever taken. Including personal training. I was the fattest and oldest girl in the class. (I'm not super skinny, but I wouldn't normally describe myself as fat. And I'm not straight out of college, but I'm not old either. But in this class I was both fat and old).
Because of my herniated disc and ar... more »

Tonight from +Blue Apron was flank steak, watercress salad with pickled turnips, and cauliflower with the best sauce I've ever had in my life (mustard/mayonaise/honey/etc sauce). So so good. The turnips were very good. I've never had turnips before. They actually tasted a bit like horseradish - which I actually really love.
That's what I love about these meals - it gives me a reason to try a bunch of things I normally wouldn't buy or eat.

I've lived in my new apartment since mid-February, and today was the first time I actually went to my old subway station after work, instead of the PATH train. Not bad, only once in 3 months! :)
I was standing before the subway turnstiles with my PATH card in my hand thinking "Hmm, I don't think this card is going to work here". I was confused, and then I figured out what I had done. Whooops!

Obama "Very Proud" Of Gay Basketball Player Jason Collins
None of us will ever agree with all decisions that any given politician makes. Do I love everything Obama has done? No. Is he our best hope these days to at least make some progress on important social issues? I think yes, which is why I voted for him. Economies are cyclical. We'll always go up and down, up and down, no matter who is in charge.
But social change seems to only move forward. I love how Obama's views on homosexuality have evolved and he keeps going further. It was about a year ago that he publicly declared that he was in favor of gay marriage being legal. I love how he says here that what is important is someone's character, not sexual orientation. This video shows good character on his part.

This is a video about the family camp that my family has been going to one week every summer since 1978. (I was born in 1979, so for my whole life). Michigania is such a special place. Even this video can't do it justice. I can't wait until I have kids one day and can bring them with us. This was one of my dad's favorite places on earth. We'll be going again in July.

Well, to follow in the footsteps of my dad, who always called us exactly at midnight on our birthdays, I thought I would do a post exactly (or near) midnight on the anniversary of the day he died. 2 years ago today, May 2, 2011, my dad passed away of prostate cancer. On May 5th, at his memorial service, I gave the below speech.
I miss him a lot and it's been a rough couple of years. But a lot of great things have happened to me and my family in the last 2 years too. Such is life. Like the roller coaster speech in the movie Parenthood: The roller coaster (which also happened to be one of my dad's favorite movies, from which he quoted often).
Anyway, here is my speech:
I’d like to start with a “Deep Thought by Jack Handy”. It goes, “Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis.” Well, thank goo... more »

I just spend 9 minutes and 28 seconds on the phone with a hotel in San Francisco trying to get the folio from my boss's visit, for the expense report I'm doing. That should have taken less than 1 minute. The lady who answered the phone said that only accounting can send folios so I'd have to call back at 9am PT or leave a voice mail for accounting. From working in hotels for 6.5 years, I know that isn't true.(Or it shouldn't be).
I asked to be transferred to the front desk. The guy was nice enough, but I don't think he knew how to send a folio, even though that is something a front desk should be able to do, especially at a +The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts . He was concerned that he was sending it to me, and not my boss directly. I gave a lot of identifying information, including the confirmation number. There should not be a concern there.
He sa... more »

I want to buy this: http://grapeseedoil.com/chili.php
but the cost of shipping is almost as much as the product. I've looked around online and I can't find a local source for this. Anyone have any ideas on where I can get this without paying almost as much for shipping as for the product itself?
I tried this last weekend when in Napa and it was absolutely on of the best things I've ever tasted. (Tried it with bread, and also with balsamic vinegar as dressing for my salad).

There are 17 terminals at Hertz and only four are being used. And there are about 427 people in line. Why don't they use the other 13 terminals? I see companies do this all the time. I know they are trying to save money but this is ridiculous.

Maybe we agree more often than we are led to believe
Fascinating way to look at this. I think we DO have more common ground than media outlets and politicians would lead us to believe. Maybe we should work together on fixing the things we actually agree on, and then move to the more difficult topics.
Starting with the most contentious topics hasn't gotten us anywhere yet.

This is really moving. I cried a bit.
When I was in college I did a one woman show for my senior project. It was a cabaret called "Gorgeous". It had ten songs and "patter" in between. The theme running through the show was me coming to terms with my looks throughout my life and education.
I always hated my big nose and my awful profile, but I decided that I didn't want to get a nose job, even though I had been told by many people that I should.
I'm still not super pleased when I look at myself in the mirror, but at least I'm looking at me. Watching this video made me realize how many people aren't pleased by the way they look - and I think these women are all beautiful!
Such an interesting experiment here. I'd be interested to partake in something like this.

We had dinner guests tonight so +Adam Berson and I ended up making two of our +Blue Apron meals at one time (since each of them is set up for portions for 2 people). It turned out pretty well! One was a chicken salad with tons of vegetables. One was a roast beef with horseradish sauce and a side salad, and multi-colored carrots. YUMMMMMMM!!!! Thanks for joining us +Steven Dimirsky and +Scott Wen !

Patton Oswalt's take:
Boston. Fucking horrible.
I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, "Well, I've had it with humanity."
But I was wrong. I don't know what's going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.
But here's what I DO know. If it's one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of... more »

Horrible experience with +Virgin America . Just terrible. Who manages their website? Please fix.
I book flights all of the time on Virgin America for myself and my boss. My boss is Virgin Gold status, which should count for something too.
Today I was booking one of those (many) flights. I was in the middle of the booking, almost ready to click "purchase" when I got kicked out and got a pop up that said an error had occurred. When I went back into the site to book the flight the fare had gone up by almost $300! ($520 to $801). I talked to two different people and the best they could offer me was that they could give me the original price, if I could provide them with a screenshot of the earlier fare. Why would I have a screenshot of that? There is a timer when booking flights (similar to ticket master) that says you have "X" minutes to book this flight without los... more »
