Bird N°49 Woodpigeon
Latin:Columba palumbus
A strange bird in that it has been observed breeding in every month of the year, although in Scotland it breeds mainly between July and September. They are frequently misidentified being confused with Stock Dove (Columba oenas) and Rock Dove (Columba livia) the key identifying mark is that white patch on the neck and it is larger than the other pigeons/doves, but you can only really make that comparison if you see them together.

Mating Common Toads - Bufo bufo
I almost didn't see these Toads, as I was walking in a wooded area I was concentrating on what was in the trees not what was on the floor, fortunately my wife did see them and managed to keep our dog out of the way. The moral is simple when you're shooting wildlife remember that nature is above, below, right, left, front and back so keep your eyes open and look all around or you will miss something rather special.

Red Deer
I was pleased to see the herd of Red Deer again, having not seen them since the Rutting season in the Autumn. It was interesting to see the different growth rates of the stags antlers, from 4 points down to buds just starting to grow. Hopefully it will not be so long before I see them again, but they have a large area to roam on that is well away from any roads.
I even had a Highland Bull gate crash the party as well although it's not exactly his best side.

Goldfinch
Latin: Carduelis carduelis
This is a rather poor image because it is a small bird and it's a long way off on a windy day, so focusing on the bird was difficult.
I will therefore post a better image in a few weeks when I have revisited this location.
There are around 40 - 60,000 breeding pairs in Scotland, they are about 4.5 inches long and slimmer than their cousins, the Chaffinch. This size means that they are light enough to feed on the seeds of groundsel, thistles, etc, as well as garden plants like pansies and forget-me-not; as it can take them straight from the plant. Only relatively recently has it been seen visiting bird feeders. In the past it was quite common for people to catch them and keep them in cages, fortunately this tradition has died out, because bird numbers were suffering in the wild as a result.

Kirkcaldy Station
I was recently visiting my parents and travelled by train, on the way back up I took some shot from the train, some worked out not to bad and some just didn't. I shot with my 50mm f1.8 wide open to let me shoot while moving, as well as blowing out the dirt on the window and to my surprise some of the shots came out really well. I will share them over the next wee while. This shot was taken in the Station at Kirkcaldy, so the train was static for this one.

New Wind Farm Being Built
The wind farm will have 18 turbines each with a height of up to 125 metres (including the blades) and has a total generating capacity of around 54 megawatts. Once built, Middlemoor Wind Farm will generate enough electricity each year to supply the average needs of 27,600 homes.
Donald Trump has a major dislike of these turbines, personally I like them I find them to be pleasing on the eye and really sculptural in the right place they are an asset to a landscape. What do you think?

Tree Sparrow _Passer montanus_
There are between 4600 and 8100 nesting pairs in Scotland. They have a varied diet eating seed from grasses, cereals, wild herbs, in addition to which it eats, aphids, caterpillars, weevils, beetles and to a lesser extent takes insects on the wing. A much shyer than their cousins the larger House Sparrows, but both species have been known to roost together during winter months and beyond -which is the case in my front garden where this shot was taken,

Learning to Drive
Listening to Sophie Morgan on BBC Breakfast, this morning, talking about Young drivers and learning to drive. She has made a documentary "*Licensed to Kill" on BBC3 tonight 9pm*, she was paralyzed in an accident when she was driving a decade ago. The accident was her fault which means that she is one of the 20% of young drivers that will have a major accident within ONE year of passing their test. I, myself was part of that statistic. Over the years I have known several young drivers whose lives have been irrevocably changed by a crash, some who paid the ultimate price and a larger number who have had lucky escapes. Now with two children who are within 2 years of learning to drive and facing the obscene insurance premiums that that entails. (Living where we do learning to drive is an essential life skill and not something that can be seen as a lux... more »

Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto
A relative newcomer to Scotland arriving here in 1957, having had a remarkably quick progression from the Middle East and South East Europe. This was a natural increase is the birds range so is not viewed as an alien species, just a new one. They feed predominantly on grain, berries and seeds, but they have been known eat the occasional caterpillar and aphid. This is a bird that likes to be around human activity, but does not like city centres preferring to be in areas where there is active gardening and farming, however it tends to stay clear of moorland and mountains too.

Duotone Creel
A Creel, as it is known in Scotland - chiefly in the north, Is a device used to catch lobsters and crabs. Made of woven netting (similar to that used in traditional fishing net) over a frame of plastic tubing and a slatted wooden base, this type of creel is analogous in function to a lobster pot. Several creels shot on one line can be referred to as a "leader".
I took a close up shot of this great example and in processing decided to have a shot at Duotoning, blue and yellow giving the most pleasing result. The question is would you buy a print 12" + print of this as a piece of art? (Don't worry I won't hold you to it)

This is one of a number of my images that will soon be stocked by a local shop - Linden Tree, Huntly. It will be printed on a metallic paper and it sings like Lark. My current cover photo will also be available as a mounted 12 x 8 print.
Obviously not everyone can get to Huntly, therefore along with many other favourites they are available on my website - http://www.stuartimages.co.uk

Kildrummy Castle
Well worth a visit if your in our neck of the woods
The great castle of Kildrummy stands serene and confident, even in its present ruined state. In its heyday, back in the Middle Ages, it dominated Strathdon as the castle of the mighty earls of Mar. Of all the many fine castles of NE Scotland – a region dubbed ‘Castle Country’ – Kildrummy has no rivals. Not for nothing is it known as ‘the noblest of northern castles’.
Throughout its long and distinguished history, Kildrummy was seldom far from the political spotlight. It was built in the mid-13th century, in an age when the Scottish kings were battling to overcome the rebellious province of Moray further north. Kildrummy guarded the main routes from the south as they converged, before being funnelled northwards into Moray and Buchan.

Kildrummy Castle Gardens
A twentieth century garden in a ravine, made after 1900. Colonel James Ogstone made a water garden and a rock garden in an old quarry, from which sandstone was dug to build Kildrummy Castle. The bridge is a copy of the Brig o' Balgownie in Old Aberdeen.
The Kildrummy Castle Gardens is well planted, with advice from Aberdeen University. April shows the gold of the lysichitons in the water garden and the small bulbs naturalised beside the copy of the 14th century Brig o' Balgownie. Rhododendrons and azaleas from April (frost permitting). September/October brings colchicums and brilliant colour with acers, fothergillas and viburnums.
Aberdeen Branch Multiple Sclerosis Society receives 40% of the revenue raised from the entrance fee of £4.50 Children free.
