Garden Party         nature photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends
A chance to share old memories and play our songs again
                                              Rick Nelson

These are the some of the regulars who frequent the birdbath and feeders in our yard. The yellow ones are male American Goldfinches. The other three are House Finches – the males having the red coloring.

In the interest of full disclosure – I never got more than three of them to belly up to the bar at one time, so a little Pops Digital magic was needed to fill up the spaces.

This is my all-time most popular image. (You know...the one everyone likes to use without permission or crediting the artist.)

Clump of Springtime      flower photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

Some of the first bloomers in early spring, the Hepatica is a delightful wildflower find. This clump was photographed along a Wisconsin woodland path in April.

The Hepatica is in the buttercup family.  It's also known by some other odd names (at least, to me) such as  liverleaf, liverwort and squirrel cups. I've read the "liver" names have to do with the shape of the leaves, which some believe resemble a human liver. I've also read some Cherokee and Chippewa tribes used Hepatica as a treatment for liver disorders and it's still harvested for its medicinal values today.

Tiny Dancers        Flower photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

This spray of Forget Me Nots remind me of giddy, forest sprites dancing among the greenery.

With the dreary, winter weather we’ve been experiencing lately, I thought a spring-like image would be welcome. (No need to thank me.)

Forget Me Nots are some of my favorite flowers. However, they are so small, I have rarely captured an image of them that I really like. I really like this one.

Invitation To Spring
Flower photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

One of the most inviting indications of spring’s arrival are the cheerful daffodils. They are early bloomers and a sure sign of more spring beauty to come.

Normally I’m eagerly waiting for an opportunity to capture a few of these lovely flowers in our area of northeast Wisconsin.  These, however, were captured a couple of weeks before the bloom in our neighborhood.

On a recent trip to southern California we visited the higher elevations around San Bernardino where they still had small patches of snow and were experiencing their own spring arrival.  I snapped this pair blooming near Big Bear Lake.

Guarding the Beauty
Flower photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

This is kind of a beauty-and-the-beast image. The Dianthus flowers in our yard caught my eye. As I moved in to take the shot, the little crab spider made himself known. I didn’t see him until I was right on top of him. I backed off…then moved in…then backed off…then moved in. When I moved in, he would take an aggressive stance. When I backed off, he would relax. Whatever his strategy was, it must have worked well since, judging by the girth of his tiny frame, I’d say he hadn’t missed any meals.

This photo was taken many years ago with my old Kodak camera. A little “vintage” Pops Digital for you.

Valley of Promise      landscape photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

A panoramic view of a peaceful valley nestled among the rugged San Bernardino Mountains; part of the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California.

We were visiting family in San Bernardino. It was my first trip to the West Coast. We took a drive up to Big Bear Lake and stopped at various spots along the way to enjoy the view and snap a few frames.

Thankfully, as you can see, we had a cloud-filled sky so the sunlight wasn’t too harsh for this mid-day image. I like the clouds touching the top of the mountain. From this vantage point, I think you can see a little sliver of the ocean  in the distance.

To capture this wide angle vista, I took 11 separate photos (in portrait orientation) and then merged them into one very large image (11,843 x 4916 pixels,76.7 MB... more »

Family Feets       lifestyle photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

A family visit to the lake yielded this foot portrait.

I love this image because it sparks the imagination – wondering about the family and the story behind this scene.

As you study the image, it also provides plenty of interest points – the dimples, the wet hair, the toes, the positions, the water drops, the diaper.

Feet are very unique and always interesting, although, sometimes, in an unappealing way. I thought this was a very appealing bunch.

Bird of Paradise     flower photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

Flowers are one of my favorite photography subjects. They provide an infinite variety of appealing color and form.

This exotic beauty was photographed at a botanical garden.  This is the bloom of the Bird-of-Paradise plant; also known as the crane flower.

Bird-of-paradise (Strelitzia reginae) is a native of South Africa and is closely related to the banana plant.

The name is derived from the unique flower it bears.  Some say it resembles a brightly colored bird in flight.  I think it more resembles the bird’s head with a colorful plumage crest. Either way, it is a striking and unusual flower.

Harbor Lights       full moon photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

The full moon staged a dramatic entrance near the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse on Friday, July 15, 2011.

It was the first night of Kewaunee’s annual Trout Festival. I had scouted out the area and selected a spot to take photos of the upcoming fireworks show. While waiting, the moon slowly emerged from the horizon – starting out to the left of the lighthouse and moving directly behind the lighthouse and beyond, as you can see.

I was excited to be able to be in the perfect spot to catch the two together. There was one spoiler, though. The pier to the lighthouse happens to be the site of the fireworks launch. The technicians putting on the fireworks show were on the pier, as were their vehicles and equipment. Photoshop to the rescue!

The moon and lighthouse together would still make a cool image, but I thought they would be better without the distracting clutter. It took a little time to digitally clear the pier, but I think the final product was worth it.

Spring Beauty      flower photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

These delicate flowers are known as “Spring Beauty” and “Siberian Squill.” Their formal name is Scilla Siberic.

They are very short (the tallest of the bunch might be 6 inches) and very early, spring bloomers. Scilla Siberic is native to southwestern Russia, the Caucasus, and Turkey. Despite its name, it is not native to Siberia. This small bunch pops up every spring in the lawn of our Wisconsin home.

Heading for Open Water          winter landscape by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

A commercial fishing boat (the Oliver H. Smith) breaks its way through the ice of the Kewaunee, Wisconsin harbor on their way to the open waters of Lake Michigan.

The ice in the harbor was thick enough to make getting out a challenge and it took quite a while for the boat to break through. It would push and crunch its way into the ice, traveling 20 or 30 feet at a time before it would be halted. Then it would back up and take another run at it…for the next 20 or 30 feet…back up and repeat until it finally got to open water. This shot shows it clear of the solid ice, heading out of the harbor. I’ve included a short video of the struggle on my website: http://popsdigital.com/lighthouse/heading-open-water/

Be Still My Soul      sunrise lighthouse by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

I find this to be a very therapeutic scene. It is the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse with the waves of Lake Michigan rolling and reflecting the sunrise in the foreground. To add and extra measure of calming grace, six Canada geese fly past the lighthouse.  (If you look close, you’ll even see a sea gull above the geese, on the right side.)

This is one of my favorite images.  I captured this at the end of last February – the same morning I captured, Morning Rolls In, posted March 1st. Look back and compare the two.  This one was after the sun was up and into the clouds.  Morning Rolls In was shot earlier, before the sun breached the horizon.

Of Tulips Past    monochrome flower photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

These tulips have long past, but their memory lives on in digital form. Long live the tulips!

These tulips were two-toned in color – not your typical red or yellow. Ironically, I thought the unique, contrasting colors made them good candidates for a monochrome treatment.

To me, the detail in the petals are much more interesting in a higher contrast B&W. In fact, I think this would make an impressive, large print. May have to do that.

Sea of Gulls       landscape sunrise by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

Seagulls take to flight before the Kewaunee, Wisconsin pier and lighthouse as the sun rises over Lake Michigan.

On this morning I was on the beach to photograph the sunrise. I had finished and started walking back to the car, ready to head home to grab breakfast before going to work. As I neared the parking lot, I noticed a large number of seagulls resting on the beach. I figured, as I got closer, they would eventually take off. So I prepared my camera for the shot.

When they began to take off, with my camera at arm’s length, I just pointed in their direction and snapped away – one-handed because I was carrying my tripod in the other. Garden Variety Nymphs       macro insect photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

I found these cute little bugs hanging around on the zucchini in our garden. These are squash bugs…still in the nymph stage.

I know they are considered garden pests but, to me, they have an enjoyable, almost comical look to them.

This photo makes them look much larger than they really are.

Sunny Delight        flower photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

Everyone loves sunflowers. There is just something about their bright, cheery disposition that even a cloudy day can’t dampen. A full field of them is sheer delight!

We’ve had some dreary, gray days – weather wise – recently. I thought a sunflower image would be a welcome sight. This field of sunflowers was found in our area of rural Kewaunee County, WI.

Glorious Expanse     panorama image by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

My ideal photographic mornings are ones where the sun and clouds come together in concert to create a symphony of comforting color and soothing, natural beauty.  This is one such morning, captured from the Lake Michigan shore at Kewaunee Wisconsin. The colors reflecting off the lake enhance the effect.

This is a panoramic image created by “stitching” together three separate shots.  It’s a technique photographers use to get a wider view than the camera can capture in a single frame. Of course, when you combine high-resolution images, the final image ends up being a much larger file.  That large file size also makes large prints possible. For example, this image is available on my sales page (http://bill-pevlor.pixels.com/featured/glorious-expanse-bill-pevlor.html) to be printed up to 9-feet wide.Wouldn’t t... more »

I don’t post a lot of panorama images because wide images don’t display as well, given the size constraints of most websites – they have to be reduced, and appear quite small. However, if you click on the photo, a larger version stretching the full width of your screen will appear.

Evening at Pabst       cityscape by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

An early evening view of the historic, Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin under a deepening night sky.

I finally got around to processing it.  I took this awhile ago, when a Milwaukee area photographer friend showed me around the downtown area…after an enjoyable meal at Jackson’s, the restaurant located in the lower left corner of the Pabst building.

There’s some great detail in this image, which can be seen more clearly in the larger view you’ll see if you click on the photo.

Cloudy Colored Water        landscape photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

On the road between Kewaunee and Algoma, you will pass through Alaska, WI. This small spot on the map has a nine-hole golf course and two small lakes – Alaska East and West.

This is an image from Alaska West. I stopped there one day on my way from Kewaunee to Algoma. The clouds were somewhat expressive and I wondered if I could get a good reflection of them on the calm lake.

I posted a nearly identical black and white photo, on my website, of the same scene titled, "Cloudy Water." My wife and I debated over which was the better image…b&w or color. I thought I’d settled on one but, as I compare them again while creating this post, I’m not so sure.

Flitting Among the Asters      butterfly photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

On a warm summer day, this monarch butterfly was enjoying the weather and the wildflowers.

This was in a vacant field in the middle of an urban area. The warm sun and abundance of wildflowers were attracting a number of butterflies. Of course, they attracted me and my camera.

My goal was to capture the butterflies in flight. Not difficult to do with the number of butterflies in the area.  The difficult part was to capture them close up and in focus. They fly erratically, up and down and every direction. Thankfully, with today’s modern digital cameras, you can snap hundreds of photos (if needed) without the expense of photo development to find the right shot.

Pere Marquette Park Gazebo       night photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

Calm prevails over the Pere Marquette Park gazebo in the heart of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This was taken on a calm, evening stroll along the Riverwalk.

Spending time in Milwaukee recently, I was able to join a photographer friend for a little night photography. I don’t often get into the big city, so it was fun to capture big city lights. I thought this image was best suited for a monochrome treatment. I hope you think so too.

Glimpse of Heaven      lighthouse skyscape by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

When people learn that I often get up and out while it’s still dark to try and photograph a sunrise, they think I’m a little kooky.

When I capture a scene like this and look around to see I’m the only one there to experience it, I think the rest of the world is a little kooky.

On this particular morning, as the sun began to rise, a small opening appeared in the sky over the Sturgeon Bay, WI lighthouse. Lake Michigan seas were calm that morning.

Angling in a Fog monochrome photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

A lone fisherman waits in a fog for the first bite. He’s fishing for salmon or trout in the waters of Lake Michigan from the pier in Algoma, Wisconsin.

This photo was taken in August of 2012. I went to the Algoma, WI harbor to, hopefully, capture a sunrise. When I got there, conditions were foggy. There wasn’t much to see, but I did notice this lone fisherman on the pier. I thought, with the foggy condition, it could make an interesting image, so I took several photos. I never got closer to the subject than you see here.

When I got home, I looked over the results of the morning, picked this photo as the best effort and posted it to my blog.

At the end of march, I received email from a woman interested in this photo, who knew the fisherman in the photograph. She had married into the fisherman’s family shortly after this photo was taken. She was contacting me because the fisherman’s son had stumbled upon this image somewhere on the internet and knew it was his father.

I didn’t know who the fisherman was. I never got close enough to ask so I wondered how the son was so sure. He was positive because, this was his father’s fishing spot – he was always there and, even though it was only a silhouette, the outline was unmistakable.

It turns out I knew the fisherman, too. He was a former Algoma High School classmate of mine, Dale Kintopf. I hadn’t had any contact with Dale in many years, but I remembered him well. He was one of the good guys.

Now, the heart-tugging part. Dale passed away, unexpectedly, last November. My eyes are welling with tears as I write this, thinking about his children experiencing the first Father’s Day…without their father.

I’m thankful I happened to be at the Algoma harbor on a foggy Saturday morning in August…with my camera. I’m glad the family found this image and that it will always serve as a poignant memory of the proud father, loving husband and true friend Dale was to those who knew him.

Let me wrap this up with a quote from Dale’s obituary: “Dale’s greatest joy in life was the time he spent fishing at the pier in Algoma, he took great pride in his catch and he looked forward to deer hunting season every year as well. He enjoyed vacationing with his family and friends. Dale was a loving husband, proud father of his two sons and the way he lived his life will be carried out through them.”

You can see more of my notes from this shot and another behind-the-scenes post on my website: http://popsdigital.com/?s=angling+in+the+fog

Bluebird Family Outing      bird photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

These are Eastern Bluebirds perched on a stump in our backyard. We have bluebird nest boxes at several locations around our rural home. Each spring we watch, expectantly, for them to return, build their nests and raise their young.

The three birds with the speckled plumage are the young ones. They were attracted to the stump by a treat of mealworms we offered on a regular basis. We love watching them and their progress from hatchlings to fledglings…until they head south for the winter.

Feeding them mealworms on a regular basis creates a location where I can set up my camera and capture some good images.  This photo was taken with my camera on a tripod ten to 15 feet away from the stump.  I was actually in my house, watching out the window, snapping the photos with a wireless remote.

EAA Fireworks – 2013       fireworks photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

It’s no secret, especially to those who follow my work, I like fireworks. This is one of my favorite fireworks photos.

The fireworks are pretty cool, but my favorite part are the people watching. The people are my favorite part because of where they are. If you look closely, you’ll notice airplanes parked among the people.

This is a view from the fireworks display at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s 2013 AirVenture – held every year in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Exotic Flavor        flower photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

It’s easy to get lost in a crowd, but the truly unique are easy to spot. I found this lovely example in the tulips of the annual Tulip Festival in Pella, IA.

Superior Rock Collection       photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

On a summer trip to the shore of Lake Superior, a few years ago, we had the opportunity to wade through the clear, icy cold waters.

This is a collection of colorful rocks in the shallow water near the Wisconsin shore of Lake Superior. I love the lines of light, created by the sun shining through the ripples in the water, that give a different contour to the rocks.

I used this as my desktop wallpaper for a long time and always thought it would be a challenging image for a large puzzle.

To see more of the detail, click on the image to view the larger version.

Morning Rolls In     lighthouse photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

The waves were rolling in, just before the sun was to rise over Lake Michigan.  I captured this view of the lighthouse and pier from the beach at Kewaunee, Wisconsin.

Most mornings the lake is calm, but recent windy conditions kicked up a bit of surf. This was taken last Sunday morning.

Flourish of Gray        monochrome photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

This is a close-up look at the center of a poppy. The tissue-paper-like texture of the poppy petals make an interesting frame for the flower’s center.

This bloom started as a very bright red. I decided to take a different turn and make it a black and white image.

Break of Dawn (vintage)        monochrome landscape by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

This is an image that dates back a few years. It’s a digitally enhanced version of one of my most popular images – Break of Dawn. (See it in my Landscapes to Live For Collection here: https://plus.google.com/113684854375405108383/posts/BXj2zXH8Gjd) The original is a wonderful color image. It would be my favorite of the two, but I also like the aged look this one receives from the monochrome and textured effects.

The Girl with Golden Locks     child portrait by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

This photo was mostly an accident…something I just stumbled into. Didn’t realize what I had until I was browsing through a batch of photos from the day. The sweet, little girl in the big field grabbed my attention.

I cropped the original, tweaked the contrast and exposure, enhanced the colors, added an effect to soften the foreground and background…and found an image I love.

If it appeals to you, by all means, share it with others.

Serene Sunset      sunset landscape photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

This was one of those, “Hey, Beautiful, where have you been all my life?” moments.

I’ve been working my way through my photo files and stumbled upon this one. I took this 4 years ago and, somehow, forgot about it. There must have been something else I was working on that diverted my attention.

This was taken in the farm field across the road from my house. There was an interesting fog moving in as the sun was setting behind the tree line. I’ve photographed that big tree a lot, because it’s the only thing around that I can add to the foreground of my sunset photos.

All of the photos I post are available for purchase. If you'd like to buy one, visit my website or contact me for digital purchase and licensing options. See my website post of this particular imagehere: http:/... more »

Ladies In White         flower photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

The muted sunlight coming from behind these white tulips gave the flowers a unique quality. These early spring beauties were photographed at Pella, Iowa. Each year Pella has a tulip festival.

Boardwalk in the Fog         monochrome photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

This was not the image I was going for. I left home very early, hoping to catch a sunrise over Lake Michigan on a Sunday morning. The sun was scheduled to rise at 6:07 am. I showed up at the beach around 5:55 am. As you can see, the sun didn’t keep it’s end of the bargain.

It only looks like a nighttime shot. This photo was actually taken shortly after “sunrise.” It is a view of the boardwalk that runs along Crescent Beach in Algoma, WI.

The Beeline      nature photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

Beeline (noun) 1. direct, straight course.  2. To move swiftly in a direct, straight course.

One of my “quests” a few summers ago was to capture a bee in flight. They’re small, quick and erratic. Hard to catch in focus. To that point, none of my efforts had come close to what I would deem, “successful.”

The image above is one of the best I’ve managed…and it was by accident. (That happens more than I might like to admit.)

I was taking photos around a flower bed beside our house. While I was changing camera settings, I accidentally pressed the shutter button. A that exact moment, a bee happened to be zipping into the frame…and voilá.

If I were trying for it, I wouldn’t try in black and white, but looking at this, I really like the intensity it creates. Thebee – with his straigh... more »

Daisy in the Dark        flower photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

One delicate bloom holding it’s own against the relentless, encroaching darkness.

This is a daisy growing wild in our yard. Of course, when I took the photo it wasn’t dark. The image you see is the result of “processing.”
