Florida’s Governor, Rick "Beezlebub" Scott Signs Business-Backed Bill Banning Paid Sick Leave
Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) signed a bill on Friday that blocks local governments from implementing paid sick leave legislation, the Orlando Sentinel reports. He made his decision quickly, only taking four of the 15 days he legally had to review the bill before he signed it.
In signing the bill, Scott sided with big business interests including Disney World, Darden Restaurants (owner of Olive Garden and Red Lobster), and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. The bill is part of a national effort to pass so-called “preemption bills” that would block paid sick leave legislation and is a model American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) bill, a right-wing group that coordinates conservative laws across states.
The state’s House Majority Leader, Steve P... more »

Yesterday's Sun, in H-alpha light. A lot of active areas are appearing in the SE quadrant, so far with few and weak flares.

Meet Alex, the first "+Sesame Street" Muppet to have a dad in jail.
Are you surprised that the children’s show is tackling incarceration? (Consider this first: 1 in 28 children in the U.S. currently has a parent behind bars.)

Depicting the Colors of Space
"The Cat’s Eye Nebula — a dying star in the constellation Draco — may appear in images in psychedelic shades of pink and green or in soothing tones of beige and aquamarine. But scientists apply more than artistic license when it comes to assigning colors to distant cosmic bodies that are telescopically photographed."

I got off at Wynyard station last Friday morning so I could get a 'selfie' next to my photo on the bus shelter
Luckily there was a cleaner there who I asked to take this pic for me Unfortunately he shook a bit (no doubt with excitement) so the pic isn't very sharp. Might have to go back for a replay :)
So amazing seeing my images on ad boards throughout Sydney and Melbourne!

A 5-year-old girl who set up a lemonade stand across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., on Friday raised more than $10,000 in the name of peace. Active soldiers stationed at Fort Riley military base came by on motorcycles and hung out to show their support.

"Less than 1% of our population is fighting our country's wars, so the promises we make to our soldiers must be kept." - Rachel Maddow
The percentage doesn't matter; there is no excuse for not honoring every promise and doing everything possible to make them whole again.

Scientists have recently discovered a cache of stone tools in South Africa which they have dated to 71,000 years ago, which is earlier than previously thought. This may lead to a reassessment of the development of human cognition because many have argued that the development of complex cognition and culture occurred well after the development of modern anatomical features that made the former possible.
