What do you do when you screw up?

Oops!  My bad.  I was wrong about that.  I looked it
_up, and let me tell you what I just found out... _

Every once in a while, I'll do what I call "falling down a rabbit hole" and find an interesting thing to read that makes me think.

Usually this happens when I click on a link and then another and another (I'm actually surprised my computer doesn't get more viruses, given this habit of being overly curious about too many things).

Anyway, I clicked on a link in another social network and it referenced something and I looked that up and clicked on yet another link and found this:

As a teacher, I was particularly interested in points 1 and 2 of this list.

The Sun emitted a mid-level flare, peaking at 3:16 a.m. EDT on April 11, 2013.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. This disrupts the radio signals for as long as the flare is ongoing, anywhere from minutes to hours.

This flare is classified as an M6.5 flare, some ten times less powerful than the strongest flares, which are labeled X-class flares. M-class flares are the weakest flares that can still cause some space weather effects near Earth. This flare produced a radio blackout that has since subsided. The blackout was categorized as an R2 on a scale between R1 and R5 on NOAA’s space weather scales.

This is the strongestf... more »

The Recycled Orchestra
Caetura (Paraguay)

"The world sends us garbage, we send back music" Favio Chávez, Director

Cateura, Paraguay is a town essentially built on top of a landfill. Garbage collectors browse the trash for sellable goods, and children are often at risk of getting involved with drugs and gangs. When music teacher Fabio set up a music program for the kids of Cateura, they soon have more students than they have instruments.

That changed when Szaran and Fabio were brought something they had never seen before: a violin made out of garbage. Today, there’s an entire orchestra of assembled instruments, now called The Recycled Orchestra.

The moon is smaller than you thought it was

Redditor BoredBoarder8 was having trouble comprehending exactly how big the moon actually was. To help himself understand he created this image, pasting the United States onto the moon. I gotta say, either the moon is smaller than I thought it was or the United States is bigger. Regardless I was pretty surprised to see this.
