Joe Cocker is celebrating his 69th birthday today. Joe has had great success covering songs by The Beatles where he gives them completely different arrangements. Joe has had hits with "I'll Cry Instead", "With a Little Help From My Friends" and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window".
For "I'll Cry Instead" and "With a Little Help From My Friends", the guy playing guitar is Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page.
Happy Birthday Mr. Cocker!!

“I was onstage with Led Zeppelin at Kezar Stadium, and there were some white doves in cages that were to be released at the end of ‘Stairway.’ When the signal was given to release them, out they went …but one circled for a moment and flew right into Robert Plant’s hands. Robert was the prince of peace, the golden god, and this photo would look ridiculous with anybody else holding the bird. Any other male, that is.” - James Fortune (Photographer)

42 years ago today, May 17, 1971, Paul and Linda McCartney released their album "Ram". While legal action was taking place in Britain's High Court with the dissolution of The Beatles partnership, following their break-up the year before, Ram was the second of two albums McCartney released between quitting The Beatles and forming Wings.
One of the singles released that was on Ram was the American number 1 hit "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey".
It just doesn't seem like 42 years.

Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, turns 65 years old today. He was originally christened Brian Peter George Eno. Professionally he is known as Brian Eno or simply as Eno.
He joined the band Roxy Music as synthesizer player in the early 1970s. Roxy Music's success in the glam rock scene came quickly, but Eno soon tired of touring and of conflicts with lead singer Bryan Ferry.
Eno's solo music has explored more experimental musical styles and ambient music. It has also been extremely influential, pioneering ambient and generative music, innovating production techniques, and emphasising "theory over practice". He also introduced the concept of chance music to popular audiences, partially through collaborations with other musicians.
Eno has also worked as an in... more »

Life's Scales and Intervals
tl;dr executive summary: Is there a similarity between how we hear music and how we perceive life? Both take place in time.
Is it possible that people who suffer from manic depression or bipolar disorder, or even just the generally anguished view life's small (scalar = daily) events as overwhelming, rather than using the scalar to compensate for the intervallic ones. In music, a scale is often, but not always, a series of small steps, while an interval is often, but not always, a larger step. So while the day to day is in a sense, a scale, the biggies like job loss or death (negative) and promotion, graduation with honors (positive) are intervallic.
Can the scalar be used to pull up from the negative intervallic as well as keeping us "down to earth" as a balance for the positive.

If he was still with us, George Carlin would have been celebrating his 76th birthday today. George won five Grammy Awards for his comedy albums. He was famous for his black humor as well as his thoughts on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and various taboo subjects. Carlin and his "Seven Dirty Words" comedy routine were central to the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a 5–4 decision by the justices affirmed the government's power to regulate indecent material on the public airwaves.
The first of his 14 stand-up comedy specials for HBO was filmed in 1977. From the late 1980s, Carlin's routines focused on socio-cultural criticism of modern American society. He often commented on contemporary political issues in the United States and satirized the excesses of A... more »

Steve Winwood is celebrating his 65th birthday today. Steve first came to fame as a member of the Spencer Davis Group ("Gimme Some Lovin'", "I'm A Man", "Keep On Running"). Spencer Davis says "he found himself one night in a dark, little back room and hears a boy of 15 who is playing the piano like Oscar Peterson and singing like Ray Charles." He recognized immediately that Steve Winwood was something special. But, as Spencer is fond of saying, the important thing was that they had similar record collections.” Spencer Davis’ discovery of Steve Winwood’s immense talent is a defining moment in rock history.
After the Spencer Davis Group, Steve was a key member of Traffic, Blind Faith and Ginger Baker's Air Force before he started his solo career.
