A thing I'm enjoying.
"Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and National Geographic Fellow Paul Salopek is retracing on foot our ancestors’ migration out of Africa and across the globe. His 21,000-mile odyssey begins in Ethiopia and ends seven years later at the tip of South America."

He started the walk in January 2013 in Herto Bouri, Ethiopia. He's now crossing the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait to Arabia.

+Jamie Sue posted the following Actual Play report of my nanogame Valiant Girls! Thanks Jamie!

"Kate and I played this Saturday morning.  It's a $2 PDF nanogame RPG, 2-4 players, and about half an hour.  You play a clever, strong, and loved Ethiopian girl.  I don't know much about Ethiopia so I watched a Yegna music video someone posted and google'd female names to start playing.

We actually kept our first game kind of generic and really wholesome.  You start the game by grabbing a nearby image to describe the situation.  We had artwork of a lone cottage in the woods, so we decided we were playing two very young girls (Jazarah and Kalile) who were pretending to run away from home.

Our characters found a house while straying off the path.  As we explored the location, we used successes to determine what we hoped to find versus what we fearedfinding. ... more »

Ehy guys, that's a great change in my life, I got a fantastic job, with a real powerful contract.
For the first time in my life I'm really emancipated, and I wanna share all my happyness with all of you!

To celebrate this I will offer my masterpiece, the story game RavenDeath, for free until the 20th of may.

This is the condition, if you wanna take it, you have to share to the world an Actual Play of the first game with it, possibly within two month.

RavenDeath it's a game that helps you to create a vendetta story, like Kill Bill, the Crow, Slevin, the Count of Monte Cristo. Good stuff, believe me!

The Sundered Land: a Doomed Pilgrim in the Ruins of the Future
I'm a warrior seeking peace and an end to bloodshed. I'm on pilgrimage across the Sundered Land to the Temple To No Gods in the distant City of Gulls. My pilgrimage has brought me to the edge of the Gray Hills, and the uneasy boundary between the Zo and the Ixti, warring clans of cannibals. My goal is to pass safely through and continue my pilgrimage.

2. If you don't know the answer, make one up.
3. Keep your answers short.

+tony dowler's seriously cool map of Post-Seatle arrive over the weekend. We poured over it and the guide-book, which are both beautiful. Our 13 year old wanted a key to the icons in the guide-book - maybe he just didn't find them? Most of them look pretty self-explanatory or understandable-from-context. All in all, this is cool enough that if Tony decides to do another one of some other city, I'll buy it.

Lyrid Meteor Shower Viewing Tips
from +Elise Andrew of fb.me/Ifeakinglovescience

To answer the most common question: Yes, you can see these meteor showers from ANYWHERE in the sky, provided it’s clear and dark, away from all the city lights.

- The best times to view meteors or typically predawn and late evening. Partially because this is when it is darkest, but also because this is when Earth turns into the path of meteoroids as they enter the atmosphere.

- Meteors are visible with the naked eye and you don’t need any equipment to view them. Just spread a blanket on the ground and look up!

For more information on the Lyrids, see here: http://bit.ly/117qu2G

I was just in Boston for PAX. Watching the state respond to the Boston bombings is variably intense and surreal. Intense because I know all the locations that are in the news - the marathon route, MIT, Cambridge, Watertown - and surreal because it's two hours away from me.

+Marshall Miller is working on a PbtA game that I'm really intrigued by. In Lapins & Lairs, you play rabbits. Like Watership Down rabbits. You make your rabbits, your warren and the world they live in. There are some really interesting things going on with how the world is built. I've started a game and I'm really looking forward to playing again. Maybe even today. Further write-up as warranted.

Work in progress. It's very odd cutting up perfectly good clothes. It goes against my thrifty nature, yet it appeals deeply to my sense of "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without". My very first quilt block was made from the scraps leftover from my Mom making me a dress.

Using old clothes to make a quilt is steeped in long tradition. Some of these t-shirts are so old and tattered that they really need the stabilization of the backing. That feels fine.. The thing is, some of these are so new. They are things Jelalludin bought and wore in the last year of his life. It feels very final, this almost ritual tearing of my dead friend's clothes. I find myself singing the songs we sang together last summer. It's an unexpected blessing. I offered to do this for Beth, as a way to comfort her, but it is touching me more than I expected.

I find myself thinking of... more »

Tonight I'm working on a memorial quilt for a friend. Going through a dead man's clothes and making aesthetic decisions about how to use them in a quilt for his widow is very strange. Good, but strange.

The competition for tech in this house keeps getting higher. But when my seven-year old looks at me with big eyes and says "but I want to watch Neil Degrasse Tyson on NOVA Now while I color,, and I've already eaten breakfast", what am I going to do? Say "No astrophysics for you"? I don't think so.

My 13 year old just used his birthday gift to make a foot-operated WASD pad to play a weird mash-up of Minecraft and DDR. This makes us both super happy. It was fun to see his idea go from inspiration to schematic to execution to trouble-shooting to play over the course of an hour.
