Daria Musk3,763,578*Expand to read the story and learn how to join live!* Three years ago to the day, I stood in front of my computer - a guitar in my hands, songs in my heart, fingers trembling - about to press a button that said, "Hangout". I was still waterlogged with rainy nights of lugging my amps into tiny clubs and tears from the not-knowing-what-would-happen to my dreams. That night, when I hit "Hangout" you saved my dreams, you saved me. Your faces popped in. We sang all night. Six hours later my heart was six million times bigger and I would never be the same. Good article and information. See which of of your appliances drains the most electricity. To start with use LED bulbs that'll cut down electricity charges in a hurry.

Estimating daily consumption of electricity
(No, you cannot 'power your home' by one hour of cycling daily)

In the past days an article had popped up in my social media streams again and again - claiming that you could power your home by cycling for one hour.
No, you cannot - and I am excluding heating and cooling anyway. I have shared a Youtube demo some time ago: A professional athlete with enormous thighs can cycle at a few 100 Watts for some minutes and just beat a toaster (500-1000W). So an average person cannot cycle at more that 100-200W for one hour, delivering 0,2kWh during that hour at best.
With that energy you can e.g. power a 20W notebook or light bulb for 10 hours and that's it.
Anything with rotating parts like pumps or washing machines or appliances for cutting or mixing need much more power than that, usually a few 100W. A TV set needs typically at least 150W, so you might just be able to power it while watching. An electric stove or a water heater need about 2kW peak power, at at half of the maximum they would consume 1kWh in one hour.

I'll not link that click-bait article but an excellent website instead: Here you can estimate your daily consumption, by picking all your appliances from a list. Typical power is indicated. At least it should give you some feeling for the numbers, to be compared with the utility bill, and to identify the most important suckers for energy.

Energy needed in kWh = Power in Watts times hours divided by 1000

She told me that my two-year-old, three-foot-tall son, Abraham, walked up to a woman in a hijab and asked “What’s your name?” The woman told him her name. Then he put out his little hand and said, “Nice to meet you!” Everyone laughed, and he smiled. He shared with her his firmest handshake, like I taught him."

If you've a dishwasher it's a must read.

Dishwashers 101: Why does my dishwasher take so long?

One of the common questions I run into on dishwasher service calls is about the duration of the cleaning cycle. A modern dishwasher (manufactured in the last decade or so) will run for roughly 90 minutes for a normal cleaning cycle. If the cycle includes heat drying it will typically go for at least 2 hours. Some modern dishwashers include an Express or "One Hour" cycle that will run for 60-70 minutes.

What can affect how long a dishwasher runs? The first thing that can affect the length of the cycle is using add-ons. Choosing "Pots & Pans" or "Super Scrubber" or "Heavy Duty" will add 15-45 minutes to the wash cycle. If you want a faster cycle and you don't need the add-ons, don't use them.

The second thing that can affect the length of the cycle is water temperature. As you might recall from my previous post, dishwashers should be using water that is between 120°F and 150°F. If the water temperature is below 120°F the dishwasher will pause, turn on its heating element, and heat the water to at least 120°F before continuing with the cycle. A modern dishwasher will pause and check the temperature of the water at least twice in the cycle. If it has to heat the water each pause to do so will last 10-15 minutes. You can see how this can quickly add 20-30 minutes to your dishwasher cycle.

A third factor in the length of the dishwasher cycle is how dirty the water is. In the industry this is called the turbidity (cloudiness) of the water. If your dishes are really dirty the water will be really dirty. A dishwasher will spray water then check the turbidity of the water being collected in the drain. If that water is dirty, the dishwasher knows the dishes aren't clean and it should continue spraying them with water. After that spray cycle ends the dishwasher will drain and then spray more water. If it checks that water and it's still dirty it will run for another wash cycle. This will keep going until it senses the water is clean. This process can also add another 20 minutes to an hour to your dishwasher cycle. Please note: You can also get a "false positive" from the turbidity sensor if you prewash your dishes in dishwashing liquid. Doing so will create suds inside the dishwasher that will trick the turbidity sensor into thinking the dishes are still dirty. Don't prewash.

I've had some customers tell me their dishwasher ran for 3 hours and this shocked them. This can easily happen with the temperature checks and turbidity checks. In every case I've had the water temperature has been too low. Water that feels hot to the skin may not be hot enough for the dishwasher. Use a thermometer. ___If you've a dishwasher it's a must read.

Republicans Extending "Ag-Gag" Laws to Nursing Homes and Veterans Care Facilities

Under laws proposed by Republican legislatures, it would be a crime for you to videotape a nursing home abusing your mother in order to report the crime. Seriously.

"Anyone who violates the law — say, by secretly taping abuses of elderly patients or farm animals and then sharing the recording with the media or an advocacy group — can be sued by business owners for bad publicity and be required to pay a fine of $5,000 for each day that person is gathering information or recording without authorization."

Ironically, this law appears to make filming the Planned Parenthood fetal-parts-videos a crime. ___The politicians in NC pass only such trivial legislations nothing to help the poor or the middle class or the small businesses. We need a good organ donation system like the one in Sri Lanka. Not just for the eyes but for other organs too.

Sri Lanka leading the way in eye donations

Other countries should follow the lead.

"The late Hudson Silva began this process in 1964, by packing a few eyes into an ice-filled thermos flask normally used for tea, and having them carried by hand on a flight to Singapore.

In 2014, his Society exported 2,551 corneas, including 1,000 to China, 850 to Pakistan, 250 to Thailand, and 50 to Japan.

The country's emergence as a major donor of corneas is largely down to Silva's dynamism. He made his first appeal for eye donations as a student in 1958, in a newspaper article co-authored with his wife and mother, urging Sri Lankans to "give life to a dead eye". The first corneas he received, the following year, he stored in his own refrigerator "along with the eggs and butter". Then in 1960 his mother died and it's said that Silva won the nation's heart by grafting her corneas on to the eyes of a poor farmer, and restoring his sight."

Good article.

The gif ... creates a false impression
.. because it seems to imply that the simplicity of the heliocentric system makes its an obvious choice over the geocentric model but as should be obvious from my description of what you actually see as an observer on the earth, and all observers in the past were on the earth, making that choice is anything but simple or obvious.

Honor killing.

My column tells the story behind an Oscar-nominated film, about a girl who tried to prosecute her father for attempting to murder her. And there are lessons here for all of us!___Honor killing.

German forest ranger finds that trees have social networks too

Wonders of nature.

“These trees are friend...You see how the thick branches point away from each other? That’s so they don’t block their buddy’s light.”

Before moving on to an elderly beech to show how trees, like people, wrinkle as they age, he added, “Sometimes, pairs like this are so interconnected at the roots that when one tree dies, the other one dies, too.”

Neat experiment by the Japanese scientist. One of my friends' mom used to do the same thing whenever she was in the garden used to talk to the plants, they used to grow well in a small plot. She used to say they've lives too.

What does a parrot know about PTSD?

Good article, animals seem to have more empathy than humans.

"Their spirit gives me the will to get up and do it another day. They’re all victims here. Kind of like what the veterans have been through, in a way...They don’t belong in captivity...But they have a real survivor’s mentality. These forgotten great beams of light that have been pushed aside and marginalized. I see the trauma, the mutual trauma that I suffered and that these birds have suffered, and my heart just wants to go out and nurture and feed and take care of them, and doing that helps me deal with my trauma. All without words.’’

After I lived in Norway, America Felt Backward

"Four years on, thinking I should settle down, I returned to the United States. It felt quite a lot like stepping back into that other violent, impoverished world, where anxiety runs high and people are quarrelsome. I had, in fact, come back to the flip side of Afghanistan and Iraq: to what America’s wars have done to America. Where I live now, in the homeland, there are not enough shelters for the homeless. Most people are either overworked or hurting for jobs; the housing is overpriced, the hospitals crowded and understaffed, the schools largely segregated and not so good. Opioid or heroin overdose is a popular form of death, and men in the street threaten women wearing hijabs. Did the American soldiers I covered in Afghanistan know they were fighting for this?"
