#MetallicMonday1,128I meant to do this for a while, but finally thought about doing it enough in advance this week ;) So anyway to get to the point. I think it is long overdue that the page gets a decent cover photo. While I can try to take one myself I thought it'd be a lot more fun if we make it an event and then decide which to use. So anyway if you have a photo, which you think would fit, and don't mind me using as a cover of course, then just put a link in the comments here - or add it to the event .. although I think if you "normally" share with the page and #MetallicMonday  and put a link to the post in the comments here it probably makes more sense.#MetallicMonday needs a cover photo2013-05-26 12:00:0052

Gorka Ortiz70,387I'd like to invite you all to this brand new Photography Contest. The rules are simple, you are kindly suggested to upload up to 3 pictures of your own. The pictures must show yourself in a reflection. No matter whether your reflection is shown through a mirror, a window, some water on the road or any surface that can reflect yourself. There is no need to be recognized in your picture, you can reflect any part of your body. Try to find funny surfaces or elements where you can be reflected and just have fun taking part! ;-) Who will be the winners? Ok, trying to be fair no matter how many followers, plusses or shares you have and also taking into account your kind suggestions,  I have decided to invite 2 or 3 photographers from my circles who I think they produce quality pictures to help me judge the best works. The contest will end the 4th of November this year 2012. I will create a circle of winners with the 10 best photographers in this contest and I will share it in my stream. (Sorry, I know is not much but is better than nothing I guess and there's nothing else I can offer! ;-)  ). Of course I am opened to any suggestion from you all to make the contest as fair as possible. ;-) Finally, the most important thing... have fun and enjoy taking your pictures and sharing them with us! ;-) Cheers!Photography Contest - My Reflection - By Gorka Ortiz.2012-10-04 19:00:00132

Summer Photos4,880Welcome to the first @103529133170854326880 event! Add your photos of the week under #SummerPhotos  theme and give plusses to other entries. In the end of the week I'll make a public post on the page to salute the photographer who has gathered most plusses :) Let's try if events would work better than tagging on a @104772045073519492155 page like ours. If so, we could have consecutive events collecting a week's or month's photos. This experiment was encouraged by @113686253941057080055 's kind comments, see   https://plus.google.com/103529133170854326880/posts/91smN1sNRtq Have fun! This is the fourth and final image from my session at Siletz Bay during my recent trip along the Oregon coast. I'll now travel slightly north (virtually - the trip already happened) towards Pacific City and Cape Kiwanda before heading back south towards Bandon.

Movement On Pier, Dewey Beach, Delaware, 2014

Just finished this image from my trip down to Rehoboth Beach last year. I love stumbling upon those peaceful little pockets where none of the tourists hang out. This view was accessible from the back side of our motel and it faces into Rehoboth Bay. While everyone else was hanging out at the beach and eating ice cream cones on the boardwalk, I couldn't be more happy looking for photo opportunities in quiet areas like this.

Tagging my favorite theme #minimalmonday  even though it's Thursday. #sorebelious

Cascadia, Yachats, Oregon, 2014

For #minimalmonday  curated by +Olivier Du Tré.

Hello, G+. Long time, no see. I took this photo last year along a gorgeous stretch of the Oregon coast. I named the image 'Cascadia' in honor of the countless scare videos I've watched recently about the impending 8-9.0+ magnitude earthquake that hopefully won't hit the Pacific Northwest during any of our lifetimes.

Northern California, Oregon and Washington are famous for their natural beauty and it's no surprise given there are some serious geological forces at play in the region. Most of the statistics show a high probability of a major eruption in the next 50 years along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The scary thing is that the cities in the area, esp. Portland, aren't sufficiently built to seismic code (they didn't know about earthquakes on thatfa... more »

Most of the statistics show a high probability of a major eruption in the next 50 years along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The scary thing is that the cities in the area, esp. Portland, aren't sufficiently built to seismic code (they didn't know about earthquakes on that fault line until somewhat recently). Ouch!

Since we can't live our lives in fear, we should continue to enjoy our natural surroundings but be aware of the risks (and keep an emergency kit on hand).

I'd suggest reading up on Cascadia here:

There was a recent AMA on it as well:

Or if you're into videos, this is a good one:

And this is a good one too:

Lastly, check out username: 'hugefloods' on YouTube for some really cool geology videos ;P___

His portraits are also out of this world. Cool thing about Michael is that he openly shares a lot of his retouching techniques in written and video form on his website, www.vibrantshot.com.

'Bandon Light Trail' for the 5-day B&W Challenge.

Bandon is an other-worldly place on the southern Oregon coast full of geological marvels. This one, situated on the beach just below the bluffs at Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint, has always been my favorite rock formation. I need to do more research because I'm sure it has a name or story behind it, but it reminds me of a serrated knife. It looks extremely craggy and ominous, especially from the south end - which was my vantage point for this this image. It's like a soldier standing guard between the north and south ends. I'll share a daytime color image of this someday so you can get a better look at the details.

I'll take it, but I think I should chalk it up to beginner's luck given the high caliber of artwork there. If you are looking for serious inspiration, have a browse at www.artlimited.net.

Announcement: #LeadingLinesMonday  Is Coming To A Close

Hey guys, some of you may know - I've been a co-curator of the +Leading Lines Monday theme for about two years now. It was decided today that we will be ending the theme. Announcement: #LeadingLinesMonday  Is Coming To A Close

Hey guys, some of you may know - I've been a co-curator of the +Leading Lines Monday theme for about two years now. It was decided today that we will be ending the theme. We're encouraging participants to share with us their final #leadinglinesmonday  image next week as a grand finale. Bonus points if you can make it Halloween themed!

A huge thanks to +Pam Boling who brought me onboard two years ago and to the rest of the team, +Elle Rogers, +David Murphy, +Michael B. Stuart, and +Andreas Levi, for always having  my back during busy Mondays. You encouraged so many LLM photographers (including myself) with great feedback, week after week. You guys made Google+ a better place.

I also want to thank those who have submitted to the theme over the years. At one time, we had 200-300 submissions per week from you. We saw many inspiring photos and met many friends. I hope that you continue to make great images even after this theme goes away.

For now, I leave you with a color version of "South Beach Terminus" that I made months ago, but originally posted in B&W. It features prominent diagonal lines meant to lead the viewer's eye through the frame. Remember, leading lines are one of many tools you can use in a variety of ways to enhance your composition. I highly encourage you to pick up The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos by Michael Freeman if you're looking to improve your photography. It helped me when I was first starting and to this day is a great resource when I need a refresher.

Like I said before, keep making images and we'll see you next week for the #leadinglinesmonday  grand finale.___

Oh boy, the +STARK Awards results were insanely good!

A few months ago, I submitted a few photos to +Stark-Magazine's first ever photography competition, and the results came in yesterday. I didn't grab any wins or mentions, but as I looked through the winner's gallery in awe, I understood why.

The work on that page is nothing short of phenomenal (you can view it here: www.starkawards.com/2014wi.html). Among the winners and HMs were images by these amazing artists who I'm happy to associate with:
+Volker Birke, +Nathan Wirth, +Gittan Beheydt, +Dennis Ramos, +Sandra Parlow, +Gavin Dunbar, +Olivier Du Tré, +Sairam Sundaresan, +FineartPhotoshots, +Josh Haftel, +Dominique Dubied, +Dermot Russell, +Jarrod Bruner, and Kevin Boyle (who recently stepped away from G+).

Included in that collection of eye candy was this HM by +Moises Levy which is one of the best images I've seen in a long time. This one really gets me going for some reason. Must be the beautifully stark contrast created by that dark pier and whimsically placed rope. All I can do is shake my head when I look at this and many of the other images from that gallery.

EDIT: A few others whose work I love following, but aren't on G+, including Kevin:
► Darren Moore (www.darrenmoorephotography.com):
► Jayanta Roy (500px.com/jayanta)
► Kevin Boyle (kevinboylestudio.com)

Congratulations to all of you guys and a personal thanks to each one of you for inspiring me at different times with your brilliant imagery.

Time for a new profile pic

This was photographed by my fiancée during a fun collaboration session earlier this year. I don't normally post portraits but we got some good ones, so I'll probably share some of them in the near future. I couldn't decide on B&W or color, so I went with color on #Ello  and B&W everywhere else.

Thanks to +Victor Bezrukov, I scored an invite to join the new social network, Ello, yesterday. I'm liking it a lot so far. The design is clean and minimal. It's not feature-rich like G+ or Facebook, but that's what makes it so refreshing. The simplicity allows your posts (whether it be text, images, or a combination) to take center stage.

Come check it out and share your username here so we can build into a solid community!

This image embodies my journey exploring the Oregon coast during my first solo photography trip earlier this year. As I prepare to embark on another seascape adventure in Maine next week, I am drawing on my camera roll for inspiration. I look through the images captured on that trip and I’m reminded of the wonders of the great outdoors, particularly the thrill of standing on a rugged, undeveloped coastline. I can best describe it as feeling like you’ve arrived at the edge of the world, somewhere between the known and unknown. It resonates spiritually, as it forces me to dig deep and contemplate life’s mysteries. The danger, the freedom, the mystique -- it’s all part of why I love to photograph seascapes.

A beautiful photo by the talented +Travis Rhoads. I just love the play of light that gives this such an intimate feel.

Isolation
Botany Bay, South Carolina
September 28, 2014

Yesterday I shared a quick cellphone pano of the scene that was before me on my first ever trip to Botany Bay.  I was there with +Alistair Nicol and +Tommy White for their +Mountains To Sea Workshops  September LE workshop.  It was great to meet them, and get to experience some of the really cool local shooting locations that I had not been to in the area.

But the light was not on our side this weekend...we battled flat gray overcast skies, intermittent rain showers, and for me getting over the mental disappointment that comes from those kind of shooting conditions.

But in the end, I finally got to experience Botany Bay.  What a cool, enchanting, mystical and haunting place...I had ideas of what it would be like, but nothing like what it really is.  The bad light conditions made us think differently, look for different compositions and try to work with the conditions. My mind went minimal.  Very minimal.

For this edit I went for minimal, smooth and clean...I hope it presents that way.  I am open to any and all crits....thanks for looking.

Eliza and Plus One Collection III need your help

Hi everyone, the Saving Eliza campaign and publication of Plus One Collection Volume III could really use your help to reach the required fundraising goal. There's over 2 days left to donate to Eliza's cause and buy a copy of this wonderful book, so please have a look at the source link. Thanks so much!

Announcing Plus One Collection Volume III Fundraising Campaign

It's been a long journey, but we are fully focused on this now, and want to get the latest version of the #PlusOneCollectionIII book into your hands before Christmas. To help us get there, we created an Indiegogo crowdsourcing campaign that will provide us with the funds needed to publish the book.

All the details are here - http://igg.me/at/plus-one-collection-iii/x/2020311

We also created a video explaining our project. You can find it here - Plus One Collection, Volume III

We hope you can help up in two ways - first, contribute the funds for the book by picking one of the perks offered there. Second, please help us spread the word! Share the news here, share the news to your friends and family on other social networks and email. Share, share, share!

We set a goal to raise $30,000 in the next 30 days. We know it's a lofty one, but it will allow us to do two things - publish and ship the book to all campaign sponsors, and raise $5,000-10,000 for our charitable cause, Eliza O'Neill.

The campaign is a fixed goal campaign, meaning, we do need to meet the goal of $30,000 before we receive any funds and can print the book.

I know many of you who contributed photographs to the book want to know if your photo made it. We're still working on the selection, and will announce the list of contributing artists next week. Stay tuned!

But in the meantime, we're happy to announce that the book publication process is back on track and with your help, let's make it happen and help Eliza!___Eliza and Plus One Collection III need your help

I'm honored to be part of a great project!

I just learned that "Among Gods" was selected to be published in the newest Plus One Collection photography book. Pretty sweet news heading into the weekend, but what's even sweeter is knowing that the proceeds from the sale of the book are going towards the Save Eliza fund.

Eliza is a 4 year old girl who suffers from a rare degenerative disease known as Sanfilippo Syndrome that will prevent her from reaching her teen years if a cure is not found. You can learn about the project and contribute to the campaign here: http://goo.gl/i3ZH0D

The book, as many of you here know, will be stunning. I own the first two volumes and I'm blown away each time I browse through the pages. It's a great honor to once again be part of such a very cool project.

Among Gods
Symons State Park, Oceanside, OR

This is the leading image of a new series I'm working on that will consist of coastal monoliths photographed during my trip to Oregon last week. As with much of my recent work, I used many of the techniques I'm learning in +Joel Tjintjelaar's B&W masterclass - which are amazing.

I have to say, this was the first time I actively thought about design and vision when taking and post-processing a photo. Big thanks to Joel for that. Joel also suggested that I pick a specific focus of subject, style, or genre to practice on, so you will definitely see some recurring themes in the upcoming series. If you like a combination of dark, mythical, mystical, and magical, stay tuned!

Well, +Steve-Maxx landeros hit me with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge today. If you haven't seen his video, it's great. See here: http://goo.gl/dsZpgS

In response to Steve's challenge, I donated a few bucks and nominated some friends/family as well as the following: +Jaycee Crawford, +Ralph Mendoza, +Dennis Ramos, and +Nathan Wirth. You're up! As per the rules, you guys have 24 hours to either donate whatever you can to ALS research or film an ice bucket video of your own. More than anything, this thing is about awareness, so whatever you can do to spread the word about ALS will be greatly appreciated by those who suffer from this horrible disease.

I have some links that give insight as to how devastating this disease is (they're short videos):

Hey guys, remember Plus One Collection Vol. III?

It's on track as long as we can raise $30k during the next month. Please spread the word, or contribute to the Indiegogo campaign if you have the funds to help. No need to worry - funds will only be collected at the end of the month if the $30k target is met, so we're all in this together.

August is coming... no, not that August!

I was super thrilled when I learned two weeks ago that I was invited to join August (www.agst.co/), the new social media platform for artists and art lovers, by way of +Nathan Wirth's recommendation (thank you, Nathan! I'm infinitely honored.).

August promises to connect content creators with consumers, fans, and collectors of artistic media in an exciting way that does not exist in today's social media sphere. As an aspiring (and struggling) artist, I can tell you that this addresses a core problem. Most of my audience consists of fellow-artists, and while I love feeding off their creativity and knowledge, I would ultimately like to reach a broader audience with my work. As an aspiring (and struggling) artist, I can tell you that this addresses a core problem. Most of my audience consists of fellow-artists, and while I love feeding off their creativity and knowledge, I would ultimately like to reach a broader audience with my work. I'm sure this same crux applies to most of the mere mortals on G+ who don't have upwards of 1MM followers :) Even you guys with 1MM+ followers can probably attest to my suspicion that most of your followers aren't truly interested in art.

The vision for August is to have a place where people can go to discover, exclusively, a good film, painting, photograph, piece of music, or literary work without the distraction of cat memes, food photos, and selfies. The team at August has been conceptualizing and developing this platform for the past 6 years and based on my conversations with co-creator, +Sean Wing, they are serious about making this work. It'll be both web and mobile, and if it takes off, it has the potential to be a game changer.

To all my fellow artists on here, I hope that you'll check out the site and share the word with your audiences. Whether you're trying to monetize your talent or simply touch people's lives with your work, the product of your passion deserves to be featured and discovered.

You can sign up for the beta release (as either an artist or consumer) here: www.agst.co

Siletz Bay, Study 2, Lincoln City, Oregon

Here's another image from Siletz Bay, just outside of Lincoln City. It was taken during my recent seascape adventure along the central Oregon coast. I absolutely loved this location and could probably spend a couple of weeks staring at these gorgeous rocks.

Hope you enjoy.

kōzu essence

Really pleased to be part of this project and have my story and image featured alongside other great photographers, +Thibault Roland, +Michael Diblicek, +Julia Anna Gospodarou, and Greg Stewart. Kōzu essence is a new multi-platform project by +kozu books that's all about sharing stories and images about inspiration. The write-ups on the site are great and the images are truly inspirational. I can't wait to see some of this stuff in print.

Siletz Bay, Study 1, Lincoln City, Oregon

For #minimalmonday  curated by +Olivier Du Tré.

I'm finally getting around to editing photos from my recent trip along the Oregon coast. This is the first of a few photographs taken during an amazing session in Siletz Bay, just south of Lincoln City.

Have you guys seen Volume 1 of +kozu books yet???
It is AMAZING.

All B&W long exposure, litho printed on 300gsm paper. It features the work of +Jeff Gaydash, +Joel Tjintjelaar, +Michael Diblicek, +Hengki Koentjoro, and a few others I can't tag. The print quality is just fantastic and the shipping was super fast to the United States.

Even if you are familiar with an artist's work (from websites & social media sharing), I encourage you to buy their work in PRINT. Seeing images printed on beautiful paper (especially at such a high level like this) gives you a whole new appreciation. This book is a great way to get your hands on PRINTED work by some of the best B&W fine art photographers around.

I'm loving the latest G+ update for Android. Don't care much for all the auto-awesomeness or whatever, but the improved image quality on mobile devices is seriously AMAZING. I stopped viewing images on my phone for a while because they just looked like crap compared to FB and the regular website, but the images are now looking sharp and clean with lots of pop.

Thank you, Google.
