Google X buys floating wind turbine power company

Google X, the secretive division dedicated to futuristic long-shot projects, is making a new acquisition: Makani Power, a company that develops autonomous airborne wind turbines it believes could provide "kite power." Bloomberg Businessweek first reported the news in a longer piece on Google X, saying the deal was in the process of closing for an unknown amount. According to Bloomberg, Page approved the deal — but only if the team would crash five turbines in the near future. Makani has officially confirmed the deal on its website, and Google has been a longtime investor, backing Makani as early as 2007. Now, the company is one of the only known acquisitions by Google's moonshot wing.

Scanadu is about to release this Star Trek tricorder like device called Scout. The company is based at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

The device works simply by holding it up to your forehead for 10 seconds.

Simply place the Scanadu Scout™ on your forehead for 10 seconds and in a snap, your stats are displayed on your smartphone.

The device can then track and monitor your vital signs. 
It can track temperature, ECG, heart rate, oximetry and stress.

Seven scientists from European universities have independently verified this cold fusion reactor, but it has yet to undergo peer review.

If this turns out to be legit, it could change the world in a big way, very quickly.

IBM's Watson moves from oncology to customer service.

This is very exciting news for anybody who's ever had to speak to a customer service representative about, well, anything.

"Starting in the next few months, IBM will be rolling out with several key customers an “Ask Watson” feature that will greet and offer help through various channels:  Web chats, email, smartphone apps and SMS."

According to IBM, we will start to see the first Watson-powered consumer apps in the second half of this year.

Hangouts, phone calls and Google Voice

Thanks for all of your feedback on last week's Hangouts launch. I wanted to quickly talk about 1) making/receiving phone calls in Gmail, and 2) Google Voice support more generally.

1) Today's version of Hangouts doesn't yet support outbound calls on the web and in the Chrome extension, but we do support inbound calls to your Google Voice number. We're working hard on supporting both, and outbound/inbound calls will soon be available. In the meantime, you can continue using Google Talk in Gmail.

2) Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice, and making/receiving phone calls is just the beginning. Future versions of Hangouts will integrate Google Voice more seamlessly.

The dawn of the era of true artificial intelligence?

Wired talks to new Google neural network mastermind +Geoffrey Hinton about the state of machine learning at Google and his plans to build a trillion-node neural network. 

"When you get to a trillion [parameters], you’re getting to something that’s got a chance of really understanding some stuff.”

I do believe it's highly likely that the first truly human-like artificial intelligence will come out of Google's labs.

Do you think that Google might actually succeed in creating a true AI with this project?

Android 4.2.2 coming to HTC One soon, “Senseless” edition later this summer?

Let's not push those HTC One with stock Android reports off to the side just yet. The latest comes from a famed HTC insider. They report a Senseless version is coming later this summer and that HTC One owners should get 4.2.2 in a few weeks.

If these are true. I really hope this trend continues.

Google and NASA buying $15m quantum computer that can try all possible solutions at the same time and then select the best.

Google wants to use it to find out how quantum computing might advance techniques of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and voice recognition (welcome Skynet... we've been waiting for you). 

Nasa and Google's benchmarks showed that in one case it took less than half a second to do something that took conventional software 30 minutes.

"A classic example of one of these "combinatorial optimisation" problems is that of the travelling sales rep, who needs to visit several cities in one day, and wants to know the shortest path that connects them all together in order to minimise their mileage."

+Udacity, in collaboration with Georgia Tech and AT&T, has just announced the first fully accredited online Masters Degree in Computer Science based on the MOOC format.

Pricing details have not yet been revealed, but are said to be a "fraction of the cost of traditional, on-campus programs."

Do you think we will see other schools follow suit and offer online, MOOC-based Masters programs?

"Separating DNA from bodily fluids is a cumbersome process that’s become a bottleneck as scientists make advances in genome sequencing, particularly for disease prevention and treatment. The market for DNA preparation alone is about $3 billion each year."

Now, engineers from the University of Washington and Bellevue, WA, based company NanoFacture are looking to remove that bottleneck with a clever new way of extracting DNA from fluid samples.

"UW engineers designed microscopic probes that dip into a fluid sample – saliva, sputum or blood – and apply an electric field within the liquid. That draws particles to concentrate around the surface of the tiny probe. Larger particles hit the tip and swerve away, but DNA-sized molecules stick to the probe and are trapped on the surface. There are few things more fascinating in computer science currently than neural networks - computer networks designed to emulate the way the human brain learns.

+YouTube launches paid subscription channels

Starting today, we’re launching a pilot program for a small group of partners that will offer paid channels on YouTube with subscription fees starting at $0.99 per month. Every channel has a 14-day free trial, and many offer discounted yearly rates. For example, Sesame Street will be offering full episodes on their paid channel when it launches. And UFC fans can see classic fights, like a full version of their first event from UFC’s new channel. You might run into more of these channels across YouTube, or look here for a list of pilot channels. Once you subscribe from a computer, you’ll be able to watch paid channels on your computer, phone, tablet and TV, and soon you’ll be able to subscribe to them from more devices.

Microsoft YouTube App Strips Ads and Downloads Videos

Oh, Microsoft. That's not cool. Microsoft has released a Windows Phone app that breaks YouTube's terms of service. The app strips YouTube ads from the video and allows for the app to easily be downloaded, with just the tap of a button.

Google's Chief Internet Evangelist (and co-developer of TCP/IP), Vint Cerf, talks to Wired about the development of the Bundle protocols - a suite of networking protocols designed for use in the Interplanetary Internet - and some of the difficulties involved therein.

Scientists have been searching for a way of controlling a single C60 molecule (commonly known as a buckyball) since their discovery in 1985. 

Now, it seems that researchers from Columbia Engineering have discovered a method to do just that!

This may lead to vastly improved drug delivery methods, as well as having other nanotech and biotech applications.
