Misadventure though it was, the agency's Operation Acoustic Kitty was a visionary idea 50 years ahead of its time.
n the 1960s, the Central Intelligence Agency recruited an unusual field agent: a cat. In an hour-long procedure, a veterinary surgeon transformed the furry feline into an elite spy, implanting a microphone in her ear canal and a small radio transmitter at the base of her skull, and weaving a thin wire antenna into her long gray-and-white fur. This was Operation Acoustic Kitty, a top-secret plan to turn a cat into a living, walking surveillance machine. The leaders of the project hoped that by training the feline to go sit near foreign officials, they could eavesdrop on private conversations.

Why isn't science fiction used more often to teach science in schools?
Among the many things that can be said about science fiction, there's no question about its tremendous entertainment value and ability to convey difficult concepts in a clear and compelling manner. Which is why a pair of researchers from the University of Valencia are urging educators to get their act together and start using science fiction as a way to engage their students and motivate interest in science and technology.
To get a better sense of science fiction's current place in the classroom, researchers Fanny Petit and Jordi Solbes reviewed over 30 compulsory science and technology textbooks for physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and various technology subjects. Hello, G+! I guess, since I'm about to meet a lot of new people, that I should introduce myself to the world, as it were.
I'm Dan, a graphic designer/ sign maker in Chattanooga, TN. I'm mostly known as an R2 builder. My scratch-built droid and I have done over 75 events in the last few years, ranging from movie premiers, Weird Al concerts, Make-A-Wish events, and even weddings!
To give the geek world some keywords on me, I'm into Star Wars, Star Trek (TNG), Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who (Tennant is my Doctor), Walking Dead, Defiance, and the entire gamut of superhero movies. In fact, my youngest son is named Kal-el.

The 'Carbon bubble'
This could get awkward. We need to stop burning fossil fuels to avoid the risk of dangerous climate change. But limiting the amount we can burn will take a chunk out of the global economy.
A non-binding international agreement is in place to try to limit global warming to 2 °C. If it is to be honoured, we can only burn about a quarter of the planet's existing fossil fuel reserves. A new report from the Carbon Tracker Initiative says this would slash the value of the biggest energy companies by between 40 and 60 per cent, because they have invested billions of dollars in exploring untapped resources.
In effect, investors have created a "carbon bubble" by ploughing money into fossil fuel reserves that should not be exploited. The economic damage could be minimised if any climate agreement was phased in gradually, says ... more »

Brain Cells to Control The Power Plants Of The Future?
Researchers have hooked up living brain cells, grown in a petri dish, to a computer. The computer runs a simulation of a power plant and sends the neurons problems about electricity distribution. Scientists then take the solutions the brain cells come up with as possible equations for controlling the U.S. electrical grid in the future. (Actual solutions for controlling electricity around the U.S. wouldn't use living neurons; they would just use computer code written after scientists studied what the neurons came up with.)
"In a lab, in simulation studies, we have shown that we can intelligently control a power plant with such biologically inspired neural networks," Kumar Venayagamoorthy, one of the project scientists, tells Popular Science. I run a community called Urban Fantasy Fans. This community is not a writing community. It's a place where I go to talk about TV shows or books set in the urban fantasy genre that I have enjoyed. It's a small community, but we have a lot of fun.
Anyway, today, I made a big announcement in that community. On Thursday, April 25th, at 9 PM Eastern, we'll be having a hangout with Jim Butcher. Jim is the author of the Dresden Files series. The hangout will last for about a half hour.

Jurassic Embryos reveal Dinosaur secrets
Long-necked and long-tailed sauropod dinosaurs grew rapidly in the egg and could flex their muscles before they hatched, a study of rare fossilised embryos from China shows.
The finding helps explain why these dinosaur giants grew so big, say an international team of scientists. Roberts says it is rare to find dinosaur embryos, and previous finds have been of little use for tissue and cellular level analysis as the embryos are enclosed in the eggs.
The different-sized embryo bones show a high level of vascularity or are "spongey", says Roberts, suggesting the sauropodomorph embryos grew faster than those of modern birds and other dinosaurs. The theme song of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is considered just as awesome as the show, so it’s no wonder it has generated so many tributes and covers. However, the one above is perhaps the most jaw-dropping you’re likely to hear today this week this month.
Cello rock band Break of Reality has thought it fitting to pay tribute to the amazing opening theme from the show, by Ramin Djawadi, with their own, slightly different version.
“We are big fans of the show and have received many requests for this cover. Happy to have finally recorded it!” the band says in the description of the video posted on YouTube.

Transhumanism
A major goal of the 2045 Initiative is to establish the world's first research center for immortality. The initiative was launched by Russian internet mogul Dmitry Itskov who is now looking for billionaire and millionaire backers for the grand project that offers the chance of immortality as payoff: The goal is to enable cybernetic immortality within 30 years.

Shapeshifting House
Way back in 1903, mathematician Henry Ernest Dudeney worked out how a perfect square could be cut into sections and folded into an equilateral triangle. It's a neat trick, but what can we do with it? If you're design team D*Haus Company Limited, you try to live inside it, apparently.
Just put up on Kickstarter, D*Dynamic is a proposed house that changes shape based on that mathematical model. Even if the execution is complicated, the idea actually isn't: it's a house that can rotate and open up--from a square to a triangle--depending on the season. On a beautiful summer day, it can extend windowed walls out to soak up the sunshine. In winter, it can curl up into a cube to stay heated.

IDEAS? SUGGESTIONS?
As some of you may know, I am putting together a Kickstarter campaign for my Dad's company, Air to Water Technologies. I'm working on the rewards part of the campaign and running into a bit of a wall.
Many are able to give away their product as a reward. We can't. See the giant machine in the photo below? Yeah, we can't give it away as a reward. Well, we could but you really don't want to know how much you'd need to contribute ;)
What we do have is pretty amazing: A machine that creates water out of thin air in areas that have no access to water or their water source is too contaminated to purify. The machine can also be loaded onto the back of a truck to quickly provide aid to areas hit with natural disasters. At the present time, physically based simulation is widely used in computer graphics to produce animations. Even the complex motion of fluid can be generated by simulation. There is a need for faster simulation in real-time applications, such as computer games, virtual surgery and so on. However, the computational burden of fluid simulation is high, especially when we simulate free surface flow, and so it is difficult to apply fluid simulation to real-time applications. Thus real-time simulation of free surface flow is an open research area

Over my time spent here, I have noticed a few people do one of those 'for a cause' campaigns for cancer awareness, autism, animal care etc.
However, we do not see this happen very often, although there are a lot of community issues which may need to be addressed. I'm willing to take up this project.

In a village in India's poorest state, Bihar, farmers are growing world record amounts of rice – with no GM, and no herbicide.... how?
Sumant Kumar was overjoyed when he harvested his rice last year. There had been good rains in his village of Darveshpura in north-east India and he knew he could improve on the four or five tonnes per hectare that he usually managed. But every stalk he cut on his paddy field near the bank of the Sakri river seemed to weigh heavier than usual, every grain of rice was bigger and when his crop was weighed on the old village scales, even Kumar was shocked.
This was not six or even 10 or 20 tonnes. Kumar, a shy young farmer in Nalanda district of India's poorest state Bihar, had – using only farmyard manure and without any herbicides – grown an astonishing 22.4 tonnes of rice on one hectare of land. And I managed to cobble together some interesting information and this movie which I watched on and off while writing something :)
