This is me overseeing the installation (about 11 yrs ago or so) of a digital PTZ Internet camera system that I built for the City of Mt Vernon, on the south end of the I-5 bridge that just collapsed tonight.

The Sphinx Observatory – Science at the Top of the World ... Kuriositas - "It may look like the hideaway of a super villain from a Bond movie but this is the Sphinx Observatory, dedicated to research which must take place out at an altitude of 3000-3500 meters.
It is situated in Jungfraujoch, Switzerland. At an astonishing 3.571 meters above sea level, the Sphinx observatory in the Swiss Alps is the highest-altitude built structure in Europe.
The Sphinx peak begins from the Jungfraujoch on the Valais side of the Great Aletsch Glacier. Fortunately, for those not built like a mountain goat, there is an elevator to its summit. ..."

There are 1000's of objects just like Pluto out on the edge of the solar system. We are calling them Plutoids. Pluto is their king. Anyway, that's what I've been telling people and it seems to calm them down.

Too many people ask which is the best seat in the planetarium. It's round. The image is on the ceiling. I'm going to start telling them the corner.

‘Star Trek’ Spaceship Model Soars Into Stratosphere
It was billed as the U.S. S. Enterprise’s first “real” flight in space, but the spaceship didn’t get quite that far.

So here's a fun little historical episode for a Saturday morning: On September 9, 1942, Japan bombed the continental United States. They bombed a forest with the hope of starting a devastating forest fire. Unfortunately for them, they targeted the Pacific Northwest where forests are far too damp to catch fire.
It's a pretty brilliant story!

How the price of paint is set in the hearts of dying stars
Today I’m going to try to explain the real reason that barns are painted red: nuclear fusion. And yes, this is an excuse to take a mad ride around some of the stranger corners of physics and chemistry in order to give you the real, this-is-not-BS, answer to a simple question.
This question got stuck in my head as a result of an episode of a long-forgotten sitcom called Head of the Class, about a high school class full of smart kids. (Sort of like Welcome Back, Kotter in reverse) This being an American show, it’s obligatory to occasionally emphasize the superiority of the ordinary virtue of “plain folk,” so in one episode the protagonists face off in some kind of academic contest with kids from a rural school, and end up losing because their city-slicker knowledge can’t answer the question “why are barns red?” (And ... more »

I just don't know about Game of Thrones. I mean, the author creates this delightful milieu, and lots of flawed but interesting characters. Everyone identifies with this character or that, some are downright adorable. But then it's like he becomes dissatisfied and begins killing them all off. Even the small handful that survive tend to be horribly cursed as though the author has some sort of perverted blood lust oh wait. Did I say Game of Thrones? I'm sorry I meant the bible. It's the bible that does that.

Reposting this for those who didn't see it, and because writing anything about von Braun is really hard and I put a lot of effort into making this balanced and fair: My latest on Al Jazeera English looks at Wernher von Braun, a central figure in the Space Race whose Nazi affiliations make him incredibly difficult to talk about in a positive light.

Handheld Nikon D40, just held up to a non-tracking eyepiece (12" F-5 Meade Lightbridge Dobsonian and 26mm Nagler). The kid and her sleepover sidekick seemed to think it was worth getting out of bed to do a little star hopping. They had never seen Saturn for real before.

Sky is clear, twilight is twilighting, Saturn is sailing up near the meridian, scope is cooling down, confidence is high.

The Eta Aquarids meteor shower peaks on May 5 but actually stretches from April 21 to May 12. It produces about 10 meteors per hour at the peak.
Every day an average of about 4 billion meteors enter our atmosphere, totaling more than a hundred tons.
