Rio Grande Cottonwood at sunset, White Sands NM

Haven't been too active here lately, just so much family time around the holidays :) Here's an image from a recent trip to White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. I did my homework and had some ideas in mind...even so it took me until day 3 of the trip to feel like I was getting a handle on the place, but that's to be expected. I've got a small handful of images that I'm excited about (as it should be), and this is one of them...

Anyways, White Sands is truly a fascinating place and very unique! This image of a Rio Grande Cottonwood displays some of that uniqueness. Cottonwoods are water loving trees and usually found in riparian areas. These water loving trees have found a way to sustain themselves on the high water table found in the dunes, and often grow fast enough to keep a handful of branches above... more »

A generous offer from Don:

Sky Crystals Promo – Give a book to a Library
I’d like to introduce a promotional code to anyone interested in buying Sky Crystals. I’ll send you two books for the price of one, if you promise me that the second book will be donated to a local library.

The code is: library

Here’s how it works:
Add 2 copies of Sky Crystals to your cart at http://www.skycrystals.ca/ , and then apply the coupon “library” before checking out which will apply a discount of $44.99 to your order. You get two books for the price of one!... but please don’t keep the second book.

Sky Crystals is filled with scientific and photographic knowledge that I’d love to share. 304 pages and hardcover, it would be the perfect addition to any public library or school library, and I want to share this book with as many people as possible.

I have a few books here that are ever-so-slightly blemished. A slight scuff in the cover or a mark on one of the pages, and I don’t feel right selling something slightly imperfect. That said, I don’t want these books to be scrap, they are great reading material and nothing is wrong with the content. Your second book might have very minor flaws, so much so it might be hard to tell the two apart… but I want them to be enjoyed!

From now until the end of this snowflake series, this coupon code will be active. Buy one book, and get another copy to share with the world. What are you waiting for!? :)___A generous offer from Don:

On 19 January, 2014, 3 judges dismantled the open Internet by deciding that big companies should be able to determine what we see online.

They struck down “Net Neutrality” – the principle that no corporation or state authority can censor, slow down, block, or privilege certain content on the web. It's the basis for what has made the Internet a place for creativity, free speech, and innovation.

Without Net Neutrality, the very startups that make the Internet a force of innovation will be throttled – unable to compete with incumbent businesses that can pay to provide their access faster than any startup could.

As of yesterday’s ruling, no one can protect Internet users from ISPs that block or discriminate against websites, applications or services. Companies like Verizon will now be able to block or slow down any website, application or service they like.

Carriers can now charge content providers to make sure their content works well – something that privileges companies already dominating the market at the expense of the startups that have made the Internet great. Facebook or Google might be able to afford preferential treatment – but what about the startup that otherwise could replace them?

It’s incredibly insidious, and it threatens to take away the level playing field that’s made the Internet such an incredible boon for society.

The FCC, however, has the power to protect Net Neutrality – if they classify broadband as a communications service, something we all know it is with all the time we spend communicating with friends and loved ones via e-mail and social media, they’ll have the power to reinstate Net Neutrality rules.

Tell the FCC to reclassify broadband as a communications service and protect the open Internet.___

Sad sad sad...

Is big game hunting in Africa REALLY adding to conservation efforts??
This is NOT my photo, nor do I endorse this practice!

PLEASE RESHARE SO PEOPLE CAN SEE AND READ THIS!

The Dallas Safari Club posted this one on their website and Facebook pages earlier this week, and it caused a veritable crapstorm on there...
You can view the original here: http://gametrails.org/trophy-pic-cliff-walkers-leopard-of-three/

Hunters always talk big about how hunting adds to (and is a vital part of) conservation efforts in a world that's giving more space to humans and less to wildlife. Here are a few things to consider about the photo you see here:

1. Leopards have HUGE ranges. Killing not one, but 3 (yes, THREE) male leopards in prime condition in a single concession area is as good as dealing a horrific mortal blow to the genetic diversity and sustainable reproduction of the leopards of the area.

2. There is no way you could legally get permits for shooting 3 leopards like this in one day in one area.

3. There is no way you would locate these leopards except by bait-and-switch...luring them with raw meat in a death-trap.

4. This was done in Zambia, a country that now has outlawed the hunting of big cats (like Botswana). When this photo was taken is unclear though.

5. The guy on our far right is called Doug Scandrol, and he has actually been banned from the Dallas Safari Club for life due to (unrelated to this) unethical hunting practices. So why do they boast with this photo on their website??

6. Bear in mind that these kinds of hunters want trophies...not sick and old animals. Killing the prime specimens of the population is severely thinning out the gene pool.

What are your thoughts?
I am outraged at the way Africa's iconic big animals (lions, leopards, elephants) are being killed for sports and for an ego-kick! With the challenge that these big cats already face in terms of genetic diversity...what good does this do? ?

Please share this around so the world can see what big game hunters are doing in the name of responsible consumptive tourism.

PS: I grew up hunting for the pot. I have NO problem with shooting deer or antelope and eating the meat. I have a BIG problem with killing apex predators with dwindling numbers and ranges just because you want to feel like a bad@$$ mofo...

Well, I haven't been around here very much. I'm sure I've been dropped from a few circle shares due to inactivity. Before we get to the image isn't it ironic how you would always see so much complaining (esp. in the photo community) about animated gif's and now thanks to #autoawesome  they are running rampant?!

Anyway here's a Strawberry Hedgehog cactus in bloom from several months back, taken on an outing with +Derek Hannah. Cacti often begin their lives in the safety and shade of bushes or trees.

I'm sure many think I increased the saturation in this image, and I did a bit, but only in the greens. If you've ever seen a Strawberry Hedgehog you know how vivid they are! This is exactly the type of subject where you need to watch you color channel histograms as you shoot...very easy to clip your red channel.

A useful article about reflectors.

5 Tips on Using a Sunbounce Reflector

Reflectors, like all photo equipment, are a considerable investment.  Buying every type of reflector, just to learn how to use them all, is a fast recipe for bankruptcy.  There are so many shapes, sizes, and manufacturers to choose from, how does anyone learn know how to choose what to buy, let alone use?  These tips from photographer Catherine Hall on using and choosing your reflectors will help to make it a bit easier:

1:  Know your weather

Your main light source is the sun.  A reflector takes what it is given from the sun and modifies and redirects it.  That simple.  If you are shooting in broad daylight at noon and use a hard silver reflector to shine that sun right into your subject’s face, your photo will be a hard lit, high contrast mess with squinted, tearing eyes and you will send your subject running.  On the other hand, on a cloudy day, the whole sky is a huge soft even light source and getting a piece of that sky down to ground to help bring light into the eyes of your subject is essential.  Your hard silver reflector just became your new best friend.

2:  Size matters

A soft key light is a beautiful thing.  It evens out skin bumps and age lines, taking years off your subject’s face.  In a studio, we use big softboxes.  In the great outdoors, a big white reflector does the same job.  The bigger the softbox/white reflector, the softer the light.  Silver & gold reflectors are a slightly softer version of a mirror.  The added size means added stop and coverage area.

3:  Know your client

I love shooting in the later afternoon, using a gold & silver zebra reflector to give my subjects a golden sunset glow.  These images often create a feeling of longing and romance.  Although I love the late afternoon look and feel … it probably isn’t the best fit for shooting a bank’s CEO.  Corporate portraits often lean toward a more crisp and cool look.  Using white and/or silver reflectors can give the produced look that better fit these clients.

4:  Shooting in the wind

Love it when a little breeze comes along and lifts a model’s hair, and makes her outfit flow?  So do I.  It gives life and motion to what is really a still image.  When that little breeze becomes a medium breeze and you find your flexible reflector folding in half … Love the breeze then?  I chose to employ a rigid frame reflector to achieve the lighting I want with consistency even in high wind. Sunbounces, with their rigid lightweight frames, fast became the only reflectors I use.  I have even had the 4’ by 6’ Pro out, at the beach, in 30 mph wind, continuously lighting my model.

5:  Feathering

Often shooting outdoors, either between big buildings or under trees, especially later in the day, I find myself hunting for a patch of sunlight I can grab to reflect onto my subject.  30 feet away, there it is!  White side does nothing.  Silver reflector in position … light the subject … uh oh, too much light.  Suddenly my subject is way overlit (and squinting) compared to my background.  By twisting, or feathering, the reflector slightly so that most of the light falls behind the subject and just a kiss off the edge of that reflected light pool, I get a great look.  The reflector has done two jobs: the background now has some light shape and my subject has enough light definition for some shape and gleam in the eyes.  The bigger Sunbounce Pros are great at this.  The dense pool of light from the center of the bounce spreads onto the background and the thin edge of the reflected pool lights my subject perfectly.

Comet Pan-STARRS over Ludden Mountain in north Phoenix

This is the view from yesterday. The coolest part was clicking away without actually seeing the comet in my viewfinder or LCD hoping that all my legwork was accurate (on closer review later I was actually capturing it for several frames before I could tell in the field).

I've got a few more with the comet a bit higher in the sky, but I decided to process this one instead...___

Welcome to G+ oh new plusser you.  Have no fear, I am here to tell you how to internet in 10 simple steps. You are now a public figure, you have a responsibility to your audience and should thus follow these rules.

1. Create a +You. Make up a name then go to Google image search, type in 'hot guy' or 'hot girl' and choose the photo that catches your eye. People on G+ are idiots, they'll believe it's you. Even if they use Tineye to verify whether that hunk-o-steel is in fact you, you can convince them you are the original model. If you encounter that one smartass who knows it all, simply buy the rights to stock photos.

2. To gain new followers, go to Circlecount.com, click on profiles with a lot of followers, add them and the circles they were included in. Do this until you have about 5000 people in your circles all of whom you will be interacting with 24/7. Be prepared to give up your life in favour of responding to a red box with a white number that will become the new metric for your self esteem.

3. Proceed to visit the most high profile profiles on a daily basis and start commenting on posts. Whatever you do, do not disagree with the original poster (OP). People on G+ have an affinity for echo chambers. The offending comments will be deleted and you will be summarily banned into oblivion and, here's the most important part, you will be discussed in private communities. The best way to engage new people is to place your hand in a cupped position, then jerk it up and down, as fast as you can, while you nod your head to everything they say.

4. If the OP is a techie, comment often on Ubuntu, Droid, or Rooting. Refrain from using the letter 'i' in any of your comments.

5. If the OP is a Scientist, for God's sake don't mention your familial connection to Adam or that Evolution is just a theory or that your chakras are out of balance since your spirit guide deserted you .

6. If the OP is a hunk or sexy poppie, comment often on how hot he or she is.

7. If you happen to be the sexy poppie with boobs and a vagina, then you've hit the proverbial jackpot of the Internets. You don't have to do much. Just sit there and look hot. If you get bored of sitting there and looking hot, take some hot new profile photos. Don't forget to push your shoulders back, stick your chest out, chin up and hold your camera high enough so your boobs are in the frame. It should seem like your hardened nipples just popped out of nowhere. Effortlessness is key. Don't worry if people call you an attention whore, they do that with anyone who voices an opinion, changes their profile photo or breathes.

8. So maybe you're not hot and can't get by on your looks, what do you do? So many options. You could go outside, walk up to the first leaf that you see, take a photo of it, then download a photo filter app, apply the lomu filter to your photo, upload it to G+ accompanied by commentary detailing your scenic trip and the exact aperture you used. Or, visit your local Starbucks, take a photo of the wholly original styrofoam cup, apply the lomu filter and upload. No need for commentary when Starbucks is involved. Because Bux.

9. But what if you're a free spirit, independent thinker, non-conformist, not a photographer, only drink red bulls and you're not hot?  Then perhaps trolling is for you. To be a troll, you have to be witty, sarcastic, snarky, poker faced and patronizing (this means talking down to people). You visit posts and make inflammatory comments with the sole purpose of getting a rise out of the OP.  Choosing topics to troll is quite simple; Choose anything with the following words: Jesus, Evolution, Science, Feminism, Obama, Sexism, Animal Rights, Atheism or The.

10. What if you're trolled? Again, simple. Immediately react by responding to every inflammatory comment using CAPITAL LETTERS, then call them the filthiest names you can think of, delete their comments, block them and finally make a new post about them in a private community where all your friends will be waiting for you with their hands in a cupped position, nodding their heads.

Happy Plussing :)

In other news besides my imminent uncircling by the delicate flowers who will miss the fact that this post is tongue in cheek and think it's about them, I stuffed up my circles which means the ones who wanted to be notified and the others are out of whack. If you do not wish to be notified randomly please PM me. Have a good Tuesday x___Good stuff...

How Vaccines Changed the World

On the left, is the pre-vaccine morbidity (number of cases of illnesses) of the most common infectious diseases.

On the right, recent numbers from 2010. There is no smallpox and no polio, almost no measles, dramatically less chickenpox (varicella) and H. influenza (that’s not flu, but a bacteria that can cause deadly meningitis).

Great Photographers With < 25,000 Followers

The photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  There are NO requirements to share this circle.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.

Each profile has been verified by me.  Most have < 25,000 followers (when they were put into the circle).  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!  I have included myself in the circle and also the landscape page.  Some are new to G+ so please make them feel welcome!!

Landscape Photography:  I invite everyone to check out the +Landscape Photography #LandsacapePhotography theme.  If you want to impress me, that’s the place to do it!!  Post a great landscape that will get my attention.  See the About tab for all the details.

I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention.  Start posting landscapes that get my attention (see above)!!

There’s a really great photographer XXX that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you!

If you plan on joining any photo workshops to national parks or monuments make sure the workshop provider plans to get the proper permits. These permits help ensure minimal environmental impact to the area.

Zion busts photographer for conducting a photo workshop without the correct permit: http://www.nps.gov/zion/parknews/conviction-for-operating-a-commercial-business-in-zion-national-park.htm

When I was scouting for my upcoming photo workshop there I saw at least one or 2 other photogs operating illegally. Talking to the rangers there it is a big problem. Rest assured +Christine Hauber  and I will have the necessary paperwork filed and completed way in advance of our upcoming fall workshop there!!!

EPIC!!!

Will the rampant use of this word soon dilute its actual meaning, making it mean 'customary' or 'run of the mill' instead?

I think...yes, and for me it happened 2 years ago. When will this word die?!

Share if you agree. We can only shame delinquents into compliance!

Cottonwoods are water loving trees and usually found in riparian areas. These water loving trees have found a way to sustain themselves on the high water table found in the dunes, and often grow fast enough to keep a handful of branches above the ever moving dunes. Although this tree may look more like a bush, it likely has 10 plus feet of trunk hidden under the dune! Another point of interest: in the background you will see New Mexico's Organ Mountains, some 35 miles away!

I had a Facebook contact express some interest in getting a print of this image so subsequently I've made it available (along with a small handful of other images) from my website at www.sjhphoto.com/prints. I hope she pulls the trigger!

Misinformation on the web

A recent post here and this commercial got me thinking about misinformation on the web. Unfortunately it is rampant, for one simple fact...anyone can publish anything for free or fractions of a cent. Here's one I (unfortunately) ran into recently:

"Something To Think About....a FACT:
Human heart tissue if cut from the heart and preserved in a petri dish... will continue to beat. Not ONLY will it CONTINUE to beat, but it will do so IN rhythm to the heart from which it came. Uh,,,,WOW!"

No citations or support, but notice it's a 'FACT'. Now we can't all be expected to be experts on everything, so it comes down to personal responsibility. If you don't truly know don't call something a fact! If you think something may be true simply add words indicating such, like 'I think' or 'I heard'... more »

Of course even if we are responsible there are many people who won't be, and many more who will spread disinformation also. This is where common sense comes into play! Doesn't sound quite right? Maybe it's not. (Oh and if you've found that you rarely have common sense with real life situations, best to assume you won't have it online ;)___

While building my own website with Wordpress, I ran into a fair number of obstacles. Figuring that quite some photographers use WP for their sites, it may be nice to share knowledge and experience through a community, no?

Spread the word if you like. :)

Bet some of the San Diego residents will recognize this stairwell.

Sweetgum fruit on bed of fall leaves

Took this on a misty afternoon back in my home state of Virginia. I am partial to detail shots of nature like this for several reasons. One of them is they are always available, no matter where you are. During my stay in Virginia we relied on family to transport us around for the most part, and didn't have our own transportation. This image was taken just down the street from my mother's house. On the corner in her neighborhood was a beautiful Sweetgum tree, lit up in amber and red hues. I took this image in the adjacent street gutter (literally) where the fallen leaves had collected. No travel required :)

Good ebook by +Peter Adams on using Wordpress for your photography website. It's good, I have it :)

Get Your Photography Website Ready For the Holidays!

I almost titled this "Friends Don't Let Friends Have Crappy Photo Websites". ;)

You see, people love to give photography as holiday gifts. That is why a lot of photographers see big print sale increases between Thanksgiving and New Years.

However, one of the keys to selling prints is to make a good first impression with your website. These days one wants to do business with a Photog that has a sketchy site.  So consider this a reminder to give your website some love (or even build a new one from scratch) before the holidays kick in to high gear.

If you use (or are considering) WordPress for your website give my ebook a look over at +Trey Ratcliff's Flatbooks: http://goo.gl/pjV2T

It's a 100+ pages of step-by-step guides, secrets, tips, tricks, and how-to for getting a new WordPress website up and running fast as well as taking an existing website to the next level.

Want to help me spread the holiday cheer? Just share this post with your fellow G+ photographers... because as I said up top: friends don't let friends have crappy websites for the holidays. ;)

Here's the link to the book again: http://goo.gl/pjV2T___Good ebook by +Peter Adams on using Wordpress for your photography website. It's good, I have it :)

Really spectacular silhouette composition from +Kurt Budliger. I just love the shapes that branch silhouettes make, but not every tree has the structure for this.

Moon Branches II, Champlain Valley, Vermont

Another from a crisp, clear evening last week.  I love finding these little gems when you least expect them.  I had just finished shooting sunset on the lake shore and was headed back to the car when I noticed the setting crescent moon in the southern sky.  I quickly found an elegant collection of trees to silhouette against the twilight sky and compliment the moon.

Headed out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Hope everyone gets a chance to spend time giving thanks, relaxing and being with family and friends.

As always thanks for taking a peek.

Dancing Sugar Maple leaves

I visited my home state of Virginia recently and it was really the first time I've been back since 2004 during autumn. I forgot how beautiful my home state is and was fortunate to drive the length of it on our way to a wedding, seeing all the incredible rolling hills, farmland, and of course fall color along the way.

Because of the wedding plans there was not too much time for photography, just a bit. This was taken under several large sugar maples on the Va Tech campus, all ablaze in orange. Although there was a carpet of fallen leaves, it took some searching to find a freshly fallen pair that stood out from the crowd.

I did a 360 processing job on this one. I thought I knew where I wanted to go with it, but once I got there realized I lost some of what caught my eye in the first place, and ended up closer (than previous) to the default... more »
