Danial Hallock10,323No Name NeededIt's getting close to the Holiday Season, and the whole point of this particular part of the season is to "give thanks" to the people (or, in America, things) that have positively impacted your life.  For me, these are those people. You all should remember my initial circle The Three Hundred (http://goo.gl/kqE8h) which was well received at 251 +1s and 48 reshares.  This circle was my first round of hyper-vetting individuals for circling, based on a lot of criteria that was centered around high quality content and a high level of engagement.  I think I combed through about 2,300 profiles on a one-by-one basis before arriving at the final product. That circle then morphed into the The Collaborative Circle (http://goo.gl/Ex9ai) which was less publicized, but still racked in 90 +1s and 13 reshares.  This circle was based on the premise that "If four people from The Three Hundred enjoy person X, then I should also enjoy them."  Well, the combination of these circles lead to an interesting scenario in which I was able to locate all stars through a combination of overlap and relevance (via Google algorithms).  Out popped these twenty five individuals, and I could not be happier with the results.  These are twenty-five individuals in which I am subscribed, their posts are always enjoyable as well as insightful, and the notification stream keeps me engaged throughout the day.Whether you're looking at the tech news from +Mike Elgan, the social and scientific commentary of +Yonatan Zunger, or the general internet awesomeness that is the enigma of +Sarah Rios, you're not going to be disappointed.I normally only notify people that are contained within a circle, but these people are too awesome not to be guilty of a little plus-spam;  feel free to request a removal from the notified (all) circles.(Link to this post: http://goo.gl/AlsXG5) #nonameneeded   #circleshare   #sharingiscaring   #sharedcircle  2013-11-13 23:53:242639671

Vilde and the Sword of Ice Part 1 is now written. No chapter names for this story... because.

It's a bit slower going than the Douglas Brodie stuff. I'm still feeling out Vilde's voice, plus since it's 2nd world fantasy I've got more setup to do.

But, we've reached the Ice Tombs on schedule so we're primed for part 2.

I've been playing with some of the +PSDCovers Actions for Photoshop tonight. They make it really easy to do things like this if you have a suitably high resolution cover image.

The spines need work, I should have put the book number on there too. But it was only a few minutes work to create these and that was mostly just scaling the cover image and typing in the spine text.

Chapter 1.2: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+AndyGoldman/posts/Ze7FxjtfWrG

The Only City Left Chapter 1.3

More tacmites leapt at me and I batted them away. The rest of them smartened up and stayed on the beam rather than be picked off one by one. Even the ones above me poured down to join the growing swarms on either side.

Clever or not, the tacmites clearly didn’t know what I had in store for them.

“Hang on tight, kitty,” I whispered into my jacket.

The empod beeped faster, forcing me into action. I breathed fast and wiped my hands on my pants one at a time before grasping the gun in both hands.

I eyed my goal, a storefront on a level about halfway down the mall, and pushed off the beam as hard as I could in the opposite direction.

The rope whizzed from the muzzle of the grapple gun as I fell back and down. I held onto the grip for all I was worth as, inside my jacket, the cat let me know exactly how he felt about the sudden drop.

I swear that cat had a hundred claws and it tried to use them all to dig from one side of me to the other. I screamed and squirmed but could do nothing to stop him from slicing up my chest and stomach through my thin shirt.

On the beam above, the empod’s beeps reached a crescendo. The two waves of tacmites collided above it and flowed down the rope toward me even as I fell further away from them. Their greedy maws chomped in anticipation.

Finally, the beeping reached a fever pitch and the empod erupted in a sizzling electromagnetic pulse, frying the circuitry of all the tacmites that had been ready to devour me.

I smiled through gritted teeth, but not for long, because the pulse also fried the lights, plunging me into darkness.

I fell free for a few more seconds, until the gun’s failsafe kicked in and gradually slowed the rope’s output so it wouldn’t be torn out of my hands when it reached its end.

Once the rope was taut, my momentum pulled me down and toward the opposite side of the mall, which had been my plan from the get-go. Of course, in my rush, I hadn’t counted on my empod frying the lights too.

Whoops.

The wind whipped at my face and howled in my ears as I hung from the grip of my grapple gun, flying totally blind. As my descent leveled out, I knew I had only seconds before I reached the far wall, so I tucked my legs up to prepare to hit it.

Something falling from above hit me first as I passed through a storm of fried tacmites. They didn’t hurt, not really, but all together they turned me around and set me spinning.

I roared a long “No!” as I spun around and up toward the side of the mall. If I were lucky, I would hit just below one level and fall onto the ramped walkway outside of the abandoned stores.

I wasn’t lucky.

With a meaty thud, I slammed sideways into something hard and unyielding. The impact forced the air from my lungs and knocked my left hand from the gun’s grip.

I held on with my right hand and kicked my feet out to try to catch onto something with my cling-tights. I found only air.

My right hand slid down the grip as I swung back out into the inky void, spinning out of control, the damn cat still kneading its claws into my flesh.

Always stay alive. Dad’s voice in my head. Okay, Dad, but only since you asked nice.

I giggled and moaned at the same time. Clenching my teeth together so hard they ached, I whipped my left hand up and wrapped it around the grip again.

The cat and I howled in unison as we sped toward the other side of the mall and another blind collision. Though I held the gun tight in both hands, I knew another impact would knock me loose.

Even though it was already dark, I squeezed my eyes shut to brace for the inevitable hit.

It never came.

Instead, I slowed for a moment before swinging back toward the center of the mall. Twirling around the rope’s axis, I swung back and forth in ever-shorter arcs.

Once I reached a standstill, I strained to bend my elbows and pull myself up, but I didn’t have the strength.

Inside my jacket, the cat finally let up and lay still. It was a small favor as it had already done plenty of damage. Every slice and gouge on my chest and stomach throbbed in pain.

My arms quivered from the effort of holding myself up. Sweat beaded down my forehead and stung my eyes.

I had saved us from the tacmites only to run out of moves. All I could do was hang from the grapple gun like a worm on a hook, the ground an unknown number of stories below.

I wondered which would happen first: Would I let go or would one of the creatures who dwells in the darkness happen along to take the bait?

To be continued next week

Or, if you want to read along at a faster pace, I'm releasing the story 3x/week on Wattpad: http://www.wattpad.com/story/34658555-the-only-city-left

My latest #GreatIndieReviewProject book is Red by J.B. Wise. Taking characters from classic fairy tales (in this case Red Riding Hood), bringing them to the present day and giving them a paranormal spin is a concept that is rife with potential. I see glimmers of that potential in Red but sometimes the execution gets in the way.

It's worth noting that there is a novelette that precedes this story and that reading that first might better set the stage for what happens in the novel.

Some of the events are referenced here but don't receive explanation which can lead to confusion for the reader. It's easy as the author to forget that the reader doesn't have the same knowledge you do, and there's no guarantee that they will start with the first story.

So What's It All About?

Well you have three primary actors in the story, Red who has been stuck in her Vila state for hundreds of years, but resists her abilities because she hates the curse associated with them. Then there's Felan, second in command of the Guard. He finds himself drawn to Red despite the potential problems that creates for him.  And finally there's Jac, he wants Red.

These three each represent one of Red Riding Hood, the Wolf and the Hunter, though their personalities and actions may not be quite what you expect from the fairytale (again reading the novelette first may help a lot)

The story follows many of the tropes for paranormal romance in that Red and Felan start off disliking each other, but irresistibly attracted at the same time. It's not an original concept, but the audience for these books likes that trope so fair enough.

Confusion

Reading what I wrote above, you may be asking yourself. What's a Vila? Who are the Guard? And there lies one of the biggest problems with the book as it stands. J. B. Wise clearly has a complex world structure figured out with different powers all locked in a sort of eternal balance. This matters, because things are happening that could upset that balance, and the consequences will likely be bad.

The problem is, I can't really tell you exactly who all these groups are, what they can do and why they might be doing what they are doing. I also can't tell you, in terms of powers, what makes the Guard different from Vila or Trackers.

That confusion is one of the things that stopped me from fully immersing myself in the book. I was always trying to put things together and figure out how they related.

Setting and Description

In the book description, the author says the story is set in the woods of Washington. Now I have never been to Washington so I really can't critique the accuracy of the depiction but with the exception of the one house where Alistair and Felan live (which I can picture) the other locations are a little generic.

This was even more noticeable to me in the flashback scene which was set in Scotland. As someone who spent the first 28 years of his life in Scotland, those scenes felt like "generic historical setting" not Scotland.

I feel that a little more time spent on the settings and getting across what makes those places unique would pay dividends. A missed opportunity here was to utilize scent more when the characters were in wolf form. Their behavior as wolves is carefully described and we get some references to smells, but scent is of particular importance to wolves and using that more would be a great way to emphasise the different form.

Characters

There are quite a few characters introduced in the book and some, naturally, don't get a lot of time. The major characters are fairly well fleshed out however and to act in a way that is distinct to each other.

The relationship between Red and Felan is of course at the core of the story so that gets the most time. As I mentioned earlier it does follow a familiar pattern, but the change in attitude is slow enough to be believable.

There's nothing  wildly inconsistent here. Even the withholding of information that various characters do can be argued to be in character for them. There are, however, characters whose motivation could do with a little further explanation

In the end though how much you like this book probably hangs on how much you like Red and Felan. If you connect with their relationship the rest falls into place or gets swept aside.

Did You Like It?

I'm sort of lukewarm on this one. I didn't get caught up in the story the way I would like to have and the cliffhanger at the end of the book didn't hook me for the next one.  The threats to both character and setting didn't really connect with me. In the end I feel that there's a better book inside this one waiting to get out. It's possible that potential will be realized in the sequel.

Buy, Sample or Skip?

I'd say grab the sample from Amazon and try it out if the subject sounds interesting. People who are more into the paranormal romance genre will likely be more forgiving of what I perceived as flaws in the story. You'll certainly get a good feel for the pacing and style of the book from that sample.

November is a good way off yet, but we have a teaser for the next James Bond movie Spectre.

It looks good and it continues the recent trend of making the plots more personal and linked to Bond himself. I may have to watch Skyfall again now.

Chapter 7: Gluttony

I watched in growing horror as Lee Anne crammed more and more food into her mouth. Grease dribbled down her face and some of the food fell to the floor but she was pushing an impossible amount into her mouth and she swallowed it without chewing.

I shuddered as a large mass of food made her throat bulge.  Her whole body seemed to be swollen and bloated I realized, growing at an impossible rate as she consumed her food.

I reached out to stop her from taking another bite, but she pushed me away and bared her teeth at me, the smell of burgers, fries and fat strong on her breath.  My step backward was involuntary, for a moment she seemed almost feral in her protection of her food.

Something had to be done quickly though. Whatever the source of the magic it was harming Lee Anne and if things went much further they might be irreversible. I didn't have time to unravel the spell affecting her so my easiest option was to render her harmless to herself.

Fortunately, that is one charm I now carry everywhere. My hand fumbled in my pocket as I pulled out a small zip-lock bag, opened it, got a pinch of the fine dark powder in my hands and flicked it into Lee Anne's eyes. She blinked, dropping the food long enough to wipe the powder from her stinging eyes, which was all the distraction I needed to initiate the spell and she slumped over against the slot machine.

The powder in question, just pepper. The spell requires a susceptible mind and people who are distracted are much more open to suggestion. The fact she was already under some sort of spell no doubt helped too, I'd been able to get her into the trance even quicker than I had hoped.

I checked her pulse and then, taking care to be as gentle as I could, lowered her to the floor, lying her on her side. Her breathing was gentle but her body was still under malign influence and it remained bloated and distorted. Underneath the stench of the fast food I thought I smelt a hint of something else, but I wasn't able to place it. My spell would stop her feeding the magic affecting her, but her body might reject the food she had crammed into it, and I didn't want her vomiting and choking.

"Interesting things keep happening round you don't they Mr. Brodie." An unfamiliar voice broke into my concentration.

Did a little bit of cleanup work on this one. Fixed some typos and some grammar, added additional images and included a trailer for King Kong.

Sharing it, because IMNSHO more people should read these.

So I'm thinking...

I want to start providing unique (or at least early access to) content for mailing list subscribers and I'm considering what I could offer.

Right now I'm committed to the weekly serial here and on my blog so that will stay public. Similarly the book and tv reviews I do are intended for everyone.

Some possibilities that have occurred to me so far:

- A second weekly serial that is published to the mailing list first and won't appear elsewhere in any form for a specified amount of time (weeks)

- Exclusive stand alone scenes (like the one I've just written and will be sending to the list next week (all going to plan) that aren't posted anywhere else.

The tradeoff here is that if I do those things on the mailinglist I would have to not do them (or at least do them much less) on here or elsewhere.

I'm specifically not going the offer a free book/short story route because (a) I don't have one to offer, (b) even if I did there's nothing to upsell people to right now as far as finished material is concerned and (c) people might only subscribe for the freebie.

Thoughts anyone?___

So I'm working on the short scene that I'm going to give exclusively to my mailing list.  It introduces the Paranormal, Mystical and Spiritual Association (or PMSA) a group that I plan to use in future Douglas Brodie stories.

I don't expect this precise scene to appear in the stories, it's more of a lightly humorous interlude.

In telling the bearded and bespectacled man, whose name now escapes me, that he shouldn't continue his experiments with pentagonal summoning matrixes my aim was to keep him alive. I also hoped to avoid unleashing the hoards of a demon plane on our world, but that was more of a secondary goal.

They came in too low.

Beyond the flaming port Phoenix could see the red Tharsis uplands mushrooming across the horizon, closer all the time. She burned the last of the craft’s precious fuel, hoping to at least hit the surface like she’d tried to hit the atmosphere, a glancing blow at an oblique angle. She heard her second in command yell in her helmet radio. She glanced left to where he was strapped in next to her. Frightened eyes behind his faceplate was the last thing she saw as the Ares slammed into the Martian surface and oblivion engulfed her.

So I've actually achieved all but one of my writing goals already this week. The only one left is the thorny issue of Beta Readers.

I have posted ZombieMart in its second draft from on Amazon's WriteOn platform and am getting some valuable feedback there but it's not quite the same as a full read through.

The problem is I'm mostly interested in story/character feedback rather than copy editing (useful as that can be with all the typos I make) and what I'm offering in return for that is.... absolutely nothing.

Finding people willing to take that deal who also are a good match is... challenging.

Since this one's a short story I could probably skip a step, but I'd just end up with the same problem for Dragon Hoard

I mentioned earlier that I'm overcommitted because of the time I'm spending writing currently.

This is not such a bad problem to have, but it does mean I'm not able to do some things I would like to do. Specifically I'm not reading, and thus not commenting on, nearly as much fiction here in #SaturdayScenes, on WattPad or WriteOn as I would like to.

Pretty much my one post to #DailyFiction  is the sum total I can do currently, because reading just takes a lot of time, particularly if you have to read several stories to find one to recommend.

Your Daily Dose of Fiction: Ithaka Rising by +Lisa Cohen

It's time for some #DailyFiction  again and today I'm resharing this excerpt from +Lisa Cohen's sequel to Derelict, called Ithaka Rising.

A half-remembered melody drifted through Jem's mind. It was something Barre had written years ago. Years before the drugs and the arguments with their parents that had spilled over and poisoned the brothers' relationship. It was a song Barre had written just for him - a lullabye that had filled the emptiness and chased away the fear Jem had felt strapped in the small jump chamber on their parents' ship.

The sound faded as Jem woke to darkness.

"Barre?" His own voice sounded small and thin. He took a deep breath and the stale smell of the jump chamber brought him back to the present. This was Charon's ship. Jem tugged on the restraints, but they didn't retract. "Hey! Get me out of here!"

Jem squirmed. The old compression foam bottomed out and his spine pressed against the hard frame of the acceleration couch. He rotated his arm and groped for any kind of release mechanism. The cuff Charon had given him clanked against the metal straps.

Charon had drugged him. Jem didn't know whether to be furious or grateful. His head didn't ache and he didn't desperately need to vomit, so maybe the gratitude just edged out the anger. At least for now.

"Hello?" Whatever Charon had given him had knocked him out hard, but now that he was conscious, his body was making its needs known. He had to pee. And he was hungry. "Look. I'm awake. If this ship is going to make any more jumps, you're going to have to sterilize the bay."

The ship had to have an AI to calculate the jumps. And most AIs were programmed with emergency overrides. Medical overrides. Jem smiled in the darkness. His parents made sure he knew the codes as well as the consequences of using them inappropriately. Releasing jump restraints mid-jump had messy and often lethal outcomes.

Ignoring the pressure in his bladder, Jem focused on the ship. There was no sound other than the humming of the air handlers. Since he didn't feel as if his body was being pulled inside out in the human equivalent of a mobius strip, Jem knew they weren't mid-jump. But they weren't under normal propulsion either. Even the quietest of interstitial drives made a ship vibrate. And a ship this old would definitely have a shimmy.

So they were either landed, docked, or adrift.

In any case, Jem wanted out. He channeled his best Dr. Leta Durbin. It was a brook-no-nonsense attitude coupled with an absolute certainty of being obeyed that made her brutally efficient in a crisis. "Emergency medical override alpha alpha alpha. Disengage jump restraints." This might not count in his mother's world as a crisis, but Jem wasn't above using any advantage he could.

The restraints clicked opened. Jem blinked his tearing eyes as light flooded the compartment. Wriggling out a little at a time, he was able to reach the grab bar, slide free the rest of the way, and land on his feet in the corridor.

"You're more resourceful than you look."

Jem jumped at the sound of Charon's voice right behind him. The man leaned against the only intact bulkhead panel, spinning the metal cuff on his wrist.

Whatever Charon had injected him with was nearly out of Jem's system and the nausea had returned. It wasn't so bad yet that he had to hold onto the wall, but it would get there. He needed to find the head before that. "I get that a lot." Jem shrugged. "You should block all the primary overrides. Everyone forgets the medical ones."

"And where would that have left you?" The woman whose voice filled the narrow corridor wasn't much taller than Jem. She limped closer, favoring her left leg. As far as he knew, she hadn't been aboard on Gal 3. So unless they stopped to take on a passenger while Jem was in dreamland, they had landed. Or docked. And she came from whatever they had parked.

"Not too far from where I am now. Only still horizontal. Is there a head on this boat?"

Charon snapped to rigid attention as she stopped beside him. "Major Doc, sir!" he shouted, saluting.

"At ease, ferryman. I'll take it from here."

"You sure, Doc?" Charon asked, ignoring Jem.

"Aren't I always?"

Jem studied her short white hair and the deep creases that created short parallel lines that carved a path from between thin eyebrows up across her forehead. She wore a stained engineer's coverall. Its pockets were filled with delicate tools, but her hands were clean. Her blue-eyed gaze took him in and seemed to judge him by standards Jem couldn't hope to match. She reminded him of a future version of Ro.

As Charon squeezed past, the old soldier grabbed Jem's wrist just above the cuff. Jem winced, but gritted his teeth to avoid crying out. "Welcome to The Underworld," Charon said. "Don't do anything stupid or I'll ferry you out into interstitial space myself." He nodded to the old woman. "I'll be monitoring."

"Of course you will," she answered, smiling, before turning to Jem. "You need to use the head, then I think some food is in order, and after that, answers."

"Yes." The pressure in his bladder was becoming painful.

"Well, follow me." She would have stumbled if not for the intact grab rail along the one remaining sealed bulkhead.

Jem glanced down at her feet. The heel and sole of her left shoe was a good two centimeters thicker than the right and still it wasn't enough to erase the limp.

"Souvenir. A gift from the Commonwealth." She glanced at where Charon had disappeared. "One of many."

So many questions filled his mind. The most pressing one was if he had made the right choice. No one knew where he was. Hell, he didn't know where he was. He swallowed down bitter saliva and lurched after her.

Book Review: Fated by Benedict Jacka - http://www.eoghann.com/book-review-fated-by-benedict-jacka

It's fair to say that Fated, the first book in Benedict Jacka's Alex Verus series had a lot in common with a certain Chicago based mage.  It's a similarity that Jacka even acknowledges with an in story reference.  I'm sure there are people who will dismiss the series as a cheap copy based just on a handful of familiar elements.

And that would be a shame because while it is hard not to make comparisons early on (raised by a dark mage... check!) Alex Verus is not Harry Dresden. Both his powers and his character are different. This is something that becomes increasingly obvious as the book progresses.

All right then. Today's writing goal was an easy one. I've written the Douglas Brodie scene that I'm going to share only to my mailing list subscribers.

It's just a short thing (700 or so words) and not plot critical, but it does introduce an organization (PMSA) and at least one character that will feature in a future story.

Now I just have to figure out what the best formats will be for doing the sharing.

Over on Medium.com, Matter has been doing some really good journalism about Mars One.

When Mars One originally announced their plans the internet reaction was fairly positive. Finally someone was going to get humans on Mars. That enthusiasm effectively overwhelmed the serious questions that were being raised about how exactly this would work.

At this point it's hard to see Mars One as much more than an attempt to scam money.

Middle-Earth Artwork: Glaurung's Gaze - http://www.deviantart.com/art/Glaurung-s-Gaze-492777365

Since I completed my writing goal, it's time to share another geeky reward with my followers. This time up it's Glaurung's Gaze a rather excellent illustration of a scene from the Silmarillion by  ebe-kastein.

Glaurung was of course the first of the non-winged Dragons that Morgoth loosed on Beleriand.

And while he [Tứrin] was yet held by the eyes of Glaurung in torment of mind, and could not stir, at a sign from the Dragon the Orcs drove away the herded captives and they passed nigh to Tứrin and went over the bridge. And among them was Finduilas, and she held out her hands to Tứrin, and called him by name.

Just finished watching Men in Black for the first time in several years. Still a fun movie and it even won over my son Jamie who generally hates anything he hasn't seen before.

Since I've seen it a few times I was watching it on a slightly different level. It's interesting to see many common elements of blockbuster story structure implemented effectively. The ones that stuck out to me most were the mirroring (with the reference to the stars at the beginning at the end of the movie) and of course Chekov's Gun with the reference to not pressing the red button early on which is nicely paid off near the end.

Fringe: The Complete Series 55% Off - http://amzn.to/1DIy8Xl

While it started off with a very monster of the week feel, Fringe developed into one of my favorite science fiction shows. Arguably the final season goes a bit too far out there but the core trio and their relationships made it work anyway.

Right now Amazon is offering 55% off the boxed set of all five seasons of Fringe on DVD (4552 minutes, 28 discs). That's a pretty solid deal.

Part 6: Food Fight

Depending on when you get to the casino the atmosphere can vary from one of excitement to a general sense of desperation, all covered by lots of loud noise. That evening it was different, there was tension in the air.

The smiles on the waitresses face looked a little more fixed than usual, the patrons seemed even more obsessed with their slot machines than ever. On my initial wander round for the evening I noticed several incidents of shoving and raised voices. These were people who really needed to let off steam, which is ironic considering where they were don't you think?

Wayne seemed more than usually nervous too. His hands wouldn't stay still, tugging at his ear or smoothing down what little hair he had left. Not that I could blame him, what with the Casino owner being on site. Even on a good day that could make you nervous, and this was clearly not a good day even to someone without a wizard's perceptions.

"Hey Wayne." I greeted him. "Have you seen Rick?"

"No." He practically spat the words at me. "He hasn't shown, and neither has Jim." Which explained the anger, being understaffed was never a good thing.

"I'd better get out there then." I said. Jim wasn't going to be in the mood to speculate about Rick or much of anything else right now.

"Keep an eye on things Doug." Jim said. I suppressed a wince and forced myself to nod. My name's Douglas, not Doug.

Back out on the floor, the tension in the air had an almost physical presence. The noise can get to you any day, but I had just got here and already I could feel a headache building. It felt unnaturally hot and the air seemed to close in around me, making my skin itch. I strongly suspected something mystical at play, but as short staffed as we were though I couldn't just go wandering off to investigate.

Instead I did what I was supposed to do, wandering the floor, greeting the guests and offering help where I could. Normally I could expect to receive some thanks, or maybe a smile, this evening I was lucky if I didn't get knocked out of the way.

I figured I'd go and check in on Lee Anne, see what she could tell me about the strange behavior. Sure enough, she was sitting in her usual spot, playing the slots.

"How's it going?" I greeted her, but she didn't even look up from her game. "So, what's the scoop." I tried again, reaching out to rest a hand on her shoulder.

Now strictly speaking we're really not supposed to lay our hands on the guests, unless they get physical themselves, but it was Lee Anne. I certainly wasn't expecting the response I got. She turned her to look at me, her expression one of irritation bordering on outright anger. With a hiss she batted my hand away and turned right back to the slot machine, completely dismissing me.

That's not exactly normal behavior for anyone, but for Lee Anne, it was unthinkable. If I'd needed more proof that someone or something was manipulating the casino guests, I had it. But who, or what and why?

I left Lee Anne to her machine and headed for the back office area. I needed somewhere quiet in order to investigate what was going on here. Magic requires concentration and that is not something you can achieve while standing on the floor of a casino with bells ringing and music playing and people talking. Actually when you put it like that, it's a miracle I can even walk and talk while out there.

As usual though my plans were thwarted by  a strange compulsion to keep my job. The radio squawked a Code Chartreuse. I have no idea who picked the color codes or why they thought chartreuse would be a good fit, but in short it means "Everybody hurry up and get here the guests are fighting!". So I went running for the food court!

The excitement was mostly over by the time I got there. There was still some shouting going on and a couple of people were being bodily removed from the scene, but mostly what was left to do was clean up.

I mean that literally because the gentleman in question had apparently been grabbing food off the plates of the other guests, knocking most of it to the floor in the process. The place was a mess and it was full of highly disgruntled guests. Wayne was wandering round frantically offering free food vouchers to everyone within eyeshot of the events.

I watched him for a moment, wondering how much worse his day could possibly get, when I caught sight of Sante Drago and his entourage. The whole group of them had emerged from whatever private room he was occupying and were observing the scene. That couldn't be good.

I took the opportunity to study Mr. Drago from a distance. I could sense the mystical power within him, concealed by that human form.  He was a formidable presence. Instinctively I tried to make myself smaller and less obtrusive. But the expression on his face disturbed me. If Drago had been a regular human being I would have sworn he was worried.

Could he sense what I was sensing in the air at his casino? And if so, what did it take to worry a dragon?

It was a good half hour or more before I was able to extract myself from the food court disaster and return to Lee Anne and the sight of her shocked me. She was still sitting in front of the slot machine, but must have left it at some point because next to her were piles of food and a giant sized drink.

She still had one hand on the slot machine handle, but the other was cramming an entire burger into her face, heedless of the dripping sauce going all down her front. As soon as her hand was free she reached for the soda and gulped on it, while still chewing.

Her body seemed strangely altered, bulging and misshapen so that her clothes didn't fit properly any more. As I got closer I detected a faint odor of corruption and rot about her. Paying no attention to me she shoved a handful of fries into her already full mouth,  most of them falling onto the seat and floor around her.

Before she could reach for yet more food, the machine lit up like a jukebox and tokens clattered out of the bottom. With a cry of glee she grabbed for them and shoveled them greedily into her large cup, her face contorted into a look of painful ecstasy.

Something had possessed Lee Anne.

When he reached the room, he secured her chain to one end of the bed, and sat gingerly at the other end. The waxing moonlight flooded the bed, giving a silver sheen to her red and snowy fur.

"When you are a woman, I can remove the chain," he told the fox.
