Here's a shot from my live shoot yesterday during the B&H Photo Lightroom 5 Digital Photography Summit

Earlier in the day I showed a cool feature in Lightroom 5 that lets you preview your image in any layout you create, from a magazine cover (I created the one you see here), to wedding or photo book cover, to whatever you create. I posted a bunch of behind-the-scenes photos (including lighting and camera settings from the shoot) over on my blog today. A new version is Photoshop is shipping today --- Photoshop CC

My personal favorite new feature is the ability to instantly apply Camera Raw as a filter (see below). No more closing your current document, and going through a four-step process to reopen your image to apply Camera Raw tweaks. It's been on my wish list for years now and I'm thrilled that it's finally there! Lots more to CC of course, but that one just makes my day!

Sweet deal on a Manfrotto tripod

I saw this deal this weekend on Zite (I wish I could remember the site, but it was a company that does photo workshops and they always recommend this particular tripod to their students and they were the ones that found the sale). It looks pretty sweet. It's normally $189.95 (at B&H), but they have a $35 instant rebate and a $45 addt'l mail-in rebate, which brings the price down to $109.95 (deal end Jun 30th)

Want a cool way to hang your prints?

When I posted the photo on the left earlier this week, I had a number of questions about what I was using to display my prints on the wall behind me in my office. Those are actually thin shelves from IKEA called RIBBA that are perfect for clipping prints to. They're about $10 a section (cheap!) but the downside is --- you can't order them online --- you have to go an actual IKEA store to get them. Anyway, hope that helps. :)

Here's the print I made for the owner of the Audi R8

It's a 24"x30" print that I put together in Lightroom's Print Module (using a 3 column by 3 row layout). I saved the image as JPEG and then opened it in Photoshop to add the text and my signature/logo.

Some behind-the-scenes shots from my retouching class taping today

Today I taped a full-length online class for NAPP all on Portrait Retouching using nothing but Lightroom 5, and I am really excited at how it came out. The stuff you can now do in LR5 retouching wise, is truly amazing (thanks to the addition of a real Healing Brush, and using some other tools in unexpected ways).
 
I think a lot of photographers will be really surprised at what you're able to do just in Lightroom 5 now --- it's no longer just for a quick retouch. The class will be available free to NAPP members as soon as Lightroom 5 actually ships. I'm also releasing my "Lightroom Killer Tips" class right after that. Can't wait 'till these go live!

Adobe is listening.

I just read a blog post from Adobe called "Our Move to Creative Cloud: An Update" where they are letting everybody know they are hearing all the feedback from their user community and they are working on some solutions. They list some of the main concerns they are hearing (including the concerns of photographers), but at this point they haven't said exactly what they're going to do to address these concerns, but at least we know they're listening. 

They also make it petty clear that the Creative Cloud is here to stay, but they are making the CS6 products available to own outright for people who aren't ready to make the jump.

Now, just because I mentioned a post written by and from Adobe, that doesn't mean it's now open-season on me. If you want to tell Adobe something, tell Adobe. Here's the link to their post:... more »

Here's the "missing cover image" from my post yesterday about my Flipboard 2.0 magazine called "Cool Photography Stuff"

I was posting from my flight home from Vegas, using GoGo wireless on the plane, and for some reason it just wouldn't display the image --- just a black screen with a refresh icon. Never had that happen before, but anyway, if you have Flipboard 2.0 for IOS or Android, the magazine (like the App) are both free, and I update it daily with fresh content from all over social media and the Web. Hope you check it out.

A Day To Honor Our Nation’s Fallen Soldiers

Today is Memorial Day in the United States, and our offices are closed as we honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

This post is also dedicated each year to the memory of David Leimbach, (shown below right; the brother of our friend and colleague Jeff Leimbach), who died five years ago in combat in Afghanistan.

Just a humble word of thanks to the dedicated men and women of our armed services and to all those who came before them who laid down their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy each day.

I love LA!

A big thanks to the nearly 700 photographers who came out yesterday to my "Shoot like a Pro Tour!" I've had some really wonderful crowds on this new tour, but yesterday's crowd in LA takes the cake. When the crowd is really engaged like that, the whole day just flows, and seeing so many new faces (and lots of friends like +Alan Hess and Mike Kubeisy) made it one of my most memorable LA seminars ever! OK, I haven't seen this one before...

Yesterday in Seattle the blow dryer in my hotel didn't work (by the way, the only way you learn that the blow dryer doesn't work is to stand in front if it with wet hair). Anyway, had to call the front desk; they sent a maintenance man who fixed it quickly, but when he left he left this apology note and three pieces of hard candy. I have to say, even though it didn't make up for my bad hair day, it certainly didn't hurt. Lol!!! Way to go Hampton Inn! :)

I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to see that that the Int'l Society of Aviation Photography (ISAP) chose one of my shots for the cover of their annual Symposium program

That's my wide shot of an FA/18 at sunset in the center and they chose another for inside the program (that's mine top left corner on the right page). Truly an honor to be alongside such amazing photographers. I heard the event was just incredible (as always). My humble thanks to the ISAP for the honor. :)  --Scott (proud ISAP member).

OK, I went and tried out the new flickr last night. Love the way it looks --- hate the way it works.

It's a beautiful, clunky, "let's bury the command they'll be looking for at a level that would make Adobe engineers proud" kind of place that, once you learn all the ins/outs is probably OK, but I just don't have to time to play "site hide-and-seek." I so hate sitting there thinking, "I just want to delete this photo" and all the obvious ways to do it don't work (I eventually found it), but I had to Google numerous topics.

You shouldn't have to use one site to research how to use another (especially when G+'s own great-looking galleries have gotten so good, and so much more intuitive). Oh well, flickr --- it was worth a shot, I guess.
