About a week ago I shared a monochrome version of this image. This is a polar projection of a spherical 360° panorama. The church is very symmetrical and the polar projection really brings out the symmetry of the church.

This is the Basilique Notre-Dame de 'Assomption in Neuchatel Switzerland, locally known as the "Red Church". The nickname is well deserved. It's just as red outside as it is inside. The color here isn't as exaggerated as you might think.

The 360 x 180° base panorama was constructed from about 250 images shot as 9 image HDR bracketed sets using the Magic Lantern OS modification for the Canon 5D MarkII. Stitched in PTGUI, patched in Photoshop. The polar projection was done using theFlexify plugin from Flaming Pear.

HDR monochrome image of Basilque Notre-Dame de l'Assomption; Neuchatel, Switzerland.

A lot of my time lately has been invested in producing a new book. My first book was about the 1000 year-old Collegiale de Neuchâtel. That book contained around 120 images that were created from or culled from a pool of 11'000 images that I had taken over 4 years. The book sold a few hundred copies, though I had hoped for more (and so did the publisher).

The new book that I'm working on is a book about the 112 year-old "red-church". It's another local landmark but is far less known / visited than the other church. However, this church is of historic interest and is a "Basilica"; making it important to the regional catholic population. I have far fewer images to choose from but still a nice collection. Spring is bit late in coming to Switzerland but this little purple flower heralds spring's arrival. This is one of the first flowers to appear this time of year. Normally, this flower is nearing the end of it's flowering but it hasn't quite reached full season yet. I also spotted the much rarer, white version of this on my walk in the woods.

From time-to-time, people ask me how I did an image. Here's a mini-tutorial on how I recently processed some images I took in Lucerne, Switzerland back in May 2012.

The making on an HDR, ( monochrome ) panorama.
Here's a full composite that shows the different stages in the production of HDR panorama, upper right corner. There is also a "normal" B&W - bottom middle, and an antique postcard done using the antique plate II preset of Silver Effects Pro 2 (SEP2).

7 bracketed sets -2, 0, +2
[1/8000, 1/2000, 1/500 ]

• The 21 bracketed images were produced using Photomatix Pro
• The 7 resulting HDR images were stitched in PTGUI Pro.
• Ghosting and one alignment fault were fixed in Photoshop 5

It's been a while since I share one of my "on-black" images. This is an easily recognizable, Bird of Paradise. The view is a bit atypical and I think that's why I like this as opposed to other images that show the full horizontal spread of the Bird of Paradise.

As I've talked about in the past, I often carry a piece of black satin and a set of spring loaded clamps in my camera bag. I then clamp the cloth behind a flower and then shoot an on-black floral image. This plant was growing in the local botanical garden and was left undisturbed. The stain is very light but also a dense black and, hung properly, can generate a nice black background that is easily replaced with a pure black background in Photoshop.

As many of you know, I "run" a private learning community called +52 Shades of Gray where we follow a project 52 schedule, mostly. Each week there is an assignment and a "lesson" on the topic for the week. We've been working pretty hard to master a lot of different ideas so I thought this week would be a good week to kick back a bit and do a replay / rework / retake of the assignments from weeks 1 to 8.

In the early days of the photography themes I was the master of multiple hash tags on a single image. I once had 25 hash tags on a single image that covered a at least one theme for everyday of the week. At the time there were about 140 photography themes and I was subtly poking fun at the proliferation of photography themes on G+. Now there are about 500 themes and possibly, that many communities.

Once again I would like to share with you an out-take from the images I took for my learning community #52SOG +52 Shades of Gray. This weeks topic was minimalism. I have to be honest and say that, even though I lead this community and I choose minimalism, I was a bit slow to get the images I wanted. I have been out shooting several times for this assignment and I just wasn't getting the pictures I wanted. I wasn't transforming my vision into a vision I could share. Today, I decided to try one of my favorite places in the Jura Mountains less than 20 miles from where I live. It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed my time in the mountains. Perhaps that's why I was able to find that mental place I was looking for.

I've been working on developing lessons / assignments for my B&W learning community, 52 Shades of Gray. This week's assignment is to shoot things on-black. Anyone familiar with my work knows that this is something I like to do and a technique I like to share. I was looking in the cabinets for something interesting to shoot and I found this Mono-ammonium Phosphate ( ? ) crystal that my son and I grew a few years ago. I've been thinking for some time that it would be fun to take a picture of this so I decided now was the time.

The setup is a fairly simple table-top studio with a black fleece material for the background. The lighting was a 6500K bulb and my silver lastolite reflector. The image was loaded into Lightroom, converted using Silver EFXs Pro 2, and cleaned up in Photoshop. The crystal is sitting on a mirror to help give a perfect black background.

I was working on preparing this weeks lesson for my Black and White [ private ] photography community. We are working on developing our ability to see in B&W. One of the cornerstones of Black and White photography is contrast. Very few things say contrast better than an intricate white flower on a black background.

Here's another image from my "Tete-de-Ran" series that I've been shooting the last few days. There was a nice blanket of new snow the other day when I was up there and I could have stayed out shooting for hours if I hadn't gotten cold. OK, the truth is, I stayed until the clouds cover ed the sun, then it was time to go have a hot coffee and a piece of tart at the hotel, La Clef des Champs.

This is a little subtle in thumbnail mode. I did very little to this image beyond a basic conversion to B&W. The sunburst is natural - no enhancement at all.

I was out walking and taking pictures this afternoon and I took a 360° panorama from this spot, but I only processed 6 images to produce this 150° x 86° panorama. Processed using Lightroom, Photoshop, SEP2, and some final tweaks in Lightroom.

I wanted a really deep dof so I shot this at f/22, ISO 200, 1/125 sec, 16mm using my Canon 5D Mark II my Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L lens on a tripod. I took a bracketed set so I could do an HDR if I wanted to but chose the middle set and blended two differently processed copies in SEP2.

There seems to be so many places to share these images any more that I'm not sure where to share it. I could share it with my own Black and White Photography community, with the B&W Fine Art community, with my B&W learning community, with 4 monochrome photography themes, panorama, landscape but, I think I'll just share it from my ownstream an... more »

Sometimes it seems you can't win for losing, as the saying goes. I am who I am. If you think I change my mind too often, I'm sorry. If you think I'm too concerned with follower count, I'm sorry. If you follow me only because you would like to be in one of my circles, don't - it would seem that all you care about is follower count. <sly grin>. What you see is what you get. I may be wrong, misguided, or confused but what you see is the real-deal. If you don't like what you see, don't follow me. If you ask me to take part in something because I have a fair number of followers, don't give me crap about my follower count. If you find the numbers interesting, don't give me crap about the numbers. Never equate numbers with quality.

I was watching some Christmas cooking shows on TV with my wife this afternoon and I noticed that the sky outside the apartment window had the "special" glow thatI have come to recognize as a good photo opportunity. I almost talked myself out of going up on the roof with the camera because I know there is this large crane with a stone's through of my roof. I usually head to the roof to get a photo of the church / castle silhouetted to the right. I'm sure that many of you have seen many different views of the chateau here in my stream. Today though, I think that unwanted crane stole the show.

This is a 4 image panorama and the amount of post processing is minimal. It was really colorful and didn't need too much interference from me.

In the spring, the Jura Mountains are covered in fields of wild daffodils and crocus. I have lived here in Switzerland for going on 14 years but only recently discovered this springtime wonderland. Being the B&W aficionado that I am, I couldn't resist converting this daffodil to Black and White. I carry a black satin cloth in my camera bag that I use so that I can shoot flowers "on-black" in their natural state with natural light.

This is the Creux du Van, in the canton of Neuchatel. Rated the top attraction in the region by tripadvisor.com. In 2012, I took two different groups to see the Creux du Van. PLUS Post! for WEEK 2 of my participation in the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers by +Robin Griggs Wood - thank you Robin.

Week two was an eventful week for me which left me wondering if I was going to stay with the program, not because of the program but because of life's intrusions into physical and mental reality. The Mentorship program is a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved to grow as photographer and as artist.

This past week the program focused on identifying what is the main subject of an image, what are the supporting actors, and what things take away form the image. As a sesoned photographer I would have thought this would be very easy but it wasn't as easy as I expected. It seems that I'm far less analytic about it than I thought. Thank you everyone for the well wishes. It's more-or-less easy to talk about all of the things not going our way over the last year+- It's much harder to talk about the effect that it has on me and my family. Individually and collectively, it's been a difficult 14 months, if I go back to when I dropped my camera and broke it and my newest and most expensive lens.

My wife, rightfully so, get's unhappy with me when I start to suggest that, I wonder each day whether or not I even want to get out of bed. That each time I start to think that maybe we have turned a corner, something new happens; like today. When I start to tell you that things aren't horrible, just bad, I worry that fate is still working on that. At 61, I'm not ancient, but I'm not youngeno... more »

This is the forth image of my series, "My personal best of 2012", I present to you, this image taken in the summer of 2010, processed and shared in 2012. This is a stitched, Long Exposure panorama.

This is the Chateau de Sully sur Loire. One of the many magnificent castles along the Loire River in France. While it's not evident here, the image was taken at Blue Hour, about an hour after sunset.
