With the spread of H9N7 avian flu in mainland China, let's keep in mind that there's little (if any) evidence to suggest traditional Chinese remedies, such as "ban lan gan", is an effective treatment or preventative option.

Best precautions so far remains practicing proper hand hygiene and staying away from livestock.

A stunningly irrational and outrageous encounter with an anti-feminist "atheist" who believes rape victims deserves being raped. Recommend all to check this out - the article gives a nice insight to what feminism and atheism is about, too.

Organism of the Day #animals #animalsrule

The Ursus malayanus, commonly known as the Sun bear, is a species of bear found in the southern parts of Asia. Alongside their distinctive yellow-orange marking on their chests, sun bears are also the smallest species in the bear family, with males reaching a weight of 70 kg and females reaching one of 40 kg. However, they do have a very long tongue (of up to around 25 cm) used for extracting honey from beehives.

Unlike many other species of bears, sun bears do not hibernate and hence reproduces around the year. They are also mainly nocturnal and resides on trees, and although they are omnivorous sun bears feed on much smaller prey than other bears, primarily small invertebrates and insects.

Despite their small size, they are known to be quite fierce creatures and therefore have little predators. If they were to be... more »

It's back! :D Expand this post to see a summary of past OotD's!

Organism of the Day
The Orcinus orca, commonly known as killer whales or orca, is the largest species of the oceanic dolphin family. They are apex predators with no natural predators, and can be found in all the oceans of the world, including polar regions.

Orcas are have an incredibly diverse diet. Although some feed exclusively on fish, many orca groups have been found to feed on other sources, such as other oceanic mammals and birds. Some orca packs have even been observed hunting blue whales and other large baleen whales. Studies have also shown that orcas may be very intelligent creatures, and definitely sport complex social systems.

Today there are ongoing discussions over whether orcas can still be classified as an individual species. Due to varying appearance and... more »

Astronomers have deduced the true color of the Milky Way Galaxy

You can learn a lot about a galaxy based solely on its color. How old it is, whether it's still producing stars, the age of the stars themselves — these are all questions that a galaxy's color can help answer. But our position relative to the Milky Way (i.e. the fact that we're actually inside it) means our perception of its true color is skewed. Now at last, astronomers have determined the color of our galaxy as it would appear from an outsider's perspective. So just how milky looking is the Milky Way really?

It's white. But not just any white. According to Jeffrey Newman and Tim Licquia — who deduced the Milky Way's hue by averaging data from 1,000 similar galaxies — the galaxy resembles the color of a fresh spring snow in the hours shortly after dawn, or "roughly halfway betweenthe l... more »

Fifteen years after the handover, many people here identify themselves as "Hong Kongers" rather than "Chinese."

(This separate identity comes with more and more cases of growing resentment toward Mainland Chinese -- from last weekend's Dolce & Gabbana protest after complaints that the store favored Mainlanders over locals, to reports of pregnant Mainland women crossing the border to exploit Hong Kong's medical system.)

And Beijing is most displeased.

Wait, wait, wait. So they essentially STALKED a transgender policewoman in order to publicize her gender preferences as FRONT PAGE NEWS, essentially naming and shaming her in front of the Hong Kong populace? :S Is there no such thing as respect for others and their privacy anymore? #Hong_Kong #LGBT

Summary for the Non-Chinese: In short, "Apple Daily" (which is arguably one of the largest and most influential newspapers here in Hong Kong) ran a front page news article on a transgender policewoman who, due to police guidelines, have to dress up as a male police officer at work, and returns to her normal attire afterwards. Based on the video below and the photographs shown in the newspaper, it's evident that they did not ask for permission nor an interview. They seemed to have just hid in places to get snapshots of her in order to publish such an "entertaining" weekday... more »

To All #Opera Users

You can access the new Google bar and Google+ properly by:

1) Going to any Google site (e.g. Google+) and right-click "Inspect element".
2) Select the "Network" tab and then "Network options".
3) Under Global Header Overrides, select "Enable global header overrides".
4) In the "Presets" options box, select "Chrome 12" then "Save".
5) Reload the site.

It seems rather erratic though. Sometimes it keeps the setting for a while, but often the setting gets lost on each refresh/new loading of the site, so it makes for a huge nuisance having to go through the same steps everytime. I've also heard of performance issues (though I haven't experienced them) so use at your own caution!

If Opera can seemingly load the Google bar properly, why might... more »

Organism of the Day

The Pteropus vampyrus, commonly known as the Large Flying Fox, is amongst the larges species of bats. Weighing between 0.6 to 1.1 kg, they have an average wingspan of 1.5 m - almost the height of many humans.

The name "Large Flying Fox" is derived from its fox-like face, and is herbivorous, feeding exclusively on fruits. They tend to be dark in colour when young, and become lighter in colour as they mature. They also inhabit a variety of habitats up to altitudes of 1 370 m, and are (as bats are) nocturnal creatures.

Today, the Large Flying Fox is classified as "near threatened" in its conservation status, due to a significant decline in population sizes, loss of habitat and being harvested for food.
