Is the West still going to continue to help the Syrian rebels? Maybe it's time that both sides go. The remaining people - civilians who are caught in the middle of this civil war - should be the ones who form the government. :(

Anti-abuse campaign uses lenticular printing to show different ad to adults, children

ANAR Foundation manages in Spain the european unique phone number 116 111, to attend children and teenagers under a risk situation. On this telephone number, only for minors, they can find the help they need in a totally anonymous and confidential way.

But, how can we get our message to a child abuse victim, even when they are accompanied by their aggressor?

Knowing the average height for adults and children under 10,GREY has created two different messages. Using an outdoor lenticular we show adults an awareness message, while children see a message where we offer them our help and show them the telephone number. A message only for children.

...two-and-a-half year old Hannah Warren just became the youngest person in history to receive a bioengineered organ transplant, a new windpipe made of a synthetic scaffold and her own stem cells. The nine-hour long procedure was performed April 9th, at Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria, but the results were just made public. Doctors expect that Warren will be able to return home in a few months and breathe, eat, drink and swallow using the new windpipe, all of which she couldn't do without the aid of machines until now.

Acer Aspire R7

Windows 8 might not be very successful, but the amount of innovation in laptop design since its release is amazing. :)

Putting the keyboard before the trackpad is an awesome idea. With a touchscreen, having a trackpad is redundant for most users - provided the screen is easy to reach out to and use.

But the touchscreen is adjustable. You can bring it closer, which makes it easier to touch while your hands are on the keyboard.

For the times you do need to use the trackpad, you can push the screen back and use it. :)

It'll probably be very awkward the first few times you play a game like Skyrim though...

Hope I get to test it soon ^_^

I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to read the following few paragraphs. This is why we are voting for change tomorrow.

-----
Back in 1994, the then Chief Minister of Malacca, Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, was reported to have raped a 15-year old Malay school girl (under Malaysian law, sex with a minor constitutes statutory rape). Lim Guan Eng, currently the Chief Minister of Penang and the then MP for Kota Melaka, spoke out against the rape of a minor after the girl’s grandmother-cum-guardian, who was also Lim’s constituent, turned to him for help.

However, far from deserving justice, both Lim and the school girl received their “dues”. Lim was jailed for 18 months for speaking up against the rape. However, released after 12 months on August 25, 1999, due to his incarceration, he was disallowed from standing for election to public office for a periodof 5 ye... more »

Hangouts Remote Desktop: tech support with a personal touch

For those of you who play tech support for friends and family, there’s now a Hangouts app to make things easier -- powered by the same technology behind Chrome Remote Desktop.

Hangouts Remote Desktop lets you help others by controlling their computer remotely (with their permission, of course). And because you’re both in a Hangout, you can talk with and see each other during the session.

To get started, just start a Hangout and click View More Apps > Add Apps > Hangouts Remote Desktop.

Let us know what you think, and please keep the feedback coming!

William Robertson Miniature Tool Chest

It’s almost difficult to comprehend that this replica of an 18th century gentleman’s tool chest, packed with tools, is only 2 inches long. It is a masterful 1/12 scale reproduction based on the Hewitt chest at Colonial Williamsburg and is by celebrated miniaturist William Robertson.

The chest is primarily made from mopane wood which looks like mahogany in scale and oxidizes similarly. The secondary wood is Swiss pear.

There are also cast brass Rococo drop handles as well as beaded backplates. It should also be noted that the miniscule lock actually works, and the label on the underside of the lid is printed on 18th century paper — in lettering to perfect scale of course.

As you would expect from something so masterfully created, the tool chest was made with thesame con... more »

The First Elevated-Pin Braille Smartphone Gets A Prototype #India   #Tech
Incoming text gets translated into braille through little pins, constantly moving up and down to convey what's happening in the phone.

The creators, led by inventor Sumit Dagar, are shooting for a release by the end of 2013. Starting price? Just less than 10,000 rupees, or about $185.

With smartphone interaction mostly relying on sight, since there's no tactile difference to what's on the screen, some blind people have turned to apps to make up the difference. These apps can do some pretty impressive things, like determine the denomination of currency or read text out loud, rendering braille unnecessary for some tasks. But those were workarounds, to make up for the inability to create an actual braille interface. For about three years, a team of inventors in India haveb... more »

For the viewers, at least.

The contestants (at least the ones who were smarter - but not smart enough to not join the show) would probably be trying to look as disinterested as they possibly could so that the crocodiles feel hurt and crawl back into their pond to mope while the embarassed producers hurry the contestants out with cheques.

( The producers later on go back with some flowers and bacon to apologize to the crocs. o_O )

Giant Ammonite Fossils

A few weeks ago Ferrebeekeeper featured a post about belemnites, extinct cephalopods from the Mesozoic which teemed in immense schools through the reptile-haunted oceans of that bygone era.  Yet belemnites were certainly not the only cephalopods which swam in the Mesozoic seas.  Numerous shelled cephalopods—the ammonites—were widespread in every sort of marine habitat.
Ammonites are personal favorites of mine so I am not going to write a comprehensive explanation/description of the subclass.  Instead I wish to provide you with an idea of how big ammonites could get by providing a few pictures of large ammonite fossils which have been discovered.

Imagine these monsters jetting through the water with huge tentacles and big intelligent eyes scanning for giant predatory reptiles and you will have a better idea of the MesozoicOceans!<... more »

The citizen security force will be formed on the lines of Nitish Kumar's state auxiliary police (SAP) in Bihar and would be supervised by retired army officers, it said.

Young people would be enrolled in the force would be given commando training to handle all kinds of situation, especially those related to women's safety.

"These cadets would work under retired army officers and would be present at the ward level. This force would work as security guards and would ensure security of all Delhi-ites at all possible levels."

Do you know that there is a country up for sale? Do you know that its finance, agriculture and retail sectors are being put ‘on the market’? Perhaps you are already aware of this due to various media reports. But then again, maybe you are not because it’s all being carried out behind closed doors in Brussels. The EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), something that could fundamentally restructure Indian society and impact the lives of hundreds of millions, is being negotiated ‘on the behalf of the public’ by politicians on both sides who are champions of the type of economic liberalisation that has already been responsible for bankrupting many Western economies.

His brother 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed this morning following a gun fight

The pair's uncle and father have spoken out with Dzhokhar revealed as a medical student with dreams of becoming a doctor described as a 'true angel' by his father

Appears he was led to fundamentalism by his brother who became increasingly radicalized over the past five months posting numerous videos on YouTube about Jihad

Boston Marathon Blasts "Suspects"

The men appear to be wearing Navy Seal attire which is also the same standard issue Craft International uniform used by the private security firm.

The media seemed primed to blame the the attacks on white right-wing extremists, but as soon as the photos of the middle eastern looking individuals emerged, reports that an arrest had been made were retracted and the FBI cancelled a planned press conference.

The whole official narrative behind the Boston bombings is now in complete disarray as a result of these photos being released yesterday on the Internet.

There seems to be no rational explanation for why two employees of a private security firm would be on the scene of the blasts carrying large black backpacks similar to those used in the actual attack unless they were involved in some... more »

Celebrate the Mistakes that Don't Happen #HBR
At the very end of 1998, NASA launched a much-anticipated robotic space probe called the Mars Climate Orbiter. Its mission was to collect data about the atmosphere, and act as a communications relay for the Mars Polar Lander. Nearly ten months later, it arrived at the red planet, only to disappear just as it was supposed to establish an orbit. It had come, unintentionally, 100 kilometers closer to the planet's surface than originally planned, which was 25 kilometers beneath the level at which it could properly function. Instead of orbiting Mars, it plowed right through the atmosphere (possibly disintegrating) and was lost to us forever, taking $125 million in American taxpayer dollars with it.

The problem, it was later discovered, was one of unit conversion. The team of engineers at NASA worked in metric units (the standard... more »
