"Human Beacon"
My goodness. Two panos in two days.
This is a self-portrait from last night at Lake Minnewanka, a place where I hang out a lot. Another warm, calm, starry night in the mountains. And an amazing array of colours, especially with the greens brought out by the headlamp.
12 vertical images, Canon 5D Mk III, 24mm f/1.4L lens at f/1.8, ISO 1600, 30 seconds.

Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower
This morning during my workshop we setup to capture the Eta Aquarids meteor shower, at 2:30am we saw this giant meteor streak across the sky over Devil's Tower, what a sight!
Over the weekend several people signed up for my September workshop at Arches, there is only one spot left!

I noticed this behavior in damselflies a few years ago and managed to get some video today. On mornings with a heavy dew, they scoot up a blade of grass, building a large drop of water. Then they manipulate it with their front set(s) of legs. I assume they are drinking from the water blob.

The Eye of Sauron
I took this shot of a Jack in the Pulpit Arisaema triphyllum plant yesterday. I was concentrating on the spider and didn't notice until much later that the top looks eerily like an eye.

I have wanted to try my hand at concert photography for a while. Last night I was given the opportunity to work a Willie Nelson concert in my home town. I was amazed that this (almost) 80 year old star played for 90 minutes straight to a very happy crowd. Here is one from the show. I was fortunate enough to have full access and even spent a great deal of time leaning on the stage, snapping away.

If you want to feel small, find some dark sky, crank up your ISO and take a 30 second exposure. Your camera sensor will capture so much more than you can see with the naked eye. This was taken 2 nights ago at Cedar Creek State Park, here in West Virginia.

What Is A Memory Worth ?
They tell us that a picture is worth a thousand words. If that is the case I've taken whole library's worth of photos, but what is a memory worth.\
I found this camera last week on Craigslist for $125.00. The person who sold it was not a photographer; his father purchased the camera new in the late 60's. I've recently had a re-kindling of my love for film. When I saw this ad, I pounced. Notice that the lens is a 55mm f/1.2, and what you cannot see is that this camera sat in it's case for the last 14 years. The previous owner was obviously VERY careful with his equipment-it is flawless. Ed Mika, from Canada, machines a replacement mount for this lens that will allow me to put it right on my 5D2. It even has a chip for focus confirmation.
Ever since I met the man in his home to purchase this beauty I've considered some of... more »

Hello everyone - hope this Monday is finding you well! Your response to Issue #1 of Exposed absolutely exceeded our expectations in every way, and with that in mind, we've taken a little extra time to be sure to bring you the best possible magazine we can. We've made a few changes here and there since the first issue - you can read more about those in the editor's column this month - but the most notable change is a simple one that we think you'll be most excited about:

Sorry about the late post. We are in a state of emergency in West Virginia with heavy storm damage. I am on my third day without electricity, but otherwise all is well. 236 Ambassadors for Photography
At the beginning of the month +Photography Decathlon asked for suggestions for who should represent each of the 10 styles of photography that will be represented at this years competition in October. (Teach and judge.)
The post was well received getting 400+ shares and many hundred comments on several different shares.
There were 536 suggestions (thankfully many repeated) and in the end these 236 photographers.
I should share
It dawned on me that people out there really believe in these photographers and therefore a shared list/circle of these people would truly be of a great benefit to all.
Add Shared Circle
Perhaps you're already following most of them, perhaps only a few... I suggest you, create a little circle and try them all out, I'll bet you'll find some hidden gems like I ha... more »

What If I Died Tomorrow ?
At my mother's house is a drawer full of old photographs. I'm sure there are drawers and shoe boxes around the world with faded snapshots from the past. I have good intentions to scan and save these memories, and I even made a trip there with a scanner once, but I never seem to find the time. My mother is the only person left who knows who some of these people are, so I hope to get off my butt and preserve these memories while there is time.
Thinking about this today made me wonder What if I died tomorrow ? I have a bunch of external drives with terabytes of data. Would anyone even look at my raw images ? Would anyone even care about the work that has consumed me for years ? After all, these are only little boxes of electronics, not a photo or album that you can hold in your hands.
I think I need a plan, and I'm... more »

E N J O Y the release of the updated High Quality Nature Photographer Circle v 4.0!
A huge THANK YOU to all the people (some have been exceptional generous) who did awesome nominations!!!
Now it is all up to you if this will become another great success.
Members are always very kind and supportive
Some notes about sharing for the new ones:
We all want to be in a circle to get some more attention and friends. Being in a circle which is not re-shared is pointless, we have no re-share police, but
if YOU want to SUPPORT please ADD this circle to yours AND RE-SHARE publicly, so everyone benefits even the people that else never would see the circle and you give them a chance to add.
This is just the way it is. Thank you in advance!
