Getting Lost S01E19: Deus Ex Machina
John is getting aggravated by their failure to break into the hatch. He also injures his leg and doesn't feel it--bringing him fear his injury is back. But the island will send a sign on how to open it. John then sees a plane crashing, his mother in the jungle and then a bloodied up Boone.
The next morning he and Boone go tracking for the plane and discover both it and the long-dead corpse of a gun-toting Catholic priest from Nigeria. John's ability to walk is deteriorating. Locke shares his walking miracle with Boone, that the island healed him and is now punishing him for something. Fate controls them. They then find the plane crashed up on the edge of a short cliff and a tree.
John unable to walk, Boone scales his way to the tree. The plane shifts and throws another priest-corpse on him. The plane is filled with... more »

Getting Lost S01E18: Numbers
I love this episode. My favorite of season one, after the pilot.
Hurley's looking at the papers Sayid stole from Rousseau and sees a sequence of numbers. Jump to Hurley's flashback where we see Hurley in a fast food uniform watching the lottery drawing...and he wins with the same numbers. Rich Hurley wants to do wonderful things for his family, unfortunately bad luck seems to follow him everywhere now: his grandfather dies right next to him while he's talking to news anchors; Father Aguilar getting struck by lightning at the funeral; his brother's wife leaving him for a waitress; he injures his mother while showing her the house he bought for her, which is on fire, and then is arrested before he can call 911 by racial profiling policemen; his shoe company catches fire; someone jumps off a building while his accountant is informing him... more »

Getting Lost S01E17: In Translation
Sun looks stunningly beautiful on her wedding day (as opposed to her usual "simply" beautiful.
Everyone is trying to rescue Sun from Jin this episode. Our back story is a closer examination of Jin's transformation from smitten puppy to cold mafia enforcer. They have such a screwed up life pre-island. There's no doubt that this island saved them.
Sayid and Shannon beginning to date is awkward and yucky. Even this early, she's clearly not a good fit for him as anything but "youthful girl to wash away his dark past unsuccessfully."
Michael's raft is coming along quickly. Sawyer's booked passage on it. Then someone torches it. Everyone wants to blame Jin since he and Michael had that confrontation on the beach.
"Everyone gets a new life on this island, Shannon. Maybe... more »

Getting Lost S01E16: Outlaws
Never trust a Terminator.
How disturbing was that opening scene where we live through Sawyer's mother-father murder-suicide with them?
This is the episode where dream boar leads Sawyer on a chase through the jungle; Sawyer also hears the whispers in the jungle. Kate joins him and they play "I never" over drinks form the in-flight liquor cart. We learn interesting facts about Kate: she's been married and she's killed a man (and apparently Sawyer has too). In the morning they wake to find the boar attacked their camp and ravaged Sawyer's stuff but not Kate's.
Back story has the T-1000 sending Sawyer to Australia to kill the real Sawyer, finally. After failing to kill his quarry upon their first meeting, he heads to a bar and meets Christian Shepherd. They share drinks. Christian unloads about... more »

Getting Lost S01E15: Homecoming
Charlie, after Jack and Kate, is the third character to get a second flashback episode (and still no episode for Hurley at this point, or Rose, as far as other recurring survivors go). Are we given this heightened focus because Charlie is supposed to be a more important character than he seems on the surface?
Conveniently so Claire can't tell everyone about the Others, annoyingly because it's such a cheesy soap opera trope, Claire has amnesia. At least Sayid is calling bullshit.
See Jin figure out Sun understands Eanglish. Personally, I love how we aren't given subtitles when they speak Korean to anyone else, but are given subtitles when they speak to each other. It's important because we need to know their interactions in order to know them, but when they speak to everyone else, it's a way to continue driving into... more »

Before I write anything else, I'm going to say this: if what I say butthurts you terribly, just reshare the post and rant with your friends.
Ok, this is directed primarily to the recent crop of incredibly whiny atheists.
See, here's the thing, I'm neither an atheist, nor a theist. I'm with Neil deGrasse Tyson on this, except I prefer the only "ist" term used for me is "realist".
But lately, I've been seeing atheists complaining on LGBTI content, posts about racism, misogyny, homophobia, etc., all with the same comments about how abused they are. Its as if lately the majority of previously intelligent and independent-minded atheists on G+ have become whiny putzes determined to just go on and on about how victimized they are in our society.
I've never seen an atheist beat to death in the US over their non-belief. I&... more »

Getting Lost S01E14: Special
OK, finally the Michael episode. Walt's mom is Cam from Bones. Michael gives up his art to support Cam and the baby. Good father. We learn Michael wasn't in Walt's life because Cam left Michael and took Walt to Amsterdam for a job opportunity. Michael later decides he's going to retrieve Walt from Cam and forgets how to check the street before crossing so he gets hit by a car. Later Cam is revealed as Susan and I'll call her that from here on. She's marrying her boss and paying Michael's medical bills and, by the way, wants Michael to relinquish parental rights so Brian can adopt. Michael makes a decision I never would be able to. Susan dies and Brian doesn't want Walt, so he foists him back on Michael. "There's something about" Walt that makes him "different somehow" and "things happen." Like... more »

Getting Lost S01E13: Hearts and Minds
Something that irritates me right away with this episode: Jack and Kate. It seems every time Kate does something shady and deceitful at Jack he gets all condescendy and aggravated. They end on bad, non-trusting terms. And then come the next episode, they're chummy again.
Boone and Shannon flashback episode. We learn they are step-siblings.We also learn that Boone has a history of "saving" Shannon from bad boyfriends by bribing them into leaving her.
Locke tells Boone to stay on Sayid's good graces because they'll need him on "their side." Their side for what?
Sun has started a garden. Score one for the good guys doing something smart. Meanwhile, people are questioning why Locke isn't bringing them more boar. Locke assaults Boone and leaves him tied up in the jungle. We add Kate to the... more »

Getting Lost S01E12: Whatever the Case May Be
We open on Kate in the jungle alone, climbing trees and harvesting fruit. Then Sawyer shows up and they find a waterfall slash swimming hole. Sawyer had no problem swimming naked in earlier episodes, why stay dressed now. Hasn't he ever worn wet jeans to know how awesomely horrible they feel? Oh hey, they find some dead bodies from the plane! Guess the frolicking's over. They find a mystery suitcase that's important to Kate but she wants to play nonchalant with Sawyer over it. Yawn.
Meanwhile, the beach is going through abnormal tide shifts that suddenly try to wash everything on the beach out to sea. Foreshadowing that the island moves?
Sayid approaches Shannon for aid translating the maps and papers he stole from Rousseau. Locke and Boone are keeping their hatch discovery secret and beginning excavation.... more »

Getting Lost S01E11: All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues
I love the name of this episode. If you've been paying attention, since day one I've been keeping a running log of characters with daddy issues as that's something I find to be a common thread amongst the characters.
Jack and Hunter Locke are on the trail of abducted Claire and Charlie. Locke wants to be cautious and organize a search party due to the risk of more than one abductor, Jack wants to be solo hero and trailblaze ahead. Locke's search party adds "I Can't Let Jack Do Anything Without Me" Kate and "I Always Have to Prove I'm a Big Boy and Hero Too" Boone. Locke actually makes a very logical argument for why Jack shouldn't be in the rescue group: as the only doctor, risking him for this sort of mission isn't good for the health of the group.

Getting Lost: S01E10: Raised By Another
Seeing the title I worried this would be a Michael episode. I never was overly fond of Michael episodes. He makes all the sort of fathering decisions that make me want to shake a person and smack them. We'll get to that when it's actually his episode.
Claire has a nightmare where she wakes up to find her unborn baby's been taken from her and she traipses through the jungle after its cries. She runs into Locke playing with tarot cards and his eyes replaced by the black and white stones. She finds a bassinet filled with blood and wakes up screaming. And bleeding.
Just how much foreshadowing is crammed into this nightmare? Revelation that oracular abilities are entirely responsible for her being on the island. The transformation of Locke. Claire's abduction and repeated losses of Aaron. Interesting to see that... more »

Getting Lost S01E09: Solitary
Sayid!
Sayid finds a cable going off into the ocean on one end and the jungle on the other, heading off to find where the jungle end leads. Along the way he finds traps galore, gets injured and gets captured by a strange woman looking for someone named Alex (her child).
We learn of Rousseau's boat getting shipwrecked after it's navigation went awry. Our first hint that something about the island is doing this. We also learn of The Others as voices she hears whispering in the jungle, and of the existence of something called The Black Rock. Once he's released by Rousseau, Sayid also begins hearing the voices of The Others. Are they real voices or has he caught some sort of insanity from Danielle, a shared delusion of sorts?
I think Kate lets Jack off too easily for his role in the previous episode's torture... more »

To be extremely clear: I don't care where you fall on the political spectrum, if you are posting things that capitalize on politicizing tragedy or making fun of tragedy in any way, I do not want to fucking see it. Unless you are 1-degree of separation from the tragedy itself, I don't want to see you politicizing the deaths or suffering of others. I don't care about your stance on gun control, whichever side you fall on, and don't want to see you capitalizing on the deaths of children at Sandy Hook or anywhere else. I mean we all were too and everything but it seems to be pretty prevalent now and i think because the internet and harassment and the potential is so massive so I'm gonna ask you tonight if you know a gay kid, if you know one just reach out and just go "It's cool man. God made you beautiful. Grow up so you can make our world better. You're a gift, you're a gift!" Even after her death, Thatcher's legacy is still hurting millions of people.
Along with President Ronald Reagan, with whom she helped define modern conservatism, Thatcher developed a strain of capitalism that became dominant around the world with the fall of communism. But she also helped unleash market forces and unravel social compacts in ways that many societies have yet to come to grips with.
Even on the day of her death, leaders and citizens from Cyprus to Portugal to Washington were enmeshed in emotional debates over the policies that defined her legacy. Those cross currents continue to play out in her own country, a laboratory even now for austerity policies.

Getting Lost: S01E08: Confidence Man
More naked Sawyer, ladies! Or maybe just +Adrienne Kent .
We get a glimpse of Sawyer pulling his primary con of bedding the ladies and getting them and their husbands to clean out their money into a scheme of his. Fairly cliched, but fine, and since we later learn it's a copy of an older con's con, maybe a cliche is more forgivable. And then at the end, when he sees the mark's kid he turns and walks away.
This episode really shoves the polarity of Sawyer and Jack in our faces with Kate as the one who will continue to go back and forth between the two of them. We learn about Sawyer's letter, and what it reads. And later, what it really means.
Just how fucked in the head is Sawyer to take the name of the man who destroyed his childhood? Becoming the thing he's hunting? More cliches.

Getting Lost: S01E07: The Moth
This episode follows Charlie on the island and in the past, featuring his descent into drug addiction and Locke's attempts to help him curb his addiction. Locke uses his story of the moth to get across the message that we have to endure the struggles in life that come before us in order to grow as strong as we can--that letting others help do our work for us makes us weaker. It's a good notion but does overlook the value of community and everyone helping one another to thrive. When must someone face their struggles alone and when is it better to have someone to lean on? Locke's argument this episode seems to be never.
If the story weren't a strong enough metaphor for Charlie's struggle with addiction, they drive it in more bluntly by literally having Charlie dig his way into his own "cocoon" to save Jack from the cave... more »

I have a 160gb iPod. Maybe 100mb of that is Lemonheads (including solo Evan Dando stuff), so it seems like the universe is telling me something (of course it isn't, that would be ridiculous) when my iPod, on shuffle, feeds me 5 of their songs in under 24 hours.
Always puts me in a lighter, sing-along headspace. It's been a nice counterpoint to an otherwise stressful week.

When I worked at McDonalds, I'd go to the back room and steal the pickle slices and pierce them on my nipple rings. I would go all day sporting my salty/sweet secret under my shirt. I felt like such a badass. Then at the end of the day, one one of my last orders, I'd wait for someone to order a McDouble "for here". . .I would then sneak around to the kitchen and sneak my nipple slices onto the burger. After they received their order I would watch them eat the McDouble. The joy and arousal I got from watching them chew, swallow and digest the pickles that were in contact with my skin was almost orgasmic. To think that someones body was holding a little bit of me inside them made me feel dominant. Like a man. Like I was completing a metamorphosis that would someday save humanity. I was winning.
