Samantha Villenave1,064,545+Art+Talk #16, an interview with +Kurt Ankeny, hosted by myself and +Lena Levin .I asked Kurt for a bio. What he gave me are these beautiful words."I like to describe myself as an autodidact, but that's not really true at all. If anything, I'm a bibliodidact. Some of the works most important to my formation were How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Those two were my lifeline for many critical years of development. In fact, I had given away my copy of Anatomy Lessons,  when I started recognizing images from it in the paintings I was looking at. I hadn't realized how deeply those images penetrated. So I had to buy myself a replacement copy. Here's a problem I have: all writing about art tends to circumvent the art itself. I'm not saying one shouldn't write about art, but it's deceptive to cement into prose a reaction to a piece that depends wholly on the time, circumstances, education, experience, and readiness of the individual viewer looking at it and reacting or responding. So, what you have a is a snapshot of a very, very narrow point where two individuals connected for a moment in time.So those qualms aside, I'm a relatively new painter. I've only been painting for about seven years. Four of them what I would consider "full-time". Painting, as most of us who practice with any determination and ambition know, is a very slow burn. Cy Twombly told Jenny Saville to try and remain ignored for as long as possible. And that is good advice as long as one can manage it. Because painting, especially since the modernist movement, is a vast ocean of possibilities and it takes many canvases to get your bearings.I guess that's my long-winded way of saying that I really don't know what I'm doing yet. I know, I know. One isn't supposed to undercut one's brand and reputation with such nonsense and honesty. "I don't know what I'm doing" does not mean "I don't know where I'm going." I do have plans, I have grand ideas and ambitions. It's just that there's a lot of white space on the map between where I stand now and Mount Accomplishment. I think that the fissure between abstraction and figuration is an obvious point of interest. Today's painters are swarming on that likeArt+Talk interview with painter Kurt Ankeny2012-11-04 20:00:0022

Dustin W. Stout26,662The Most Creative and Inspiring People on Google+As the first of my #circlesplosion  shares, this crowd-curated circle is comprised of those people who have been personally endorsed as some of the most creative and inspiring people on Google+.These folks are artists, designers, photographers, crafters, painters, musicians, videographers, marketers, and all around creators of things here on Google+.If you're a creator of things and want to connect with more people who create and inspire, add this circle.  Keep watch of the people in this stream and connect with the people you resonate with. About #circlesplosionAs I discussed in my introduction to #circlesplosion  (here - dustn.tv/circlesplosion/) managing and curating your circles will ultimately give you the greatest experience here on Google+. In an effort to connect people with passion, with other people with those same passions, I have resolved to share these crowd-curated circles with the world. I hope this group gives you as much value as it has me! Meirav M.7,705Meirav's 42some people have been sharing circles of 100, but me, I like smaller numbers. and seriously, as someone who has under 200 people circled in total, picking 100 would be way over the top. so I went for the obvious number of 42 :)These are not my top favourite 42 or my most relevant according to some algorithm or anything of the sort. And I will not tell you that they are the most wonderful people on earth, the creme de la creme of plusland, the greatest engagers or influencers or whatever managementspeak term is the word du jour. I'll be honest with you, as I tend to be when I'm not making up stories about penguins and stuff, and tell you the truth:These are all people I have had in my circles for a while and I like having them in my circles. They've grown on me. They've become part of my pluslife. I can't know if you'll also enjoy having them in your circles, because I'm not you and you're not me, we have different interests and different preferences and just as you might prefer a different ice cream flavour (I'm a Ben & Jerry's cookie dough gal) you are likely to find different people interesting or fun - but here's a circle of 42 people for you to try out if you would like to, and if you find that some of them are not quite your scene then you can always uncircle them. There's no "till death us do part" in plusland :)and no, you absolutely don't have to add them. It's just in case you are looking for more people to populate your stream. You are, in any case, welcome to cookies from the penguin's self-replenishing jar. We will always have cookies. #SharedCircles  2013-08-10 00:32:3242615
Mz Maau10,204I rarely share circles, and I regret to inform, this is not the promised #CircleDirk , rather, it's a circle I've been semi-maintaining since last spring, when it was created for +Pierce Arner to jump-start his Plus experience.Today, I'm resharing the current version on behalf of +Søren Dalsgaard Brath, who, like Pierce, is looking for new content for his stream.I figure he and I probably have a chunk of overlap, so I've added a few extras he might not yet know about. Some notes about the curation of this circle:I've tried to set aside those who have not posted recently, and I've tried to only include those who post publicly, or to extended circles.  I may have missed a few, and if you're in this circle and would like to be permanently removed, please let me know. This is not the final version, as I'm not sure such a thing is possible. This circle DOES come with a warning:You will, most likely, NOT enjoy everyone in this circle.  I, like many, have eclectic tastes, and I'm still a bit gun-shy after seeing some of the explosions from last year's crossing of the streams, so PLEASE, edit this circle to your liking with that in mind.If I ping you, you're in the circle.  There is no expectation or requirement to add this circle, it's merely a courtesy ping.  Again, if you would like to be removed from any future circle shares, please let me know. And yes, I promise, I'm still working on the #CircleDirk .Also note:  This is NOT an indication of who I like best, though some are included in this circle.  It is simply meant to be a sample of the diversity I follow.#PinkAndFluffyPersonsOfQuestionableRepute2013-06-22 16:38:09164143576

Aaron Wood213,460In the entire time I've been here on G+ I've never shared a circle of my own. I've shared a few circles that other compiled, but never something picked from the people I'm following.I know, I know... very selfish of me, especially since I've been in a lot of circle shares since the good ol' days of beta.Well, I'm going to make up for that now. This is my "Battle Tested" circle. It includes a lot of familiar faces and maybe some people you haven't seen before. This is quite the rogues gallery of different people. You have been warned. ;)(As is customary, I added myself... because... yeah. lol)2013-05-17 16:07:3110611218
Lee Smallwood22,777Outstanding Contribution to G+ CircleActions [sometimes] speak louder than words - spoken or otherwise...Which is why I want to share this circle in particular. It contains people that go beyond the norm and their contributions to G+ are second to none. There maybe some familiar faces contained within it and some not so well known... However, together they create an entertaining and thought provoking content stream that I can't do without on a daily basis.Seriously consider adding them to your circles :) #circleshare  2013-05-10 10:51:3613625219
Stephanie Calahan513FABULOUS WOMEN ON G+ Part 1 of 4My goal was to crowd-source a list of women on Google+.  I had originally expected maybe 50 names.  Much to my surprise and , I received over 400+ comments filled with love and positive energy to help curate this list of well over 1310 beautiful people. I would say this was a success and now I'm sharing with everyone (this is shared public too).If you're getting a notification about this it's because you've been identified as a Fabulous Woman on G+ that is Actively posting and Engaging here.  See the bottom of this message for the original post where names were collected.I thought you would want to know that you have been identified as someone the G+ community should connect with!  I don't send out notifications unless there is 100% warranted.#Google+ will only allow me to share 500 at a time, so the list has been broken down in to 4 circles.  I would have shared one massive circle if I was allowed. What You Can Do Now* Add these circles to your own circles by pressing the "View shared circle" button below. You Might Have Noticed I Stopped Painting

So, +Philip Setnik recently asked me about painting. Why I'm not, if I planned to go back, that kind of thing.

I've been mulling it over since then, since he said I could get as serious as I felt like, and I wanted to do justice to the question.

(I'm methodical, said my old therapist, not slow. There is a difference, supposedly.)

So, here I am, trying to condense down why I'm not painting, because it's complicated once you get past the end result that most people care about - the fact that there are no new paintings.

It's not easy to do.

I could say that it was mostly due to the obvious reason: that I couldn't pay my bills with painting full time, and if I had to work, I didn't have much energy to paint the way I had been. The process of making the paints In... more »

Payment plans are working now.

Aurora Borealis Cuff: #8 – ‘Squiggle’

We cut our heaviest gauge copper sheet in house to an inch and a half wide and six inches long. We then carefully heat all edges until the metal runs molten, bringing out luscious, organic forms. Tumbled and buffed to clean up any sharp edges, and then flame painting the center to bring out the gorgeous colors. The molten edges are then hand buffed three more times before the entire cuff is sealed in skin safe metal lacquer to protect the flame painting.

First color layers fused.

It's just a different kind of painting. This time, I get to use brushes AND my torch.

I finally found my transparent orange, too. I couldn't find it when I was working in oils or encaustics (even when I was making all my own paints) but I've found it. It was in glass all along.

Did You Know: Enamels are actually glass that has (typically) been ground into a fine powder. It is then applied to a surface, and re-melted, or fused, often many layers in succession, creating the final piece.

And now you know... and knowing is half the battle!

I have some sanding down to do on this piece before I fuse the next layer.

Today is a Minecraft-Cooking-Chain-Making kind of day.

May load up Adobe Illustrator and see about refreshing what I knew about that program, for some projects coming up. Vector drawing was something I only just got into, back in the day.

Set Three of Hammered Bangles in Copper
$45.00

Elegant, simple, classic, gorgeous: The Hammered Bangle! Lightweight enough to two (or more, we won’t judge), and made even more fun to wear because of the lovely sound when they clink up against each other on your wrist. Go ahead, wave to that friend across the street – you’ll see what we mean when they catch the light and make that lovely chiming sound unique to copper.

New things can be some of the best things, even if the people who knew you for the old things have issues with that. I still get asked - almost a year later! - why I stopped painting, when I'm going back, I need to go back, etc.

Ya gotta do what's best for you. I'm glad you're doing it and I'm really looking forward to seeing you branch out, in whatever area you head to. :D

We know now, those of us that are intelligent enough and respectful enough to realize it, that sex at birth doesn't permanently determine much of anything about who we are, except who gives birth, and who knows how much longer that will remain the case.

The method for making some of the most beautiful chains in the world is centuries upon centuries old. Yet, while you can find them in museums and fine art collections around the world, you can’t find them in department stores. Or even in most jewelry stores. You’d think something that beautiful would be mass-produced already, right? You know why you can’t find them commercially made, right? http://buff.ly/1vGoRvw

A while ago, I shared with you all that I was interested in going to a Boot Camp to learn to code.

That opportunity has arisen, with my acceptance into the Winter cohort at Hackbright Academy, in San Francisco. Hackbright is an awesome camp for me to go to both because it's a Python camp (meaning I'm not starting from complete zero), and it's an all women camp.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that to hold my seat while I get an aid determination, the deposit is $3000, which is money I don't have. I'm examining all of my options to make the deposit (and go to camp) because this is my dream and this is also my opportunity to do some heavy lifting for the girls and women behind me.

A few friends have suggested that if I had a crowdfunding page up for it, they'd consider it. I've put this page together. Since I know a number of people who aren't interested in Go Fund Me (I wouldn't be using them if my turnaround weren't so fast, myself) and I'll probably get asked, I do also have a paypal link if you want to help out with this: aberrantvirtue@gmail.com.

I know this might seem like a big ask after the summer I've had, so please know that if you don't want to contribute, or don't have the money to contribute, I still love and value you exactly the same. I'm only putting this up so that there's a convenient way for those who want to help.

Thank you all for your encouragement, love, and support in getting me to the place where this is what I have to ask for. I have come so far in this time, and I look forward to going even farther.

Love.

So let us be loving, hopeful, and optimistic. And we will change the world. - Jack Layton" The tea tag says: "'The first and great commandment is: don't let them scare you.' - Elmer Davis")___<3

Good morning, Gplussers! In honor of the upcoming 'black friday' and the official start of the insanity that is holiday shopping, I thought I would mention that you can get autographed copies of any of my books, directly from me.

I write primarily science fiction and fantasy novels. All are suitable for teen and adult readers. They are all stand alones; the sequel to THE BETWEEN (TIME AND TITHE, will be published in January. I'm currently drafting the next book in the DERELICT universe for a planned Summer 2015 release).

DERELICT
When Rosalen Maldonado tinkers with the derelict space ship, she's just hoping to prove she deserves a scholarship to University. She certainly doesn't count on waking the ship's damaged AI or having three stowaways along for the ride. They all have their private reasons for hiding aboard and lives they are seeking to escape, but if the accidental crew can't work together and learn to trust each other, they'll die together, victims of a computer that doesn't realize the war ended decades before any of them were even born.

FUTURE TENSE
In the ten years since his parents died in a fire he predicted but couldn't prevent, 17 year-old Matt Garrison is trying to stay out of trouble, biding his time until he graduates and ages out of foster care. His plans for keeping to himself fail when he interrupts a gang attack on a girl he recognizes from school. Despite his best attempts to push her away, he can't ignore the connection they've formed. That's when glimpses of her dangerous future start to invade the present - a future Matt fears is his fault. He's willing to do whatever it takes to avoid their shared, violent fate. But where can a kid in foster care go to escape from himself?

THE BETWEEN
Lydia Hawthorne is less than grateful when Oberon has her snatched from the mortal world and she finds out she's actually Fae. And not just any Fae, but a trueborn with enough inherent magic to tip the balance between Oberon and Titania's warring Bright and Shadow courts. But that's their game and she doesn't want to play by their rules. Together with Clive Barrow, a bright court Fae with embarrassing ties to the mortal world, Lydia fights to regain her old life, fueling her Fae magic with the very human power of love and loss, challenging the essential nature of Faerie itself.

Feel free to message or email me (lisa@ljcohen.net) if you'd like to order autographed copies of the trade paperback editions. In addition, links to all the books and purchase venues can be found on  my website: http://www.ljcohen.net

I would be very grateful if you would share this post.___:D

dawg encounters

lately we've talked about text adventures so this may interest you. today i worked on a small combat module for a text adventure RPG twine game i'm building. you play a dog in the post apocalyptic wasteland and encounter a smattering of semi-random NPCs.

there's a work in progress demo version live at http://oxru.in/dawg/

i spent many hours this past week inventing a system that would allow for a variety of encounters. first i created a small loop of interactions and then gradually expanded them to include more options. this is just one piece of something larger. i'm going to stop thinking about these encounters for a little while and instead focus on a more sparse framework for exploring diverse environments.

if you play i'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

+Abigail Markov is probably on her way to slurp wine in Orlando at Jingle Eve already but in her absence, you can read all about how she makes the decisions about which skills to expand into, which lines of products to develop, and the ways she trims back the infinite list of things she could be doing.___Probably no wine for me (I'd fall asleep, I think, just caffeine and adrenaline keeping me going now), but this is the best way I can describe my decision making process.

Got four, missed on two. Four out of six isn't as bad as it could be. (I'm getting a higher majority than the US Senate's votes for things are at least!)

Making end caps is my least favorite part of this whole chain process. Likely because it involves solder.

Time to go put days of math and measuring to the test.

This 5.8" long bit of chain should draw out to approximately 6.3", and after the handmade clasp, the full chain should measure 7.5"

If I am right, I'll have reverse engineered from observations and finished pieces a plug-and-play equation for this style of chain. An equation which will save me days of time, give me the exact number of links needed of any length of chain, and reduce wasted silver.

Algebra: It's your friend.

PS: I tell my kids that math is just telling stories in another language. Think about it. It is.

Tools of the trade. ;)

Left to right:

Chain in various stages of completion, including a coil of fine silver wire I'll be cutting into jump rings shortly.

My itty-bitty link box.

Digital calipers.

0.81 mm fine silver wire.

Very sharp and pointy scribe.

My well-loved chain nose pliers; red handles.

Green handles are mandrel pliers. I'm sure they have a real name, but that's what I use them for, so that's what I call them. ;)

Blue handles are my super flush cutters. (Steve calls them super flesh cutters. Steve is special. This is part of why I love him.)

The process of making the paints I needed and then prepping the materials and then actually painting was a full time job, as far as time needed.

I could say that the time to promote the work even just online was prohibitive. I was putting in 60-80 hour weeks between painting, marketing, and networking.

I could also say that I burnt out on networking, and the arts scene I found while I tried to do that. I had made a few good friends, but for the most part, it was much more tiring than encouraging.

I could say that it was because I felt like I was simply a free content creator for people on social networks. That I was simply creating pretty things for people to look at. And while that's a nice feeling when it's a hobby, it's not viable when you're trying to make it your career. As nice as the plusses, likes, and comments were, they didn't pay the bills.

I could point out that I was skipping meals for days at a time to be able to afford painting - I was quite literally a starving artist - and I hit a point where I either had to find another means of supporting myself, or my kids would start to eat less. I wasn't about to do that to my kids. I am, before I am a painter, their mother.

I could say that I stopped because I didn't have the work space to actually work - a hot, cramped garage that you're really not supposed to be working in, or a rental that will fine you hundreds for carpet stains, are not good places to be working with hot, colored wax in. (Or torches, for that matter.)

I could say that I stopped because I had lost my muse, or because I was angry with how far away I had drifted from loving the work I was doing. That I was angry and resentful that I was working for as many hours as I was in difficult situations, to be rejected over and over and over by gate keepers I had little to no respect for, art politicians, or that I was tired of hoping to find a passionate art community locally only to find a repeat of high school with prettier pictures.

I could say I stopped because I was going through bouts of depression, because my personal life was quite busy (in some not great ways, and some great ones), or because I was irked with the same stupid "My kid could paint that" garden variety comments.

But really, in the end, while all those factors contributed, I stopped painting because I stopped wanting to communicate what I had been through my work. The work to say what I was trying to say fell on deaf ears or I ended up being outright mocked for seeing my work the way I did.

I stopped painting because I stopped talking. I gave up trying to say what I had been trying to say, stopped trying to show what I had been trying to show. I decided that if I couldn't get it across in words or paint, it wasn't worth doing.

I don't need the paintings to understand what I was trying to share. I know it. I'm not going to shove it down anyone's throat (no, it's not religion), and I'm not going to let it be brushed off as just pretty pictures.

I'm not angry that it wasn't understood. It's not my loss. I'll still make little beautiful things - it's just who I am - and there will be hints of what I was trying to say in those pieces, just as there were in my paintings.

And no, I can't quite explain in just words. Otherwise, why would I have painted?

So, that's pretty much why I stopped painting. <3

Hope that answers, Philip. <3___

Well, the ring didn't come out as hoped or planned or even well enough to release into the shop, so it's being added to my collection.

I've learned a lot (which I tend to do by tackling work much harder than I have the skill sets for) and so the next time I try a ring like this, it'll go much more smoothly.

For now, I think I shall stick with flatter things for a while. Or, at least until I find a way to afford that $560 kiln, which makes firing round things MUCH easier, and much less risky.

(Craigslist is more expensive than buying new. I look. Daily. It's a weird world out there, isn't it?)

I do like enamel quite a bit though, and damn, it's good to have a brush back in my hands after almost a year of not painting at all!

My phone is dead, so no photos of the ring; I'll try tomorrow.

Oh! Has everyone gotten their Holiday chain orders in? They take me about a month to finish, so if you wanted yours in time for the Holidays, you'll need to get your order in ASAP!

Oh, and check out the neat Reserve Your Piece feature that we just got working! You can now reserve a piece with a down payment, and pay the rest any time within 30 days!___

Starting on colors.

Short work night so far. Tech malfunctioning took up most of the day.

May sneak in some chain work later, hands permitting.

I'm gonna have to make more links soon.

I've linked together about 9 inches of chain since yesterday. My finger pads hurt too much today to do much more today.

On to enamel for a bit.

These are serious(ly awesome) hair sticks, each one measuring at about the size of half a pencil cut in half. I’ve used half round wire so they lay flat against your head, after having too many pairs of round hair sticks give me headaches. Your hair sticks are handcrafted from solid copper half-round wire, hammered and sanded to a smooth, rounded point - no catching on your hair – and hammered and wrapped in warm, glowing ~1.3mm (16 gauge) copper, before being sealed to protect the finish. http://buff.ly/1EPg4Ih

Earlier today... Working lunch.

Steve took off for a bike ride shortly after this shot, and it sounded like such a good idea two the kids and I went on our own ride too.

Steve runs www.FloridaBiking.net in his spare time, so you can imagine what the garage looks like: half workshop, half bikes and tools!

Another hour of audio book listened to.

Picked up Hand to Mouth a while back, after +Shanna Mann mentioned it. It's interesting, provided you've not lived it.

PS: Steve says he likes this new enamel stuff. What do you think? It's got a steeper learning curve, but I like the early results so far!

Most reasonable people would choose a flat surface for their first try at cloisonne. Maybe a slightly domed circle pendant.

But noooooooo, I can't ever just do it the easy way. Noooo, I get it in my head to try it on a ring. As bands that go around the entire ring.

Gaaah. I have to see if this idea works though!
