Lotus Carroll1,775,081This is the Event for our April Self Portrait Challenge: "Wet." In celebration of "April Showers," but very flexible conceptually, our "Wet" theme allows you to interpret however you like. Get creative - we're looking forward to seeing what you all come up with! Here is where you enter your ONE "Wet" Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST April 30th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) *Please read all rules (scroll down).* _Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified._ *Tips & Inspiration* There are so many possibilities for this theme - will you be underwater, in the rain, or soaking in the tub? Maybe riding some ocean waves or drowning in a lake? The possibilities are endless! Self Portraiture a la H2O Gallery on Flickr: http://goo.gl/NYwGKM Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. We have a category for discussion and questions and are happy to help with anything.  Thanks to @111397628815301589258, one of our talented Moderators, for the header image on this Event! *Sponsor* This month's sponsor is @101789561086090624750! This is what I see when I paint, when I'm looking at my paintings. This is roughly 3" high, and 12" wide.

You have to get pretty close to pieces to see these details, which makes showing the work a challenge. Most people tend to glance and walk. When someone stops and looks closely, those people make my heart sing.

Metaphor for life. Most people will pass you by; the few that stop to really look are the ones you've been looking for.

Complete with lots of mock up images for each size.

One more check on the checklist for this week. (My goal for getting prints on the website is one print listing a week in February. I'll probably be doing this until 2018, at that rate, but it's a good start!)

Steve says, after the safety chain was attached and I cleaned everything up again: "You know I'm never taking it off now. It just scares me to lose it, because it's so light that I forget I'm wearing it, until I look down and notice it's not there anymore, and I just didn't want to lose it."

Which makes my heart and face smile. Not just because he loves it, but also because that is actually a very heavy chain for its size. It's just so comfortable that he didn't notice it. #win

Steve's Thai weave chain bracelet has a safety chain now. My widest finished chain and my smallest chain all in one piece.

The small chain is 2mm in diameter.

One of these days I'll offer this chain weave in the shop. One day. Not today. (7 inches, finished, takes at least 50 hours of hands-on work. I love the work, looking for the niche market.)

The idea to frame and encase encaustic paintings in bar resin started off as a way save paintings that were taking damage and never going to fully dry, and a way to keep waxy oil paint from getting all over everything else. (By everything else, I mean all over Steve’s stuff that is in proximity to my stuff, which ALL has paint on it.) Steve and I had been tossing the idea back and forth for over a year – how to build a liquid-tight frame, added weight, what tools we’d need. Unfortunately for our project-loving selves, for that first year, we didn’t have the means to get the tools and supplies the project needed. (Not limited to a band saw, a miter saw, a routing table, wood, caulk, nails, and no small amount of two part epoxy resin.)

So the resin-meets-painting idea sat there on the back burner. For a year.

Fast forward to November 2015.

And this wrap design got approved -which means they can be ordered now. (Link below is where you order. Anyone can order - it's paid for through PayPal. Easy peasy.)

Also have two other wrap designs approved and listed.

Two more designs in the Jamberry queue: the solid red from yesterday, and a new design from today.

Spent most of the day cleaning up the website, getting bits organized. Not perfect, but progress. Looking and navigating better. It's almost ready for more than just wraps and original paintings now.

GAH.

Go get them before they are gone when the catalog transitions to the new one one on Feb 5/6 so I can posh vicariously through you, okay? Lots of stuff is leaving, I don't have a clue what it all is, so I'll be flailing with all of you guys too.

We're on to drying things, now that canning is done.

Sage and rosemary up first. Potatoes next. (That one is a new adventure for Steve and I, potatoes.) About a quarter of the Sage and rosemary that we picked up at the farmers market. (Less than $8/lb each. Will last us months.)

#happilyboring

PS: Very old dehydrator in top corner.

I'm really loving these wraps.

Fighting with Satan and metal clay today, so my Lisa Frankesque nails are a happy check point for me.

Here's to hoping this next trick to working with it does the trick. We might need an exorcist for me, I'd not. MY head may start spinning soon - from frustration! ;)

It's a new system, so this is a pretty normal experience, for what it's worth. Learning and growing pains are a big part of pushing your own limits - physical, emotional, mental, or creative!

If you'd like a link to the wraps above, holler. Otherwise, I'm going to be fighting with Satan for the rest of the day!

What do ya think? Which ones would you wear?

Fighting the black dog of depression back with some long overdue self-care. Figured Cosmic wraps from Jamberry should brighten my spirits a bit, and keep my nails from breaking off every time I get more than 2mm of length. (I have paper thin nails on a good day, and the wraps protect them from breakage without damaging them.)

It seems silly to some people that having your nails pretty would help fight off depression, yet it works for me and for some of my friends, too. None of us were really nail people before wraps, either.

Self care is important, in whatever form works best for you.

I have a massive pot of pinto beans on my stove right now. Most of the beans are done, but I want the spices to mellow and mesh a bit more before I can them, which means I'm doing a lot of checking, stirring, and 'taste testing.' (I'm also waiting for new mason jar lids to get in, so that contributes.)

You know what happens when I spend a lot of time doing fairly mindless work, right? I start thinking, and that leads to pondering metaphors and how one thing is like another, and the next thing you know, I'm giggling about... well, life lessons learned from beans. Usually I just keep these oddball musings to myself, but... hey, maybe you could use a giggle today too.

Video is a wee bit intimidating for me, so of course, I'm tackling learning how to work with it. I'm starting with easy things - Posh and Jamberry reviews, things not too personal or arty. Mostly since arty things get me some REALLY weird responses when I talk/write about them and that's kinda the last thing I want when dealing with a new medium. I want to learn the medium first, and then break out into glorious dorky weirdness.

And yeah, since I make (am) a spectacular dork, I went with Give A Dork A Camera for my channel nickname. Might as well embrace it instead of fight it!

Heh.

water for flint

I'm greatly distressed by the problems with the drinking water in Flint, Michigan. I want to do something about it. So I'm shopping around for bottled water that can be paid for and delivered where it's needed most. So far this is the best I've come up with: pallets of 288 1 gallon bottles.

I thought about what I'd want to use at home if the water in my tap was toxic or shut off and the 1 gallon size seemed more appropriate than 16oz bottles. There's also other solutions like filtration, but my first gut reaction is to ship in bottles from outside.

My current plan is to talk with the folks on the ground in Flint and make sure this would really help, then lock down a supplier and just send a shipment.

My current plan is to talk with the folks on the ground in Flint and make sure this would really help, then lock down a supplier and just send a shipment.

I'm considering starting some way to fundraise so that shipment so it could be bigger than the just one pallet I can afford. Like if some of us pitched in maybe it wouldn't be just 288 gallons. I'd like to send a 1000 gallon shipment at least.

In the grand scheme, the amount of money it would cost isn't very much. My estimates indicate that 1000 gallons shipped is less than a new MacBook. Just think about that for a second.

Water is too precious to life to not have a ready supply, even if it's just a little. I'd like to make sure some people can have a drink without worrying. Or make some coffee. Or pour it on your head. Doesn't matter. I've been lucky to always live in places with fantastic drinking water. I can't imagine the awful feeling of not being able to trust what's coming out of the tap.

There's info on the city homepage with the food bank that can receive large volumes of bottled water: https://www.cityofflint.com/state-of-emergency/how-can-i-help/

Without even thinking about it, I responded back, “Nah, I haven’t been working hard.”

He gave me a brief twisted-face-rolled-eyes look.

“Oh, that’s right, you’ve not done any work at ALL.”"

It's not a bad first try. Translating the design from image file to cut file took hours.

Lots of little broken bits while cutting, so scrapped this one, rehydrating the clay, and will try again another time, maybe.

Bit under an inch and a half in diameter.

Meh. Whatever.

The one thing I wanted finished before Saturday is done: The brass name plate for the back of the painting 'Doubt''s panel. (It's heading to a collector shortly after I get it back from the gallery this weekend.)

Will hand this name plate off to Steve for permanent attachment sometime next week. Since he made the panels, it's only fitting for him to attach this.

Took a couple of tries, but got it right that second time.

Fourteen Jamberry Custom Nail art designs all set up for easy purchasing on my art website/domain. No more juggling spreadsheets and messages. Finally! Now that they are easy to see and order, I can get back to making more of them with my art and designs.

This project has been something I've had waiting to be done for MONTHS. Rawr. Success!

I'll throw the link to them all in the comments. I'll be submitting the print order for any orders that come in through the site at the end of the week + the orders already in. (The site takes PayPal too, woot!)

Food now though. And time with Steve. It's time to stop working for a bit.

When someone is being harassed and the harasser is claiming to be part of your organization while harassing, you don't fucking say, "oh, it was not done in our IRC channel so fuck off".

You also don't try to violate your own terms to steal the handle that someone has been using for years.

All six of these will be for sale and shipping once they come back from the gallery - $300 each, for a 12x12in encaustic original painting on one of Steve Muller's handcrafted 1.5" deep wood panels, already wired to hang. I've not heard of them selling yet from Jon, but I'm betting we can get a red dot stuck on them if one of you grabs them before the show closes.

Names and explanations: You Are Here series, abigailmarkov.com/gallery/painting/

//Doubt is currently spoken for.

Patreon supporters have first dibs, and supporters over the $25 mark get their usual half off the above gallery price.

Shipping is $25, FedEx, in the US. (The are heavy for their size.) International shipping - send me your address and I'll get you a rough quote.

This would normally be Patreon Only; I'm talking about the why's of my artwork, which can attract snark and smart assery. (Neither appreciated when we're getting all vulnerable-like.) So, yes, this one has a "Like For More" bit.

People tend to not mock or troll what they have to do something to earn access to. (Curiously enough.)
