After years of being in pieces in my garage, it runs. It finally runs.

I found this thing in the trash 5-6 years ago with the engine locked up. The piston was so fried that I had to saw the connecting rod in two to get the engine apart (it was basically forged/welded together). I replaced the connecting rod and rebuilt crank, then got a new cylinder and piston and rebuilt the head/cam/valves. Next I redid the bottom end, went through everything to check specs, cleaned it, and replaced all seals/gaskets/bolts. Then I rebuilt the clutch and the generator and replaced the points, timed it, and soldered a new condenser on to the coil. Finally I cleaned and kitted the carb (and used electrolysis to clean the inside of the tank). First kick it started. It runs rough with a small backfire at low RPM (sounds too lean on pilot circuit), but it runs. Once it's dialed in I plan to take it BACK... more »

I'm not really a big motorcycle rider, but I like fixing up old stuff and messing with engines, so this has been a fun project.  ___

Dear internets, how are you guys doing debugging on Android 4.x with ART?

I know this was a known issue, and it's fixed in AOSP, but what about Nexus 5 devices and such that are running ART now and not running L? Are those just hosed?

(I need to run ART, we've had several bugs that only occurred on ART and were affecting real users -- and I don't really want to use an early release build, because I want to mimic what users are actually using -- they have 4.4 and click on ART in settings. I guess I'll just setup two different devices, one for debugging with Dalvik and 4.4, and one with ART for other tests with 4.4.)

Thoughts on the Nexus 6.
http://www.google.com/intl/all/nexus/

I'm sure excited about Lollipop and Material Design, and I'm impressed with the N6 specs (holy screen density Batman), but I'm troubled by the price.

I don't mean to be one of those price whiners, but I guess I've come to expect some heavy subsidies on a Nexus device. I think there are probably several factors going on here. First, I imagine Google didn't want to cannibalize all the other Android device manufacturers by making a device that is superior to everything else out there AND making it a lot cheaper. And, second, I bet this thing just cost a lot more to make.

That said though, at $650USD (if early reports are accurate), your'e talking almost twice what an N5 costs, or more relevantly twice what a OnePlus One costs. Couple that with the fact that Lollipop will bema... more »

That said though, at $650USD (if early reports are accurate), your'e talking almost twice what an N5 costs, or more relevantly twice what a OnePlus One costs. Couple that with the fact that Lollipop will be made available on many different devices (thankfully, props to Google for that one), and we're really just talking about the price for the hardware.

Is an N6 worth TWO OnePlus Ones? I'm gonna have to say nope, it's not. Unfortunately I think that will hamper sales of the N6 and it might look like a flop in a misguided sales only context. I don't think Google cares. They want a flagship device that doesn't cannibalize other stuff, and sales of it doesn't really matter. However, not subsidizing the heck out of it sets a different tone with Nexus fans, and will make people like me whine about it ;).

(As for the subsidizing, to be honest, I expect it with a Nexus device. I mean I'm basically carrying our your ad delivery platform and looking at it for hours every day, in which case you can afford to spot me a couple hundred bucks up front. The problem with that, of course, is that other carriers and manufacturers can't compete with that, so the cannibalization thing comes back into play.)___

Great service alert! +CondoInternet in Seattle is terrific!

I live on two coasts. Part of each month I'm in Seattle, the other part in Atlanta. I have two different ISPs. Comcast in Atlanta, CondoInternet.net in Seattle. One of them is fantastic! And, one of them pisses me off at every turn and disgusts me so much I'm thinking about getting commercial DSL just to avoid them. Guess which is which!

CondoInternet: 100MBPs for $60 a month and it's not shared, speeds are symmetrical and always spot on, works great. Customer service is phenomenal. In fact, I called to ask if they can suspend and prorate my account while I am out of town and they said "no problem," I expected a fight, they handled it in about 20 seconds with a smile. Comcast: $66.95 a month for 20MBPs shared and almost never hits the advertised speed. Also has a MOTHER FUCKING CAP of 250GB/mth which streaming video easily exceeds, so they are nice enough to CHARGE ME ANOTHER $10 per 50GB each month. Did I say fuck already?  Also their customer service is terrible. I am looking for any way to escape dealing with this company on all levels. They keep pestering me to use their TV service (yeah, they market stuff to me all the time, hooray!) and I tell them hells no. You're already being an asshole to me at every turn, why would I sign myself up for more of your nonsense? HORRIBLE PRODUCT and ATROCIOUS SERVICE.___

Hey +Starz, I just cancelled my subscription to your channel because your website and mobile app are so bad. It's 2014 guys, I expect to be able to watch online (which always fails with diff errors on starzplay, multiple OSes) and I expect your app to support Chromecast and not crash every other launch.

Really +Google Play Team, an app I first published in 2008 or so (which was last updated in 2011) warrants a super-vague takedown notice like this?

I can't tell from this notice, but presumably it's the name "bookworm" that's at issue? The code is all open source and properly attributed. If you're going to send an "impending removal" notice, at least tell people SPECIFICALLY what the issue is, for fucks sake.

You know what, you want to be jerks about it, take it down and have one less app in your app store, fine with me. (In fact I tried to "unpublish" it a while ago but your lame Play Store console throws an error because it doesn't have a promo graphic that has become required LONG AFTER this was first published, and therefore fails the form validation. Yes, even when trying to UNPUBLISH.)___

New Features in Picasso

Here's a quick overview of the features I've recently landed in Picasso: request handlers, request management, and request priorities. These new APIs will probably be available in the 2.4 release.

Thanks +Jake Wharton and +Dimitris Koutsogiorgas for the code/API reviews!

This happens way too often; today I was researching whether or not persistent HTTP connections on Android are working for multiple small HTTPS connections. The first, and most informative, result I got from a quick search was +Matthias Käppler 's article about this on his blog: http://mttkay.github.io/blog/2013/03/02/herding-http-requests-or-why-your-keep-alive-connection-may-be-dead/

It seems like just about every tricky thing on Android I start researching just ends up at MK's blog, but I'm usually about 2 years behind him ;).

In my case I'm not using a queuing library or any special settings, yet. And, I am looking at data using a proxy server that captures requests at a high level but I'm not yet using tcpdump or wireshark or such (next steps, I guess). I'm hoping the framework is handling that (I'm using OkHttp, but haven't dug in). ___

Hey, it runs.

This is my current ride while in GA. My modern car is in Seattle. This thing is ugly, but it has a 289 4v (meaning 4bbl carb, yes 289 is a v8 engine) that can haul when it's tuned correctly. Right now I'm having some problems with stalling under heavy accel/load, but it works fine if you just take it easy. And, I've been through all sorts of stuff to try to figure it out: new carb and intake which it needed anyway, plugs/cap/rotor, timing, vacuum tests, compression tests, and so on. New distributor arrives today, maybe that will help (and it's needed anyway too, so not a huge deal if it doesn't solve it, going electronic over the points).

Dude, it's not a "miracle" that you're alive, it's science. And it's certainly not "powerful testimony to god’s sustaining grace in time of need" that you lived and many others didn't. You had access to care and to drugs that others didn't have.

Let's just set this shit straight right now. A "miracle" would be God coming down, saying hello and zapping you cured. It's not a miracle if you take an experimental drug that needed years of research and you are treated in a state of the art hospital (which also took science centuries to create and improve) that can properly monitor you and administer said drug.

I mean if THAT is your miracle bar, it's pretty damn low. Talk about counting the hits and forgetting the misses.

A KEY competitive advantage for Netflix is a culture of trust and responsibility. Everyone trusts everyone else's judgement and it takes the friction out of getting things done.

Paraphrasing Adrian Cockroft in this talk: Adrian Cockcroft Keynote 1

I parroted a tweet about this the other day, but I think it's super important, so I'm harping on it again.

To me, this is how large companies (I won't say "enterprise," won't do it) get startup level productivity and cost. Trust, and low/no process. Sure, it's hard to get there, but if you make the effort, as Mr. Cockroft notes, it's a "key competitive advantage."

You just can't do things well and efficiently without trust, period. The more "process" you ram down people's throats the worse it gets too. You can't replace trust with process. Having... more »

You just can't do things well and efficiently without trust, period. The more "process" you ram down people's throats the worse it gets too. You can't replace trust with process. Having different groups for various functions and hand-offs and such is the surest way I know to create defensiveness between those groups and, frankly, shitty products/results. In an environment with hand-offs your goal becomes to defend your part of the hand-off, not the overall goal/product/result, and that's bad. That leads to a lot of overhead and animosity between groups and an attitude of "it's not my problem" which rots an organization.

I've worked at startups and large companies. I've done this stuff for several decades. I'm an old greybeard and I've seen some shit, as they say. The size of the company isn't the important factor, the insight of the leadership into trust and process is. I've seen productive environments at big companies (rarer, but does happen). If you have leaders who have come from super productive environments in very challenging technical circles they often get it. If you have leaders that came from business school (sorry, but true), or from some digital agency, they probably don't get it. ___

1972 Honda XL 250!

I bought this bike yesterday, even though I don't need another project. I couldn't pass it up for the proximity and the price, and because it's one hell of a classic. 1972 was the first year of the Honda XL. This thing will sit in my garage for a while until I finish some other projects, but that's OK, it can wait a little longer.

(Disclaimer: I am partial to the old XLs. I haven't owned one in 25+ years, but when I was 14-15-16 [somewhere in there] my dad got me a used XL 185. I think it was an 80-81 model, and this was in about 84-85. It wasn't as cool as the newer bikes, but I rode that thing everywhere, and beat it to hell, and it kept going. It was a lot of fun. Old Hondas are just cool.)

I didn't see this talk, and don't know anything about Adrian Cockroft (though I now feel like I should), but this one slide is some of the best advice you'll ever see about software engineering:

And here is my mostly plagiarized personal twist:
 - Culture of freedom and responsibility, teams can make decisions
 - Low process, process is NOT the important part
 - No hand offs between teams, hand offs breed defensiveness
 - Speed wins in the marketplace (not speed of/to dev, speed of prod)
 - Use simple patterns
 - Automate all the things
 - Self service cloud FTW

(This means "agency" style models, with hand offs all over the place and a ton of process really don't work. See the above bullets.)
