Hey, it runs.

This is my current ride while in GA. My modern car is in Seattle. This thing is ugly, but it has a 289 4v (meaning 4bbl carb, yes 289 is a v8 engine) that can haul when it's tuned correctly. Right now I'm having some problems with stalling under heavy accel/load, but it works fine if you just take it easy. And, I've been through all sorts of stuff to try to figure it out: new carb and intake which it needed anyway, plugs/cap/rotor, timing, vacuum tests, compression tests, and so on. New distributor arrives today, maybe that will help (and it's needed anyway too, so not a huge deal if it doesn't solve it, going electronic over the points).

I didn't see this talk, and don't know anything about Adrian Cockroft (though I now feel like I should), but this one slide is some of the best advice you'll ever see about software engineering:

And here is my mostly plagiarized personal twist:
 - Culture of freedom and responsibility, teams can make decisions
 - Low process, process is NOT the important part
 - No hand offs between teams, hand offs breed defensiveness
 - Speed wins in the marketplace (not speed of/to dev, speed of prod)
 - Use simple patterns
 - Automate all the things
 - Self service cloud FTW

(This means "agency" style models, with hand offs all over the place and a ton of process really don't work. See the above bullets.)

Oh my.

I wonder how much work it was to detect the setting and show a modal here vs just fixing it and saving state properly ;). I know, they probably use some lame framework (feels very webbish) and that complicates it. Still horrible.

Dude, it's not a "miracle" that you're alive, it's science. And it's certainly not "powerful testimony to god’s sustaining grace in time of need" that you lived and many others didn't. You had access to care and to drugs that others didn't have.

Let's just set this shit straight right now. A "miracle" would be God coming down, saying hello and zapping you cured. It's not a miracle if you take an experimental drug that needed years of research and you are treated in a state of the art hospital (which also took science centuries to create and improve) that can properly monitor you and administer said drug.

I mean if THAT is your miracle bar, it's pretty damn low. Talk about counting the hits and forgetting the misses.

A KEY competitive advantage for Netflix is a culture of trust and responsibility. Everyone trusts everyone else's judgement and it takes the friction out of getting things done.

Paraphrasing Adrian Cockroft in this talk: Adrian Cockcroft Keynote 1

I parroted a tweet about this the other day, but I think it's super important, so I'm harping on it again.

To me, this is how large companies (I won't say "enterprise," won't do it) get startup level productivity and cost. Trust, and low/no process. Sure, it's hard to get there, but if you make the effort, as Mr. Cockroft notes, it's a "key competitive advantage."

You just can't do things well and efficiently without trust, period. The more "process" you ram down people's throats the worse it gets too. You can't replace trust with process. Having... more »

A KEY competitive advantage for Netflix is a culture of trust and responsibility. Everyone trusts everyone else's judgement and it takes the friction out of getting things done.

Having different groups for various functions and hand-offs and such is the surest way I know to create defensiveness between those groups and, frankly, shitty products/results. In an environment with hand-offs your goal becomes to defend your part of the hand-off, not the overall goal/product/result, and that's bad. That leads to a lot of overhead and animosity between groups and an attitude of "it's not my problem" which rots an organization.

I've worked at startups and large companies. I've done this stuff for several decades. I'm an old greybeard and I've seen some shit, as they say. The size of the company isn't the important factor, the insight of the leadership into trust and process is. I've seen productive environments at big companies (rarer, but does happen). If you have leaders who have come from super productive environments in very challenging technical circles they often get it. If you have leaders that came from business school (sorry, but true), or from some digital agency, they probably don't get it. ___

1972 Honda XL 250!

I bought this bike yesterday, even though I don't need another project. I couldn't pass it up for the proximity and the price, and because it's one hell of a classic. 1972 was the first year of the Honda XL. This thing will sit in my garage for a while until I finish some other projects, but that's OK, it can wait a little longer.

(Disclaimer: I am partial to the old XLs. I haven't owned one in 25+ years, but when I was 14-15-16 [somewhere in there] my dad got me a used XL 185. I think it was an 80-81 model, and this was in about 84-85. It wasn't as cool as the newer bikes, but I rode that thing everywhere, and beat it to hell, and it kept going. It was a lot of fun. Old Hondas are just cool.)

Hey everybody, you don't really want to add android:largeHeap=true, instead go figure out what's taking up the memory and try to address that.

Good news if you ride a bike in downtown Seattle: http://crosscut.com/2014/07/23/transportation/121110/2nd-avenue-bike-lane-protection-cars-drivers/

That is actually the street I take to work when I ride my bike (which is only occasionally, I also walk since it's just a few miles).

Tangent: I do this crazy thing while I'm riding my bike in Seattle, I stop at stop signs and lights, and wait in traffic at lights! This seems to cause confusion with some drivers, and I think it's because they don' t expect that at all. Many of the bikers in downtown Seattle are dicks. Don't get me wrong, I love the biking thing, fun, healthy, better for the environment, win all around -- but just because you're on a bike doesn't mean you get to be a dick. Get over yourself. Weaving in and out of traffic and running lights and parking in crosswalks and darting to the sidewalk if the light turns and so on are NOT acceptable behaviors. A bike is still subject to the traffic laws where I come from (I don't know if that's true in Seattle, based on the way people drive bikes it doesn't appear to be, but it should be even if not). ___

TLDR; Comcast sucks. Help me Google Fiber, you're my only hope.

Oh for fuck's sake. I just got a notice from Comcast that my Atlanta internet is approaching the "cap" for this month. I had no idea there was a cap. Turns out to be 300GB. After that they charge an extra $10 for each 50GB. I really loathe +Comcast, and I wish we had other options.

Their customer service is generally TERRIBLE and their product is overpriced for what you get (ours is billed as 25MB for $50/mth, and we don't get near that speed, even on wired connections). AND it has a cap? Are you kidding me Comcast?

I have not even been home for most of this month. It's summer though, so the kids, who are home, stream stuff -- music and video. I guess that's what's going on. That means 2 streamers and 1 email/light web user (wife) in a household can hit the cap (2/3 of the way... more »

That means 2 streamers and 1 email/light web user (wife) in a household can hit the cap (2/3 of the way through the month too). I understand you might need a cap at outrageous levels, but 300GB is not outrageous.

In Seattle I have a lot more choices. I'm currently using CondoInternet here. Check this shit out Comcast, $60 a month for 100MB unlimited with no cap and not shared (more than I want to pay, but absolutely great product and service).

Please Google Fiber, kick this industry in the ass, and hurry.

Congrats to the FullStory crew! The product looks great (from an I checked out the marketing vid point of view at least, I haven't used it yet), useful, practical, tons of potential, and one of the smartest teams ever assembled.

Oh and hells yeah, another ATL startup in the mix! (Georgia isn't just the wasteland you hear about on "this week in crazy ass gun law news" ;).)

We're finally starting to take the wraps off the new product we've been working on since late last year: +FullStory / fullstory.com

These articles do a pretty good job of covering it, but in a nutshell what we've built is a searchable "DVR" for your web app's user interactions. We believe that if you have a web app, and care about improving user experience and/or doing a better job supporting your customers, you should consider trying FullStory. I know that sounds a little pitchy, but we really are pretty proud of it.

A lot of fun work has gone into implementing recording, playback, and analysis, as well as scaling the whole thing, which has been... non-trivial. As we settle in and get a bit more free time, I'll probably be posting some of the more interesting technical details. We still have a long way to go to realize our vision, but there's some cool stuff in there already (IMNSHO).

You better believe I donated to the Mayday PAC. I believe we seriously need "fundamental reform in the way elections are funded." Right now money runs politics in the states, and that's wrong. It doesn't matter which party you favor, or what your personal views are, having lawmakers beholden to corporations and PACs ruins the legislative process and drowns out the voices of the people, and reason and logic. We need to stop selling elections, and that's what Mayday aims to do. (Yes, it's a PAC, but a PAC that aims to end all PACs, even itself -- check it out.)

I really like Songza. It's the only online streaming music service I really use. I mean I have my own stuff on G-Play Music, but when I want to find new stuff or just chill, I hit up Songza. It's great because of how simple and focused it is -- load it, click 3 buttons, music is on. I congratulate them on getting acquired by Google, but the selfish gene says I hope that doesn't mess up my free and easy streaming service ;).
