For people who think they have NCGS (non-celiac gluten sensitivity), where it hasn’t even been convincingly demonstrated that gluten is actually the component in wheat that causes symptoms, gluten-free cosmetics is nothing but marketing hype feeding into the same marketing hype behind the gluten-free products that are only really needed by people who have true CD (celiac disease) and only debatably helpful to others.

Remember, as I’ve seen pointed out, 93% of consumers purchasing gluten-free products are not diagnosed with CD, but rather do so because of an interest in “health and wellness,” ascetic-based practices of self-improvement, or the “flavor of the month” diet trend. Read more: http://ow.ly/w32TU

JavaScript set back the state of the art in software engineering by at least 15 years, and it's not yet on track to get better. Even improvements such as TypeScript don't have necessary basic OO concepts like abstract methods. Key design patterns simply cannot be implemented.

We are creating a world of throwaway code, enabling and enabled by an inexhaustible supply of developers willing to create (and try) yet another JS framework ("But, see, my new JS framework is for JS ninjas, though..."). The very fact that JS can necessitate so many little frameworks with so little reuse across them is maximally damning. In other words, if the status quo didn't currently suck, there would be no appetite for the next JS framework. And the status quo continues to suck, creating a huge waste of human time and creativity.

P.S. I do get the worse-is-better thing, and of... more »

Kliff doesn’t make this point too explicitly, but this diagnosis has another crucial implication: the benefits of Obamacare, for all its imperfections, are immense. Millions of people who lived extremely anxious lives now have far more security than before. Compared with those benefits, the complaints of some already insured people that they have less choice of doctors than before, or that they’re no longer allowed to retain minimalist plans, look like whining. (And of course not one of the more serious-sounding stories about soaring premiums and all that has held up under scrutiny.)

Meh, mildly interesting, but I never use remote desktop "to get files" (said files are never just on the local computer for me). What I would like is a slick way to control my Android device from my computer for demos and presentations.

There are existing ways to do that, but they're all slow and clunky (or locked to landscape for MHL). We just use a camera device thing most of the time, and that just seems wrong.

Just so we're all clear about the Apple v Samsung shitstorm, here are the actual patents being litigated for the latest round (in the states anyway -- there are versions of this battle happening the world over):

Apple’s patents
US Patent 5,946,647 — Also known as the "quick links" patent, this analyzes text for things like emails and phone numbers and gives you contextual options when you tap them.

US Patent 6,847,959 — Universal search, a patent covering search on the device and the internet at the same time.

US Patent 7,761,414 — Covers data syncing, particularly data that’s being synced while the user is doing something else.

US Patent 8,046,721 — The slide-to-unlock patent gives access to the device when a user swipes their finger across the screen.

Who the hell comes up with the pollen scale, anyway?

Low: 0-14
Medium: 15-89
High: 90-1499
Exteme: 1500+

That's neither linear nor exponential. It's like piecewise-linear with two wildly different slopes.

It's notable that it used to say something like "High: 99-150", but I'm fairly certain that they extended the scale entirely for Atlanta, which was at 5230 yesterday.

Yes, you read that right.

Today’s #AndroidTesting #Protip from +Stephan Linzner is about unit testing your code using  Mockito.

Writing unit tests is an important part of the Android development cycle as it encourages an incremental development approach and allows you to easily refactor your code, to continuously improve its quality. Unit tests are all about dependencies or about replacing dependencies with test doubles [0]. This allows you to run your tests in isolation as much as possible. But this raises the question on how you can efficiently create test doubles in your unit tests. One way to create test doubles on Android is to use Mockito [1]. Mockito is an open source mocking framework that offers a fluent and readable API which allows for both “state-based-testing” (stubbing) as well as “behavioral-testing” (verifications) [2].

To get started with Mockito in your unit tests youneed to inc... more »

So 99% of the people I've met in Seattle are quite nice. That said, the other night my apartment neighbor (I have an apartment part time while in Seattle) decides to move from 1AM to 4AM, and isn't subtle about it -- slamming doors over and over and dumping stuff in the hall and basically wakes up and keeps up the entire floor. Then I walk downstairs after more door slamming at 6AM and see the car he used to make the 500 trips. Talk about the EPITOME of a douchenozzle.

And this isn't the first time that this guy was a total dick. Long story, but wow. It astonishes me how inconsiderate and self-centered some people are.

While I'm ranting about annoying but pointless stuff, the FOUR (count em) top of the site updates/shifts on the Google+ web version now are REALLY IRRITATING. I'm scrolling the page and stuff is jumping around all over on the top distracting me. This is one of those instances where  things are TOO clever (impressive skills you have there, the transitions are smooth, but no, don't do that, just, no).

If your hardware has its own Reddit thread about how to fix it, you have failed: http://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestALaptop/comments/1k3rl4/solutions_for_the_y510p_trackpad_xpost_from/.

I'm just about ready to send my new computer back, dammit. The touchpad is THAT BAD. Random jumps around, random button clicks, really annoying. (And yes, I've calibrated and tried different drivers and much more.) The real bummer in this is that other than the trackpad this thing is great. I like the keyboard, case, screen, etc -- and it's sporting a quad core i7 Haswell CPU and DUAL Nvidia GT755M cards (that run SLI). I also have it running Ubuntu and Windows 8.1 fine (oh I also HATE Retro, but I only boot Windows for games anyway). I don't really know of an alternative.
