After years of being in pieces in my garage, it runs. It finally runs.

I found this thing in the trash 5-6 years ago with the engine locked up. The piston was so fried that I had to saw the connecting rod in two to get the engine apart (it was basically forged/welded together). I replaced the connecting rod and rebuilt crank, then got a new cylinder and piston and rebuilt the head/cam/valves. Next I redid the bottom end, went through everything to check specs, cleaned it, and replaced all seals/gaskets/bolts. Then I rebuilt the clutch and the generator and replaced the points, timed it, and soldered a new condenser on to the coil. Finally I cleaned and kitted the carb (and used electrolysis to clean the inside of the tank). First kick it started. It runs rough with a small backfire at low RPM (sounds too lean on pilot circuit), but it runs. Once it's dialed in I plan to take it BACK... more »

FullStory is the future of web analytics.

Next they need to hire somebody to work on supporting native Android apps and something like viewtreeobserver to capture a similar type of data that can recreate and index the entire session. (And iOS of course.)

Doing manual analytics all over the place is a HUGE pain and huge overhead/cost. You would not believe how much time is spent on that and we still end up with fairly dubious data IMO.

If only +Joel Webber and +Bruce Johnson knew somebody who knew Android stuff and was a generally good dude who might be a cultural fit too, hmmmm. ;)

I've had several people ask me about what +FullStory actually does, so I thought I'd do a quick post to try and explain it a bit. I realize we haven't done the best job communicating this as yet -- we're working on some fairly significant UI and infrastructure changes, and will be updating https://www.fullstory.com/ with a clearer explanation of the service when that's done. We also have plans to make it much easier to try out.

But in the meantime, I can at least demo how playback works. If you follow the link below, you'll see a "playback only" version of the FullStory UI that shows me attempting to use Squarespace (nice app, btw -- I'd never seen it until this morning). Normally, of course, you'd be recording your own web app/site, but I needed something pretty to show off :)

Here's what you're seeing: This looks sort of like a video, but it's actually reconstructing the DOM and user-interactions in the browser. This is an important distinction, because it allows us to search and analyze all the details of the content, site structure, and user interactions. So you can, for example, search for "all logged in users, using Firefox in Latvia, who've clicked on the 'x' button that closes your error dialog". That last bit ("clicked on...") is the most important part -- you can't get that kind of detail without either recording everything or wiring up analytics events manually. We've just barely begun to scratch the surface of this sort of analysis, though, and it's going to be a fun space to explore!

Here's the link: http://goo.gl/7lQD11

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. And if you think people you know might be interested in this, please feel free to share :)___FullStory is the future of web analytics.

Another get off my lawn moment:

Email is for text. Text with punctuation in a professional setting. Cut the HTML shit out, and silly fonts, and spell words properly, and please use punctuation. A question mark actually conveys meaning.

A giant purple Barney font, and complete lack of punctuation is super annoying. And, no question marks mean I didn't know you asked a question. If you're waiting on me to answer, and you didn't actually ask, you might be waiting a long time.

Now all of the sudden Republicans give a shit about who visits France and why? Really? Guys, remember all your "Freedom Fries" bullshit, and your "they've never won any wars anyway" ignorant blather (that one is particularly amusing to me considering the fucking American Revolution), and so on?

I mean you guys are the kings of fake outrage, but this is taking it to a new level, bravo (uh, that means well done, in fancy French).

(A small consolation over the poor showing of the actual Broncos, who likely won't have that kind of talent on a team again in a long time.)

I just called a guy in Ireland who has the same name as me and told him that his email address is NOT charliecollins@<domain>.com, because that is my email address.

I said, cool name and all mate, but you need to figure out how email works. I now have all your upcoming travel details (just sent to me by Aer Lingus) and I've been getting financial stuff and appointments that are yours for a long time. Each time I try to reply to the place and or all your friends that are CC'd (to have them tell you to cut it out), but it doesn't stop -- so finally I called.

Guy was nice enough, and said his email is supposed to be charliecollins34 or something or other. I said yeah, make sure to use those numbers from now on, this is getting old.

cheers
The real Charlie Collins ;)

Yesterday I called out Microsoft for trying to cram unwanted crap into an install, so today I'd be remiss if I didn't say Oracle, you suck too. I had to use another thing for work on an unfamiliar machine (long story, drive problems), and it ended up trying to run an applet (shudder, if your software requires an Applet in 2015 you are also a clown -- I'm looking at you Cisco).

So I had to go hit the Java installer -- no Oracle, fuck no, I don't want the "Ask Search" bar just because I'm trying to run an applet. Can we all just stop this shit please? Yesterday I called out Microsoft for trying to cram unwanted crap into an install, so today I'd be remiss if I didn't say Oracle, you suck too. I had to use another thing for work on an unfamiliar machine (long story, drive problems), and it ended up trying to run an applet (shudder, if your software requires an Applet in 2015 you are also a clown -- I'm looking at you Cisco).

So I had to go hit the Java installer -- no Oracle, fuck no, I don't want the "Ask Search" bar just because I'm trying to run an applet. Can we all just stop this shit please? Yeah, I know, you've heard this lame rant before, but come on, it's 2015 now and we're still trying to cram shit into search bars and so on?

If nobody is downloading and installing your software it's because NOBODY WANTS YOUR SHITTY SOFTWARE, not because they aren't sure how to get it. Thus you sneakily bundling it with stuff people must have or do want, and making it an opt OUT shell game to NOT install it is total douchebaggery. I know we all know this, but just to say it out loud, to all the suits in your marketing meeting who forced you to include this crap, and the execs who allowed it, this isn't real market share, it's just aggravation, and, you suck.___

Time for another long cord-cutting post!

It looks like there are some speed bumps on the way to HBO finally getting a streaming service all us poor, unwashed, cable-less masses can use (http://arstechnica.com/business/2014/12/hbo-cto-resigns-as-platform-for-standalone-streaming-service-scrapped/).

In a nutshell, it appears that HBO Go was kind of a mess, and they were building something to replace it. There was a team in Seattle managing both of these projects, run by an ex-Microsoft manager. Said manager was apparently both screwing up the new project, and playing ugly corporate politics with HBO Go to grow the Seattle office further. Once the whole thing finally fell apart, he "resigned" and HBO contracted with Major League Baseball to run the service for them.

MLB, wut?! Well, it turns out that they've gotten quite good at handling large-scale streaming services, and are also handling all of ESPN's streaming video, along with many other (not all sports-related) services. So good on 'em for building good technology for their own services and realizing they can sell it on to others.

At the same time, here's a bit of confirmation of the kind of legal tightrope HBO has to walk in order to actually offer a streaming service (http://arstechnica.com/business/2014/12/directtv-contract-punishes-hbo-if-streaming-only-gets-too-popular-sources-say/). This is unsurprising, but interesting to see it confirmed.

Here's how I suspect this plays out in the long run:

- Companies like HBO become effectively studios for long-form serialized video. HBO itself tried and failed to become a technology company. That ship will have sailed for others eventually.

- MLB (and possibly others in the same boat) will spin off their technology divisions, so that the HBOs of the world can run them as white-label streaming services. These will sit alongside the Google/Apple/Amazons as different ways of getting streams.

- The Comcasts of the world will either morph into very effective bit-stream providers, or wither away.

- Nothing good awaits DirectTV, as their technology is no good for bidirectional Internet connections.

- The big networks either become studios alongside HBO et al, or wither away as well. This will take a long time, but it will happen.

What I'm not clear on is at what point, if any, the HBOs give up requiring a studio-specific subscription to get access to recent episodes. This is probably much more lucrative than just selling them on Amazon, but you can only maintain it as long as you provide so much good material that people are willing to accept paying a flat fee.

For the rest of us, the future looks something like this: You pay for an Internet connection. You get the video you watch from a combination of a la carte purchases, and a few subscriptions. You'll have subscriptions either for price optimization (e.g., Amazon Prime) or access (e.g., HBO, ESPN).

I believe the floodgates will open sooner than many expect. Once HBO falls, sports streaming is the last big holdout. Once that falls, a lot of people are going to reevaluate their cable bills. This is a Good Thing™.

It needed exhaust anyway, so I decided to just get headers and convert to dual. I say I got it "mostly" done because, as you tell from these pics, I have the header back exhaust too low, and I need to realign the outlets in the back a little.

Once it's dialed in I plan to take it BACK... more »

I'm not really a big motorcycle rider, but I like fixing up old stuff and messing with engines, so this has been a fun project.  ___

Dear internets, how are you guys doing debugging on Android 4.x with ART?

I know this was a known issue, and it's fixed in AOSP, but what about Nexus 5 devices and such that are running ART now and not running L? Are those just hosed?

(I need to run ART, we've had several bugs that only occurred on ART and were affecting real users -- and I don't really want to use an early release build, because I want to mimic what users are actually using -- they have 4.4 and click on ART in settings. I guess I'll just setup two different devices, one for debugging with Dalvik and 4.4, and one with ART for other tests with 4.4.)

I'm sure excited about Lollipop and Material Design, and I'm impressed with the N6 specs (holy screen density Batman), but I'm troubled by the price.

I don't mean to be one of those price whiners, but I guess I've come to expect some heavy subsidies on a Nexus device. I think there are probably several factors going on here. First, I imagine Google didn't want to cannibalize all the other Android device manufacturers by making a device that is superior to everything else out there AND making it a lot cheaper. And, second, I bet this thing just cost a lot more to make.

That said though, at $650USD (if early reports are accurate), your'e talking almost twice what an N5 costs, or more relevantly twice what a OnePlus One costs. Couple that with the fact that Lollipop will bema... more »

That said though, at $650USD (if early reports are accurate), your'e talking almost twice what an N5 costs, or more relevantly twice what a OnePlus One costs. Couple that with the fact that Lollipop will be made available on many different devices (thankfully, props to Google for that one), and we're really just talking about the price for the hardware.

Is an N6 worth TWO OnePlus Ones? I'm gonna have to say nope, it's not. Unfortunately I think that will hamper sales of the N6 and it might look like a flop in a misguided sales only context. I don't think Google cares. They want a flagship device that doesn't cannibalize other stuff, and sales of it doesn't really matter. However, not subsidizing the heck out of it sets a different tone with Nexus fans, and will make people like me whine about it ;).

(As for the subsidizing, to be honest, I expect it with a Nexus device. I mean I'm basically carrying our your ad delivery platform and looking at it for hours every day, in which case you can afford to spot me a couple hundred bucks up front. The problem with that, of course, is that other carriers and manufacturers can't compete with that, so the cannibalization thing comes back into play.)___

Comcast: $66.95 a month for 20MBPs shared and almost never hits the advertised speed. Also has a MOTHER FUCKING CAP of 250GB/mth which streaming video easily exceeds, so they are nice enough to CHARGE ME ANOTHER $10 per 50GB each month. Did I say fuck already?  Also their customer service is terrible. I am looking for any way to escape dealing with this company on all levels. They keep pestering me to use their TV service (yeah, they market stuff to me all the time, hooray!) and I tell them hells no.
