Sad day for me. Adobe has announced that the product that I learned design on/with is being deprecated (killed). RIP Fireworks.

Why am I sad?
(and just so we are clear, I am not upset about moving to subscription only model)

Fireworks is a piece of software that Adobe inherited when they bought Macromedia (remember that company?) and they never really did much with it. It has been buggy, sluggish, and feature lacking for a long time.

So why do you use it?
Good question. The answer is that Fireworks is the only product that Adobe makes whose sole purpose is screen design. If the design you were working on would be rendered on a screen, Fireworks worked great.

Unlike Photoshop with it's backwards support for vectors and illustrator with is crappy support for bitmaps, Fireworks combined both seamlessly so that they could live together in harmony on the... more »

Why doesn't Sony just release the #theinterview  online, for free or at most $.99?  If the terrorists didn't want the film screened, Sony is just doing exactly what they wanted all along and sending the wrong message. They are painting a target on every film and television organization that says 'if you disagree with our content, just hack us to have it suppressed.'

But once the film goes out, it will be viewed by many more people in a far shorter time. #releaseitnow

I'm a designer, and I can directly trace my design career back to a bootlegged copy of Macromedia Studio 4, and shortly thereafter to Macromedia Studio MX that I received in 2002.  At that point in time, I was more interested in Dreamweaver but I soon realized that I needed an image editor to make cool web graphics and buttons.  And so, I started down the path toward design.

I've posted about my love of Fireworks as a tool that I rely on every day to get my job done. It is better than Photoshop for design for so many reasons and I even teach a class at Google to Eng/PM about using it in their workflow (because it is so easy to learn).

It seems like they were worried that any other tool that had a bitmap editor in it would cannibalize on sales of Photoshop. So sad, but I continue to use it because I haven't found anything better...until today.

Sketch v3 is out today, and I think that with this version, it might be time to switch. This would also mean dumping Windows in favor of a fully Mac based design workflow (which I have resisted).

It is so nice to have a company that a)actually cares about and understands their users and their workflow, b) releases updates at a rapid pace, and c) doesn't charge a million dollars for it.

Keep up the good work, guys!___

Huge update. If you use iOS, this is a must have release! Let us know what you think.

Hangouts 2.0 for iOS: more reliable, more fun!

Today we’re launching the newest version of Hangouts for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, ready to download now on iTunes (http://goo.gl/FDOfq). The app has a brand new look and feel, is super easy to navigate, and includes a bunch of performance improvements. You can still make free voice and video calls, of course. Or send a quick photo. But we’re adding a few more features we think you’ll love:

- Stickers: express your mood with fun animated stickers. Think of them as emoji, but even more awesome.

- Video Messages: record and send short videos to everyone in the conversation. Now you can really say what you need to say.

- Location sharing: send a map of your current location with a few simple taps. Great for coordinating the whole gang when you’re ready to hangout IRL.

- Optimized for the iPad: enjoy big, beautiful video calls, and a two-pane conversation view. Perfect for the iPad’s larger screen.

We hope you enjoy the new Hangouts for iOS. As always, your feedback is an important part of making the app better, so give the new version a spin (http://goo.gl/FDOfq) and let us know what you think!

FYI, regarding Google Voice and Hangouts.

An update on Google Voice

We are rolling out a new version of the Google+ Hangouts app (goo.gl/XkHn03) for Android, which includes support for SMS and MMS messages. While this is a great step forward, we still have a lot of work to do, specifically around Google Voice:

- Unfortunately, today’s update does not work with Google Voice numbers unless you’ve enabled Google Voice on your Sprint phone. But rest assured, we’re working to support SMS messages for all Google Voice phone numbers by early next year. And don’t worry, your Voice number will go unchanged.

- We hear you loud and clear: you want Google Voice phone numbers outside the US and to support MMS. We are listening and working hard to make this happen, but we need to work with carriers and this can take some time.

- Finally, we want to make Google Voice as secure as possible. There are a few third-party applications that provide calling and SMS services by making unauthorized use of Google Voice. These apps violate our Terms of Service and pose a threat to your security, so we’re notifying these app developers that they must stop making unauthorized use of Google Voice to run their services and transition users by May 15, 2014.

We know that communicating with your friends and family should be easy and that you want one app that can do it all. We’re working hard to deliver that experience for everyone.  It will take some time before Google Voice is fully integrated into Hangouts, and we appreciate your patience along the way.___FYI, regarding Google Voice and Hangouts.

This is a good video not only because it is fun to watch a talented artist like +Will Terrell draw, but it is good advice for creatives and artists who are trying to make it on their own.

I made a lot of these mistakes when I worked on my own, and it is helpful to get advice and understand risks before you get started, or you'll make the same mistakes too.

This is a great update for Hangouts On Air!  Glad to have been a part of it. Let me know what you think.

Live Q&A for Hangouts On Air: interact with all your viewers

With Hangouts On Air, you can take a group video call and broadcast it to the world. And we've seen everything from concerts to political debates to online classes share their conversations 'On Air.' What's been missing, however, is a way to interact with your live audience (vs. only the people onscreen). Not any more.

Today we're introducing Live Q&A for Hangouts On Air — the first of many features to help you engage with your viewers. If you’re hosting the broadcast, you'll now be able to:

- Solicit questions from up to a million concurrent viewers
- Select and answer questions live
- Timestamp the YouTube recording by marking questions as you answer them

If instead you're watching the Hangout On Air, you'll now be able to ask and vote on questions live, as well as replay the Q&A even after the broadcast is over.

We're rolling out Live Q&A over the next few days (fully on desktop, view-only on Android), so look for the new features the next time you start or watch a Hangout On Air. In the meantime, you can check out these examples to see how Live Q&A can enhance your broadcasts:

- Art and Inquiry by +MoMA Edu: http://goo.gl/hLohOv
- Live Car Talk by +Scotty Kilmer: http://goo.gl/cMZtz4
- Sony vs. Nikon by +Trey Ratcliff: http://goo.gl/4xEFXW

Keep the feedback coming, and keep those broadcasts going!

Since getting the OMD E-M5, I've bought 2 adapters which allow me to shoot with alternate lens mount, Nikon F and Pentax K (which is how I learned photography).

This was taken with a 30+ year old Sears (yup, Sears) 135 F2.8 Macro.  The lens adds the glow when in macro, and I added a bit of color correction in Camera Raw. An interesting effect, and certainly a fun lens.  Brings back lots of memories of the days when I shot with film, full manual.

More improvements to Hangouts On Air

We recently launched some On Air features to improve overall video quality (goo.gl/J7qTP). Today we're enhancing the viewer experience even further with a number of updates, including:

1) Hide the film strip at any time. The updated Cameraman app (http://goo.gl/NBbjc) lets you broadcast and record only the main video feed whenever you want. Bringing back the film strip is likewise just a click away.

2) Mute new participants, automatically. To reduce interruptions during your broadcast, the new Cameraman app also lets you mute new participants whenever they join.

3) Better screencasts and 1-2 person broadcasts, by default. Regardless whether you use the Cameraman app, we'll hide the film strip whenever you're screencasting and/or when there's only 1-2 participants.

Give the updates a try, and let us know what you think! #googleplusupdate #hangoutsonair___A bit late to the party, but important nonetheless...

Know someone with similar symptoms? Perhaps this new research initiative can help them.

About 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse.  At the time I didn’t think much about it.  But my voice never fully recovered.  So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis.  This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly.  Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold.  It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found.

While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord.  But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.

Fast forward to last summer, when the same pattern repeated itself — a cold followed by a hoarse voice. Once again things didn’t fully improve, so I went in for a check-up and was told that my second vocal cord now had limited movement as well. Again, after a thorough examination, the doctors weren’t able to identify a cause.

Thankfully, after some initial recovery I’m fully able to do all I need to at home and at work, though my voice is softer than before. And giving long monologues is more tedious for me and probably the audience.  But overall over the last year there has been some improvement with people telling me they think I sound better.  Vocal cord nerve issues can also affect your breathing, so my ability to exercise at peak aerobic capacity is somewhat reduced.  That said, my friends still think I have way more stamina than them when we go kitesurfing!  And Sergey says I’m probably a better CEO because I choose my words more carefully.  So surprisingly, overall I am feeling very lucky.

Interestingly, while the nerves for your vocal cords take quite different routes through your body, they both pass your thyroid.  So in searching for a cause for both nerves that was an obvious place to look. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in 2003.  This is a fairly common benign inflammatory condition of the thyroid which causes me no problems.  It is unclear if this is a factor in the vocal cord condition, or whether both conditions were triggered by a virus.

In this journey I have learned a lot more about voice issues.  Though my condition seems to be very rare, there are a significant number of people who develop issues with one vocal nerve.  In seeing different specialists, I met one doctor — Dr. Steven Zeitels from the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center — who is really excited about the potential to improve vocal cord nerve function.  So I’ve arranged to fund a significant research program through the Voice Health Institute, which he will lead.  Thanks a bunch to my amazing wife Lucy, for her companionship through this journey and for helping oversee this project and get it off the ground.  Also, thanks to the many people who have helped with advice and information many of whom I have not had a chance to thank yet.

Finally, we’ve put together a patient survey to gather information about other people with similar conditions.  As it’s fairly rare, there’s little data available today — and the team hopes that with more information they can make faster progress.  If you have similar symptoms you can fill it out here: voicehealth.org/ip___Know someone with similar symptoms? Perhaps this new research initiative can help them.

I found this article to be very much worth the read.  The depth of reporting, and the history was something that I did not know.

Most controversial quote:
“When will the world’s supply of oil be exhausted?” the MIT economist Morris Adelman has written. “The best one-word answer: never.”

Don't comment unless you've read the whole thing. It's only 11,000 words.

Unlike Photoshop with it's backwards support for vectors and illustrator with is crappy support for bitmaps, Fireworks combined both seamlessly so that they could live together in harmony on the same canvas.  You didn't need to leave the app to do something and come back, you could pretty much design everything in Fireworks.  It was great.

When combined with the way that it handled flows with pages, and the control you have over exporting for the web (32bit PNG's anyone?) I could really tell a story in Fireworks. No other Adobe app really works the way that Fireworks does in this regard.

So what are you going to do now?
I'm not sure. After I get over it (and just so we are clear, there are many many designers at Google and across the web who love Fireworks like I do) because frankly we all knew that this was coming, I need to learn a new workflow.

Maybe I will start to use Photoshop for design. I don't like the way that you select objects/layers in Photoshop, though, and for the type of work that I do, Photoshop's workflow just doesn't make sense. Not to mention that the source files for Photoshop are massive.

Illustrator is an option too, but the way that it handles bitmaps is not great. And I hate the way that color selection works in Illustrator works.

The dark horse here is actually Adobe inDesign (yes, I know that this is a printing and physical page layout tool) because it combines a bunch of great layout features with the best type system of any of Adobe's apps.

Finally, maybe Adobe isn't the right toolset for me anymore. Perhaps they don't get it. I could design in code, but I think i will slow down if I do. Other options include Sketch (Mac only, unfortunately), or half a dozen different other mac photo editors. There are also a few only only apps that could potentially work out for my personal, non-Google projects.

I'll let you know how it goes. I'll probably end up trying a bunch of different options and hopefully find a new workflow that will work.___

I just transferred my last 2 domain names from GoDaddy to Hover. I feel free.  I like Hover because they only do one thing, domains. No hosting, no nonsense, and they include domain name privacy for FREE.

Great service, highly recommended.

The hangouts updates keep coming!

Call up to five people from inside Hangouts

We recently made it easier to call someone from a Hangout (http://goo.gl/6vMiS), and starting today, you can have up to five telephone participants (instead of just two)! To give it a try, just click "+ Add Telephone" when inviting someone to your Hangout, then dial their number.

Remote Desktop + Hangouts = AWESOME!

This is a great new update. Glad to have been a part of it. Let me know what you think!

Hangouts Remote Desktop: tech support with a personal touch

For those of you who play tech support for friends and family, there’s now a Hangouts app to make things easier -- powered by the same technology behind Chrome Remote Desktop.

Hangouts Remote Desktop lets you help others by controlling their computer remotely (with their permission, of course). And because you’re both in a Hangout, you can talk with and see each other during the session.

To get started, just start a Hangout and click View More Apps > Add Apps > Hangouts Remote Desktop.

Let us know what you think, and please keep the feedback coming!

This is a great app, which I happen to use.  The new updates in v2 take it from pretty cool to really awesome.  Keep up the good work, guys!

AirDroid 2 is now live on Google Play!

AirDroid philosophy:
※ One less cable.
Move things on and off your Android device without a USB cable. Even when the device is not nearby.
※ One less screen.
Send and receive SMS from your big-screen computer, without being distracted by the small-screen thing.
※ One less worry.
Locate and lock your Android when it’s lost. Cannot get it back? Simply wipe all data remotely.

I have really been enjoying watching the videos in this series...

In honor of the release of Get Lucky, today, the first single from Daft Punk's Random Access memories.
Daft Punk | Random Access Memories | The Collaborators: Todd Edwards

The reason I like videos like this, is that they tell the story of creating something, and more often than not, the great "somethings" take so much to make, but we don't have any idea when we watch, the story behind it.  I love to here the stories, and know what it took to make this stuff.

My new camera, the Olympus OM-D EM-5 with the 45mm f1.8.

So far so good.  Transitioning from a DSLR to µ4/3 is an interesting change.

This is a great deal on a AWESOME piece of software.  For the price, I don't know of a better set of plugins. Silver Efex Pro, the black and white processing plugin is worth that price all by itself, and you get so much more.

Try it out, and see how much better your photos can look.

The Nik Collection by Google: photography first, for professionals and more

Here on the Google+ Photos team, we're busy building tools for all kinds of photographers. Today, and for all the professionals out there, we're bundling the complete set of Nik plug-ins as the Nik Collection by Google. We're especially excited about three things:

1) It's more affordable. The entire set of plug-ins for Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture only costs $149 (versus the previous $499).

2) It's really powerful. The Nik Collection by Google gives you tools for everything from noise reduction and HDR imaging to creative effects and image sharpening (and lots more).

3) It's free to try. You can visit niksoftware.com for a 15-day free trial of the Collection.

If you've already purchased one or more Nik plug-ins in the past, then don't worry, we've got you covered. In fact: we're going to upgrade you to the entire Nik Collection by Google for free. Just keep an eye out for emailed instructions in the next few days.

Once you've got a Nik Collection shot that you're excited about, feel free to share it with the Google+ community. Simply tag your public pictures with  #nikcollection , and we'll reshare some favorites from the +Google+ page. We can't wait to see what you'll create!

This is a huge update. I am really excited about this, not only because I have been working on it for a long time, but because of the way that I know you, the community will use this.  People make great make memories all the time in Hangouts, and now you have an easy way to share them.

Introducing the Hangouts Capture app: snap & save moments as they happen

Google+ Hangouts bring people together, and when they do, all sorts of awesome can unfold. Maybe it's reading a bedtime story to your grandkids across the country. Maybe it's taking a cooking class from your kitchen. Or maybe it's answering questions from your constituents. We hear lots of great stories (http://goo.gl/ENWXo).

The challenge, oftentimes, is capturing your favorite moments as they happen, so today we're introducing the new Hangouts Capture app. With it you can take pictures of your Hangouts-in-progress, including a number of features not available in the usual screenshot workarounds:

- Once you’ve opened the Hangouts Capture app, you can snap photos of your Hangout view with a single click
- All photos are saved to a shared album, visible only to other Hangout invitees
- You can view these photos while inside the Hangout, when browsing your photo albums, or by visiting the original Hangout post
- And, importantly, you’ll always know when the app is in use: when you join a Hangout, when someone opens the app, and whenever a picture is taken

The Hangouts Capture app will soon be available worldwide, so look for it the next time you join a Hangout. Together with Effects, YouTube and other apps, we hope you’ll find Hangouts an even better way to make memories together.
