Gailen Mapes68,609Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera I-K - 6 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to October 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting September 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-10-06 10:20:50135001

This is because I start compiling the next circles 5 days after publishing. I send a circle notification, a picture notification, and I plus mention everyone in the circle, which gives everyone three chances to know they are included. If you want to make sure you don't miss my circle posts, you should create a circle called "Notify Me", add me to it, and set notifications to "On". In any case, don't worry - you can get into next week's circles by sharing this one*     #teamelite  members - see nearer the end for instructions for the next stage!     #eliteinnercircle *I have had so many great     #teamelite  engagers that I need three whole circles - why are they     #teamelite  engagers, as opposed to normal engagers? These are the ones who have shared my shared circles - you have close to 1,400 circle sharers here for you to add across these three circles. You should add people in these circles, because they are active engagers and will brighten up your Google Plus experience. I'm not sure you could handle all that Google Plus engagement, so think twice before you do so!My     #teamelite  circles are extensively shared by the top circle sharers on Google Plus, so naturally, membership of     #teamelite  is very exclusive and there is a lot of demand to get in.To get in, and to ensure you stay in     #teamelite  you need to do the following:1. Joni at 9 Months Old

Joni has come a long way from the photograph of her that you see at the beginning of this album. Not only has she grown so that she looks almost adult, but she is (mostly) obedient enough to be able to walk with us off her leash, in the woods and on the beach at least. She doesn't exactly walk to heel (not at all, to be honest unless she is on the leash) but she runs and walks a little way ahead before pausing and turning to see if we are coming along behind her. She will wait if I tell her to and will even sit when I ask, even though I am not nearby. If she thinks she knows where we are going she will sometimes run too far ahead, so this is something we have to work on, but generally she is getting better and better all the time.

Here you see her at 9 months old, sitting up on the top of a bank in the woods. As part of the obedience exercises I... more »

Late Afternoon Light, September, Annapolis Valley, NS

There are moments when the light is special in that 'Golden Hour' before sunset or after sunrise and it filters down between the clouds in a darkening, heavy sky. At times you see this light and you can't do anything about it. Perhaps you don't have your camera, or there is just no scenery to feature. Or maybe you are in heavy traffic and can't get out without creating a hazard.

On this day, I was coming home and saw these golden and darkening conditions developing in the distance. I drove past my favourite farm, but the light wasn't going to hit it. I kept driving and watching. As I came down towards Hillaton, I saw the clouds becoming heavier over the North Mountain and the mist settling on the hills beneath, all the time I was driving and watching for the scene that would be the one.

Sunset Seen From the Ocean Floor

With such low and high tides as we have here, I have found myself both scrambling to dry land up the cliffs on the rocks (as in the other day) and walking far out into the Bay of Fundy on land (not very dry) which is, twice a day buried deep under the waves.  I have even felt disturbed at the thought, wondering if I might end up sucked down into a sinkhole, never to be seen again. I was having just such thoughts the other evening as we were out walking Joni, when I turned around and saw the sky. The rivulets running down from streams that come from those cliffs reflected the clouds and evening light and colours, drawing my eye up to the land and then that dramatic sky.

Attention Please Google Plus Helpers

Below this was my comment on the original posting. I am including it here so that my feelings are made clear. But +Natosha Davis has a genuine problem and others are also experiencing it. Can someone from Google help her out and fix the problem?

I am hating all the messages about 'let's move out'.
It's making me bored with my notification messages and my stream for the number I see when all they are doing is talking about another network.

And no, I'm not moving out.

I like it here. I grew up as a photographer here and learned so much from the mentorships I was given freely and hopefully I helped others learn on the ones I helped mentor. I even held am still holding a couple of (free) private ones for those who are shy or just close friends.

I understand that there are some real issues going on with G+.
But I love being able to plus one the posts I like (even if they don't always stick) and know who else has commented on them. And I like being able to see a photo properly without scrolling. And I like being able to zoom in to see detail (and check metadata if I am curious as to how the shot was taken, or if the poster really took that image himself). And I love being able to actually recognise who has posted because their name is clearly visible. And I love being able to use a decent android app. Because often I access on mobile.

So I shall keep posting here. Because I like it. Warts and all.

Hold on Natosha, that can only be a temporary glitch. This ship has not been abandoned.

(Probably) Immature Wood Duck

Until I learn otherwise, I am saying that it is probably an immature female wood duck, as identified by +Mike Goodwin and seconded by +Stephen Thackeray -  thanks a lot you two! I will change the title once we are 100% sure.

Another young bird photographed on the same overcast rainy day in Miner's Marsh in August. I thought it was a young mallard, but I see more clearly now that it probably isn't, as there seem to be no photographs of mallards with white stripes around the eyes and the base of the bill is not the right colour. There are many wrong things about it (not wrong, of course, just wrong for mallard) in my thinking, so I am stumped here. My bird app has not come up with an answer. Can you?

If you can identify it I will amend the title with the species name and credit you with the identification! (Now there'sinc... more »

Immature Pied-Billed Grebe

I walked around the Kentville Miner's Marsh area a few weeks ago, on a dull day and managed to see quite a number of wildfowl, many of which were too far away to get decent photographs especially as the light was poor and it was windy. This youngster was swimming and diving not too far from the shore and I got several of him.  I thought at the time that when he went underwater it was almost as if he didn't so much dive as simply submerge out of sight. Almost as if he sank underwater.

He was a little hard for me to identify and even another (much better) bird photographer didn't have any idea what he might be, looking at my photographs. I was a little disheartened (feeling that my images had not done the bird justice) until I found it on my bird identification app and the images of it were no better than this one. He looks very odd, quite like a clown as the article below says.

Today I found this information about the species, which is the second smallest grebe found in North America. http://ecobirder.blogspot.ca/2010/11/adventures-of-clown-duck.html

When I saw this, I pulled the car quickly around the corner onto the hard shoulder (light shifts rapidly in this situation, I didn't want to lose it) and, grabbing the camera I jumped out of the car, all the time clicking the shutter at the scene, just in case the light changed and I lost it.

Soon these trees will be turning wonderful colours of red and gold, but now the fields are gold with harvest, surrounded by the deep greens.

Working Horses for Farm Friday!

This pair of draught horses was in a field not far from where we live. The older one was quite protective of the younger so they both came over to see what I was up to. Not many people use horses for working the land any more, but they do a great job of pulling timber out of woods that are inaccessible to vehicles in winter. They are light on the land compared to tractors, non polluting, quiet, willing and companionable and can help produce their own food. It is too bad they are not a common sight except at farm fairs.

Zippy-But not much use for Purposes of ID

The village has, with a lot of love and care, created a nature walk through woods that border our property. It has many little trails that twist and wind their way through the forest and along the edge of the fields. At one place, not too far from the school playground, there is an all weather fitness equipment area. (Take the 'all weather' bit with a pinch of salt, of course.) The purpose of this path is to encourage villagers to get outdoors and exercise themselves. There are projects for school children that are created around this path that include both exercise and learning experiences - today there were two groups of different ages, one using a GPS device, presumably to find their schoolmates we could just about hear in another part of the trail, the younger class children simply running along it.

From the outset this path was for those on non motorized forms of transport: feet, snowshoes, skis and even bicycles. Unfortunately there are no signs in place to indicate this restriction and the paths are being ruined by heavy fast two or four wheeled vehicles in winter and in summer. In the winter they form ruts that make it very difficult to walk along the trail. In the summer they can represent a hazard to walkers and their dogs. They also gradually are harming the roots of the trees that border the path. In time they will start to die back. The village has been unable to identify the infringers and have asked us to try to photograph them for identification. So here is one of them. :D

Signs and a few strategically placed bollards would do a better job, I think.

As part of the obedience exercises I practice with her, she will run up the bank and sit and wait until I tell her that she can come down and carry on along the path. The way I taught her to do that was by running up and down the bank myself until she caught on. I leave you to imagine that. She has been running through the damp fields and woods as you can see, but that is what a dog loves to do.

Just Because This Makes Me Smile

There is something about this image that made me smile at the moment I first saw the scene and then the photograph. It's hard to define, but it's undeniable and I would not want to deny something that brings happiness simply in being.

I hope it brings some joy into your Friday and lingers over the weekend, too.

What if Prince Edward Island Went Completely Organic?

If you are able to watch this short video (around 25 minutes long and free viewing for a short time only) you will see organic farmers discussing their methods and thoughts for the future of their land. You will also hear the beautiful poetry of Tanya Davis.

Belted Galloway Cattle in Nova Scotia

This sleek and healthy looking herd of Belted Galloway cattle are on a farm which is only a few miles down the road from where we live. It is unusual to see these cattle, at least around here so I thought I would share this image, with the Farm Friday fans.

Because Everyone Needs a Little Peace and Tranquility

The coast of Nova Scotia is varied in its makeup, even along stretches of the same beach. You can be clambering over boulders, walking through mud with long bright green sea grasses underfoot or across pebbles and then suddenly come to an expanse of sand reminiscent of the most beautiful tropical beaches. The gentle lapping of the waves as the tide recedes has a calming effect on our minds that can get through to us and have a positive affect on the rest of our day in spite of the stressful lives we live.

This is Kingsport Beach in the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia, looking at the cliffs of Blomidon in the distance.

Fingers of Light

Why is it that when you have an actual appointment (with a time, rather than a vague 'see you tomorrow morning') you see a scene before you that is so unusual and beautiful that it forces you to stop? I hate being late, but with such moments, you just have to pull over and pick up the camera (I was so glad I had it with me). This was such a scene. I hadn't time to compose it carefully, nor to deliberate as to the best vantage point. I was on a road, traffic was passing us and this severely restricted me. I took 2 photographs and then had to get back into the car and carry on. The fingers of light were reaching down through the clouds towards the hills that were shrouded in mist. The Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia.

Great Slideshow by Canadian Woodworking Magazine

They made a lovely job of this slideshow about +Steven Kennard to accompany the articles about (and also one he wrote)  him in this latest issue of the magazine. I took some of the images in it, so I was really pleased with the use of them.

Thought I would share it here as it has just come out

Excellent post by +Alex Lapidus - thanks Alex.

Google, or at least +Brian Matiash is actively seeking suggestions on how they can improve our G+ experience.

Please put any of your own suggestions in comments on the original post.

Feedback on Google Plus

+Brian Matiash has recently invited us to send him feedback on Google Plus, at matiash@google.com, and I'm happy to take him up on it!  I've pasted my note to him below; I'm certainly looking forward to your comments to me, but I also encourage everyone to take some time and send Brian your own thoughts about the platform.

+Sumit Sen +Robin Griggs Wood +Thomas Hawk You may have other avenues for providing feedback, but I know that all of you have been engaged for a long time with helping build this community; I'm hoping this is a productive time to rekindle the discussion.

My goal is simply to try to improve what Google Plus is, not to imagine something very different that it might become.  And I’m speaking for myself; this isn’t, at least for now, an attempt to canvas the whole community for ideas.  I do think most active photographers on G+ want pretty much what I want, but I’m really just trying to express what matters to me and why.  I’m also not trying to tell Google how to win more active users or improve engagement outside the photography community; I’m speaking as an active user myself, who hopefully creates original content that helps create activity within the platform.  In that way I am a facilitator, but I understand that I am not a customer, as I neither advertise nor view any advertising.  If your entire future is in cats, GIFs and phone selfies, I’ll go quietly.

A.  Identity
If I’m going to invest any time or effort in G+ as my online face to the world (or one of them), I have to be able to choose what I wish to present, to control what about me can be viewed.  It is absolutely miserable to be forced by some “feature” to actively misrepresent myself, by showing the wrong posts, photos or personal information.  When it comes to my profile, I’m able to pick and choose what to show and which tabs, and I can exclude Community posts – all good.  But my ability to choose and organize the photos I present is disastrous and has continually worsened.  I’ve chosen to be here as a photographer and nothing more or less, and I can’t show my photography in an acceptable way.

Request 1:  Present photos in albums.
1a.  When someone clicks on the Photos tab on my Profile, they should see the Albums view (https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/104294083885937159989/albums ).  I should be able to freely organize the order of my albums (including moving Photos from Posts and Profile Photos from the top slots).
1b.  When someone clicks on an album, they should see all the photos in that album.  I should be able to freely organize the order of photos within the album.  I should be able to select a vertical or portrait image as an album cover without it being cropped or distorted.
1c.  There should be no view showing only “Highlights,” either inside or outside an album.   If there were, I should be able to select which images are included, what order they are shown in, and if necessary, to control any other structure (i.e. if they’re grouped by album, then I should be able to set the order of albums for showing Highlights).
1d.  I have no interest in “Photos of You” and when you placed it at the top of my Profile tab, I untagged myself in every image, and blocked all tagging of me (I then tagged myself in a few favorite photos that aren’t of me).  If it needs to exist for some audience, make it an album whose position I can determine (i.e. I can bury it at the bottom of the Albums view, while someone else could choose to put it at the top).

Request 2: Fix Event Behavior.
2a. If I post to an Event, it should result in a single post on my Profile and in others’ streams.  Currently it produces three: a “normal” post, an Event post, and an orphan image.
2b.  I should have the option of showing Event posts on my profile or not, just as I have for Community posts.  By default, nobody should see my posts to an Event unless they have accepted an invitation to that Event.
2c. If I post a photo to an Event, I should be able to manage that photo in an existing album (or not, as I choose), rather than having a new album created.
2d.  If someone clicks on one of my photos from an Event, it should go to the lightbox and then to my album or Profile, not to Event images by other people or Event posts unrelated to me.  My photos should not be buried in an Event album or downloadable in bulk with other people’s images through an Event.
I’ll address Event invitations and notifications separately.

Request 3: Stop Post Duplication
In addition to Event posts, almost all photo posts in private Communities have produced duplicate photos in the Community stream for a long time now, and recently that behavior is leaking into the main stream and creating clutter.  I’m sure you’re familiar with the problem, but one is the original post and the other corresponds to activity from the lightbox view.

Request 4: Allow Me to Sell.
This is slightly farther afield than the other requests, but a print on demand fulfillment service like the basics of Fine Art America or SmugMug would allow both me and Google to generate some revenue, without forcing me to try to push people outside G+.

B.  Community
Since I can’t present my photography properly or sell it, I must be staying for the social interaction – for me, the best and most unexpected benefit of being on G+.  There are a number of steps Google should take to facilitate that social interaction and to avoid inhibiting it.

Request 5:  Who Added Me?
5a.  The notification when people add me should lead to a complete list of all of them (as it used to a long time ago).  What’s more basic than that?
5b.  The notification when people add me should be a single item rather than two.  Why do I get two different kinds now, the one in the main list and the one down below of “other notifications” (my settings have always said notify me of everyone).
5c.  Notification emails should likewise include everyone who has added me.  One email a day would be fine, or whatever algorithm you used to use to decide how to bundle people was okay.

Request 6:  Who Tried to Interact with Me?
6a.  Show everyone who has plused, reshared or commented on my post, not just the “most relevant” 50.  Again, seems pretty elementary.  I appreciate every one, and it’s an important way of discovering new people.
6b.  Show all such activity in chronological order, so I can find the activity I haven’t seen yet.
6c.  A little farther afield: show me summaries or allow me to download raw data to find out, for example, who has plused how many of my last n posts or other similar metrics, to allow me to create/discover my own list of “engagers.”
6d.  Add detail to notifications, to enable me to see all the people who plused a post, and which posts (the “so-and-so plused many of your posts” notification is unhelpful; I end up having to open all of those posts to see what they were looking at).

Request 7: Who Have I Tried to Interact with?
7a.  Fix the “plus one bug”!  I don’t care so much that I can’t see how many people have plused my own posts, but it really costs me time and nuisance in going through my Circle Streams to try to see other people’s work.  Since I can’t see my own pluses on other people’s posts, unless an image was very memorable, I often can’t tell if I’ve already seen it or not, or where I am in a stream’s timeline.  It’s also time consuming as a theme curator and Community moderator when I can’t quickly determine which posts I’ve already seen.
7b.  When I go to a Circle Stream, show me every post, in reverse chronological order, by members of that Circle.  I always thought that was how it’s supposed to work, and I’ve even had Google employees tell me so, but now there are many, many posts missing when I do that.  There has to be a way to see what people are posting without going to every single Profile.
7c.  Fix hashtag search.  Why can’t Google make that work again?  When I search a hashtag, I want to see all posts using that hashtag, in reverse chronological order.  If you must have the “best of” as an option, fine, but I’m usually searching as a theme curator, and I want that day’s or week’s posts.  Now I get a few recent ones and then random junk from months ago that may or may not even include the tag.  Many people’s theme contributions are missed because they trust in hashtags and don’t directly notify curators or a theme Page.

Request 8: Improve My Control over what I See.
8a.  Allow me to filter posts by content type.  I would choose to block all GIFs, autoawesome, Stories, YouTube clips, Circle shares, Event posts...  Of course other people could make other choices.
8b.  Fix Event notifications.  Why do I receive endless notifications for Events I’ve never even viewed, much less replied to in any way?  I should never receive anything from an Event unless I’ve accepted an invitation to it.
8c.  End the plus-one spam, where something appears in my stream only because someone in my circles has plused it.  The positive yield for those is horrendously low.
8d.  I’ll understand if Google has to do what it can with the main stream for its own purposes, but I’d like to have much more granular control over the probabilities that material from different circles or communities will show up there.  If not, I’ll end up further abandoning it for Circle Streams (especially if they stop losing posts).
8e.  If I search within G+ from the photo albums view, I want to search for posts (not for images).

Request 9: Improve the Playing Field.
I don’t have as precise a request here, and I don’t want to rehash many lengthy conversations that have already been held, but my concern here is the theft of copyrighted images by G+ profiles presenting them as their own work.  While I understand that Google cannot accept a role as censor, Google could certainly be as quick as other social networks to address DMCA takedown requests and to block accounts of repeat violators.  There may also be dials behind the scenes that you could readily turn to somewhat disfavor stolen content relative to original work – but of course that may conflict with your engagement and advertising numbers.  I just want to be clear that when popular sharers of stolen images are rewarded with attention, it has a corrupting effect on the community and creates one more disincentive to share original art.

C.  Google’s Role
I understand that Google itself chooses to stay mostly out of the stream of conversation; that you don’t want to offer information about features or changes before they’re released; and that I’m not your customer.  But I think you do need to show some respect for the fact that your most active users, who spend hours on the service and help generate lots of interaction, are designing their G+ presence in many respects to work with the system.  When the system changes abruptly, it causes dislocations that can cost people many hours as they modify their behavior or repair their tools.

Request 10: Publicly Document Major Feature Changes.  Create an official Google presence, however minimal, that at least informs people when significant changes are made, and answer basic questions about the changes.  This would at least help people stop wasting their time just to figure out and define what actually happened.

Request 11: Publicly Acknowledge Top Known Bugs.  Create an official Google presence, however minimal, that at least informs people when you’re willing to acknowledge an issue and whether or not you intend to address it.  When things go wrong, there’s a massive amount of preventable scurrying.  I just saw clear acknowledgement on a recent post that you’re aware of the “plus one bug” and working on it.  Whether that took months to come out or whether the response was scattered on individual posts rather than being in a place that everyone can find, it would be much more helpful if it came from a single account that people would know to check.

Thanks, now and always, for listening, and I hope we can set G+ on a better course again.___Excellent post by +Alex Lapidus - thanks Alex.

The Last Summer Holiday Weekend

It's a long weekend here and the weather is beginning to get much cooler at night. For many this weekend will mark the official end of their summer fun on the beach. I took this photo as I started out on my walk along the shore.  As I came back at the end of my walk, it had begun to pour with rain and as I got closer to where they had been playing, I saw these children all huddled under a huge beach umbrella. They didn't seem at all put out by the downpour, but were giggling and laughing under their shelter in their bright clothes making a splash of colour against the grey stones and sand. They had the sun in their hearts and that was all that mattered.

Enjoy your weekend, however you spend it.

I'm not normally a fan of free 'improve your photography' eBooks, but here's one where I was actually asked to contribute to, along with lots of other working photographers.

As ever, I'd expect more experienced photographers to say that it's obvious stuff, but the point is it wasn't always so, for all of us ;-)___Sounds worth the read. Thanks +Keith Cooper

My First Long Exposure - Atlantic Coast, Nova Scotia

On Monday we had a wonderful day out with G+ friends Alex and Linda who were visiting our Province. We took them to some of our favourite places on the Atlantic Coast and finally I was able to do a long exposure photograph. This is something that I've been wanting to do for over a year - since I was studying landscape photography in a mentorship by +Sairam Sundaresan. To get the effect I was after, I needed to go to a place where there are waves and movement of water. +Linda Villers will tell you that our waves are pathetic by the standards of those who live on the Pacific coast (and they're pretty measly in comparison to those on the coast of the North Sea, too, I have to admit). But they are the closest things to moving water that I could find. And so, with the help of +Steven Kennard and +Alex Lapidus (thanks a lot, both o... more »

And so, with the help of +Steven Kennard and +Alex Lapidus (thanks a lot, both of you) I got my tripod and camera set up, filter in place and finally achieved my goal. The cormorants on the rock were most obliging and obviously barely moved during the exposure.

So here is my first long exposure photograph. I hope to get others some day, but I might have to move closer to some 'real' waves to get them!

Happy Feet

There are reasons to believe that having bare feet on the ground (earth, sand grass etc.) without any man made substance to come between is an important way to become 'grounded' and to disperse the electrical energy that we are absorbing all day from the appliances and gadgets and wiring that surround us even when we don't see them. I know that after walking on the beach, with our bare feet getting sandy, muddy or wet from the salt water, we all feel refreshed and energized, even sleeping better. For that reason I tend to believe that this recommendation is worth following whenever we can.

I have to say that I also liked some of the other comments which would have made an excellent title, such as "6 feet, not quite under' by +John Ashton.

These were, indeed, happy feet, feet belonging to friends on a walk on the beach which has some areas of lovely reddish sand. The fourth set of happy feet which are missing from the scene are the four belonging to Joni, our dog, as she was, no doubt, running along the shore with her ball in her mouth at the time this was taken.___

Beach Home for Sale. Great View of the Bay

(if at times a bit close for comfort)

The red cliffs along the bay of the Minas Basin, off the Bay of Fundy are constantly being whittled away by the relentless daily tides and the wind and weather. Many of the residents whose cottages are perilously close to the cliff edge have paid huge sums of money to have rocks and even giant boulders piled at the base of their properties in an attempt to slow the steady erosion of their land.

The interesting results of this natural sculpturing are rock formations and caves that have been carved out as if by troglodyte builders, preparing dwellings for miniature people to inhabit. Possibly they do, but I doubt that many venture very far along this beach to discover these tidal caves.

Supermoon,  August 10, 2014

Sometimes you can't go anywhere special to take a photograph. Sometimes the subject comes to you. Or is everywhere (almost). Barring cloudy skies, the supermoon was there for us all. And it almost didn't matter where you were to photograph it, because as long as you could get it in your viewfinder, the foreground was almost irrelevant. I wanted in this case, though, to include the soft pinky clouds that were under it as it rose, as well as the trees, giving some context to where I was when I took it. Anyone can take a photograph of the moon, many with far longer lenses than I. But only I took it from the field behind our house and the trees make this unique to me. I was pleased with the details in the moon, as well.

This supermoon was the closest to the earth this year, at its apogee, so looked the largest.

Least Sandpipers, Kingsport Beach, NS

As we were walking on the beach for the past few days, we have watched many small flocks of these little shorebirds as they foraged for food or swooped and dipped over the water. When in the air they keep a tight formation, wheeling and banking so that at times the flash of the underside of their wings makes them invisible against the water behind them. I hope I have identified them correctly, but will change the title if someone lets me know otherwise. They are approachable, not being frightened particularly, except with the ball or dog lands in their midst.

This was the photograph I got of them yesterday. I owe it, in part, to Linda who walked with me and Joni (and waded with us through the incoming tide that caught us unawares) as, when I hesitated as to whether to bring my camera or not, she said "you always take your camera... more »

And I had chosen the right lens, for once.

Love of the Common People - Paul Young

I love Paul Young's version of this song. Hope you enjoy it.

It would fall through the hole in your pocket and you'd lose it
In the snow on the ground..."_  (written by by  John Hurley, Ronnie. Wilkins.

I've been missing Paul Young but now am hearing all the old favourites thanks to  #googleplaymusicallaccess

More Beach Fun - Joni at 8 Months Old

Okay, here is a photograph very similar to one I posted a while ago of Joni playing on the beach, waiting for the ball.  It seems that this is a standard pose. She just loves the water and will go in it whenever we get near it, running in and out, with or without her ball and whether we go in it or not. She will drop the ball into the water and retrieve it, making a game of it.

My friend +Ursula Klepper asked if people swam off the Kingsport beach and the answer to that is yes, they do. It can be a long walk to get to water at low tide, depending on how low it is. And some of the places along the shore are better than others. The water is not particularly cold, certainly not at this time of year, and when it is coming in at high tide then as it washes over the warm sand/mud it is very pleasant.  The other side of the province, theAt... more »

I would not dream of going swimming in it, having tried the wading bit once. That was enough for me. Steven swam in it and survived, but was rather blue when he got out. And he has lost a lot of weight since then so I am not sure that he would be able to stay in it long now. I'm sure if we took Joni there she would go in anyway. She doesn't mind the cold of winter, so I'm sure a bit of cold water would be no big deal.

Legs Heavy with Pollen

This bee looks almost as if he is wearing jodhpurs, his leg sacks are so packed with pollen. If you look at the centres of the flowers, you see the ones that he has stripped as they are almost white. The ones waiting for his visit are the same golden colour as he is carrying on his legs.

Check out the Wednesday Photo Themes in the New Document Format

For example, see what the mysterious #WordlessonWednesday  theme is all about and why the poster doesn't respond to comments for 24 hours....

Want to post to themes? Not sure of the curators? These documents give you text and numbers that you can copy and paste to be sure that you have it as up to date as I can make it (and as the curators inform me). Go to the About page on the +Public Calendar of Daily Photography Themes and see links to each of these documents. Have them linked into your own Drive (don't copy, just have them shared, that way they stay up to date).  Easy Peasy. :D

Enjoy
And thanks to +Janice Hackney who came up with the brilliant idea of converting these to documents (these are all linked within the calendar, of course.)

Wednesday Themes

The themes are now on publicly accessible documents, including this one, for Wednesday themes.

Including the #wordlessonwednesday  - in the words of +Jason Jakober
"Wordless on Wednesday ~ #WordlessOnWednesday
The idea is to post an image without any words, title or description about it.  Just let the image speak for itself, let the viewer come up with his own ideas about the shot and they can mention them in the comments.

No Titles
No Descriptions
No Reply Comments for 24 hours from the poster
Just add the tag #WordlessOnWednesday (only one tag, no themes  just post whatever you want and we will do the rest)

Post your photo and sit back and let the viewer take it all in and interpret it the way they see it, how they feel it. Give it a shot, I think you just might enjoy the freedom and then you can spend your time checking out everyone else's images :-)"

Lone Aviator Over Kingsport Beach

Everyone was happily playing on the beach, fishing, swimming or wading when we walked along with Joni. The drone of this little bi-plane didn't even really break the peacefulness of the scene, in fact it almost seemed to intensify it. This typical summer Sunday beach afternoon on a hot August day could easily have looked very similar back in the 1920's

Kingsport Beach at Evening - One Man and His Dog

We have spent a lot of evenings walking on Kingsport beach, which is a not far from us. Joni loves the freedom, loves the games of ball thrown all the way down the shore and into the water.  These two look so alone against this Eastern sky at the blue hour.

I am taking photographs of +Steven Kennard in his leisure time, for a slideshow being prepared of him by a Canadian magazine. This is one I took for that project.

Stone and Sand and Sea and Sky

This was a wonderfully tranquil evening for a walk along the beach. The mauve clouds and mist blended perfectly into the reflection on the calm water of the bay.

It reminds me of this beautiful poem set to music by Rose Vaughn, sung here by Rosemary Phelan and Jason LaPrade - Stone and Sand and Sea and Sky

Throw the Ball! Throw the Ball!

Is there anything more fun than playing on the beach when there is a ball with a chuck-it launcher involved and you are an almost 8 month old Border Collie? I would say not. Even though it does involve getting a mouth full of sand and a coat full of mud. Because there is always the water to jump into again to get you clean and cool. As you see, she has to sit before the ball is thrown for her. For some reason she has combined the command to sit with the one to get her to drop the ball. If she is reluctant to let it go, all you have to do is ask her to sit and she drops it and gets ready for the next throw. Then she runs like the wind after it, into the water, or along the shore. She streaks back towards us, but then does a little victory lap around to celebrate her retrieval and the joy of living.

She streaks back towards us, but then does a little victory lap around to celebrate her retrieval and the joy of living.

Joni will be 8 months old next week. She loves the beach more than anything, although as we live where the tides are the highest in the world, this needs careful planning and the use of a tide app to predict the water levels. At the highest point you can't access the beach. At the lowest you can have a long walk (30 minutes) through mud to get to the water. About 2 hours before high tide is a sweet spot, where the majority of the beach is sandy and the water is warm as it is washing in over the warm sand. But we have to keep an eye on the water level and not forget that there are places along this long stretch of beach where the inlets will fill faster. There are ladders up to the top of the cliff, but I don't fancy my chances on them. I'm sure Joni would manage just fine as she swims well and loves the water.

I must remember to tell you the story of the lost ball and share the photograph that I took to go with it. (It will be for the next time.) Meanwhile, have a great weekend and enjoy your furry friends.

Spider in her Larder

This year for the first time I have noticed these spiders on this peony plant. There have been several of them, distinctive with their red strips and white, almost translucent bodies. They are mostly to be found on the flowers like this that are white, with splashes or edges of red or pink. It's not a bad camouflage, though it makes them elusive models. The bug you see on the right is dead. From what I could see, the spider lay in wait for bugs that passed by all unawares, then she would kill them. She then stashed them between the petals of the peony. It is as if she was storing them in her food locker or larder.

I did make some macro photographs of this little lady, one of which I might share later.

Shanti Tea ( +Shanti Tea ) is asking what we might suggest as a new flavour for their organic iced tea powders. We are thinking that Iced Lapsang Suchong would be an amazing drink. Drinking it would give you a feeling as if you were on a boat, with the smell of the tarry ropes and a cool drink in your hand. To send in the suggestion and maybe win a tin of the winning iced tea choice, they wanted you to share on FB or Twitter with the hashtag #amazingicedtea . So I wrote and asked them about G+. Lobster Boat Collecting Traps at Sunset on the Bay of Fundy

Last weekend we were with our friends sitting on the shore of the Bay. We watched one lone lobster boat make its way across the scene in front of the setting sun, picking up its traps as it went. The bright white and blue lights on the little boat seemed to glow brighter as the scene got darker. I was reminded of a scene that my Finnish friend +Mari Luukkonen had posted the day or so before. It doesn't matter where we are in the world, such scenes speak to all of us.

Have a lovely, peaceful weekend, all!

Why Drink Organic Coffee?

As it is #coffeethursday curated by my friends +Stuart Dyckhoff +Jason Kowing +Maki Silberberg and +Sairam Sundaresan I thought I would post an interesting article explaining why it is important to drink organic coffee for our health as well as for the environment.

We love special coffees (though not the awful flavoured ones that seem so popular around here) and have two or three organic coffee (fair trade) outlets here, including one of the actual roasters and pioneer of Fair Trade practices. They will also feature speciality from small individual farms. You can even learn about the families who grow it.

Not a Dandelion (and 'Civilization' Fights Back)-146/365

I have been watching these plants with their seed heads for some time, as they were along the side of one of the paths that Joni and I take on our walks. My friend Linda and I walked it together a week or so ago and she told me that she has also been curious as to what they are.

She said that the flowers only open for a very brief period early in the morning (which was why I had never observed that ;-) ). She also said that most of the heads simply shut up and die. Only a very few turn into these large and intricate seed heads which are very similar to dandelions. But these are much larger, about 3" across. And the stems they are on are between 2 and 3 feet high. I have no idea what they are, but I am really glad that I photographed this specimen as the other day an over enthusiastic village worker went... more »

I have no idea what they are, but I am really glad that I photographed this specimen as the other day an over enthusiastic village worker went through and mowed down all of the wild flowers and grasses next to the path, including these. So they are all gone.

'Civilization' Fights Back

The field that I photographed the other day (https://plus.google.com/105804664540125819976/posts/fd6X1K1A4ZA) has also been mown completely flat. All of the wild roses, all of the lupins, all of the tiny wild strawberry plants, the milkweed flowers  - monarch butterfly nurseries - as well as the wild blackberries have all been cut down and destroyed. I guess the village was threatened by all of this natural beauty. I could have cried. I am only glad that I caught it with my camera before this happened.

Ladybug Love / Ladybird Love

On the same walk with my friend Linda, she (without her camera) spotted this preoccupied pair. I wonder where that spider's web is leading, too, but think that it would have to be a brave spider to interrupt these two. I was particularly intrigued by the 'eye' spots.

Excellent Video Series Reduced to a Great Price

From +Craft & Vision I have purchased this amazing series of videos (over 14 hours) full of inspiring content. In case any are interested in purchasing, just go to the link. No need for a discount code. It is usually $80 and now is just $20 for them all. The quality of the material and the videos themselves is excellent and although I have only watched just one of the 10 separate videos at this point, I already feel that I have had way more than $20 of inspiration and thought provoking content.

+David duChemin, for those who don't know him, is a photographer with down to earth practical advice and a way to help you recognise your own potential and discover your vision. I have several of his books which I love and so I knew the videos would be worth having.

Arthur's Visit to Nova Scotia-146/365

That's tropical storm Arthur, in case you wondered...

For those who are wondering what the destruction was like and why it took so long for power to be restored to so many customers in the Maritimes, I thought I should post this picture. (Again, out of order, but who cares? Not me.) There were many downed power lines and phone lines caused by the huge number of trees that fell. This translated into a loss of electricity for up to 5 days (see +Steven Kennard's post here https://plus.google.com/104584322313471697637/posts/AnJXk24VAnh for exactly what that means in this region). A good friend of ours even put his back out badly hauling water for his family from a nearby stream. A good friend of ours even put his back out badly hauling water for his family from a nearby stream. Roads were blocked by fallen trees and the loss of telephone land-lines put at risk those people who have no mobile/cell phone coverage in their area (quite a lot near us) and the elderly or those who choose not to have such phones but might have been in need of medical attention.

Power and the phones were restored, but in seemingly random ways. One family had the electricity restored to their house but not to the one next door. So they ran an extension cable to 'lend' electricity during the outage. Our neighbour called to offer to share his generator with us, if we needed it, to keep our fridge and freezer from thawing. People helped each other and got on with life as best they could. Now comes the cleanup. _Oh, and don't touch the red wire! ;-) This was taken the night of the storm when there was a lull.

Earth's Restorative Powers-145/365

I was walking at the edge of this field a couple of weeks ago when this rich array of wildflowers drew me to walk right into the middle of it. There were lupins of white, purple, blue and pink, white and red wild roses, and so many more flowers that I couldn't name. All of these were crawling with beautifully marked spiders, insects, tiny butterflies and bees. Now and again, underfoot, there was a crumbling bit of concrete which was the only evidence that a school, complete with large parking lot had stood there only a few short years ago.  It reminded me of the poem by Shelley, "Ozymandias" which has the line "Look on my works ye mighty and despair". (link to the poem below for those who don't know it).

The earth has such wonderful restorative powers that it quickly produces great beauty and fruitfulness in places formerly occupied by dull, ugly and heavy concrete structures. Such healing of the scars left here really touched me.

This is for my friend Levy, who tells me that she reads all of my posts and loves them, though she is not on G+ herself. Thank you for that, Levy. This is for you.

Breaking the Fall-144/365

I have got myself into a downward spiral of not publishing my photos. They might not seem 'good enough' or it might be that I don't want to show one more floral image, or I might be too tired (most frequent) or it might be too late. Whatever the reason, I knew I had to break the cycle and just upload and share. This peony, one of my favourite flowers, was resting on the path, so splendid in its unfurling pinkness, so sweet in its wonderful perfume, it too easily might have been trodden underfoot. It's just as lovely as those standing proud above it. So (for my friend Joyce) here it is. :D
