Big Android BBQ7,736The 2015 Meat & Greet will take place on the Cherry Blossom paddle boat embarking from Alexandria, Virginia. We will begin the evening with a delicious, smoked BABBQ-style dinner prepared by our pit-master Ray Walters afterwards we will depart from the USPTO via chartered buses to the Alexandria waterfront. The 3-hour cruise will tour up the Potomac River from Historic Old Town Alexandria, to the DC Tidal Basin and back (3 hour charter). The BAMG is a perfect opportunity to network with fellow DC developers as well as our sponsors. Find a new partner for that next project you want to tackle, or land that new job you’ve been looking for -- or just relax and enjoy the ride, view of the Cherry Blossoms. The return trip will be capped off with an evening fireworks display (weather-permitting). A full, open bar and light snacks will be included in the cost of your reasonably priced ticket.BAMG Cherry Blossom Riverboat Cruise2015-04-04 16:00:0045

Can't say I disagree. F-35 is a monumental dog of an aircraft, and we should very much be worried about its consequences on our air power (and other countries that are relying on it) in the global theater. And I'm against a huge military spend, but airpower is such an excellent deterrent that it should really be a well funded branch of military.

Now that I'm a day into my 34th trip around that ball of burning gas called the sun, I can share what I've learned in my travels:

- make friends. They can be a huge pain in the ass, but 60% of the time it's worth it every time.
- The less fucks you give now, the more you'll have later when you actually need them.
- Don't pet things that can kill you. Doesn't matter how cute they look.
- If you love doing something, do it for money. It's hard to beat having fun at your job (also WillowTree is hiring, hit me up if you're interested in working in Charlottesville, VA or Raleigh, NC.)
- Do things that aren't your usual. You'd be surprised what you could get into.
- Don't be a douche. Ever.
- Look out for yourself first. It's easier to deal with everyone else when you have yourself figured out.

- Take a few minutes every day to realize that life is actually pretty-not-bad in the grand scheme of things.
- Periodically ask folks if you're being dumb. It's good to catch yourself being an ass before it becomes a problem.
- Don't drink shitty alcohol. Life's too short to waste of bad drinks.
- Write dumb lists every once in a while. It feels good.
- Be cool to one another. We're all in this for the long haul, no point in making other people's journeys worse for no good reason. ___

In lesser-followed news, the device admin policies are getting an update in Android 'M' to support some additional features Google is adding for Android for Work.

My favorite is the pieces for Corporate-Owned, Single-Use devices. That's a really long-winded way of saying kiosk mode. Features to disable system elements like keyguard and status bar completely for device owner applications

We used to have to do custom builds of Android to do stuff like that ;)

When it comes to writing code, the number one most important skill is how to keep a tangle of features from collapsing under the weight of its own complexity. I've worked on large telecommunications systems, console games, blogging software, a bunch of personal tools, and very rarely is there some tricky data structure or algorithm that casts a looming shadow over everything else. But there's always lots of state to keep track of, rearranging of values, handling special cases, and carefully working out how all the pieces of a system interact. To a great extent the act of coding is one of organization. Refactoring. Simplifying. Figuring out how to remove extraneous manipulations here and there.

I spent some time digging around the internals of Android 'M' to try and uncover how the "doze" feature works. I compiled my notes on the subject and decided to post them. Hopefully others find them interesting as well!

Also, a note to other source divers: don't go looking for "doze" references in the framework. You will find a very different feature than what you were expecting :)
