The bad news is: this permission is disabled by default. Even worse, this permission cannot be requested by programmatically prompting a request dialog to the user, but must be explicitly enabled by navigating to the settings screen, selecting the app and triggering the switch; a bit like when you need to manage the Device Administrators (Android Wear, Device Manager, PushBullet, ..).

I think I'm actually okay with this... I used to like floating things for a short amount of time, but after needing to rearrange floating circles for the 5,000,000,000th time to actually use the app I wanted to be currently using, it can go die in a fire.

My favorite part of this:

Not a single living person knows how everything in your five-year-old MacBook actually works. Why do we tell you to turn it off and on again? Because we don't have the slightest clue what's wrong with it, and it's really easy to induce coma in computers and have their built-in team of automatic doctors try to figure it out for us. The only reason coders' computers work better than non-coders' computers is coders know computers are schizophrenic little children with auto-immune diseases and we don't beat them when they're bad.

You can generate your own codes here:
http://hrqr.org/
HRQR - Human Readable Quick Response Code
Project by Valentin Heun is a new QR barcode that is human-readable (in English) as well as machine-readable:
HRQR is a visual Machine Readable Quick Response Code that can replace usual barcode and QR Code applications. The code can be read by humans in the same way it can be read by machines. Instead of relaying on a computational error correction, the system allows a human to read the message and therefore is able to reinterpret errors in the visual image.

For anyone in cville or the surrounding area: September 9th is my last day in this beautiful city and we're having a going away thing at Jack Browns in downtown cville. If you're in the area and want to show up, feel free. Starts at 19:00 and there will be beer and shenanigans and more beer.

Also, it'll just be buckets of fun. Did I mention beer? And fun?

We need you

I get asked all the time if people can help out with the events we organize and the answer is always yes.  As a non-profit that operates thanks to volunteers generously giving their spare time we are consistently understaffed.  We're working on creating titles, job descriptions and a mechanism to facilitate applications and onboarding.  Unfortunately this also takes time and people to work on, something we have very little of.  To expedite growing our team in the short term I will personally be working through my social circles and direct contacts.

IDEAA is a 501c3 non profit and needs support from talented people to continue it's success.

Please comment on this post or message me directly if you would like to help. Experience is preferred but we will help you learn the role as best we can.  We have a lot of fun on our teams but also work veryhard... more »

IDEAA is a 501c3 non profit and needs support from talented people to continue it's success.

Please comment on this post or message me directly if you would like to help. Experience is preferred but we will help you learn the role as best we can.  We have a lot of fun on our teams but also work very hard.

Some of our most pressing needs are.
Communications: 1-2 creative writers to help with news updates and website content. 2 creative types that can help maintain our social networks.
Engineering: 2 Front end Web developers ((HTML5, CSS3, Javascript & JQuery, responsive design experience is a plus but not necessary)
Back end .NET/C Sharp developer - maintain and upgrade current .NET backend to support existing app plus requested enhancements. Experience with Azure portal a huge plus.
Go/AppEngine developer - convert existing .NET back end over to Go/App Engine and off Azure (.NET experience a plus with this one but probably not necessary)
Sponsorship: 2 sponsorship managers to contact and follow up with potential partners and sponsors. Sales and sponsorship experience would be a huge benefit. Industry contacts and knowledge is a must.
Events: 2 Assistant Project Managers to coordinate volunteer teams onsite at events and ensure proper communication flow between leaders and volunteers. Previous event volunteer management would be a big plus.
Creative: 1 Interior/Set Designer to focus on building memorable on-theme experiences for attendees in our event spaces.

There are some great benefits to working with IDEAA like travel, SWAG, experience and possible job opportunities! (several past volunteers have landed awesome jobs due in no small part to the experience working in this organization)

I look forward to meeting some awesome new people and working with a few friends I hope to see interested in helping. You can also email me Aaron (at) IDEAA (dot) io.___

You’d expect me to say this but Google’s transformation into Alphabet is a brilliant move that enables +Larry Page, +Sergey Brin and their company to escape the bonds of their past — They’re just a search company. Why are they working on self-driving cars and magical contact lenses and high-flying balloons? — and go where no one has thought they would go before.

To Wall Street and countless bleating analysts — not to mention its competitors and plenty of government regulators — Google was a search company, though long ago it became so much more. I don’t just mean that it also made a great browser, the best maps, killer email, an open phone operating system and some of the best phones, and a new operating system (and the damned fine computer I’m writing on right now) — and that it acquired the biggest video company and the best traffic data company. I don’t just mean that Google has for a long time really been the powerhouse advertising company.

No, Google long ago became a personal services company, the post-mass-market company that treats every user as a customer it knows individually. That is the heart of Google. When they say they “focus on the user and all else will follow,” they mean it.

But Google was also a technology company, working on projects that didn’t fit with that mission.

So this move lets Page and Brin move up to the strategic stratosphere where they are most comfortable. It lets them recognize the tremendous job +Sundar Pichai has been doing running the company that is now “just” Google. It lets them invest in new experiments and new lines of business — cars, medical technology, automated homes, and energy so far, and then WTF they can imagine and whatever problems they yearn to solve. It lets them tell Wall Street not to freak at a blip in the ad market — though, of course, the vast majority of the parent company’s revenue will still come from Google’s advertising business.

A journalist asked me a few minutes ago whether there was any risk to the change. I couldn’t think of any then. I suppose one risk is that this will only freak out especially European media and regulatory technopanickers, who will now go on a rampage warning that — SEE! — Google does want to rule the world. But what the hell. They were going to do that anyway.

A few weeks ago at Google I/O, I had the privilege of meeting Page. To introduce myself, I said that I wrote a book called What Would Google Do?. “Oh, I remember,” he said with impish grin and then he asked: “What would Google do? I want to know.”

See, I don’t think even Larry Page knows what Google — er, Alphabet — will do. He is now setting himself up for discoveries, surprises, exploration, experimentation, and a magnificently uncertain future. Who wants a certain future? That’d be so damned boring. So horribly conventional.

Disclosure: I own Google — er, Alphabet — stock. And I now lust after Alphabet swag.___
