Hey, G+, long time no see.
Trying to find a speech this guy did about Internet flashmobs...he accumulated a few incidents and morphed them together into one big story, did it at some sort of stand-up event. It's a few years old now. Does anyone know which one I mean? Even better, a link for it?

Chaosium breaks the sad news that Lynn Willis passed away today.
He played a key role in the refinement and balance of the Basic Roleplaying system, which makes him one of the crucial designers of RuneQuest and Call of Cthulhu, as well as the other lesser lights driven by BRP. He also co-designed the Ghostbusters RPG, which is the second-best licensed RPG ever created, and incidentally provided the die pool architecture for Shadowrun and for the White Wolf Storyteller engine.
He also played a key role as shepherd and guardian of Call of Cthulhu for its first twenty years. My personal favorite edition of the game, the Fifth, is his final statement on what the game should contain, and contains probably more Lynn Willis text than it does Sandy Petersen text; Lynn's text amplifies and illuminates Sandy's brilliant core while leaving... more »

Any Scrivener users out there who can help with the following?...
Tried to run a game on last night and it crashed the computer. Turned the PC back on today and Scrivener won't let me open my current project. Can't restore from backup as I keep getting an error message (see pic).
Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Increasingly clear: not only does Romney have no shame about lying, he has no shame, period. Take a look at The Smirk, too, captured as he left this despicable statement to reporters -- the context makes the smirk just vile:

Guys, have you ever wanted to be on the crew of a starship?
Wait, stupid question. EVERYONE has.
Well, did you know there's a game that lets you do it? I grabbed +Annie Gaus, +Roger Chang, Esther Inglis-Arkell, +nate bolt, and +Jon Sung and we tried to defend a quadrant with a battle cruiser.
Spoilers: I am the worst captain ever.

Just happened upon the following in Klaus Kinski's autobiography. Sometimes I forget how funny it is.
"Claudia and I have a week off. But I can't fuck her during that week because her husband is visiting, and she has to let him fuck her."
Kinski is my all-time favourite sociopath.

Can anyone recommend a good electrician in Norwich? Boring, I know, sorry. Once I get the electrician to sort out a phone line in this office I'll be BIB! (new acronym for 'back in business' I'm hoping will catch on).

Someone just pointed this out to me...forgive me if there's something I've missed but it seems to make sense.
Two terrorists want to cook something up, but they don't want to leave a trail that can be picked up by the methods outlined in the new snooper's charter. How can they communicate without their emails being intercepted?
Quite easily, when you think about it. Terrorist A opens a Gmail account. He writes an email, but instead of sending it, he simply saves it in the 'Drafts' folder.
Terrorist B then signs into that same account, reads the email, writes a reply and saves THAT to the drafts folder.
And so on.
This is just one workaround, but doesn't it alone render the law obsolete as far as terrorism is concerned? And with that aspect removed, doesn't it mean that the snooper's charter is useless except in... more »

This is just amazing. A John Cleese talk on creativity that is hugely inspiring and completely practical. A lot of people doing online comedy could do with carefully watching and re-watching the section on originality.

Warning: If you don't like RPGs, indeed, if you don't know what RPG stands for, you will have no interest in the following.
I have to say, the more I read of 'Trail of Cthulhu', the more I like the sound of it. I love 'Call of Cthulhu', but I REALLY like how the storytelling is shared amongst the players in 'Trail'. Plus, the scenarios are thinned down and don't seem to need a buttload of preparation as is the case with 'Call'.
If I had one criticism, it's that the rulebook is written in a somewhat counter-intuitive way, with a player's guide at the front. Even though the game is more of a story game than an old-fashioned RPG--or at least, it resides at a point exactly between the two--it still threw me that the rules pitch to the player first, giving their stats etc when they haven't given you any idea of what those stats... more »

Feel like it was either New Yorker or New York Times...

I have been negligent in posting my compilations on Google+--not good considering the comments on G+ have been really useful in sourcing non-Spotify links for the artists.
So, working backwards...

Did you know that there are people out there who think The Artist shouldn't have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay because it's a silent film? Seriously! They think the story, characters, themes, mood etc were communicated to the actors, crew, backers...I dunno, maybe through mime?
Anyway, here's the script of The Artist. Most of you will read it with pleasure, but this is mainly for the benefit of the very slowest in our society, who will presumably be stupefied by it.

Reminder, tomorrow's Sun on Sunday employs Toby Young as a columnist. Does Rupert Murdoch think this kind of flippancy is appropriate? Does he too think the Guardian story is "balls"? What happened to "the most humble day of my life"? Given this new line his paper is taking, does he now perhaps expect the Dowler family to apologise to him?

Background on the "Don't be evil" bookmarklet.
If this does one thing, it demonstrates that the "we don't have data to integrate other services" statement from Google was utter nonsense. All they need to do it use the data they have. And no algorithms were harmed in the creation of this hack.

Every time Rupert Murdoch tries to tweet like a normal person, I think of the boss in 'Broadcast News' who is firing the staff and says to one guy "If there's anything we can do for you, let us know".
And the guy he's firing cheerfully says "Well, I certainly hope you die soon."

Can anyone help on an itunes (yuck) question?
I just restored my old ipod and connected it to my PC, where all my music now lives, but it won't sync. It appears to think it HAS synced however, but it's not downloading any music onto the device.
Anyone got an idea? I've Googled the shit out of this but to no avail.
And I have tried turning it off and on again.

One of those great nights on t'Internet. First I found Stefon
http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/3b466d2cea/stefon-snl-weekend-update
...which led me to this fascinating interview...
http://goo.gl/ld9ho
(which incidentally only worked when I used Tunnelbear http://www.tunnelbear.com/)
I recognised the co-writer of Stefon from somewhere--it was driving me nuts--so I went to the Wikipedia page and found out that he's John Mulaney, who starred in this utterly brilliant thing that I'm obsessed with but can never usually find
http://vimeo.com/7118220
AND IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH, I noticed he had an album, so I checked if it was on SPOTIFY AND IT WAS!
AND IT'S HILARIOUS (one track in)

My wife is trying to help out at with a parents committee at my kids' school and she is suddenly being buried by emails, or, worse, she is having to send them out. I think the email/CC-ing system is leading to a lot of stress and misunderstandings, and I'm really anxious to find some 2.0 alternative. What I think she needs is some sort of website where people can visit and add comments etc etc, and people can be targeted in more specific ways.
(So, you know, if there's a notification about ballet classes, only the people interested in ballet classes need to see it, rather than everyone being CCd.)
Other requirements:
It needs to be super-simple, so that even the most technologically-averse parent can use it. I think even a password is more effort than some people are willing to put into it.
It needs to be attractive, fun to use, non-threatening.
It could be... more »
