This is +Zack Blackerby. A couple years ago I met Zack by chance outside the Packard Plant during a raging fire. We've been pals ever since, exploring together whenever I'm back in #Detroit . He's a good guy and an epic #urbex documentarian, very knowledgeable of history and architecture and willing to do pretty much anything to get in and get a shot. He once spent a couple nights in jail for trespassing, but is quick to point out he's been cleared of any and all charges! ;) Thanks for all the adventures, Zack!

Have you ever wondered how to get your photos picked up by ad agencies? How does a photographer get their foot in the door? These are questions many of us have thought about before, since photography (and ads) are everywhere we look.
Well, SmugMug Pro +Alan Shapiro helped answer some of those question during a recent SmugMug podcast (bit.ly/ZsDwsb). But, we found, that the interest in this subject is off the charts, and the follow up questions for Alan have been coming in fast and furious. So Alan has volunteered to spend an hour answering nothing but your questions in a live, On Air Google Hangout!
Join SmugMug's Rocky Bowels and Michael Bonocore as they ask your questions to Alan Tuesday, June 11th at 9:00PM EST.
Have a question you would like us to ask Alan? Simply add it as a comment here, on this event. Alan will also do his best to respond to any questions we do n... more »

Suggestions WANTED: Where would you recommend I bring a European who's never seen America's beautiful countryside?
Next month The Dutchman is coming to Detroit, and we're taking off on a great big American Road Trip! We'll be hitting up the Southwest USA along with a few other classic sights. Can't wait!

It seemed to hang there, floating, as if suspended on water, but that wasn't so, for in reality it was undergirded by solid firmament and rooted deeply into the connective matter of the planet.
We doubt ourselves, uncertain of our abilities, derailed by our fears, and held up by our anxieties, but if only we could recognize that we are undergirded by awesomeness, rooted into the deep, broad, and unending possibilities of creative wonders, problems solving, building and discovering, forgiving and restoring, dancing and shouting, moving and breathing, that we inherited at birth, and shall be existing in until our last breath.
Perceptions are powerful, realities more so.
We are all invited to discover the wonders that are, and shape those that are yet to be.

The Bay of Emeralds ... Lake Tahoe, California
I love a good story - and swoon over good "photo presentation". I muse about this on my blog today: http://goo.gl/D3bJF, and show a before/after of what I mean.
It must be my performer background, but I just always seek the best way to make my point with a photo and tell the best story I know how to about what I saw that day. You know a great performance when you see one... the dancer/singer/skater/whatever puts their final stamp on the last note/move/landing and sends their intent soaring out beyond the finish. They've given their all - including that "extra something" all their own.
So I always think about how I'm 'presenting' a photo. It's like when I give a gift to a friend... and I want them to light up a little when I hand it to them. I'm probably not going to just hand it ... more »

Makapu'u Beach Milky Way
Tonight, +Cole Yamane and I headed to Makapu'u Beach to shoot some stars and see if it was clear enough for the Milky Way. It sure was, at least when we got there it was, but then the clouds came in and mist hazed up the cove. Glad we got there when we did. — at Makapu'u.

Great commercial! I'm so happy with the new Flickr. It's been great to explore and discover images within my own private collection (40K images) that I had forgotten about or overlooked in the previous tiny-square-thumbnail layout. What a difference!

Not long ago, I locked myself out of my car. It was right here, at Ice Box Canyon when I was out for a hike alone in the Mojave Desert. It ended up being one of the most beautiful rides of my life. Here's the full story: http://pict.ly/q6njc

Point Hamilton
Ahhh... the Great Ocean Road - easily one of my favorite places to explore while down in Oz. It represents so much of Australia - strong, beautiful, and teeming with nature. The reason why I am especially fond of this shot is because of how the mist rolled over those cliffs in the background, allowing just a hint of the Cape Otway lighthouse to show. Stylization was achieved by stacking what had to be 786 filters in Nik Color Efex 4. :)

A few nights ago I had a great Google hangout catching up with a South African friend. It was a voice-only hangout, as the internet connection in Cape Town is so spotty and weak, but we were able to talk for a few hours and it almost felt like I was sitting right beside my dear friend.
THANK YOU, +Google+, for everything you're doing to improve internet connectivity around the globe, especially in Africa, the most underserved continent in the world. By helping African locals get connected, you're also helping so many of us elsewhere in the world remain in close contact with our African loved ones! How can I repay you for the good you're doing, Google? Well, for starters, I'm sticking with Android. Just keep up the good work, Google! #googleforgood

Introducing Snapsation
Amongst the greatest human needs is the need to tell stories, to record memories, and to share our moments with the people who matter the most to us.
When you need an awesome dating profile picture, a business portrait, photos of your family reunion or milestone events. You need an amazing local photographer to help you to capture all of life’s moments.
As a local business you want to show off how amazing your restaurant is, the decor in your Bed and Breakfast, to show off your beautiful store or great new products, to record your industry happenings and events.
Finding a photographer is intimidating. And harder than it should be.
Photographers need customers. No matter how experienced a photographer is, there never seems to be enough time to focus on getting new customers. And for the many passionate and ta... more »

“I tend to think of the act of photographing, generally speaking, as an adventure. My favorite thing is to go where I’ve never been.” ~ Diane Arbus

I shot this while scouting locations for my upcoming Amsterdam At Night workshop. This was my final exposure before the rain became too heavy. We shot for five hours and I loved every minute of it!
RAW Exposure: f4.5 at 2.5 seconds, ISO 100
Post processing: Adjusted contrast, slight cross-processing, and subtle motion blur to the water.

On learning not to worry
Want a good method for learning not to worry? Try crossing Canada with a backpack and no firm timeline except "making it to Halifax by the fall".
Admittedly I wasn't the most worrysome fellow when I started this trip. I like ducks when they're in a row, but I'm also pretty used to them quacking off in all directions. And really that's more duckish anyways. Sure, taking the first step out the door took awhile to build up and happen, and there have been a number of 'OMG WTF AM I DOING?' moments behind the scenes. But they happen a little less frequently these days, and it seems that the worst ones were closer to the beginning.
Like the hours after the start of my trip in April in Victoria when my Dad asked me how was I going to afford to do it? where I'd make money? How I'd survive? And I didn't have an ... more »
