Rusty Ferguson54,564♥★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★Ripples of Love -- * Rebuild the Philippines *, V2 from +Rusty FergusonNew Version Updated: May 27, 2014★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★♥This is a circle that supports +Habitat for Humanity’s program to Rebuild the Philippines. To support this circle, you can share it or donate or both.Today was the first day of school in Tacloban. I learned that someone I’m very fond of that is in the second grade needs to bring a portable light to school!  They have no electricity so there are no fans either. Hard to ignore that and I don’t understand it but that tells us the need in the Philippines is still great. We can wait for the government to do it so we need to help as much as possible. These funds will not go to the government but to Habitat for Humanity who is building homes themselves. For some this will be a reminder. Please understand that A lot of people doing a little will have a huge impact. We are making ripples when we post on Google Plus, FaceBook, Twitter and other social media. Why not make those ripples mean something positive? When you make or share a post, those post spreads out across the Internet like tossing a rock into a pond. The Internet is an infinite pond, so our impact can also be as infinite as our zeal to support something worthwhile. What is a little? If only I could get more people to understand that $2.00 is enough if everyone participates we could easily build an entire home for a Filipino family as the cost is under $4500 to build an earthquake and super typhoon resistant home in the Philippines. A home much nicer than most Filipinos live in.If two dollars is all you can give than please give that. It’s enough! Some donated less than a dollar and that too is enough! Every drop expands the ripple.http://www.give2habitat.org/member/rustyf/haiyanHowever, I realize times can be hard. You may not have a dime tospare but you can still help. When you reshare this circle, others will see it.  Though you may not be able to contribute they may be able too. Or they may share it too. The ripple will grow.A week or so ago, I got an email from Habit for Humanity (HFH) requesting additional help for the victims of Typhoon Hiayan. Here is a portion of their email:♥★★★★★★★★★★★★Your commitment to help rebuild the lives of the families who were displaced by Super Typhoon Yolanda inspires me and my coworkers.  Because of you, Habitat has been able so far to repair 22,000 damaged homes and to start constructing the first 1,000 of the 30,000 houses it aims to construct for the Yolanda survivors.I'm writing to you right now -- exactly six months after the tragedy -- in behalf of the Yolanda survivors.  Most of the displaced families are still living in makeshift houses, tents, and evacuation centers. They are currently enduring a hot summer but soon it will be replaced by the country's often very wet season.  I urge you, therefore, to help us remind others about them.♥★★★★★★★★★★★★There was a PDF included that revealed this:♥★★★★★★★★★★★★It’s been six months since Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan), made its tragic landfall in the Philippines on November 8, 2014. Aside from the more than 8,000 Filipinos who died and are still missing, the typhoon affected…14 million FilipinosDestroyed or severely damaged more than a million homesWiped out or impaired millions of people’s livelihoods…And dreams. But there’s hope. You can support them by donating through >>>>> http://www.give2habitat.org/member/rustyf/haiyan(Additional options for donations b2014-06-02 12:07:07457161182152

If you're not sure and would like to know what others are saying, add this circle.  You'll be able to look at public posts from people that use Glass and people that purchased Glass and put it on the shelf while software was being developed. Pam Adger35,023This is my no drama circle. Great interaction, no drama. I picked people at random using the relevance filter...I stopped at 20 because 20 is a good number for a circle. Matt Gibson920,723Ok so we are going to try something different here...As you may have noticed, I am sharing a circle of really cool people and pages for you to add to your circles.  If you want cool content from cool people - add the circle!  It's that simple!  If YOU would like your profile to be shared to almost 1 million people, leave me a comment that tells me a little bit about YOU.  What do you like?  What is your favorite music?  Where do you live?  Let's get to know each other!  What are your social network or website addresses (simply posting a link without telling me about YOU won't make the cut btw)? Here is an example:Hi!  My name is +Matt Gibson and I am an independent artist working on my 1st album!  I like all forms of music but I tend to lean towards metal.  I play guitar, piano, drums and saxophone as well as sing!  You can check out my website at www.crimsonsymphony.com and you can subscribe to my +YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/crimsonsymphonymusicI like books by great authors like Tolkien, +TERRY BROOKS  and Raymond Feist among others.  I read a lot of non-fiction as well on subjects like business, marketing, antiques and tech.I am an amateur gardener and I aspire to own my own beehives.I like reading your posts because you are such a handsome fellow with that long wavy hair and manly beard and....ahem ok you can skip that part unless you really mean it LOL.Now that's not hard is it?  Tell me about yourself and get your profile shared to a million people!  Not a bad deal eh?New and OLD friends can participate but no cheating or dumb comments like "add me" or "hi".  You should all thank +Amanda Blain for giving me this idea to steal for our benefit btw... so let the fun and networking begin!!PS If your comment is really cool you may find yourself in the next Cool People circle and who knows, maybe we will become friends or colleagues? 2013-10-03 00:47:03249721243

There's juuuuust enough overexposed lighting and look of utter disinterest to qualify this as a genuine 90s alternative band album cover. Now all I need is a rainstorm in an alley that I can stand under while looking up, shaking my head with my arms out and stomping only my right foot (that's key), belting out lyrics in a self-loathing baritone.

It'd work for a grunge band if not for the fact that I've showered more than twice this month.

Tricks of the trade
What do you in a pinch when you're hosting a webcast for a big live event and your primary streaming server's TV tuner card gets fried right before you go on? You prop up your laptop with some programming books from your library, point a USB webcam at a PC monitor with a cable TV feed, run an Apple audio cable between the PC and your laptop, then start a Hangout On Air.

Duh.

Here's a case study excerpt from the book on developing wearable apps for +Google Glass that +Allen Firstenberg and I wrote - we interviewed +Takahiro Horikawa about his uber-cool image recognition work for Preview (https://glass.google.com/u/0/glassware/14547069768774444625). The Glassware scans movie posters, quickly figures out which film it is, and then plays back the trailer in your periphery.

It's really cool stuff...and the technical implementation driving the recognition feature might surprise (and will hopefully inspire) you. I beta-tested Preview for almost a year before it went public, and I still use it all the time when I'm strolling past the mall megaplex.

Does anyone have tips on how to force this?

I'll be shaving my head to raise money to battle kids cancer on Sunday the 19th, and I'll be donating to my colleagues, friends and total strangers who are doing the same. Please consider making a pledge to my St. Baldrick's page and let's all help these little heroes and their families through the fight of their lives.

On behalf of the kids - thank you very much! :)

I was surprised to see there isn't a repository that teaches people how to localize resource strings in wearable apps....so I wrote one. The app has a feature of universal importance: it checks your device's regional language settings and prompts you to politely ask a resident to point you to the nearest bathroom. Supported dialects are California Surfer and British Noble.

Knock yourself out.

Localizing resources with the GDK
I was surprised to see there isn't a public repository that teaches people how to localize strings in wearable apps....so I wrote one. This is a very simple project that demonstrates the GDK's support for displaying content based on the language preference set in MyGlass. This is the key - not geocoding the user's locale or inheriting the system language setting.

At the time of this writing, only "English (United States)" and "English (United Kingdom)" are available options. Toggling the language setting in MyGlass causes the app to display different content, localized for the user's country. Of note is that while MyGlass states that the UK language setting is "en-gb", the setting that works as the name for the resource folder is "en-rGB", so it's dependent on the regional qualifier. more »

I streamed this documentary on Hollywood's interpretation of Native people last night on Netflix. It's really good. I can empathize with that plight - having grown up being and being friends with a great mix of Pacific Islanders and seeing the differences but also the similarities we share...and how stereotypes have been blown way out of proportion when transposed to the Silver Screen.

Great watch.

SPOILER ALERT (possibly): keep this quote in mind, which could prove extremely poignant a couple of months from now, recalling that Kurt Sutter wrote the first season of +Sons of Anarchy as an allusion to Hamlet. I'm thinking to close the loop for this final season he could come back to Shakespeare...and have the series end the same way the play did.

I'm curious to see what solutions wearable developers have come up with for using third-party gaming engines in their projects. As far as physics engines, animation loops and multimedia asset management, are you massaging Unity or some other setup?

+Steven Mautone and his team at a 2013 hackathon used a neat solution in building Glass Frogger with a web stack to use the Glass browser and play the game remotely on an HTTP server, writing everything in HTML5, which makes possible JavaScript engines like ImpactJS and Three.js.

Or, are most people doing things the "roll it yourself" way and managing the canvas on your own?

Versioning/changelogs for GDK Glassware
One thing that I've always been persnickety about is reviewing changes in software that I use across different versions. As such, one thing I've been bullish on since the GDK went live has been the need for documenting changes in native Glassware, and giving users to ability to read those changes. I often see new features in my favorite Glassware show up magically...but since the GDK for the moment updates installed applications silently (which I love), we're unaware of any fixes, patches, or feature additions until we see and/or stumble across them.

Sure, we could use Android Debug Bridge commands and look inspect the APKs on our devices, but that's clearly an art too dark for the layman. Some vendors list ad hoc changelogs on their own web sites outside MyGlass, but that's not universally implemented.

I'd like some feedback from anyone that owns multiple smartwatches and runs both simultaneously, and is programming with the Android Wear SDK. I'm trying to see if anyone's done cool things with the Node API in order to not only see the number of connected devices synced across your personal network, but messed with clever filtering or conditional messaging between them, in addition to broadcasting to all en masse.

Once Glass supports Wear notifications, and hopefully this type of messaging, I'm keen on playing with such communications.

Android Wear, material design, and parallax backgrounds
One of the things I'm seeing with lots of people falling head-over-heels for the concepts proposed in material design (http://www.google.com/design/spec/material-design/introduction.html) is the use of the parallax effect in Android Wear when scrolling through cards in the context stream. It's a pleasant way to iterate through items in a collection, separating them not only by image or color, but by delivering the impact of true movement. But it's far from new, and you could easily implement it in your own designs.

It's a pleasant way to iterate through items in a collection, separating them not only by image or color, but by delivering the impact of true movement. But it's far from new, and you could easily implement it in your own designs.

Parallax treatment is a visual technique for 2D environments that's been in use for decades video games and filmmaking, which when applied creates a horizon effect by separating a background into multiple layers, each scrolling at a different pace, and when set against the foreground object creates the impression of depth. It's distantly related to the old "dolly zoom" camera trick of zooming out while physically moving the lens towards a subject: Jaws dolly zoom scene (Spike Lee also employed this effect during the introspection scene in X). Like anything, it's cool and valuable if used tastefully and sparingly.

At it's most simple, the foreground and background move at different paces, so you won't have the coupling between the two in 8-bit stages like Contra or Mega Man.

Here's also a cool implementation of parallax background for Android, for use with ViewPager objects: http://howrobotswork.wordpress.com/2014/05/09/parallaxviewpager-parallax-background-effect-for-the-viewpager/

So, if you're looking to add a richer visualization to your data that has a minimal effect, if any, on performance, the fundamental concept behind the effect is worth reading up on. It's stupidly easy to do across any platform and in any language once you understand the basic idea.___

An idea for a Glass-based audio EQ
Here's a fun thought experiment that I've been toying with: now that +Pandora's Glassware is gloriously available for all, I've been mulling over the possibility of building an audio equalizer for Glass as a GDK app to maximize my enjoyment of my stations. The audio quality is Glass is nice as-is, but I'd like more granular control, not just for volume.

There are scores of them available already for Android proper (https://play.google.com/store/search?q=equalizer), but I'm thinking something that works specifically for the Glass UX, not taking the lazy (and likely unusable) method of porting existing apps. See the Android API docs for EQ settings that I included for some inspiration.

See the Android API docs for EQ settings that I included for some inspiration.

The UI stage would optimally be a live card, since you'd want to be able to tweak audio presets and custom settings while audio-centric Glassware was running simultaneously, which is essentially what you'd expect from an EQ app on a smartphone or tablet. In theory, you could make on-demand changes while Pandora played to your liking side-by-side, then stop the EQ from running to conserve resources. This is opposed to an immersion-based UI, which would take the user off the timeline and dominate the entire experience, and need to be constantly started and stopped to get the sound quality right. Multiple live cards can run in tandem, so this is better design.

However, you'd arguably be able to provide a richer experience in terms of input controls with an immersion over a live card, supporting visual widgets as well as voice- and gesture-driven tools to tweak audio settings. A live card would likely have lots of menu items that would make constant tweaking cumbersome and challenging to achieve pinpoint accuracy, as opposed to a slider control in an immersion. Heck, you could also make the controls contextual and have a concert hall preset kick-in when you're outside a known geofence like your office, or boost the bass as you're walking about the food court.

I was thinking of sketching this up in Glassware Flow Designer (https://developers.google.com/glass/tools-downloads/glassware-flow-designer) as a fun lunchtime experiment and maybe try and hack together a prototype this weekend, but does anyone have any more solid input? I'm actually surprised no one's given this a go yet.

I had considered that there might be some dependency issues with Glass, but the fact that Pandora provides a dedicated volume control menu item sort of proves that we've got access to at least some of the audio manipulation APIs. ___

I'm actually surprised no one's given this a go yet.

I had considered that there might be some dependency issues with Glass, but the fact that Pandora provides a dedicated volume control menu item sort of proves that we've got access to at least some of the audio manipulation APIs. ___
