Forget Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. If I'm going to have to drop almost $100 on a pay-per-view event, give me Lawrence vs. Larusso II: The All-Valley Rematch.

The haka has a unique duality, with the pre-battle cry originating in ancient times. If you've ever seen one performed live, describing it as "thoroughly intimidating" is a massive understatement...it can be downright frightening. It's meant to make an impression on one's opponent. But it's also simultaneously the ultimate sign of respect.

And by both merits, it makes an unforgettable impact.

I need your feedback on a title for a new scientific whitepaper I'm writing, folks. It's either "Evaluation of audio-animatronic algorithms for maxillofacial gesticulation", or "How to make a robot do duckface".

(ps: And try to forgive my allusion to Grease 2 in the picture.)

The Next Great American Setter
Stephen King famously once said, "I have seen the future of horror, and his name is Clive Barker", effectively and graciously passing the literary torch to the next true giant of that industry. I've been watching and writing about international volleyball for better than 25 years - so in similar fashion to King, and with vastly less authoritative chutzpah, I've witnessed the Next Great American Setter. I've seen the future, and he's very good. And his name is Micah Christenson.

At just 22, Christenson inherits some very big shoes as the floor general of USA Volleyball. The legacy is intimidating, including some of the greatest to ever play the position. But the Honolulu native displays the uncanny precision and body control of Dusty Dvorak and freakish athleticism of Jeff Stork, with the size of Lloy Ball.  And what's most... more »

And what's most impressive, drawing comparison to Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, volleyball's not even Christenson's best sport. By his senior year in high school, Christenson was already Hawaii's two-time prep player of the year...in basketball. (Johnny Football is a legendarily prodigious golfer).

I watched him a lot in the recently-completed World League, in which the USA won a bronze medal. He was stellar, leading a team that's incredibly young but very spry. At 6'6" he's perhaps the best pure blocking setter I've seen in a long time, with really quick feet, soft hands, fearless defense, and decision making beyond his years.

Setter is a position that mandates consistency, improvisation, and leadership, all over an extended period of time. It's the one role on the court where longevity matters more than anything.

And by that merit, Team USA and the future of the sport, is literally in good hands. ___

The architecture of the restaurant has a very deliberate flow that mixes the ambiance of its nestled beachside locale with outright culinary mastery for your selection. Patrons are led into the sizable dining area that has ample room for any party - the hall can seat several dozens of people, but at no point do you feel cramped. You’ll have plenty of relaxing space to enjoy your meal, a good conversation, and a stout drink, all against a backdrop that can’t be beat.

The dining room’s floor-to-ceiling bay windows and overhanging architecture give the experience a open feel with an infinity pool quality - you happily feel like you’re just a step away from the beach; that there’s literally no barrier between you enjoying some amazing cuisine at the surf's edge and the glorious nature that awaits you - true to the hotel’s claim of being THE destination facility on Guam that’s closest to the Pacific Ocean, literally just meters from the majestic blues, greens, and whites of the epic backdrop of the rolling sea.

This means there isn’t a bad seat in the house - anywhere you choose you’ll have a magnificent and very socially share-worthy view of picturesque Tumon, which day or night is spectacular.

As for the cuisine itself, the chefs offer an impressive ensemble of classic recipes, creative takes on standards with meats, cheeses, breads, vegetables, and fruit, as well as artisanal fusion dishes that merge fresh island flavors with clever culinary techniques. (My personal favorite is the brilliant melon mint soup - it’s refreshing, light, colorful, and flavorful.) The spread is a holistic mix of entrees, appetizers, and decadent desserts. There’s something for any palette, from the casual diner, to kids who just like tasty fun treats, to the distinguished connoisseur of lunch or dinnertime menus.

As for the staff, they’re amazing. I was asked by no fewer than four different Dusit Thani employees if I was enjoying my meal within. The staff-to-guest ratio is impressive, and each is very well trained and genuinely make you feel at home without overly coddling you. They’re happy you’re visiting them, and the Thai hospitality and customs are effectively promoted.

For the overall experience you get from the moment you enter the massive and welcoming lobby at street level, being seated at Aqua, or finishing off your meal and gazing out at the endless horizon of natural beauty, you’ll be thoroughly satisfied.___

I've found it intriguing that while some MOOC courses about recommender systems properly exhibit the work of Amazon, Netflix, Pandora, Google, and others for collaborative filtering techniques they don't cite the dating services...which are just as effective/innovative and face the same issues, even from a different problem domain.

When I was writing my book on building effective user experiences for wearable computing devices (https://amzn.com/1491946458), I became chummy with a couple of the people who were tapped as technical editors...which is to say that I connected on social networks to people who had previously been strangers. Because of this virtual binding, I could see how they rated/reviewed several apps in the various vendor app stores, and became of something I found equal parts noteworthy and alarming.

I observed how the reviewers gave one-star ratings and went to great lengths to voice their opposition to the fact that Netflix, Hulu, and Watch ESPN don't apply the recommended UI toolkits and design languages - Android's holo and then later material design (neither of which I've ever been crazy about), Microsoft's Metro framework, and the iOS design metaphors. I found this interesting, because I've always respected the risk apps within the over-the-top video delivery service class take in going their own way instead of following the crowd and taking Google and Microsoft and Apple's word on how to build user interfaces as it they were gospel.

It's testament to the fact that those services spend a lot of time understanding their audiences and the means by which they use their apps, and as such, often realize that the suggested design ideas don't really work.

This talk by Todd Yellin describes this approach and how doing their own thing works better for them...but more importantly, for their customers.___

And, oh, Orange is the New Black comes out tomorrow.___

Here's my pre-announcement thoughts from a product standpoint on how in-room streaming access could be. Netflix has essentially achieved this generation's "Free HBO" billboard at motels. Genius.

My next question is about resorts: with those category of hospitality venues, the intent is to explore as much of the property and use as many of the ancillary services as possible, so "in-room" features aren't as heavily pushed. That doesn't rule this out...just means more WiFi throughout the premises for poolside streaming on mobile devices, in-restaurant streaming, etc. It's a tricky balance.

This also means that as YouTube, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video and other OTT players join the fray, this kills-off the appeal of VOD systems.

This is a huge moment not just for Netflix and Marriott, but at the macro level for all over-the-top video delivery players and the hospitality/lodging market. When rumors of this deal swirled months ago, I speculated on how the product might shape up: http://www.slideshare.net/jasonsalas/netflix-lodging-access

This is awesome: seeing the book +Allen Firstenberg and I wrote at Google I/O! :)

Book 'em Mike

Scattered around some of the bookshelves on the second floor are books written by +Google Developer Experts. Here is a shot of the book I wrote with +Jason Salas along with +Mike Wolfson's book on Android Tools - both of them published by +O'Reilly.

If you're at #io15, we're going to be signing the books at the end of the day on Friday. Your chance to get my autograph!

It's startling how nonchalant the crowd was about offline access for YouTube. Even if you're blessed with broadband, that's MAJOR. They finally caught on with Maps offline. Turn-by-turn direction, sans connectivity, is off-the-charts cool.

The applause at I/O for the first time since 2009 appears to be politely perfunctory, not genuinely enthusiastic. Has a lot to do with pacing of the presentations and the lack of schwag announcements so far. (To be fair, the same fate befell WWE's live events, post-Stone Cold Steve Austin.)

Solid insight on how Netflix's server technologies reduce its environmental footprint. And apropos, as I've been thinking a lot lately at the micro level side of the equation: what client-side innovations might we see in terms of diminishing the impact its mobile apps have on a device's battery?

What significant performance gains can be realized across mobile OSes from display, memory, radio & WiFi, given its longform viewing patterns over varying network connectivity?

Even if iOS isn't your cup of tea, it's a pretty cool whirlwind run-through about how the other half (or third, depending on your perspective) does things. It's a very cool language with some sweet syntactical sugar.

Details soon.

I've always been able to draw a lot of parallels between my work showrunning TV content and my work as a product manager for software. The disciplines are basically spitting images of each other. This documentary really hits on the minutiae of the stresses and rewards of Hollywood-style production for procedural and/or serialized TV shows, and overseeing Silicon Valley-esque application development. It's all about creating the most effective user experience possible.

And not going crazy trying to manage all the resources involved within.

WHAT'S NEW IN CARDBOARD: they 86'ed YouTube!
I've sung the praises of YouTube as a virtual reality conduit, so I'm disappointed by the most notable update to the Cardboard app: "New My Videos experience, replacing YouTube experience". YouTube's VR front-end was the one app within the collection of demos that really gave me consistent utility and had the most shelf life, not being a static presentation. In this new app, Google removed the ability to use voice search for videos within YouTube's corpus, as opposed to my much smaller set of "my videos" (those videos on my device), which would be displayed in a 360-panoramic UI.

The app's effectively been rendered from a cloud-aware service to a file browser. Dang.

I hope YouTube's VR version gets spun-off to a standlone product we'll eventually be able to use...or YouTube proper will responsively sniff the client being used to view the content and auto-adjust itself to the appropriate display factor - VR, 10' UI, phone, desktop or tablet.  I hope.___
