Rusty Ferguson54,564♥★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★Ripples of Love -- * Rebuild the Philippines *, V2 from +Rusty FergusonNew Version Updated: May 27, 2014★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★♥This is a circle that supports +Habitat for Humanity’s program to Rebuild the Philippines. To support this circle, you can share it or donate or both.Today was the first day of school in Tacloban. I learned that someone I’m very fond of that is in the second grade needs to bring a portable light to school!  They have no electricity so there are no fans either. Hard to ignore that and I don’t understand it but that tells us the need in the Philippines is still great. We can wait for the government to do it so we need to help as much as possible. These funds will not go to the government but to Habitat for Humanity who is building homes themselves. For some this will be a reminder. Please understand that A lot of people doing a little will have a huge impact. We are making ripples when we post on Google Plus, FaceBook, Twitter and other social media. Why not make those ripples mean something positive? When you make or share a post, those post spreads out across the Internet like tossing a rock into a pond. The Internet is an infinite pond, so our impact can also be as infinite as our zeal to support something worthwhile. What is a little? If only I could get more people to understand that $2.00 is enough if everyone participates we could easily build an entire home for a Filipino family as the cost is under $4500 to build an earthquake and super typhoon resistant home in the Philippines. A home much nicer than most Filipinos live in.If two dollars is all you can give than please give that. It’s enough! Some donated less than a dollar and that too is enough! Every drop expands the ripple.http://www.give2habitat.org/member/rustyf/haiyanHowever, I realize times can be hard. You may not have a dime tospare but you can still help. When you reshare this circle, others will see it.  Though you may not be able to contribute they may be able too. Or they may share it too. The ripple will grow.A week or so ago, I got an email from Habit for Humanity (HFH) requesting additional help for the victims of Typhoon Hiayan. Here is a portion of their email:♥★★★★★★★★★★★★Your commitment to help rebuild the lives of the families who were displaced by Super Typhoon Yolanda inspires me and my coworkers.  Because of you, Habitat has been able so far to repair 22,000 damaged homes and to start constructing the first 1,000 of the 30,000 houses it aims to construct for the Yolanda survivors.I'm writing to you right now -- exactly six months after the tragedy -- in behalf of the Yolanda survivors.  Most of the displaced families are still living in makeshift houses, tents, and evacuation centers. They are currently enduring a hot summer but soon it will be replaced by the country's often very wet season.  I urge you, therefore, to help us remind others about them.♥★★★★★★★★★★★★There was a PDF included that revealed this:♥★★★★★★★★★★★★It’s been six months since Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan), made its tragic landfall in the Philippines on November 8, 2014. Aside from the more than 8,000 Filipinos who died and are still missing, the typhoon affected…14 million FilipinosDestroyed or severely damaged more than a million homesWiped out or impaired millions of people’s livelihoods…And dreams. But there’s hope. You can support them by donating through >>>>> http://www.give2habitat.org/member/rustyf/haiyan(Additional options for donations b2014-06-02 12:07:07457161185152CC G+

Gregg Lantz2,962Tomorrow is a taxing day here in the United States. You get to decide if you want to buy Glass (sorry IRS). If you're not sure and would like to know what others are saying, add this circle.  You'll be able to look at public posts from people that use Glass and people that purchased Glass and put it on the shelf while software was being developed. You'll get both sides of the story. Hopefully this circle will help make the decision process a little easier. Matt Gibson920,723Ok so we are going to try something different here...As you may have noticed, I am sharing a circle of really cool people and pages for you to add to your circles.  If you want cool content from cool people - add the circle!  It's that simple!  If YOU would like your profile to be shared to almost 1 million people, leave me a comment that tells me a little bit about YOU.  What do you like?  What is your favorite music?  Where do you live?  Let's get to know each other!  What are your social network or website addresses (simply posting a link without telling me about YOU won't make the cut btw)? Here is an example:Hi!  My name is +Matt Gibson and I am an independent artist working on my 1st album!  I like all forms of music but I tend to lean towards metal.  I play guitar, piano, drums and saxophone as well as sing!  You can check out my website at www.crimsonsymphony.com and you can subscribe to my +YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/crimsonsymphonymusicI like books by great authors like Tolkien, +TERRY BROOKS  and Raymond Feist among others.  I read a lot of non-fiction as well on subjects like business, marketing, antiques and tech.I am an amateur gardener and I aspire to own my own beehives.I like reading your posts because you are such a handsome fellow with that long wavy hair and manly beard and....ahem ok you can skip that part unless you really mean it LOL.Now that's not hard is it?  Tell me about yourself and get your profile shared to a million people!  Not a bad deal eh?New and OLD friends can participate but no cheating or dumb comments like "add me" or "hi".  You should all thank +Amanda Blain for giving me this idea to steal for our benefit btw... so let the fun and networking begin!!PS If your comment is really cool you may find yourself in the next Cool People circle and who knows, maybe we will become friends or colleagues? 2013-10-03 00:47:03249721243CC G+

Here's the output from a modeling gig. It's the promotional glossy for the upcoming fall TV season. Or, the author image for my book. Or, my audition portfolio for a reality show I'm being forced against my will to participate in. Or, Nice Guys Wear Ties, my latest venture. Or, proof for my mom that I don't still work at Blockbuster. Or, a teaser for a new live interactive gameshow I'm hosting. Or, my cover shot for what I hope will be an emotionally-fulfilling career in insurance and/or real estate and/or medical supply sales. It's one of these...or all of them.

I'm really not sure which anymore. ;)

As a member of the Football Writers Association of America, I'm enjoying that time of year when FCS schools distribute their annual media guides. And it's quite fitting how the Sooners (get it?) are the first out of the gate to distribute theirs. Oklahoma and Notre Dame tend to get theirs out early, while in recent years Louisville and Alabama have been more proactive with spinning the Heisman hype.

Big FYI for those of you prepping for the Moto 360 surge. The round forms also enforce an assumed square border so that UI elements wouldn't be cut off at the edges or risk bleeding-off outside the visible surface.

We have been doing some testing of Android Wear applications on devices with round displays, and are excited about the apps that are ready to go right now. I wanted to share a few hints about dealing with some common pitfalls, where some apps would fail with exceptions, since they were not tested on the AndroidWearRound emulator from the Android SDK.

The most common mistake can occur when using WatchViewStub, which inflates either a rect_activity_my.xml or a round_activity_my.xml. A developer might mistakenly add the UI views to only the rectangular layout file and make calls to findViewById(). Since the round layout was not filled out, findViewById() will return null, and will then throw a NullPointerException.

If you want to use the same layout between devices, or if you require a rectangular layout, you can use BoxInsetLayout from the wearable support library. This layout ensures that everything will automatically be kept within a box that fits within any round display. To find out more about designing for round displays, check out this I/O Byte video Fullscreen apps for Android Wear

Make sure that you test your apps on your current square devices, the AndroidWearSquare emulator, and the AndroidWearRound emulator. This way, your applications will be ready and working for when round devices start arriving in the market soon!

Note: there is a bug in the current AVD setup where there are three AndroidWearRound profiles available to choose from in the “Device” dropdown. Make sure you pick the middle one for now, one of the others is not correct. This is currently being fixed and should be released to the public soon.___Big FYI for those of you prepping for the Moto 360 surge. The round forms also enforce an assumed square border so that UI elements wouldn't be cut off at the edges or risk bleeding-off outside the visible surface.

Christmas in August: skipping empty DIRs in Github repos
This tooltip has been my morning's most pleasant revelation. I've probably given myself low-grade Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from endlessly clicking-through scores of empty folders in repositories due to Java package name mapping over the years just to get to the source code file. Much appreciated!

My officemate, fresh back from his honeymoon in Europe, got me this bamboo puzzle in Germany. Pardon me for sounding like a wuss, but I'm worried that if I solve it the room will suddenly get dark, I'll hear chains creaking, and Pinhead will come out of the floor. I'm neurotic like that.

Irony: custom watchface development isn't officially supported in an otherwise rich Android Wear SDK at the moment...and yet, that's all people seem to be building. We need more actual apps.

I had a lengthy conversation recently with an experienced architect about the feasibility of Google ever adopting Python as a language for Android development (not just for scripting, but a first-class framework supported by the Android SDK). It also makes me wonder how much easier it would be to whip together multiplatform apps - and by that I mean having to work with fewer files and folders for app container mechanics than a comparable Java framework. Conversely, how much more difficult would it be to write an app without the rich support of IDEs like Eclipse or Android Studio?

The docs for Google App Engine show how multiple languages can be supported, but the Java docs clearly denote how much more involved the process is to manage a project.

(For the record, I write in both Python and Java. I kissed and made up with Java a couple of years ago and quite enjoy the experience.)

I definitely believe in the correlation of my penchant to build multiplatform apps and my being the product of a mixed marriage. No joke. It's just natural for me to think of things in different contexts, from a variety of perspectives, and expressed as more than just a solitary experience. In my mind, anything less is incomplete.

This isn't a new piece about Zynga's meteoric rise to prominence and then its much-balleyhooed fall from grace, but it is poignant to note the perfect storm of environmental conditions that brought the gaming shop crashing back down to earth, especially as the company's share price could fall below $2 in the next couple of weeks.

Very interesting native gaming concept for Glass. You can use voice commands to move in the coordinate system, games are persisted so as to preserve microinteractions (in a sense), and a features is "the ability to import any third party chess engine to replace the friendly built-in Java engine". THAT's cool.

I'd optimally like to be able to play other real people online in addition to a computerized opponent. But this is a slick implementation of input controls.

"No...more...text messages...EVER!!!"
Forgive the allusion to Mommie Dearest - which to this day still scares the crap out of me - but it's a perfect analogy to a piece of software I wrote eons ago that I finally put out to pasture. 13 years ago, I hacked together an opt-in SMS mass mailer utility in C# to distribute breaking news to our customers. We've tweaked it a couple times for scalability, but essentially the code and backend architecture is the same.

Then, as now, SMS was largely the only universal service that mobile users are running, so it was the perfect gateway to keep people informed without compatibility and/or connectivity issues, and it moved between people switching carriers beautifully...although admittedly the volume of people that use it anymore is dwindling rapidly, to the point where it's fruitless for us to continue to support it. more »

There are much richer ways to inform people of breaking news - mobile browsers, mobile apps, and social networks, specifically. We messed with XMPP chatbots across open IM platforms a few years ago (Jabber, AOL, Google Talk), but those never really took off with the masses. SMS was superior in its simplicity. I've also noted a number of people trying to get us blacklisted for spam, either accidentally or to intentionally game our system.

So text messaging has served us very well over the years, but sometimes you have to learn when to let go. And in so doing, better serve your customers - and hopefully suppress any memories of Faye Dunaway going ballistic about wire hangers.___

BTS: producing a golf tournament for TV
I'm a broadcaster, yes, but I'm a techie first and foremost. So whenever we have a field production and get to play with cool gear, I'm more than happy to help our production crew at +KUAM News transport and operate our rigs. We organized a charity golf tournament yesterday, with me hosting an accompanying TV special. In between recording my standup segments, I gripped for my video guys and did still photography and BTS bits.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day, so we broke out our custom "news drone" that we designed for hole flyovers and to follow drives off the tee, as well as the custom rail system that we engineered in-house for smooth panning during putting situations. We also used a bunch of tablets to preview and edit footage from the golf carts.

I'm really not sure which anymore. ;)

I'm re-sharing this after much testing and tinkering. It seems that the only (as I can find so far) is the "navigating" card, which properly wakes a connected handheld, sends data, and launches the specified activity with a map. So it is possible...just not widely practiced.

Let's hammer out the code when creating a notification object so we can develop a proper pattern so at least we have the choice to keep a bridged device idle or wake it up.

Wearable wake lock design patterns?
I realize the general out-of-box behavior when executing actions from Android Wear devices that trigger activities on a connected handheld, primarily through the "Open on phone" action, is to keep the handheld display off - but I'd like to see this changed. Ostensibly keeping the phone's screen idle is done to (1) preserve battery drain from repeatedly spinning-up resources when waking the display, and/or (2) the lack of the required permissions in the handheld's application manifest to implement wake locks (https://developer.android.com/training/scheduling/wakelock.html#cpu), which would require modification and redeployment of the app, which not everyone's willing to do.

In theory this works for conserving resources, but in reality this is counterproductive towards the goal of catering to microinteractions, as the usage model imposes an extra step for me to have to fidget with my phone just to turn the screen on so I can see what I just sent myself. Anytime I invoke the Open action on my smartwatch, I want to interact with my handheld immediately, not at some point in the future. I want this to be an "in the now" action, not a queue.

Here's another quick hit about a docu-mocumentary I streamed. It's so awkward and revealing that a prodigy of a ventriloquist would donate her mentor's (and former lover's) puppets to a museum full of artifacts for ventriloquists who have passed on that it really works. It's dark, funny, inspiring, and honest.

I've always been a student of comedy, and the art of perfectly crafting and delivering a solid joke is endlessly fascinating to me. I streamed this documentary on the nuances of the Jewish brand of evoking laughter last night, and it's thoroughly brilliant. With some of my favorite all-time comics being Jewish, I couldn't not watch.

The film is a hilarious romp, focusing on the motivations behind the Jewish mindset, the ability to turn unique observations into punchlines, the distinct delivery, and how this approach differs from other old school styles like Italian and Irish comics and even more recently Asians and Polynesians, and what it was like in the old days to see the masters of the art form play the Catskills. It also gets serious and introspective, dissecting how the culture itself has shifted in various ways from previous generations to the present day.

This article about wearable development came out a few months ago, but it's worth revisiting, largely because I'm seeing a lot of people involved in the space neglect the core component of wearable apps: contextual signals. Sure, microinteractions and brevity in both content and design in order to accommodate wearable form factors are critical, but those all play into the basic notion of using the wearer's environment, location, identity, proximity, activities, time, and conditions as the stage for the application. That needs to be the fundamental launching pad.

Some tough first-round matchups here. Cam Newton's one-and-done year at Jordan-Hare eeks out over Doug Flutie's pint-sized miracle season in Chestnut Hill. But Vince Young's 2005 campaign upending Mighty USC facing off against The Galloping Ghost? OUCH.

When I first got into Android way back in the early days, I instantly knew the magic feature, the secret sauce, the connective tissue, was intents. And I knew it was only starting out.

Bridged notifications in Android Wear represent an evolution of Android intents - messages can now be passed explicitly between components within the scope of the same application, implicitly between components within apps resident on the same device, and now also between devices connected through the same Google account. This is an incredibly powerful facility you can use.

Fitbit doesn't have an app with Android Wear support, but I now get pushed alerts about events I wouldn't normally get automatically. Awesome!

I've been exhaustively testing, analyzing, and playing with a ton of apps that have Android Wear support outside of basic notification bridging. And while I'm far from done, I must say the +allthecooks smartwatch support is simply brilliant.

That's not to denigrate any other wearable apps for being less feature-rich or slick...a lot of what's officially sanctioned by Google at the moment (https://play.google.com/store/apps/collection/promotion_30008f2_io_android_wear) really works for their respective models. But All the Cooks really explored the capabilities of the Android Wear SDK, especially when it comes to synced data sharing, and made it work for them. It's really impressive work without being too over the top, or implementing a feature just for implementation's sake, or not losing focus of what their app was meant to do within the context of a microinteraction.E... more »

Are there any fellow fantasy football players/managers writing any cool apps for the upcoming draft? If so, which API(s) are you tapping?

I was thinking of hacking a draft notifier application so I can be kept abreast of my time remaining on the clock until my next pick and where my roster queue stands. I wish +NFL Network provided this already as an extension for wearables that works with its existing fantasy app. They missed out on the IRL Draft this past May, but hopefully they'll be on board next season.

Yahoo's got a pretty good set of developer docs they've combined into a book: https://developer.yahoo.com/fantasysports/guide/

And I also learned right before we went on the air that Her Highness is my second-cousin. Nice!

Whoo-hoo! It's finally out! I've been waiting for this wireframing tool since it was announced at I/O a month ago. #stoked

Strong design is at the very core of great Glassware. We know that creating a total user experience that delivers exactly what a user needs when he or she needs it is not as easy as it may seem. So, we have created the Glassware Flow Designer tool to help you design your ideal flow and lay out the best user experience before diving too deep into your coding.

We built this tool specifically for Glass using common design patterns and layouts to help you design your Glassware. Your flows are stored on Google Drive, where you can share them with colleagues, comment on them, and even edit them collaboratively. We have been using this tool and process internally and we are very excited to make this beta available to you. Here’s to great design and even more great Glassware!___Whoo-hoo! It's finally out!
