Dr. John Cassone11,938Dr. John's August Selectgood content and engagementThese are people I follow, engage with, and suggest for my new followers who want quality people in their stream. I've also included some of my new engagers. This is not a megacircle. People are only added based on good content or my experience engaging with them.Best way to sort and manage your stream:1. add new circle2. follow it in your stream separately 3. engage with those that interest you (good content/interaction)4. cherry pick those you like and make your own circles5. let go of the rest (or put them in a circle that's dialed down on your stream)If you add too many people too often then you will not build meaningful connections which is the point here.Circle Management Basics:1. Circles control who you follow:> I might feel like reading the news so I have a news channel circle. I don't build relationships with these pages but follow them and share content when interesting. This way I can completely control my stream based on my mood.2. Circles control who your share to: > Share to your interests: I like martial arts but most of my followers do not. By collecting a circle of others that like martial arts I can share specifically to those interested in this topic and not bore anyone.> I have also collected an "inner circle" of g-peeps that I have gotten to know and share more person pics and info with.3. Control your stream flow:> When you click on a specific circle in your stream you can adjust how much the posts from that circle appear in your "everything" stream. > Organize people based on flow: I have three main circles called 1, 2, and 3. I have the amount of flow dialed in priority (circle 1 is high, 2 is medium, and 3 is low). I move people between circles based on the progression of our relationship. > Notify circle: I have another circle with people that I don't want to miss a single post from. This circle is set to notify me whenever someone from it posts. This is a great way to focus on building a relationship with specific people.Happy Plussing :)2014-08-07 14:37:331779413CC G+

Daniel Mihai Popescu52,356They are the Survivors, a circle I'm going to share more often, because it has its own dynamic :)I hope you receive the notification this time, and if you receive it, it means you are in the circle, so you are not required to do anything. Just a "+1" from your part will be greatly appreciated, there's no need to spend your precious time with sharing or commenting. For non-members, I think you have to figure out on your own what to do, because usually I don't promise anything, I'm don't barter my circles membership. If you add the circle, it's definitively your gain, so I strongly suggest you to do so. The circle's title is not in vain, it really suggests the circle's dynamic. #danielmihaipopescusharedcircle   #maximumperformance  This, like all of my other circles, is an homage to you.Thank you very much for being my friends!2014-06-26 14:46:19412442853CC G+

Life in the Village, part 26: Couples

#correlation

Dogs and their humans : I'm a little skeptical about the research, and there is correlation, but not causality. But this was an amusing story picked up by a number of websites. It makes for a funny anyway, even if  it's not science. Anecdotally, this may make sense, but that does not prove anything :)

Why you look like your dog : _Researchers recruited around 500 college students and asked them to look at photos of 40 people and dogs, all shown from the shoulders up, against white backgrounds. The people and dogs were paired, some in the correct combination of owner and pet, others randomly. The participants' task was to pick out which combinations of actual pets and owners, and they chose correctly 80 percent of the time. _

Its in the eyes : Next, the researchers obscured parts of the photos, covering either the dog's or the human's eyes or mouth, Slate explains. The participants still did well if the mouths were covered, with a success rate of 73 percent. When the eyes were covered, however, that rate dropped drastically, with success becoming a matter of random chance. Encouraged by this finding, Slate writes, the team cropped the images to only show the eyes of the humans and their dogs. Impressively, students who saw just the eye photos had a 74 percent success rate.

Mechanism a mystery : The logical scientific explanation about our apparently superhuman (or at least subconscious) ability to extract meaningful psychological cues from eyes is still elusive. Nakajima is just as stumped as the rest of us about the underlying mechanism.

Gaia: Mngwa

#caturday

“For nights the whole town lived in fear, and although we doubled the police-guards we had difficulty in getting the men to go on duty. But I have seen those same men rout a lion out of a bush-patch with sticks! They swore that this beast was not a lion, nor a leopard, but a Mngwa." (Captain William Hitchens)

A common trait of mystery big cats, besides their general elusiveness, seems to be their general aggressivity towards humans. The “strange one”, the Mngwa of Tanzania, makes no exception. Local songs about the creature date back to the 12th century, but the first European hunters and settlers dismissed them as old wives’ tales and cock-and-bull stories until the numbers of reports grew from the 1890s to the 1920s and Cpt Hitchens, one of the local colonial authorities, described one badly mauled victim of the Mngwa clutching tufts of grey hair in his hands. Hunting parties organised to run the Mngwa to ground usually ended up like the clichés from a story by Rice Burroughs or Rider Haggard. Either the tracks found petered out in the mountains or the native bearers and even seasoned lion hunters at some point simply refused to follow up into the territory supposed to be roamed by the “strange one” and thus, the Mngwa’s existence remains a mystery to this day.

Described as being as big as a donkey and as grey with brindled fur, the Nunda, as it is sometimes called, clearly stands out from the rest of the African big cats. Speculations about what it might actually be vary accordingly, but the persistence of the tales over almost a millennium more or less rule out the possibility of a occasionally occurring mutation of a lion or a leopard. A giant variant of the rare African golden cat has been assumed and certainly the most exiting explanation is the possibility of a surviving small population of the Pleistocene panthera crassidens. Panthera crassidens was something along the lines of an overgrown leopard with the jaws reminiscent of that of a tiger. However, an unknown sub-species of the tiger living hidden in Africa has been frequently brought into play as well. Outside of Africa, reports of so-called Blue or Maltese Tigers with bluish fur and dark grey stripes have been recorded from East Asia, but who knows, maybe the remote areas of Tanzania are its haunt and not China or Burma?

Whatever may be the case, the “strange one” found a home in the open-air-enclosure of the #wunderkammer   in the guise of a blue tiger, as a reminiscence of old tales of adventure from Africa and a reminder that these stories still exist, unexplained to the days, to be wondered and marvelled at.

Accordingly an artist’s imagination of a blue tiger is depicted below, found on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltese_tiger

And more about the Mngwa can be found on:

Affordances and the musically extended mind
"... action possibilities in a perceiver’s environment that are specified relationally, that is, both by (1) particular structural features of the environment and things in it, as well as (2) the repertoire of sensorimotor capacities the perceiver employs to detect and respond to these structural features. A perceiver, in virtue of being embodied in a particular sort of way – and possessing an accumulated history of environmental interactions – will experience affordances as furnishing different sets of interactive possibilities."

Evolution of Conversation
From a mostly a-resonant (ignorant from a music, musicmaking, resonance perspective) broadcast, eyeballs, couch potato audiences vegging in a couch - to a vibrant, thriving, co-evolving, resonant: co-efficacy and scenius.
http://goo.gl/g04R4A

Evolution of Conversation: Complex Responsive Processes
A conversation is a set of complex responsive processes out of which unfolds patterns bridging the gap between mindfulness and effective convivial action.

Work is a meaningful, teleological subset of complex responsive processes
"The conversation is the work."
-- David Whyte

Work multiplied with flow equals play
"Work is a subset of play."
-- +John Kellden

Cathedrals, Bazaars, Third Places
Any sufficiently advanced work, flow and play is indistinguishable from designing and building and rejoicing in - cathedrals. Around all sufficiently inclusive cathedrals, there's bazaars conducive to conviviality. A Cathedral is an anchoring affordance of pure verticality. a Bazaar is an anchoring affordance of pure horizontality. The liminal zone between cathedral and bazaar, is synonymous with both commons and third place, and remains essential for all societies, all human togetherness.

Architecture: Drawing Forth Beauty and Thrivabiity  -  Christopher Alexander's Generative Tea House Sequence
Drawing primarily from evidence and examples of processes in nature as understood by the natural sciences, especially biology and physics, Alexander aims in volume 2 to create an updated generative process that might be used for 21st-century architecture and design. His means toward this end is a series of 10 structure-enhancing actions that he claims will always intensify the life and wholeness of a thing:

(1) step-by-step adaptation
(2) each step helping to enhance the whole
(3) always making centers
(4) allowing steps to unfold in the most fitting order
(5) creating uniqueness everywhere
(6) Working to understand the needs of clients and users (interestingly, his earlier “pattern language” remains an important tool here)
(7) evoking and being guided by deep feeling of the whole
(8) finding coherent geometric order
(9) establishing a form language that arises from and shapes the thing being made
(10) always striving for a simplicity by which the thing becomes more coherent and pure.
-- David Seamon   http://goo.gl/HQVl53   http://goo.gl/eIyefn

In this post I'm primarily interested in modules. Modules of meaning, connecting, designing, redesigning, building, sensemaking, thriving.

Modular Sensemaking: Recombine, Plug and Play Method Cards
All John Kellden Method Cards are Enaction Affordances. If a card session participant, method card player is feeling sufficient stewardship around the generative inquiry and is holding space conducive to exploring the exam question (eg in a post) - then each method card can afford:

- perceiving
- (re)orienting towards possibilities - situational leading
- moving - including small steps of designing, deciding - change
- acting
- enacting
- learning - multiple, linear, non-linear, metacognitive feedback loops connecting to the previous five stages.

Moving here includes metalogue. All five stages form one larger feedback loop, a sensemaking enacting of a particular umwelt -  traversong and traversing a more or less resonant fitness landscape.

Metalogue
Meaning-moving-with.

Data and Story
There's five dimensions of code:

-  Civilizational code: Metalogue
-  Cultural code: Stewardship - the current 20C ownership code in need of debugging
-  Team, Organizing code: Scenius
-  Language code: Music
-  Relational code: Data - code rendered in data (binary, concurrency)

The optimal trimtabs are those that can form connective patterns between steps in generative sequences and processes, out of which conviviality.

21C Conversations: Net Neutrality

"While providers of access to the Net charge for the privilege, the Net itself — that thing made possible by its base protocols — has no business model. This is one reason it produces economic externalities in abundance beyond calculation. More than a rising tide that lifts all boats, it is a world of infinitely varied possibilities, all made possible by a base nature that no phone or cable company ever would have invented for the world, had the job been left up to them alone."

Most people are oblivious to this - the lack of business model, the design instead being a set of protocols:

-  opportunities beyond business opportunities

I've had a hunch for a long time, that lurkers, readers, are equally valuable to the Conversation Community as the prolifickers, the writers. I didn't fully understand that until this post and thread, until my revisiting A Moveable Feast. The simplest things are always the most profound.

Russia Wants Bulgarians to Stop Vandalizing Soviet Monuments
… To Look Like American Superheroes

Russia is demanding that Bulgaria try harder to prevent vandalism of Soviet monuments, after yet another monument to Soviet troops in Sofia was spray-painted, ITAR-Tass reported.

The Russian Embassy in Bulgaria has issued a note demanding that its former Soviet-era ally clean up the monument in Sofia's Lozenets district, identify and punish those responsible, and take "exhaustive measures" to prevent similar attacks in the future, the news agency reported Monday.

… The vandalism was the latest in a series of similar recent incidents in Bulgaria — each drawing angry criticism from Moscow.

Early this year, unknown artists painted another monument to Soviet troops in Sofia in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Adopt, Adapt, Exapt
Three dimensions of change.

Engagement
Immersion is essential for all digital platforms. The experience when using it, should include an attraction, a pull - eg, I'd better join Google+ since a gazillion others are "there". Once we're "here", there should also be incentives for remaining here, for spending our time and attention. In short, we need to be able to find content, content that is both engaging and of sufficient quality for our needs. Out of this:

engagement

Empowerment
In this day and age, we're frantically busy, fragmented beyond belief, and frustrated to the point of either cynicism, apathy and/or mindless consuming  - fast carbs and pithy quotes on pretty pictures.

When Google provides a digital platform, where we can meaningfully connect with millions of other people, many of which are great, decent human beings - our common response is cat gifs.

Little by little though, through what +Mark Traphagen calls GUBM, Google User Behavior Modification, we adapt to these newfangled digital tools, and we learn about (eg through social curation, through meaningful connecivity) all the opportunities that are right here and we grow increasingly skilled at using them, out of which:

empowerment

Return on Engagement
On digital platforms, you'll find tons of social media marketers.
Are they the scourge of the earth? No. Exapt your perceptual filters. :)
They are showcasing a third dimension of change, exaptation.

Exaptation:
"...a trait can evolve because it served one particular function, but subsequently it may come to serve another. Exaptations are common in both anatomy and behaviour. Bird feathers are a classic example: initially they may have evolved for temperature regulation, but later were adapted for flight."
http://goo.gl/10ySwB

Innovation, including innovation in how to use media, is one of the many examples of exaptation.  +Eric Enge and +Mark Traphagen are making use of traditional mass media broadcast artifacts, including Interview, Dialogue and Video.
Why Does Google+ Now Have View Counts? - Here's Why Episode 6

They've also exapted these three tools - combined them and turned them into something that creates a win-win-win:

-  a win for them - inferred from plusses, reshares, follower and view count
-  a win for all others who enjoy consuming quality content and
-  a third win, for Google as media provider and aggregator of data

In short:

return on engagement

Additional perspectives on exaptation:
+Joachim Stroh +Ron Scroggin +Henk Hadders +John Tropea +Monica Anderson +Simon Wardley +Gideon Rosenblatt +David Amerland +Mani Saint-Victor +Iblis Bane +Grizwald Grim +Peter Hatherley  +Laston Kirkland +Tyger AC +Andrea Graziano +Doug Breitbart +Benjamin Brownell +joe breskin +Joe Raimondo

Examples of exaptation:
DIY, hacking, tinkering, maker labs, 3d printing, ingenuity, insights, snap-to-grid (model, reality), gaming the system, thinking on your feet. A MacGyver approach.

21C Superpowers
There's four gods that can endow players with superpowers in this third game:

Prometheus: giving you the superpower of stealing fire. You need to learn discernment for yourself though, eg when to don the Social Marketing Asbestos/Teflon Armor, and when to use your Dancing Wu Li Typing Fingers.

The Mermaid: giving you the superpower of influence, through lots and lots of likeability affordances, some of which results in likes, retweets and plusses.

Epimetheus: giving you access to a device called digital exobrain, where you can supercharge your memory with a silicon implant.

The Unicorn: where your superpower consists in catalyzing nerdgasms in other people through supercharging your inner awesomeness and interestingness.

Beware though!

Meme Rush Ambush
Neocortex: The Gathering, also comes fully loaded with Ogres, Trolls and a lot of other Miscreants, and headshots are not always effective - you need to near constantly update your graph traversal, lest you get stuck in a biosemiotics local optima, eg a cleverly camouflaged Meme Rush turning into a Meme Buzz Ambush.

Neocortex: The Two Essential Addons
The two most important addons you should buy and install:

Neuroplasticity

Applied Biosemiotics

Once you have those two installed in your Wetware Instance of Neocortex: The Gathering  - you can proceed to mod lots of other power object addons that you will encounter along your quest.

Gaia, part 5: Ecolinguistics

Dr  +Arran Stibbe (Ecolinguist) just updated the Language and Ecology Research Forum website – it’s higher quality now and can be viewed on iPads and mobile phones. You can see it at www.ecoling.net - please let him know if notice any errors.

#Ecolinguistics  examines the influence of language on the life-sustaining relationships of humans with each other, with other organisms and with the natural environment. Research ranges from the impact of advertising discourse in encouraging ecologically damaging consumption to the power of nature poetry to encourage respect for the natural world. Therefore this discipline and website website is completely in line with the science of #BioculturalDiversity .

Arran is also keen to receive feedbacks on ‘Key ecolinguistics books’ for the bibliography section of the website.  Comment here on the post and add arran's name (with "+" before) or email him dirrectly. The books need to be relevant to ecolinguistics, general enough to be useful for a range of researchers, accessibly written so we don’t put off anyone coming to ecolinguistics for the first time, and can be in any language).

The Forum now has more than 300 members, and Arran has been getting requests for work on ecolinguistics from publishers like Routledge, Blackwell, and Bloomsbury, which shows that ecolinguistics is becoming more mainstream.

Would be awesome to get a full section in our community to discuss linkages between ecolinguistic and biocultural science. Hope to see this growing here.

21C Transmedia: Conversations with the Dead

ht and excerpt +Vicky Gallardo :

"Reading has always been for me a sort of practical cartography. Like other readers, I have an absolute trust in the capability that reading has to map my world. I know that on a page somewhere on my shelves, staring down at me now, is the question I’m struggling with today, put into words long ago, perhaps, by someone who could not have known of my existence. The relationship between a reader and a book is one that eliminates the barriers of time and space and allows for what Francisco de Quevedo, in the sixteenth century, called “conversations with the dead.” In those conversations I’m revealed. They shape me and lend me a certain magical power."

Life in the Village, part 17: Census

In the most recent guesstimate, there were three Pooh's, five Piglets and a whole bunch of Shepards in the Village. It's not always easy to tell, since there's Tiggers bouncing around and all kinds of Heffalumps coming and going as well...maybe there's many more?

Deep Stuff, part 5: Everything Is Obvious

Once we've switched to our own true coordinates.

"If you let go of your facade, and don't try to trade it in for a new one, your thoughts and emotions will become unanchored and begin passing through you. It will be a scary experience. You will feel panic deep inside, and you will be unable to get your bearings. This is what people feel when something very important outside does not fit their inner model. The facade ceases to work and begins to crumble. When it can no longer protect you, you experience great fear and panic. However, you'll find that if you're willing to face that sense of panic, there is a way to go past it. You can go further back into the consciousness  that is experiencing it , and the panic will stop. Then there will be a great peace, like nothing you've ever felt..."
Michael Singer
The Untethered Soul

I'm reading Singer's book alongside  this book by Watts .
Almost like the same information-- in one book presented in an experiential /spiritual way and in the Watts book presented logically/rationally.

This is a description of what Watts has done in his book:

“Watts revolutionized the study of networks by describing the Small Worlds network pattern, where large networks of anything—cells, computers, people—tend to be clusters of clusters of clusters, connected by a only a few nodes. In Everything Is Obvious, he looks at a key effect of this pattern: the viral spread of any idea passes through so many random links that even a perfect understanding of the past does not equip
us to predict the future.”

Life in the Village, part 16: 2023

What every village in the world could do, starting yesterday already, is to position themselves as sustainable, according to local opportunities and talents of villagers.

#Business case for #sustainability in #construction / #builtenvironment

"This study adds to a growing body of work on the costs and value of sustainability. It provides further strong evidence that a sustainable approach need not add significantly to building costs. And, where there are additional capital costs, these can be repaid relatively quickly through the reduced costs of operating the building."___Life in the Village, part 16: 2023

Zen of Small Tasks: Capture

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes and ships and sealing-wax
Of post processing and kings-
And why the sea is boiling hot-
And whether pigs have wings."

I will be speaking at the +B and H Event Space today from 4:00 to 6:00pm. If anyone's in the area, come by and say hello. I am fairly certain it will be recorded as no one is better than B&H at exceeding the expectations of photographers the world over.

For the record, went out for my daily hour-long creative exercise regimen with my camera. Sometimes, I seek things out. Today, this found me. Curiouser and curiouser.

Zen of Small Tasks: Ghost Hunter Kit

We need to be composed about these things. In the virtual realm, we now and then come across ghosts; living and dead authors as well as other spirits of sometime dubious intent and/or origin. Some of these hail all the way from Sweden, and with only the slightest provocation some of them might start singing using foreign tongues...

“I look for ghosts; but none will force
Their way to me; 'tis falsely said
That even there was intercourse
Between the living and the dead.” (William Wordsworth)

Friederike von Zarnewanz had been a sickly child. Even her “von” was a bit shaky, the title being acquired by her sire, a man of sterling qualities, especially in regards to Pounds Sterling, Dollars and Marks, along with the old manor and estate east of the river Elbe, full of somebody else’s memories. Her own remembrances of a bedridden infancy included white ladies’ hands rocking her cradle and footsteps and eerie songs resounding from the large, empty hallways when everybody was supposed to be asleep and only her and the ghosts of the old place were awake. Those shreds of a little girl’s memory were blended into the feverish dreams rooted deep in her sick lungs and the images of headless horsemen pursuing her, flour bags crushing her weak chest and gnawing big pale worms were shrugged off by her various nannies, all of them French and pretty and of a sound Parisian down-to-earthness. For a while, she learned to shrug with them, but later, lying in her deckchair, a blanket over her knees in the solarium of the sanatorium at Davos in the Swiss Alps, they came creeping back, those memories and while she read the novels of Mrs Ann Radcliffe, she took every rational explanation the author found as a personal affront . She would go back to the old estate, that once had belonged to a branch of the infamous Itzenplitz family. She would return with everything modern science had to offer and prove them wrong. The French nannies, the unimaginative Protestant pastors, her sterling father and Mrs Ann Radcliffe. She would make the memories of the place her own. When the war was over. When her strong coughs had stopped. When spring had come.

Depicted below is a wonderful ensemble of a ghost hunter’s kit with trappings from the 1920s and early 1930s, just like the one poor Charlotte von Zarnewanz might have had acquired in her day, if only… and now the kit is exhibited at the #wunderkammer for lovers of the respective tales of Henry James, Algernon Blackwood William Hope Hodgson and, of course, Montague Rhodes James and those who’ve always thought that Radcliffe overdid rationality.

The picture of the kit was found on:
