Daniel Mihai Popescu61,295This circle is called Survivors!  It is dedicated to all of you :)I waited to fill it a little more with some new faces :)I hope you are notified, if not, nothing changes.Just a "+1" is more than enough (and I speak here for the members) #danielmihaipopescusharedcircles   #maximumperformance  It is an homage to you, so there's no need to share it, there are no conditions. If I forgot any of you, please forgive me and tell me, instead of uncircle me without notice :)I never was in "follow me and I'll follow you back" game, not here, nor on Twitter, where people are more liberal :)I'm out of the sharing circles game, as most of you already have noticed, and it's up to anyone to do whatever he/she/it likes with that :) I thank to any of you who kept in their public shared circles the time I have been absent (there was a very motivated reason for it), and I'm absolutely passive about the people who took me out of their public circles, considering they have not an immediate benefit from that. Oh, and I'm very glad because some circle spammers have unfollowed me. I do not really deserve their company :)Have a wonderful weekend, dear friends!2014-10-18 18:08:10469383955

Dr. John Cassone12,100Dr. John's Selectgood content and engagementThese are people I follow, engage with, and suggest for my new followers who want quality people in their stream. This circle changes each time I share it based on how people are engaging and sharing content. This is not a megacircle.People are only added based on good content or my experience engaging with them.Best way to sort and manage your stream:1. add new circle2. follow it in your stream separately 3. engage with those that interest you (good content/interaction)4. cherry pick those you like and make your own circles5. let go of the rest (or put them in a circle that's dialed down on your stream)If you add too many people too often then you will not build meaningful connections which is the point here.Circle Management Basics:1. Circles control who you follow:►   I might feel like reading the news so I have a news channel circle. I don't build relationships with these pages but follow them and share content when interesting. This way I can completely control my stream based on my mood.2. Circles control who your share to: ►   Share to your interests: I like martial arts but most of my followers do not. By collecting a circle of others that like martial arts I can share specifically to those interested in this topic and not bore anyone.►  I have also collected an "inner circle" of g-peeps that I have gotten to know and share more person pics and info with.3. Control your stream flow:►   When you click on a specific circle in your stream you can adjust how much the posts from that circle appear in your "everything" stream. ►   Organize people based on flow: I have three main circles called 1, 2, and 3. I have the amount of flow dialed in priority (circle 1 is high, 2 is medium, and 3 is low). I move people between circles based on the progression of our relationship. ►   Notify circle: I have another circle with people that I don't want to miss a single post from. This circle is set to notify me whenever someone from it posts. This is a great way to focus on building a relationship with specific people.Happy Plussing :)2014-09-07 19:22:331921015

Dr. John Cassone11,568Dr. John's July Selectgood content and engagementThese are people I follow, engage with, and suggest for my new followers who want quality people in their stream. I've also included some of my new engagers. This is not a megacircle. People are only added based on good content or my experience engaging with them.Best way to sort and manage your stream:1. add new circle2. follow it in your stream separately 3. engage with those that interest you (good content/interaction)4. cherry pick those you like and make your own circles5. let go of the rest (or put them in a circle that's dialed down on your stream)If you add too many people too often then you will not build meaningful connections which is the point here.Circle Management Basics:1. Circles control who you follow:> I might feel like reading the news so I have a news channel circle. I don't build relationships with these pages but follow them and share content when interesting. This way I can completely control my stream based on my mood.2. Circles control who your share to: > Share to your interests: I like martial arts but most of my followers do not. By collecting a circle of others that like martial arts I can share specifically to those interested in this topic and not bore anyone.> I have also collected an "inner circle" of g-peeps that I have gotten to know and share more person pics and info with.3. Control your stream flow:> When you click on a specific circle in your stream you can adjust how much the posts from that circle appear in your "everything" stream. > Organize people based on flow: I have three main circles called 1, 2, and 3. I have the amount of flow dialed in priority (circle 1 is high, 2 is medium, and 3 is low). I move people between circles based on the progression of our relationship. > Notify circle: I have another circle with people that I don't want to miss a single post from. This circle is set to notify me whenever someone from it posts. This is a great way to focus on building a relationship with specific people.Happy Plussing :)2014-07-13 19:18:1119017315

Deep Stuff: Ten Dimensions

Or eleven...

Do you ever wonder whether there's something more important than the everyday concerns that are imposed upon us by the dominant culture? Like, what if the universe really is a hologram? What are the implications if this is true? Would anything about the dominant culture change? Should anything change? Does the possibility of a holographic universe suggest that a re-evaluation of our values and priorities as a species might be appropriate?___Deep Stuff: Ten Dimensions

21C Stewardship: Ecology, economy, equity

A commons and commoning disposition cannot happen too soon.

A paper titled “Ecologically sustainable but unjust? Negotiating equity and authority in common-pool marine resource management” co-authored by Sarah Klain, Rachelle Beveridge and myself was just published in Ecology & Society. The article asks: a) whether natural resource management can be ecologically sustainable but unjust at the same time, and b) if distribution of harvesting rights and socio-economic benefits and inclusion in management is unfair, how might access to resources and governance institutions be re-oriented. We explore these questions through a case study of indigenous peoples’ involvement in commercial sea cucumber and geoduck fisheries on the central coast of British Columbia, Canada using Elinor Ostrom’s social-ecological systems framework and common pool resource design principles.___21C Stewardship: Ecology, economy, equity

Zen of Small Tasks: Celebrate Saturnalia

#onthisday   in 211 CE in Rome, Emperor Caracalla had his brother Geta murdered during the celebrations of the Saturnalia at the home of their mother.

“Antoninus wished to murder his brother at the Saturnalia, but was unable to do so; for his evil purpose had already become too manifest to remain concealed, and so there now ensued many sharp encounters between the two, each of whom felt that the other was plotting against him, and many defensive measures were taken on both sides. Since many soldiers and athletes, therefore, were guarding Geta, both abroad and at home, day and night alike, Antoninus induced his mother to summon them both, unattended, to her apartment, with a view to reconciling them. Thus Geta was persuaded, and went in with him; 3 but when they were inside, some centurions, previously instructed by Antoninus, rushed in a body and struck down Geta, who at sight of them had run to his mother, hung about her neck and clung to her bosom and breasts, lamenting and crying: "Mother that didst bear me, mother that didst bear me, help! I am being murdered." (Cassius Dio)

The odd family crisis is very probably a common feature of high holidays and festivals since time immemorial. And neither does the Roman Empire nor its Imperial families make an exception. Admittedly, the sons of Emperor Septimus Severus hated each other with a vengeance since they could crawl. And the emperor did his best not to give undue preferences to one of his sons, but then, Caracalla was the older, by just a year, though, and he was made Caesar and then Augustus first, got the military command in Britain, while younger Geta had to do the boring administration job in Eboracum and probably always got the more expensive presents on Saturnalia anyway. The emperor had corresponding forebodings on his mind about how this would end after his death and planned a partition of the empire, the west for Caracalla and the east for Geta, but Septimus Severus got a cold fighting the Caledonians in the deep of winter and died in February 211 and Caracalla and Geta were proclaimed joint emperors.

Trying to hold the family wealth together, the young emperors’ mother Julia Domna spoke out against dividing up the empire between her sons and the two, back in Rome, continued to intrigue against each other and then the holiday season came and Caracalla finished first again. Geta did rather not expect his brother to plan mischief during family celebrations with their mother present, but far from it. As soon as family and friends laid down at the set table, Caracalla’s hirelings gatecrashed the party, Geta, then 22 years old, fled into the arms of his mother and was stabbed down nonetheless, Julia Domna was injured at the hand while trying to ward of the blows from her son. Immediately afterwards, Caracalla ordered a damnatio memoriae against his brother, his images were painted over, coins with his likeness melted down and what not. Caracalla’s relationship towards his mother was, quite understandably, damaged beyond repair and Saturnalia celebrations with the Severans would never be the same again.

A political purge followed and hundreds, maybe thousands of Geta’s former followers were executed by the new sole emperor. Those who survived finally managed to assassinate Caracalla while he campaigned in Parthia, allegedly while the emperor answered the call of nature. However, Caracalla probably had ruined another celebration, this time to provide for a casus belli with the Parthian empire. According to the contemporary historian Herodianus, the emperor had plagued the Parthian king Artabanus to give him the hand of his daughter and when the Middle Eastern monarch finally agreed and the guests assembled for the royal wedding in the palace at Arbela, Caracalla ordered his household troops to slaughter the assembled company including the bride. If the story is true or not, Caracalla’s death during the campaign forced his immediate successor Macrinus, who was at least co-responsible for his assassination, to abandon the war and pay huge reparations to Artabanus. But by then, the doors were wide open for the coming Rome’s Crisis of the Third Century anyway.

Depicted below is Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s imagination of the happy Imperial family during games at the Circus Maximus, with Geta standing between the two women at the balcony rail and Caracalla leaning brooding to a column in the background to the right of their seated parents Septimus Severus and Julia Domna (1907)

And more about Geta on:

Good Morning Dear Hyperboreans

Bow down: I am the emperor of dreams;
I crown me with the million-colored sun
Of secret worlds incredible, and take
Their trailing skies for vestment when I soar,
Throned on the mounting zenith, and illume
The spaceward-flown horizons infinite.
~ Clark Ashton Smith, Excerpt from The Hashish Eater

Now as the twilight's doubtful interval
Closes with night's accomplished certainty,
A wizard wind goes crying eerily,
And on the wold misshapen shadows crawl,
Miming the trees, whose voices climb and fall,
Imploring, in Sabbatic ecstacy,
The sky where vapor-mounted phantoms flee
From the scythed moon impendent over all.

Twin veils of covering cloud and silence, thrown
Across the movement and the sound of things,
Make blank the night, till in the broken west
The moon's ensanguined blade awhile is shown....
The night grows whole again....The shadows rest,
Gathered beneath a greater shadow's wings.
~ Clark Ashton Smith, The Eldritch Dark

The likelihood that Smith will ever attain widespread recognition for his poetry is, to be sure, not great. Most members of the general literary community have become so unaccustomed to the lushness and complexity of this kind of poetry that they are likely to pass it off unthinkingly as either esoteric or passé (as if literary merit were somehow equivalent to contemporaneousness); while devotees of Smith's fiction appear to be unfamiliar with the rhetoric of poetry and are therefore unused to fantasy in verse form. But to the judicious reader, the compressed brilliance, the imaginative range, and the verbal and metrical panache of Smith's odes, sonnets, and lyrics will be immediately evident. The Roman axiom pulchrum est paucorum hominum ("Beauty is for the few") never had a more relevant object than the poetry of Clark Ashton Smith.
~ S. T. JOSHI & DAVID E. SCHULTZ, 2002 Excerpt from the Introduction to The Last Oblivion: Best Fantastic Poems of Clark Ashton Smith

"Clark Ashton Smith was born on January 13th, 1893, in Long Valley, California and lived much of his life in nearby Auburn, with his parents. An autodidact after Grade 5, Smith began to write at the age of eleven. At seventeen, Smith sold stories to The Black Cat, The Overland Monthly, and other magazines. His first collection of verse, Star-Treader and Other Poems was published in 1912, and received rave reviews. He resumed writing short stories in the late 20s, his best output occurring between 1930 and 1936, often in Weird Tales. A literary friend of Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft, he contributed a number of elements to the Cthulhu Mythos, and created a world of Hyperborea before Howard used it for his Conan tales. He continued to publish verse in a number of magazines. His translations of Baudelaire's Les fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil) are also very highly regarded. Smith was also a painter and sculptor. He also worked a number of mundane jobs including journalist, a fruit picker and packer, a wood chopper, a typist, a cement-mixer, a gardener, a hard-rock miner, mucker and windlasser."

Thanks for the memories. There and back. And for the feeling of the symphony-beyond-words, which also illustrates that the expedition is an experience beyond words, although much of its enactment is through the medium of words (and pictures, sounds and physical props, all of which the experience goes beyond...). We Made It? What Happened? Knowledge Expeditions

"Welcome to your next quest, a Knowledge Expedition, bringing you along a route slightly less travelled..."

A story unfolding. Weaving fragments in real-time. Co-creating beautiful artifacts. You are part of an expedition that sets out to explore new territories and reach new heights. Welcome aboard:

A small group of interested travellers gather at the Sagarmatha Café, in the Conversation Community.

At the departure date, we climb on board the Feynman Airstream, which will transport us to our chosen destination.

When we arrive at Base Camp, we go through all the necessary gear and agree on what sights we'd like to see after which we walk, talk and climb, explore to our hearts delight and then head back to our camp, preparing for the next leg of the journey.

As we reach further and climb higher, we get to play, sense, respond and perform, we get to encounter challenges and deal with contingencies in order to develop and improve our action, reflection, listening, communication and collaboration skills - all this in an immersive, collaborative, digital environment - an unfolding transmedia storyline with you as the hero.

Every journey brings new perspectives, unique insights, ideas and gifts for you to bring back home to your village and to your market in the village square.

To the side of the Sagarmatha Café countertop, there's a brand new 21C Artifact, one of +Joachim Stroh's inventions, a

Holonic Browser
http://kelldentours.com/tour/holons

On one of the walls right next to the Feynman Tannu Tuva Coffee Machine, there's one of +Ron Scroggin's dispatches http://goo.gl/WY60zU from one of the Knowledge Expeditions:

Working together in a shared metaphorical space of our creation, a mountain world, we have reached the highest point yet in our climb toward Wherever the Story Leads -- and beyond.

Seven of us (six humans, one virtual dog) are exploring, expanding and tweaking the workings of the 21C Knowledge Expeditions, preparing for the next trek up the mountain with community members.

On previous expeditions with travelers from the Community, we climbed the mountain Sagarmatha, and returned to the Village (the Conversation Community) with what we learned about social presence, levels of collaboration in a human-digital environment, and patterns of sustainability.

We are using this shared imaginary world as a creative workbench and learning space with application to perhaps any field, organizational or personal, and developing affordances and metrics for its process.

We are working as if with highly advanced, nearly telepathic network technology, well beyond our current actual platform capability, piggybacked on Google+.

The result is we are effectively working in the future of social reality: enactive intersubjectiviry. Through our effort, will, and intent, what will be has become what is. This report is from the future.

Tonight's camp is at a steep angle of ascent, paralleling our R&D progress. Even as we sleep, we are hugging Gravity's wall, as we loosen her grip, edging closer to the black of Space. Whatever we find we will bring back.

At another table, there's a deep dialogue, bordering on metalogue, where +joe breskin remembers working on a song:

"I went to the Oregon Country Fair the first time with a pretty good guide and interpreter, a person in the middle of a lot of the action, and yet even digging in as deeply as I could, a lot of the machine remained hidden from me. And a great deal of time and effort was wasted because I could not design interfaces or connections - I could not find out how the pieces were supposed to be fitting together until they were all completed, painted and installed. So I came back with an unfinished song, a verse that I still have not figured out what to do with ...

The song is about how people sometimes get the information or direction they seek, and why they often do not. I suppose that it stems from something I half-remember from the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. The idea is that we all have to ask other people for advice, for help, for guidance. And we rarely have enough of the puzzle in our hands to know which pieces we are really missing or what we ought to be looking for. So we rarely stumble on the magic words to ask the right question on the first try.

But when we are the person who is being asked for help, we have the option of answering the question that was asked, or the question that was underlying the question that was asked - the question that was buried under the questioner's confusion and their limited vocabulary - the question that was trying to be asked.

Most of the time most people do the former, they answer the question that was asked, because it is almost always easier than really getting involved and because there is little or no risk of rebuff for second-guessing the questioner.

The song was a stillborn attempt to provide a procedure for getting/helping people to ask the question under the question.

It goes:
Question Number One is "What's your question?"

Question Number Two is "Who should know?"

But Question Number Three is "Will they tell you, what they think you REALLY need to know?"

Just as true today as it was 20 years ago ...
-- +joe breskin    http://goo.gl/Wueod3

Inbetween Sagarmatha Café conversations, stories remembered, insights shared, next legs of our journeys mapped out through words, maps, legends and tall tales, +John Kellden walks to the mic at the small scene, asks for a moment of silence, and invites anyone who so wishes, to join him in a song:

Let me bring you high on a climb,
to make you see much further, than you would know;
Dancing through all wind and snow,
all our efforts, turned to flow,
hold us steady as we go:

Join the chorus, if you can;
it'll make of us, a merry band...

Let us find our voice and our name,
prayer flags and stanzas clear through windy maze -
To still our thirst and heal our gaze,
our stumbling turned a newfound zest,
as we take small steps along our quest:

Life's long winding road is here -
we'll climb along in winded cheer!

Let us bring back all things refined,
ancient chimes and new songs for all villagers -
Greetings given 'round the bend,
a movement clear beyond pretend,
what once a stranger, now turned friend...

A traveller through these wasteful times -
with heartfelt prose  -   enacting rhymes...

Let us bring you tales from our climb,
to make our village prosper, more than we'd know;
Spring-time flowers amidst the snow,
rediscovered tunes, unfolding flow
in this brand new day, as one we go...

It's perfectly possible for you to sing along, once you know the tune:
Songs from the Wood:

At the heart of all Knowledge Expeditions, is your quest, your rediscovering your own voice, your own unfolding storyline, your own gift to bring back to the village...

Our Future Societies: Panopticon

From my particular vantage point, umwelt, shelf - the liminal place between heuristics and algorithms - is the one to observe.

I have to admit that, until a few days ago, I had no idea what an "Elf on the Shelf" was. But after hearing about it, I'm both horrified and thoughtful. The headline of the article below is clearly meant to attract attention, but the underlying analysis is, I think, quite sound. This is a "game" in which the child, every day, has to find where the elf which is spying on them is. They aren't allowed to touch the elf or play with it; the most they can do is talk to it, in the knowledge that whatever they say will be duly reported back to Headquarters that night.

I was about to say that this is not "play" in any normal sense, but that's not true.

Let me ask: What is the purpose of play? Specifically, what is the purpose of "pretend play," in which personalities are given to items, identities are adopted, stories are told? It's very similar to the purpose of fiction: it's how we learn to interact with the world, by imagining scenarios and thinking about all of the different ways that we could respond to them. (Fiction both does this, and gives us exposure to how other people might think about them: it's thus a combination of play -- imagining ourselves in the protagonist's shoes -- and a window into other people's worlds)

A game like "Elf on the Shelf" is a chance to place oneself in the situation of knowing that one is being watched, monitored, reported on, and analyzed by remote and powerful forces, and think about how to structure one's life in such a circumstance.

So to be perfectly honest, it's a perfect game for today's children, in that it asks them, when still small, to role-play through real challenges which they'll face as adults: how to survive in a panopticon. Being aimed at children, it takes the form of a happy, pleasing elf, as opposed to -- say -- a Stasi agent wearing headphones and listening to a bugging device. (Although I don't think I can really look at this toy without remembering Ulrich Mühe's brilliant performance in The Lives of Others)

Pinto's critique of this toy is that it normalizes living under surveillance for children, and encourages them to grow up thinking that this is normal. There are really three ways to think about this, though.

One is to imagine a world in which these children will grow up to have agency over the state in which they live. In such a case, for them to grow up seeing surveillance as the most ordinary of things would be terrifying -- at least from our perspective as people who have grown up in a world which was not quite so monitored. (Which is to say, those who grew up in the Western world prior to the mid-90's or so)

A second is to imagine a world in which our children have no meaningful agency over these matters, in which various organizations with ambiguously alarming names like "the committee for state security" (among others) are monitoring one continuously, and their operators therefore have infinite powers of blackmail or imprisonment over everyone. ("Show me six lines written by the most honest man in the world," Cardinal Richelieu famously said, "and I will find enough therein to hang him." He meant it, too.) In a world like this, children need to learn how to survive from an early age: dealing with a panopticon becomes as important a thing to learn as dealing with wolves or Klansmen was for other generations.

But there is a third possibility, one which I think is both the most likely and the hardest to think through: that, by the time our children grow up, the ways in which they think about surveillance will be as foreign to us as the ways we think about computers are foreign to our own parents. The rise of surveillance has not been a simple ascent of the Stasi: it's been a "democratized panopticon," in which many people have access to one another's information: people as unknown to one another as strangers in a city knowing as much about one another as fellow residents of a small village. We have already seen many profound shifts in our notions of privacy, and we are still quite far from reaching an equilibrium with which we are, as a society, happy. Consider, for example, the question: is it appropriate for a prospective employer to look at one's social media posts, and deny employment to someone based on -- say -- pictures of them at a party? Most people instinctively feel that there is something profoundly wrong here, but within the rather rough bounds of our established norms, it's hard to say what: these pictures are publicly visible, after all.

What's happening here, and in hundreds of other similarly complex cases, is that as information has become tremendously more available, our social norms around the acceptable use of such information, and the acceptable means by which such information can be gathered, are still evolving. This is something I deal with every day, trying to balance people's wish to disseminate information with people's wish to control it -- and often, with the same people having profoundly contradictory desires for themselves and for others. We don't have solid answers yet: what we have are evolving norms, as we (as a society) feel out the boundaries of the acceptable, and try to construct a working system in a technologically different world.

In a context like this, the Elf on the Shelf suddenly has a very important meaning: it's a way for children to start to grasp and grapple with these issues from childhood. We've created toys like this for our children because, consciously or not, we are aware that the problems which face our world are profound, and we've come to see them as so natural that of course they would manifest in the toys we make. This is beyond natural: it is important, because it creates a channel for children to start to explore these questions from an early age.

I don't know what kinds of games and behaviors children will develop around these toys. I suspect that there will be a wide range, and that as these children grow up, the experience of surveillance-play will shape their attitudes and feelings around the technical panopticon which we have accidentally created. And I suspect that it is these children -- the still-unnamed, post-Millennial generation -- who will ultimately come up with a working social order that defines much of our future.

So given that, I understand the existence and the popularity of the Elf on a Shelf.

But I still think the damned thing is creepy.___Our Future Societies: Panopticon

+Alex Gagnon :
+Marcy Luikart I was once addicted to Klezmer. I have never found music that gave me such powerfully good feelings.. I just want to dance, but more than that, it reaches down into my soul.. and pulls me forward.. I laugh and I even cry at times... I remember seeing this documentary once a long time ago.. might be the Wandering Muse? I forget the title.. they followed these Romani people all across Europe and elsewhere.. in any case, it focused on the music.. and the music was heavenly.. you saw people really living a hard life, and then by the train tracks they took out their instruments.. they were living misery in some cases.. but when they took out the fiddles the heavens shone down heavenly light.

I've been a composer, musician, song-writer for 20+ years and no one really knows how I was influenced by this type of music.. I made it my own, but I definitely used it as inspiration.. because I wanted my music to make people happy like that.

+John Kellden :
The quickest, simplest and best approach for optimizing your return on engagement, not only in the Conversation Community, but in Google+ and the rest of the Universe as well, is to adopt a Klezmer Disposition.  Jackson Five works as well.

+John HD Dewey :
Imagine future ear pieces designed to look retro, to look like turn of the century interventionist technology, sleek, prominent, sharp lines and smooth planes of black plastic and blue lights.

And it will be cool, as fashion makes its critical and nostalgic comments about this earlier generation. A nostalgic humor about its assumptions of technology, of its mode of inserting, about intersecting, about augmenting, about changing, about interventions and control. Just like we think Buck Rogers is quaint for its art deco sense of technology as mobility and aesthetic definition. Our children's children will wear their funny blue tooth earpieces out of nostalgia and out of quiet condescension about us. About those people born in the last century, as they were just discovering the future of cognitive integrative technology, in that first decade of the 21st century.

Take lots of pictures of your technology and you, your descendants will relish them.

Somewhere on a bluegreen planet called Gaia by some of its natives, there's an idea emerging, which will in the years and decades to come, enable the inhabitants to reweave their tapestries, between themselves, revitalizing the part of the thin surface tension ecosphere which they are gradually realizing they are here to steward. Some of the related tasks will be initiated on a Monday very much like the one which will happen soon enough after you've read this send. 21C Community: Reciprocal Altruism

As you sprint through whatever you feel you absolutely need to get done in your mad dash before the holidays, take a moment to reflect on why you are doing what you're doing.

If you feel you have enough time, and feel cognitively courageous, here's a fivefold dialectic, relating Confucianism with the Hero's Journey and then some.   (:

A Helping Hand

For quite a long time in my life I gathered quotes that I painstakingly wrote into a notebook. Some of them I gleaned from books I’d read, others I overheard, or saw somewhere and others still I rewrote from memory never quite knowing who to ascribe them to. That notebook is in a trunk in storage in the UK, along with some of my oldest books, one more ‘victim’ to a lifestyle that turned more and more nomadic as I grew up.

Each quote I committed to paper was, for me, a little like a cognitive catalyst. It means something personally deeper because its significance resonated. One quote out of what must be hundreds if not thousands has stood out in my mind and I have not yet found its etymology or indeed who first said it (and I read it in a Reader’s Digest “Quotable Quotes” section back in the early 70s). It goes: ”If only all the hands that reach could touch.”

For me, that, was a defining mental moment. I have remembered the quote (though this is the first time I have ever used it) because it manages to encapsulate in just nine words the sum total of the yearning, hope, suspicion and hopelessness of the human condition.

We all want to help others (and we feel great while doing it) and that feeling, in itself, soon begins to sow the seeds of doubt in our minds. Do we help others so we can feel great? Does the gratitude expressed or the implied difference in status make us feel good about ourselves? Do we do it so that we can expiate the guilt we feel for who knows what else?

From a Darwinian point of view altruism (and selfless help) are explained through the drive to continue the species (scientifically narrowed down to “kin selection”) – there is an equation that actually describes that: http://goo.gl/Rv3q4o and it apparently drove the person who formulated it to suicide.

I am a big believer in the perceived symmetry of power (which psychology explains as “reciprocal altruism” - http://goo.gl/TkeK) and (against all rational evidence) a big believer in the intuitive connection of one life force to another (which is why I posted this yesterday: http://goo.gl/NvPORW). Judging by the comments many of you feel the same way though again the scientific evidence we have for that is zero. The online world which allows us to get online from anywhere, in the privacy of our own home and could, potentially, be an even greater isolating and inward gazing experience, has only made more of us want to reach out and help: http://goo.gl/Fh7iZ4.

Psychologists think that it’s because we’re playing a scenario, or a role, in our heads: http://goo.gl/Ri2J0m. Altruism, depending on your point of view, may be the result of our attempt to live with our ego: http://goo.gl/SJxdhF or simply tied to our identity and our ‘vision’ of the world we want to live in.

In Confucianism Jen (http://goo.gl/16IeN) is a quality that truly makes us human which one psychologist, at least, has compared it as a willingness to do good: http://goo.gl/3UDfhV. And it is, in a way, a kind of gift that simply keeps on giving: http://goo.gl/E1rXcA.

Christmas is the time of the year when we usually (and habitually) have to look a little inward, take stock of the year that’s passed, then turn outwards and try and do something nice, give something back.

This giving back seems to be spreading, happening more and more across the year, as time and opportunity allow, Even Google is in on the act with GoogleServe (http://goo.gl/CPuoO9). While we all want to change the world and we all want it to be a better place that’s something that simply is not written in our job description.

I am not really sure whose job description it is. Certainly not the politicians who govern us (though I know they are also trying and fighting an imperfect system). The Church (in whatever form you look at it) is not doing that much either. So, it’s down to us again. To achieve a big end by acting in small ways.

If the task falls on all of us and each of us does something small towards it, that has a way of accumulating into something big as Peter Singer suggests: http://goo.gl/W7i14C.

It’s that day of the week. I hope you have coffee aplenty at hand accompanied by cookies, donuts, croissants and a little bit of cake. Have an awesome Sunday wherever you are.

The pilot-wave theory is a classical interpretation of quantum mechanics (i.e. no randomness and deterministic), but has been ignored for decades. Now, new research is reviving the old theory and pointing out that our ingrained notions of the Universe at the smallest scales might be wrong. A new interpretation of Quantum Mechanics may not give us better predictions or equations about the laws of physics, but could lead us down a new path that enables to figure out the remaining mysteries of the quantum world.___Good Morning All Quanta
