Can hacking ever produce something beautiful? If you dig yourself out of 4chan from time to time you might find gems like this incredibly detailed map of the internet that shows not visualizes when people are logging in but also changes in traffic patterns over time. It's a feat that required hacking over 420,000 computers to report the relevant data. The resultant map is both beautiful and fascinating to look at, but I'm not quite sure if the ends justify the means in this case ;)

I'm familiar with the concept of going around in circles, but this circular pedestrian bridge in Lujiazui, China takes it to quite literal proportions. Designed as a pedestrian overpass to avoid traffic at a busy round-about terminus, several axial arms also provide access to the Oriental Pearl Tower, a transit station, and office buildings in addition to the more pedestrian destination of a sidewalk. Standing 20 feet above the street and able to accomodate 15 people walking abrest, it's become quite the attraction since it's construction. Who want's to bet there's a XM Portal right in the center? ;)

Night plussers, try to get some sleep if you can after gazing at this image of the continental United States at night presented in unprecedented cloud-free clarity by NASA. The feat was made possible by using the Suomi NPP satellite's "day-night band" of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), which detects a range of light from green to near-infrared, which when coupled with filtering techniques brings out the soft glow of city lights, gas flares, auroras, wildfires, and reflected moonlight. I wonder how we in the East Coast manage to get any sleep at all when we're lit up like a Christmas Tree all the time ;)

No, this is not an illustration per se, it's actually an awesome application of Venom Face and Body Paint by artist Georgette from Devious Body Art. Look closely and you'll see what initially looks like a gaping maw is actually the model's neck and chin cleverly hidden under black paint. Who needs a trail when you can walk amongst the treetops themselves. Lying deep within the Bavarian Forest National Park in Germany is Baumwipfelpfad, the longest tree-top walk in the world. Spanning 1300 meters that brings you up an impressive 25 meters above the ground, the walkway's grand finale ends at a massive egg shaped dome 44 meters high with a 360 degree spiral staircase that gently leads you down, all the while offering breathtaking views of the natural beauty surrounding it. As if that weren't enough, several adventure stations are spaced throughout the pathway incuding a narrow wooden plank that challenges patrons to test their balance and rewarding you with a view of the earth 50 feet below. Personally I'm not one to commune with nature, but I'd love a chance to live like an elf for a day ;)

We might consider dogs man's best friend, but to an eccentric samurai or daimyo (feudal lord) in the Edo period they also objects of bling. This carved wooden helmet and coat of black-lacquered scale mail may look fearsome, but evidence suggests the armament was mainly decorative, and that the dog wore it for parades and other ceremonial occasions. My theory is this particular dog also happened to come across some sweet loot playing dungeons and dragons ;)

It's the multifaceted dish that poaches eggs from the realm of breakfast and combines it with hearty substance of lunch by placing a poached egg right on top of the burger patty, making each bite moist with the flavor of running egg yolk. Some of us may not like winter, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate the scale and scope of artist Sonja Hinrichsen's Snow Drawings, which look like a series of crop circles etched into the flat white expanse. Using snowshoes and the help of 5 volunteers, the team was able to make an art installation of epic proportions at Rabbit's Ear Pass in the Rocky Mountains. The free flowing design of the spirals is a result of both planning and taking into account the natural contour of the land. Snow behaves differently depending upon the depth, moisture, and texture. Hinrichsen is particulary enamored with her chosen medium due to it's ephemeral nature.

"Snow drawings last such a short time. It could be two to three hours, or two to three days,” she says. “They define the landscape and they are defined by it.”

Part chocolate, part beer, and part deadly weapon, the Double Chocolate Beer Bread this the after dinner treat that you won't have a problem declassifying. Not really a chocolate cake nor beer bread, it's actually the best of both worlds fused into a tumultuous whole. Using whole wheat flour, a generous amount of cocoa powder, and a stout bottle of Sam Adams Chocolate Bock, the final product retains the richness of the chocolate while still being moist yet solid. Of course the decorative tin mold is optional, but who wouldn't jump for a chance to have something baked into the shape of a ninja shuriken ;)
