NASA2,833,925Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008311

Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych410,751It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00161

Jacob Dix37,043For some time now I have been doing a project, an experiment, an exploration, a study in light. My object has been the sky, through the limited vantage point of my kitchen window and my backyard. The result, so far, is this album called *Sky*: http://goo.gl/phGuR Forget about that for right now. Show everyone your own sky! The best, the worst. I've seen people mention avoiding it because it means they have no "object" to shoot. Don't listen to those people. It is the most challenging palette of light there is. Let's see 'em! You have a full day and a half! Please spread the word too.Sky!2012-09-02 00:00:0023

fun art tool of the day.

this site shows you sequences of poses for figure drawing practice, with a variety of settings for nude or not-nude, for quick practice, or even full class-length blocks of time. as a classical artist i want to bah-humbug a little about using photo reference, but nah. this is great to get your hands and eyes moving.

stylesheet cycling button.

(not sure if i am soothed or maddened by presenting these two gifs this way.)

yesterday +Abigail Markov said a thing about a button to switch between light/dark themes on a webpage. so yesterday i wrote a little script that does it.

the code is a little bit of jquery that cycles through specially marked CSS files in an HTML header, switching them on and off one a time. here i'm only showing two themes but i've tested up to four... i have no idea what the practical upper limit would be. it's a little janky because the entire page redraws the first time you enable a theme. after that, completely smooth. i'm looking into ways to fix that.

for the example this is a little markdown theme i've been working on. i have a bit of work to do on the theme before it really supports this feature, more on that later.<... more »

some words about the PREFERENCES collection.

let's make this a thing. the poll format is lots of fun and i have many questions, mostly about small important aspects of design.

i will gather everything up in this collection for reference, so we'll be able to take a look at what we've learned together.

process i'll be using:
- ask a simple question
- present two options
- use clear visuals
- embrace odd comparisons

glorious tools for generative art from one of my favorite twitter users @inconvergent

CIH chernobyl.

was just reminded of this, a virus from the late 1990s that at its worst had the capacity to write directly to BIOS and do serious damage. i lost the heart of a rig to this back in the day.

this stands out for me because it was software meant to destroy hardware. this wasn't something like a trojan stealing your credit card number, this thing was out for blood.

my new favorite toy this week: Pico-8.

billing itself as a "fantasy console" it has everything you need to develop little games or toys, all inside a teensy retro environment. there's code editing, graphics, maps, sound, even a tracker for music. it's deliberately crafted to be simple and limiting, as the author @lexaloffle says, "carefully chosen to be fun to work with, encourage small but expressive designs."

but my favorite part is the way you share your creations. when you've made a "cartridge" you can export it as a PNG image with your cover art. loading the PNG in the console will load the game or whatever you're playing with. (it sounds boring to describe but it's so fun in practice.) last night i downloaded a bunch of community made titles and there's so much quirky retro fun to be had.

encounter flow.

this is what happens when dawg meets an NPC. this is one small piece, just the beginning of an encounter. i had much of this programmed in the old twine version of the game, that was mostly off-the-cuff in a janky language. here it's formalized and polished a little.

next i'm working on the NPC decisionmaking flows. it's not AI by any stretch of the imagination, but it will need to be... autonomous logic.

there's a huge document coming together right now, for the entire dawg roleplaying system. i didn't realize how complex it would be all laid out.... take the most complex boardgame you've ever played and multiply that by 10. can't tell yet, but judging by the outline it's going to be about as beefy as any major pen and paper RPG.

my ill-fated enterprises.

usually i don't go in for resolutions of the new year, but this january i find myself reviewing some of the things i've worked on. on social media i was most active in 2012... that's four years ago now. three years since my high water mark. since then, a long slow decline.

most of these projects didn't even get off the ground. some were just categories to funnel certain work into. some were just placeholders, empty space for contemplation. but i count all of them as incomplete at best, abject failures at worst.

now i'm getting emails from my domain registrar. hey, you should renew friday art's dot org. that lonely passion project dispersion too. what was the art nucleus again? something formed? the infinite gallery? i've been letting most of the domains go. it all seems pretty irrelevant now. artifacts froma... more »

but you know... that's not gonna stop me from starting some new crazy shit. i'm unable to let go of YOU ARE DAWG. the glitch aesthetic has gone mainstream but i see my style remains my own. and i'm thinking hard about where to invest my energies now. i threw two years of my life away, dedicated to the towering metropolises of my younger self's daydreams.

i don't want to talk about my new ideas yet. i don't like that whole talking about unfinished things right now. i'm not gonna hype you up with vapor. i have a hard enough time delivering simple things. i need help to get anything bigger than a zine over the finish line.

i guess i'm taking a long look around and deciding what to keep and what to toss. not sure what the answers are yet. but the purge is coming. i wonder what that will be like. to abandon old dreams, to cut the line and try casting another.___

"nothing has changed. everything has changed."

there are a lot of david bowie memorials going around today. it's always a big deal when we lose an artist who touched so many, especially one as towering and monumental. when i heard this morning that he was no longer with us, it was like the air had been sucked out of the room.

his last and latest, Black Star is fantastic... an instant favorite. what an amazing stunt: to drop these final songs and videos and depart with a bang. i'm so happy i got to see him live, but equally sad that none of us will ever have that chance again.

for me today, this was the first song i wanted to hear: sunday, the opening track from heathen. it was the first song i listened to on my first time going out on a solo drive. i know he provided the soundtrack to many rites of passage. today is a day to recall those memories, it... more »

started reading deep into the docs for Unreal Engine last night.

i'm amazed how far it's come in the years since i used it (around 2003ish). it's now doing nearly everything i demand from Cinema4D, but the idea of being able to compile a map and just walk around these compositions is a fun idea. i don't think i want to make games with UE4, just some showcases like this.

the cards against humanity folks are voting through the end of 2015 to decide if they should convert an old picasso composition from 1 piece into 150,000 1.5mm pieces. the alternative is to donate it to the art institute of chicago.

since i actually get to vote on this, i got to think about it for a while. and i voted to cut it up. why? i feel like it raises interesting questions. is it iconoclastic? on the face of the matter, it is. but i also think it becomes an artistic venture unto itself to hack this thing up and send it to more than a hundred thousand people. how many people will ever own a picasso? 150,000 more. would picasso mind? i don't know, but i think if it was one of my pieces, this would tickle me immensely.

chrome support / bandwidth question

sorry to interrupt your regularly scheduled plussing. i'm having an odd tech problem and not really sure where to ask about it, so here i am.

some backstory: last month my little mobile wifi with 5gb/month of bandwidth suddenly surged right to the limit with just a couple days of use. i got some apps to monitor bandwidth usage, and found that when chrome was running, the bandwidth would just sit there ticking up and up and up even when i wasn't doing anything. i blamed extensions so i disabled them all. but something is still happening.

since i don't have access to the greatest internet these days (dodgy DSL at home, public wifi at libraries and coffee shops, and aforementioned hotspot), i'm very conscious of net traffic. i don't want to use bandwidth frivolously, but it's been impossible to look into this... more »

since i don't have access to the greatest internet these days (dodgy DSL at home, public wifi at libraries and coffee shops, and aforementioned hotspot), i'm very conscious of net traffic. i don't want to use bandwidth frivolously, but it's been impossible to look into this black box and figure out what is causing it. i tried switching to other browsers, but chrome is the browser to develop in. again, i disabled all extensions. and today i'm sitting at the library, my monitor says i've used almost 1.5gb (1gb up, 500mb down), and all i've done is toodle around on wikipedia and read some plus posts.

to illustrate what this looks like, i ran activity monitor (an OSX utility) for a while and screencapped the results. red is outbound traffic, you can see the spike. yet there's very little coming in. the 80mb referenced as received looks right to me, but what the hell would cause 350mb going out?

this became so upsetting to me that i set up an old copy of windows 3.1 on a virtual machine, so i could shut everything down and retreat to the safety of a pre-internet age. but obviously that doesn't really work.

can you think of anything i may have overlooked? and how can i lock this down? ___
