NASA2,462,532Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008329

Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych343,473It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00163

Jacob Dix37,043For some time now I have been doing a project, an experiment, an exploration, a study in light. My object has been the sky, through the limited vantage point of my kitchen window and my backyard. The result, so far, is this album called *Sky*: http://goo.gl/phGuR Forget about that for right now. Show everyone your own sky! The best, the worst. I've seen people mention avoiding it because it means they have no "object" to shoot. Don't listen to those people. It is the most challenging palette of light there is. Let's see 'em! You have a full day and a half! Please spread the word too.Sky!2012-09-02 00:00:0023

TBD whiffle tree

a thought experiment from the last day... looking at a piece of property in routt county colorado, in the yampa river valley basin and just at the edge of a national forest.

at first i was just bumming around zillow looking for <$10k parcels. at that price point some interesting things come up, either very remote or very small or both. this piece is a little less than an acre, but i appreciate the way it sits in the landscape. but i didn't stop there. i found the subdivision plan and started digging into zoning regulations, looking at what was possible.

my initial thought was just that i want a bit of property where i can do what i've been doing for the last couple weeks, only have it be mine where i don't have to move on after a few days. zoning regs strictly forbid camping, but i would be constructing some permanent dwelling anyway... more »

Falling on the ground and flailing your legs doesn’t look much like walking, but it’s a good way to learn to oscillate, and oscillation is the most effective motion for walking. If you lock your objectives strictly on walking, you won’t hit that oscillation stepping stone. Stanley calls this the “objective paradox” — as soon as you create an objective, you ruin your ability to reach it.

august... lights... something +Gregory Mennenga said to me from somewhere...

those old stories. those same old stories. again and again. they got it. the ancients, they understood. the same things we go through even now. those old stories. listen to them, remember. forget your modernity, leave your ego and hubris at the door. step through those ancient portals and listen to the voices of the yesterday-ones. we're all just children. remember yesterday, remember tomorrow.

digs of the moment

all of my life i've taken these snapshots, contemplating moments of where i am. listening to the future. a crack in the windshield. leaving a fragment for tomorrow.

never do share these, not usually. they're just left in the camera roll. they'll be more important at some other time. they're not for you, not now, says someone. for you later.

when i came back from europe in 2007 i started thinking about circumnavigation. it was that word i couldn't get out of my head. i wanted to go all the way around the world without ever leaving the surface. then just a few days ago i found out that another beardy ginger dude was off doing precisely that.

i love the guy who sits upstairs in the starbucks at 87th and broadway. i'm not gonna call him homeless, i don't know his life. but every time i come in he's in the same spot. just at the top of the stairs against the wall. he has a tablet always playing videos. usually he's got earbuds in and he's sprawled out snoozing quietly. sometimes the starbucks people come and make him wake up. they do their rounds and then he goes back to sleep or he goes back to watching. i've never not seen him here. in this city always devouring itself, he is one of the rare fixed points i've found.

i don't like when the other denizens eyeball him like he's weird, as if they are somehow separate. whatever his story is, i'd be interested to hear it. but i'm not going to talk to him. he's got his space and i've got mine. i respect that space.... more »

from the street

day two back in NYC. nothing seems real. or all too real. i see the motion of the city, the nearly imperceptible advancement of the season... a stasis of the culture.

the city is the city. my presence is unnecessary. i am relearning the gestures of this life. swiping a metrocard at the turnstiles. the engaging-not-engaging of other people. sucking on rapidly cooling coffee. i begin to wonder where the dream world ends and the real world begins, or what those distinctions even mean. in my mind i'm still ripping down interstate 80 in nevada. my soul is still there, it hasn't caught up with my body. i don't know if i even want it to catch up. i smell something on the wind.

this is a twine game i'm working on. started thinking about games i've enjoyed and how to articulate those experiences simply. of course it sprawled quickly and i found myself duplicating an entire D6-based RPG combat system. that's where these projects usually die.

thinking that today i need to just do something simply and write the words rather than getting hung up on dice rolls and stat checks. those actions don't make anything memorable, it's more about what happens inbetween.

TBD whiffle tree

a thought experiment from the last day... looking at a piece of property in routt county colorado, in the yampa river valley basin and just at the edge of a national forest.

at first i was just bumming around zillow looking for <$10k parcels. at that price point some interesting things come up, either very remote or very small or both. this piece is a little less than an acre, but i appreciate the way it sits in the landscape. but i didn't stop there. i found the subdivision plan and started digging into zoning regulations, looking at what was possible.

my initial thought was just that i want a bit of property where i can do what i've been doing for the last couple weeks, only have it be mine where i don't have to move on after a few days. zoning regs strictly forbid camping, but i would be constructing some permanent dwelling anyway... more »
