It pains me very much to say so, but the United States today is not a benign community. We have, over the last decade, undermined nearly all of the reasons that I, perhaps as a fool, thought distinguished us as virtuous, in our own particular way, despite our many flaws. True, but not just the last decade, guy.

As a Japanese citizen I would like Japan's supercomputer to be No. 1, but since Tianhe ("Milky Way") happens to be the Chinese rendering of my name (Tenga: 天河) I am glad to see this one do so well. And all that processing power is bound to benefit all of us in some ways, right?

When my workload is normal or light, I tend to walk at least 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. I lose weight regardless of what I eat. In times like these when I don't have time to walk more than 3,000 steps a day, I gain it all back. There must be a pithy saying in there somewhere.

Visiting us on Father's Day, my new son-in-law, who now works at Sony, says he wants to buy a two-family home and live with us. And why not? We are great providers of good bread, cheese, wine, coffee, and other good eats and drinks, not to mention stories of past adventures. Build that house, young man!

Now that Twitter no longer supports XML, Atom or RSS, but only JSON, I can no longer follow individual feeds from an RSS reader (as of today, apparently). Any alternatives? For example, this kind of link returns error:

Desktop PC users like me, who need a powerful machine for work, can order a machine any time with the latest parts, customizing it to our needs. Or we can wait three years for Apple to update the Mac Pro and make all the decisions for us, regardless of our needs.

The origin of meme. Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene:  "We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. 'Mimeme' comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like 'gene'. I hope my classicist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme." A good word that has quickly degraded, coming to be synonymous with one of the worst aspects of SNS.

The trigger
What started as a peaceful protest against the building of a shopping mall (in the form of an Ottoman-era military barrack demolished almost a century ago) in Gezi Park the last piece of green area in the center of Istanbul turned into a city-wide protest against the Islamist AKP government which has been in power for a decade now.
